Lots of exciting stuff going on down on the farm today:
AAA Fresno Grizzlies dropped a narrow 8-7 decision to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox:
Brock Bond- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .324.
Buster Posey- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(3). BA= .343.
Brett Pill- 3 for 5, 3 2B. BA= .299.
Kevin Pucetas- 4.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.
Good to see the true prospects leading the way here. Can't argue with the success the Giants are having so far this season, but it would sure be nice to find a way to get Posey into the the lineup too. Pill has been a doubles machine throughout his pro career. Lines like this are not going to get Pucetas to the majors.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Altoona Curve 2-1:
Tyler LaTorre- 3 for 5. BA= .455.
Nick Noonan- 3 for 5. BA= .247.
Clayton Tanner- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 11/5. ERA= 2.03
Dan Turpen- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, W(3-1). ERA= 3.77.
Noonan is hitting .303 in his last 10 games, .400 in his last 7. Tanner continues to post steady performances. Not exactly a dominating performance by Turpen.
High A San Jose Giants survived another bullpen meltdown to defeat the Stockton Port 7-5:
James Simmons- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(3). BA= .250.
Drew Biery- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .297.
Justin Fitzgerald- 6 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 9/5. ERA= 0.78.
Scott Nestor- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA=5.65.
Biery had been in a bit of a slump, but is now hitting .333 over his last 4 games. Love what Fitzgerald is doing with his chance to start. I'm strongly in favor of giving college closers a chance to start in the minors. Most closers, even at the college level, have one dominant pitch. Starting in the minors gives them the opportunity to add to their repertoire. Then, the dominant pitch makes them a stronger starter than maybe a guy with 3 or 4 pitches, but no "out pitch", or it makes them a better pro reliever if that's where the need is in the majors. Nestor came into the game sporting a 2.63 ERA. It will take him awhile to work it back down now.
Low A Augusta Greenjackets dropped a 7-6 decision in 11 innings to the Greenville Drive:
Evan Crawford- 2 for 6, 2B, SB(5). BA= .235.
Sharlon Schoop- 3 for 5. BA= .333.
Kyle Vazquez- 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.54.
Chris Gloor- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.23.
Jose Valdez- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, L(2-1). ERA= 2.93.
Evan Crawford is swinging a hot bat. The Greenjackets committed 4 errors in the game. Dominguez and Joseph went a combined 0 for 11. Chris Gloor has been a very effective jack-of-all-trades for the Greenjackets.
Not sure where I read it today, but the Giants have the best organizational record in baseball. While they are getting help from a few AAAA and organizational players like Joe Borchard, for the most part, they are doing it with true prospects.

Would you do that with Stoffel too? Start him, that is?
ReplyDeleteI would definitely move Stoffel to starter. Even if it takes a year or two longer to reach the majors, even if he is ultimately destined to be a reliever, I think you make a better MLB pitcher out of him by starting him in the minors.
ReplyDeleteNow, I know not everyone can start. At least I'd bring them in somewhere around the 6'th inning and ask them to go 2-3 innings at a time rather than just pitching the 9'th inning which doesn't really challenge them most of the time.
