AAA  Las Vegas Aviators doubled the score on the Sacramento River Cats 8-4:

Abiatal Avelino 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .277.
Mike Gerber CF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .344.
Anthony Garcia DH- 1 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .293.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.59.
Steven Okert LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.06.
Fernando Abad LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.29.

Not a good look for Andrew Suarez.  Steven Okert has whittled his ERA down from a peak of 6.35 on 5/9/2019.

AA  Binghampton Rumble Ponies pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-4:

Jacob Heyward LF/CF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .277.
Jonah Arenado SS/LF- 3 for 4.  BA= .298.
Conner Menez LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 2.52.

Let me get this straight:  Jonah Arenado started the game at SS?  Okay! It actually looks like this was Jonah's 4'th start at SS this season after none before in his pro career.  I had missed that!  Conner Menez continues to post impressive strikeout rates.

*********************************************************************************

A+ Lake Elsinore Storm rolled over the San Jose Giants 7-1(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HR(7).  BA= .297.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/0.  ERA= 4.09.

Heliot Ramos!  Lots of groundball outs for Sean Hjelle but 6 of the 10 hits he allowed were line drives so pretty hard to attribute those to BABIP luck.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants quieted the Lake Elsinore Storm 3-2(7 innings, Game 2 of DH):

Randy Norris RF- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .267.
Peter Maris DH- 2 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .364.
Bryce Johnson CF- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .246.
Trent Toplikar RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.82.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Frank Rubio RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0, Save(6).  ERA= 0.33.

Seems like Peter Maris can hit, but he's played at AA level in past.  He's essentially rehabbing in San Jose while awaiting clearance to play in field S/P TJ surgery.  Cal League uses DH in all games while EL uses it only in AL affiliate ballparks.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets edged out the Columbia Fireflies 3-2:

Frankie Tostado 1B- 3 for 4, 2 HR(9).  BA= .272.
Adam Oller RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Ben Madison RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.77.
Jesus Ozoria RHP- 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.65.

Frankie Tostado was a one man offense for the GJ's.  Adam Oller was signed as a minor league FA today and immediately used as an Opener in today's game.  As my mother used to say, "you can't tell the players without a program."

Game Wrap 5/30/2019: Giants 3 Marlins 1

Tyler Beede pitched the first Quality Start of his major league career to hold the Marlins at bay long enough for the Giants to score 3 late runs for a come-from-behind win.  Key Lines:

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BA= .215.  Didn't Crawford have a big June last year?  Maybe he is finally getting some traction at the plate?  Hitting .240 over his last 7 games and 5 for 11 in his last 3.

Tyler Beede RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 7.82.  Wow!  The ERA tells you. how rough it's been for Beede before today.  Beede had all is stuff working today relying on a mid-90's FB to set up a nasty changeup with 2-seam movement for one strikeout pitch and a tight hard curveball for another.  If the Giants can succesfully establish Beede in the starting rotation this year, it will go a long way toward building the next good Giants team, after he looked like another first round bust last year.

*********************************************************************************

Drew Pomeranz tries to turn his season around tomorrow evening as the Giants kick off a weekend series against the team with the worst record in baseball, the Orioles in Baltimore.  Andrew Cashner goes for the O's.

Down on the Farm: 5/29/2019

AAA  Las Vegas Aviators strafed the Sacramento River Cats 7-1:

Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .320.
Henry Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .266.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 2.93.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.40.

Tyler Beede was supposed to start this game for the River Cats but instead is on his way to Florida to start tomorrow's Giants game against the Marlins.  He is coming off a dominant start so maybe this his finally his breakout MLB game?

*********************************************************************************

AA  Binghampton Rumble Ponies outscored the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-5:

Jacob Heyward RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .264.
Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .288.
Zach Houchins 1B- 3 for 4.  BA= .171.
Johneshwy Fargas CF- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .235.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 2.31.

Caleb Baragar started out pitching well for San Jose Giants, then made a spot start for the AAA Sacramento River Cats that didn't go so well but was in Albuquerque.  He then went to Richmond where he has has 4 solid starts in a row.  He is 23 yo and in his 4'th pro season.

*********************************************************************************

A+ San Jose Giants blanked the Lancaster Jethawks 1-0:

Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
David Villar DH- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .253.
Jett Manning SS- 2 for 3.  BA= .222.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.33.
Solomon Bates RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Olbis Parra RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 3.09.

Aaron Phillips got off to a rough start in the Cal League but has settled down and allowed just 3 ER in 22 IP over his last 4 starts.  Ryder Jones is apparently starting a rehab assignment.

A Augusta Greenjacket were idle.

Game Wrap 5/29/2019: Marlins 4 Giants 2

There were some fairly obvious shenanigans around the timing of Madison Bumgarner's departure from a game tied at 1 after throwing just 81 pitches indicating the Giants are not exactly in it to win it right now.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 4, HR(8), SB(2).  BA= .230.   Belt does have an .800 OPS, but is hitting just .200 over his last 7 games.  He drove in both runs tonight with the dinger and a groundout in the ninth.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.01.  OK, here we go.  The beat writers think they know why Bum was pulled after allowing a leadoff single in the 7'th inning of a 1-1 game:  The Giants are protecting him for a trade that is likely to go down in the next two weeks and likely to the Phillies(more on that later).  Bochy said he could tell that Bum was "gassed" from the 3'rd inning on. For his part, Bum said he didn't feel good warming up and could tell it was going to be a tough night.  He denied feeling ill and refused to blame his not feeling well on the warm weather.  Now, if you believe all that BS, then I have some land......

*********************************************************************************

The Giants are now 8 games back in the Wild Card race, but who's counting?  They all but officially ran up the white flag today.

*********************************************************************************

Tyler Beede missed his start tonight in Sacramento so he could start tomorrow in a day game against the Marlins where he will try to salvage a game out of the series against Sandy Alcantara.

*********************************************************************************

Someone asked in the Comments a couple of days ago if I have my heart set on any prospects out there I hope the Giants get in what is now guaranteed to be a midseason selloff.  First of all, the Giants are not going to be getting any other team's #1 prospect for some rental players.  I will throw out OF Clint Frazier of the Yankees, RHP Deivi Garcia of the Yankees, OF Adam Haseley of the Phillies as players I think are realistic targets on teams that are potential trading partners.  Putting together realistic trades is extremely difficult and takes a lot more time than I have these days.  I will refer you to Bleacher Report who put together several trade scenarios for different teams that might want Madison Bumgarner for their stretch run and postseason.  Those potential trades not only seem reasonable, but I would be fairly happy if the Giants got one of those hauls in real life.

Since the Beats seem to think the Phillies are the most likely trade partner, lets break that down a bit further.  Bleacher Report's Phillies' package includes RHP Adonis Medina, LHP Jojo Romero and SS Cornelius Randolph.  Some readers here may be turned off by a lack of performance this season from all three of these prospects, but all things considered, it's not a bad package.  Both Medina and Romero have premium stuff and likely just need a bit more polishing to break out.  You may recall Randolph from our draft coverage in 2015.  He's never quite gotten traction on his career, but still has the tools.  At age 21, he still has time to put it all together.  The one guy in the Phillies system I am a bit jealous of is Adam Haseley, an Andrew Benintendi type OF, who hasn't quite lived up to his #8 overall selection in the 2017 draft, but he's still got some time too.  I don't know if the Phils would part with 2 position prospects in the trade but I would try to swap out Medina for Haseley in the package.

Down on the Farm: 5/28/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Albuquerque Isotopes 7-2:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .280.
Anthony Garcia LF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .299.
Henry Ramos RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .261.
Levi Michael 2B- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .270.
Ty Blach LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 10/0.  ERA= 5.96.
Dillon McNamara RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.04.
Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.40.

I'll say this about the River Cats this year:  They've produced interesting, even exciting, boxscores most of the season in stark contrast to the parent club.  Solid start for Ty Blach with dominant groundball ratio.  Has he found his footing or is it one game BABIP luck?

*********************************************************************************

AA  Binghampton Rumble Ponies outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1(10 innings):

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .287.
Johneshwy Fargas CF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .227.
Brandon Lawson RHP- 5 IP,  4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.82.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

*********************************************************************************

A+ Lancaster Jethawks pounded the San Jose Giants 9-4:

Bryce Johnson RF- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(11).  BA= .250.
Heliot Ramos CF- 3 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .296.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .171.
Garrett Cave RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.75.

Tremendous night for the linchpin of the Giants future, Heliot Ramos.  This was just Garrett Cave's third appearance in May, but it was a good one.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 7-6:

Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 5.  BA= .262.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .227.
Aaron Bond RF- 1 for 3, HR(7), 2 BB.  BA= .174.
Andres Angulo C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .207.
Jose Layer CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .192.
Matt Seelinger RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.25.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.01.

Third HR in three games for Aaron Bond.  Jacob Gonzalez is hitting .263 over his last 10 games.

Game Wrap 5/28/2019: Marlins 11 Giants 3

Oh my!  Coming off a crushing series sweep to the D'Backs in Oracle Park, the Giants may have been breathing a sigh of relief to be facing the only team in MLB with a worse record.  As we've seen so often for the past 2.5 years, faceplant!  Jeff Samardzija threw batting practice for a previously weak hitting Marlins lineup and after Joe Panik's leadoff HR in the top of the first inning, the Giants offense mustered just one hit over the next 7 innings against Trevor Richards.  So, we've come to this:  The Giants are a worse team than the Marlins, a team that is actively trying to be bad!  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .251.  Panik has been one of the few bright spots in May and even he is coming out of a slump.  4 for 9 over his last 2 games, though.  Joe is going to be a free agent at the end of the season, so has to be on the trading block coming up to the trade deadline.  Problem is, despite being maybe the Giants current best position player, you have to squint really hard to see much trade value in Joe Panik.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.83.  Can't blame this one on first inning blues which he got through without allowing a run.  He started the 5'th inning with a walk and a single.  Nick Vincent got 2 outs but then single, blast and the route was on.  The Giants used 4 pitchers in the game, Shark, Vincent, Derek Holland and Sam Coonrod.  They all allowed at least 1 ER to the worst hitting team by OPS in MLB.

*********************************************************************************

There is no point in tracking the Giants deficit in the standings.  I am declaring them officially out of playoff contention.  If they start showing signs of life and gain a couple of games or 4 in the Wild Card standings we can always pick it up again.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to stop the embarrassment tomorrow evening against someone named Pablo Lopez.

*********************************************************************************

I don't pretend to know anything at all about what managers do to make their team better.  They can win a few extra games each season with good decisionmaking, mostly around when to make pitching changes and get the right matchups.  Beyond that it's a black box.  "Clubhouse chemistry" is an elusive term that defies definition.  I guess it's like pornography, you know it when you see it?  By that measure, the Giants definitely had it for a 5 season run from 2010 through 2014.  I think you can add in 2009 and the first half of 2016.  Even in the odd years, you still had the feeling this was just a 1 year hangover and they would come back strong the next season.

I don't know what happened at the All-Star break in 2016, but it was like someone just turned out a light.  There was a late rally that was killed by Bobby Evans' failure to land a Closer at the trade deadline then.....nothing.  This team has been absolutely moribund ever since.  I can't put a finger on it but there is no life, no enthusiasm.  Bochy looks and acts like he stopped caring 2 years ago.  The "core" players occasionally do some good things but mostly act like they are happy to finish out their careers with 3 rings and a big paycheck.  In retrospect, maybe Boch should have listened to his friend, the Flan Man and ridden off into the sunset with him after 2014?

I've never thought managers should be canned because their team is bad.  That would be the GM's fault.  But when the team comes to the park game after game not ready to play as evidenced by a horrific first inning run differential, well, maybe it's time for new leadership.  Some of the current malaise may be due to the failed offseason, constant churning of the roster and the sense of a directionless front office, but this is the vibe we've gotten for 2.5 years now starting long before the front office regime change.

The Giants are in a tough spot with a Hall of Fame Manager who is in the announced final season of his career.  They cannot fire Bruce Bochy midseason.  That would be a horrible look!  But, and I didn't think I would ever say this, it's way past time for him to go.  It's time for the team to quietly offer him a sweet deal to take early retirement and let it be his idea.  Maybe he needs to attend to his gimpy knee?  Maybe his cardiologist tells him he needs to rest the ol' ticker?  Have a day for him later in the season.  It's time for Boch to hang it up and let someone else try to inject an ounce of competitiveness into this team.

Scouting the 2019 Draft: Random Draft Thoughts

It is impossible to narrow down the potential draft choices past Round 2, so I am not going to try.  Instead, I'll wrap things up with some random draft thoughts.  I will try to post both a final DrB's 2019 Draft Board and a 10-15 pick mock draft next weekend.  The Draft itself starts on Monday, 6/3.

While Adley Rutschman C, College(Oregon St) is the consensus #1 draft prospect, he is not so far ahead of the pack to make him his own tier.  I am seeing a top tier of 11-15 players who you could make a case for at least top 5 consideration if not #1 overall.  Within that tier are 4 college hitters, Rutschman, Andrew Vaughn 1B(Cal), JJ Bleday OF(Vanderbilt) and Bryson Stott SS(UNLV).  Those 4 are complemented by 3 HS hitters, SS Bobby Witt Jr, SS CJ Abrams and OF Riley Greene.  The conventional wisdom is this is a terrible year for pitchers, but I am warming up to the pitching crop and find at least 4 who are worthy of top 10 consideration, LHP Nick Lodolo(college/TCU), RHP Alek Manoah(college/West Virginia), RHP Jackson Rutledge(JC) and RHP Matthew Allan(HS).  Rutledge in particular is someone I could see going top due to his incredible size and projectability.

That is 11 names so two are guaranteed to be on the board when the Giants select at #10.  In addition to those 11, C Shea Langeliers(College/Baylor) seems to be moving back up draft boards and into top 10 consideration as an elite defensive catcher whose bat seems good enough.  As Kevin Cunningham noted in a recent MCC post, Farhan Zaidi has a long history of stockpiling catchers to the point of it being a fetish for him.  I've also seen Langeliers mocked as high as #2, so there's not guarantee Zaidi gets to scratch that itch.  LHP Zack Thompson(college/Kentucky) seems to be catching some late helium and some analysts have RHP Quinn Priester as the top HS pitcher on their boards ahead of Allan. So there's 3 more players on the fringes of the top tier, possibly included.

Take home message?  Unless Farhan tries to get cute with an underslot deal, which he absolutely should not do, the Giants are going to get a highly regarded prospect with their 10'th overall pick in round 1.

*********************************************************************************

Everybody knows about Bobby Witt Jr's dad being a MLB pitcher.  There are at least 2 more 2019 draft prospects related to former MLB'ers, including another "junior".  Glenallen Hill, Jr is an athletic, switch-hitting HS OF ranked #169 by MLB Pipeline.  Glenallen Sr played for the Giants from 1995-97, grew up in the Bay Area and still has a strong connection to the team.

Grae Kessinger SS(college/Mississippi) is the grandson of Don Kessinger who was an all-star SS for the Cubs back when I was a kid listening to games on the radio.  Grae is ranked #128 by MLB Pipeline.

*********************************************************************************

So you think Giants catching prospect Rodolfo Bone has an 80 grade name?  If that is true, we'll just have to expand the scale to 90 for Hudson Head, a 5-tool HS OF who is shooting up draft boards after a breakout senior season.  He is ranked #122 by MLBP.  More in the 60 grade name range is OF Matthew Barefoot a college OF from Campbell. He's ranked #148. Scouts like him better as a pitcher, but he insists he's a hitter choosing Campbell because it was the only college that would let him hit and he's actually done it very well.  We know he has a great OF arm.

*********************************************************************************

My impression of the overall draft class after combing through the MLB Pipeline scouting reports is this class actually has some depth through at least round 5.  It is extremely deep in both college and HS shortstops and both the college and HS pitching are underrated.

Down on the Farm: 5/27/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outslugged the Albuquerque Isotopes 12-5:

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .349.
Anthony Garcia LF- 4 for 5.  BA= .293.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .244.
Ryan Howard 3B- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .246.
Levi Michael 2B- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .268.
Pat Venditte LHP/RHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.13.
Steven Okert LHP- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.47.
Fernando Abad LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(5).  ERA= 2.41.

More sillyball in the Albuquerque launching pad.  Was Pat Venditte an Opener here or are they stretching him out to try starting?  Steven Okert is an enigma.  He's got this terrible ERA, which seems well deserved but his K/BB is 39/3 in 24.2 IP and 2 of the BB's were IBB's.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Akron Rubber Ducks downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-2:

Gio Brusa 1B- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .300.
Garrett Williams LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.45.

*********************************************************************************

A+ San Jose Giants edged out the Lancaster Jethawks 2-1:

Randy Norris DH- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .286.
Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 4, Assist(3B).  BA= .269.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .261.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 2, HR(2), BB.  .259.
Jake Wong RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.   ERA= 4.50.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Frank Rubio RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(5).  ERA= 0.34.

Heliot Ramos is back from the IL!  Jake Wong's second Cal League start is significantly better than his first.  Ramos and Joey Bart are obviously the big stories in San Jose this season but the success of Jake Wong and Sean Hjelle in meeting the Cal League challenge may be almost as important for enabling the Giants to "rebuild" relatively quickly, because the Giants starting rotation is a complete shambles and will be a lot worse after Bummy gets traded.  Not saying Wong and Hjelle are going to help this season, but if they can dominate the Cal League, they should be on the fast track after that.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-4:

Shane Matheny 3B- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .227.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .258.
Seth Corry LHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.84.
Cooper Casad RHP- 3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.45.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.18.

Seth Corry still showing bouts of wildness.

Down on the Farm: 5/26/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats smashed the Albuquerque Isotopes 16-8:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 6, 3B.  BA= .282.
Henry Ramos RF- 1 for 4, HR(7), BB, SF.  BA= .258.
Mike Gerber CF- 3 for 5, 3B, 2 HR(10), BB.  BA= .342.
Anthony Garcia LF- 1 for 3, HR(6), 3 BB.  BA= .274.
Aramis Garcia C/1B- 4 for 6, 2B, HR(7).  BA= .246.

More silly ball in the PCL.  Every pitcher to appear in this game on both teams allowed at least 1 ER.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Akron Rubber Ducks 3-2:

Jacob Heyward LF- 2 for 4, HR(6), HBP.   BA= .268.
Chris Shaw DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .289.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .244.
Hansel Marte C- 2 for 4.  BA= .191.
Alfred Gutierrez RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.54.
Sam Moll LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.23.
Melvin Adon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(6).  ERA= 4.03.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants vs Visalia Rawhide Suspended after 2 innings.

Wow! More rain in California!  We had a steady light rain for a couple of hours last night in the IE.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets stung the Greenville Drive 7-2:

Anyesber Sivira 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Andrew Angulo C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .195.
Aaron Bond RF- 3 for 4, 2 HR(6).  BA= .174.
Blake Rivera RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.96.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(3).  ERA= 4.05.

Aynesber Sivira seems like a dynamic player, but doesn't seem to hit consistently.  Aaron Bond breaks out of an 0 for 16 slump(and 1 for 24).

Game Wrap 5/26/2019: D'Backs 6 Giants 2

Shaun Anderson fell victim to first inning disease which has infected the entire Giants pitching staff(yes, it happened when they tried to use an "opener").  That and some sloppy fielding ruined his start and the game for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .245.  Panik scuffled for the first two games of the series but missed a HR by a about a foot leading off the first inning when his drive hit about that far down from the metal facing of the RF arcade.  He added a single later in the game and hit another drive that was caught in Triples Alley aka Death Valley that would have been a dinger in any other ballpark.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .252.  Buster was coming off an 0 for 9 slump but his bat looked good in this game.

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .429.  OK, baby steps are OK here.  I didn't see the double but the first two hits were both soft liners and he did get thrown out by rounding too far past 1B on his first MLB hit, but right now singles and doubles from the LF is a huge upgrade over what the Giants have gotten so far.  Give him a longer look!

Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 8/1.  ERA= 4.80.  There was nothing BABIPy about Ketel Marte's that went over the high wall above the 421 ft. sign, but the rest of the scoring could be chalked up to a combination of BABIP luck and sloppy fielding including a couple of Wild Pitches by Anderson himself.

Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Coonrod makes his MLB debut after getting called up to replace Andrew Suarez.  Coonrod gives the Giants an extra arm the bullpen for now.  Most likely DRod replaces Suarez in the rotation.  Anyway, Coonrod was impressive throwing 98 MPH heat with a curveball to back it up. He almost certainly earned himself a longer look.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 13.5 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers and 7.5 games behind in the Wild Card race.  Giants were outscored 34-8 in the series, an embarrassing beatdown, one of the worst in my memory and I've been a Giants fan for a very long time.

The Giants have pretty much backed themselves into a corner for now.  Options for shuttling people in and out are dwindling.  Yes, there is Mike Gerber and Austin Slater and there's Tyler Beede, but they've already been tried once and found wanting.  In the short term, they need to find some stability in the lineup and in the rotation.  The former will be easier to accomplish.  The Trade deadline is looming and the die is about cast for them to be serious sellers.  At minimum they will need to trade any players who will be free agents at the end of the season.  More if they can find takers for some bad contracts. We'll just have to wait until the smoke has cleared from that to survey the landscape and see what talent has been added after the Draft, July 2 and the Trade Deadline.  That is Farhan's next big test.

Scouting the Draft: Second Round Options

OK, I'm bored.  Can't stand to watch the game anymore.  I'll try to write up a post about who the Giants might draft with the 51'st pick overall pick in the second round.  Predicting the first round is hard enough in the baseball draft.  Beyond that, it's like finding a needle in a haystack.  The best we can do is to look at some names that are ranked in that range to get an idea of the type/quality of player who might be available.  MCC had a recent post pointing out how difficult it is to find talent beyond the first round of the baseball draft, to the point where you have to wonder if there is any point to having a draft of more than 1 round at all!  If the MCC author is correct, and I don't have the time to dig it out myself, in the entire history of the MLB draft, there have been just 3 players drafted 51 to accumulate more the 3 WAR in their career(Yikes!  Is that right?).

One big problem with trying to project this is the large divergence between different analysts who know way more about this than me.  I'm just using MLB Pipeline and Fangraphs(I don't subscribe to BA).  Their lists are way different.  So here we go:

Given the general futility of finding an impact player beyond the first round, I feel like rounds 2-4 are great spots to swing for the fence and go for upside with almost no regard to risk.  I mean, if the success rate is 3 out of 51, there is no risk other than bonus money which nowadays is relatively negligible.  With that in mind, there are a couple of HS prospects who were ranked higher in this draft cycle whose stock has dropped.  Spencer Jones LHP/1B/OF? and Rene Hinds, 3B.  I've profiled both of them.  Jones is a left-handed 2-way prospect with a ton of projection who has not played much this season due to a fracture near his elbow.  Fangraphs says there are still teams out there dangling $2 M bonuses though.  BTW, Keith Law hates him.  LOL Keith Law!  Hinds is a big kid with some of the best raw power in the draft, but with serious questions about his hit tool.

The Giants have trouble attracting power hitters as free agents.  If Hinds is too much risk for your taste, what about a couple of college power hitters?

Drew Mendoza 3B, College(Florida State).  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 190 lbs.  .303/.478/.595, 14 HR, 24.90 BB%, 24.9 K%.  Ranked #55 by both MLB and Fangraphs, the only draft prospect they rank the same in this range.  Mendoza has been on scouting radars since HS.  A three true outcomes guy with a sweet swing.  Rap on him is a perceived lack of enthusiasm on the field.

Matt Wallner OF, College(Southern Mississippi).  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 220 lbs.  .315/.431/.665, 19 HR, 16.26 BB%, 17.48 K%.  Corner OF with an arm strong enough to pitch.  Makes more contact than Mendoza which may give him more access to his power.  Ranked #56 by Fangraphs, #60 by MLB.

Logan Wyatt, a power hitting 1B for Louisville might be a consideration here.  It sounds like he may have a significantly better bat then Mendoza or Wallner but is limited to 1B defensively.

Want to take a chance on a fast-twitch up-the-middle athlete?  MLB lists a couple of HS SS's at #50 and 51, Kyren Paris and Nasim Nunez.  Nunez is rated as the best defensive SS in the draft but is relatively small and the bat, while projectable, is a big question mark.  Paris may not stick at SS, but has elite speed and projects as an elite defensive CF.  Again, size is a concern with the bat. Oh, and it's possible neither will be on the board at #51 as Fangraphs has them ranked #33 and #31 respectively.

There are a couple of college pitchers who would make solid picks here:

Matt Canterino RHP, College(Rice).  6-5, 2.90, 93 IP, 21 BB, 112 K.  He's got nice size and put up similar numbers in the Cape Cod League.  #49 Fangraphs, #46 MLB.

Drey Jameson RHP, College(Ball St).  5-3, 3.05, 85.2 IP, 29 BB, 136 K's.  Average size.  Mid-90's FB with a couple of secondary pitches.  He's got some effort in the delivery and looks a bit relieverish.  # 49 MLB, #44 Fangraphs.

There is a Joe Panik clone lurking in this range.  He'd probably be the pick if John Barr was still in charge of draft(BTW, John Barr does still work for the Giants and was reportedly seen scouting Bryson Stott recently):

Josh Smith SS, College(LSU).  B-L, T-R.  .341/.431/.507, 7 HR, 15 SB, 9.68 BB%, 15.73 K%, 248 PA.  Maybe a tad more power and speed than Panik? #50 Fangraphs, #76 MLB.

There are several projectable HS pitchers in this range who could be possibilities:

Josh Wolf RHP, HS.  6'2", 175 lbs.  #36 MLB, #51 Fangraphs.  Has some helium with a FB in the mid-high 90's.  #36 might be closer to his true draft position, which could go even higher.

Blake Walston LHP, HS.  6'4", 175 lbs.  #52 MLB, #39 Fangraphs.  Projectable lefty.  Works 90-93 MPH in games but needs to add strength to keep it going later in games.

Bryce Osmond RHP, HS.  6/3", 175 lbs.  #53 MLB, #69 Fangraphs.  Projectable RHP who currently works in the low 90's.  Very athletic and also a legitimate SS prospect. Apparently not from THAT Osmond family, but who knows?  It's a big family!

Kendall Williams RHP, HS.  6'6", 190 lbs.  #54 MLB, # 84 Fangraphs.  More physical projection than others in this range, but average current stuff. Signability issues as he's committed to Vanderbilt.

The Giants will most likely select someone who is not mentioned in this post, but whoever it is should be an intriguing prospect.

Down on the Farm: 5/25/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outslugged the Albuquerque Isotopes 10-6:

Mike Gerber CF- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(8), BB.  BA= .333.
Anthony Garcia LF- 3 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .273.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .222.
Henry Ramos RF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .258.
Levi Michael 3B- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .254.

Mike Yastrzemski is a bum!  DFA him and call up Mike Gerber!(just kidding.  That's for next week!).

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels sank the Akron Rubber Ducks 6-3:

Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .285.
Jalen Miller DH- 2 for 4, BB, SB(12).  BA= .239.
Zach Houchins 3B- 2 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .130.
Will Maddox 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .206.
Conner Menez LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.40.
Kieren Lovegrove RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 8.44.

Chris Shaw is feeling his oats on the basepaths, 2 SB's in his last 3 games.  Zach Houchins was a FA add after being dropped by the Angels.  Hank Schulman seems to have word that Conner Menez will be getting a promotion to AAA and for more than a spot start.

*********************************************************************************

A+. Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 4-2:

Sean Hjelle RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 11/2.  ERA= 1.50.

Solid Cal League Debut for the Giants 2'nd round draft pick from 2018.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 4-0(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Keaton Winn RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.92.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive outscored the Greenville Drive 16-10(10 innings, Game 2 of DH):

Diego Rincones LF/RF- 3 for 3, HR(1), BB, SF.  BA= .272.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 3 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .230.
Jeffry Parra C- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .193.

Much like their MLB affiliate, the GJ's ran out of pitches and let SS Nico Giarratano finish it out despite him giving up 4 runs in the 10'th.

Game Wrap 5/25/2019: D'Backs 10 Giants 4

If last night's game was like a tsunami of runs washing over the Giants in wave after wave, this one was more like the rising waters of a midwest river in the spring.  It didn't quite have the same feeling of a beatdown but after a 4 spot in the 5'th innings it was suddenly a 10-1 deficit.  Game over.  The Giants put up a 3-spot of their own in the 7'th inning to make the score closer than the game actually was.  Key Lines:

Andrew Suarez LHP- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Suarez didn't have either great stuff or  great command and the result was a rough Start.  Tough to see where Suarez goes from here.  He's needs better pitches or better command or both.  Not sure where/how he finds that.  Maybe spend some time with the Driveline guy?

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.81.  Baby steps for DRod.
The secondary stats are not particularly encouraging here.  Maybe he can pitch long relief for awhile and pull his game together?

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 0 for 3, HBP.  BA= .000.   Kind cool to see the grandson of a legend from my childhood make his MLB debut.  It went about the way you would expect from a guy who was playing in his fourth AAA season and put up some shiny stats in an already extreme hitter's league paying with a juiced ball.  If the Giants want their hitting prospects to stop doing faceplants when they are called up, they might want to lobby whoever needs to be lobbied to change the ball back in the PCL or else move their AAA affiliate to the International League.

*********************************************************************************

It's probably a moot issue where this Loss leaves the Giants in the standings.  Needless to say, they did not gain any ground.

*********************************************************************************

Shaun Anderson tries to be a Stopper tomorrow afternoon but is facing a hot pitcher in Luke Weaver.

*********************************************************************************

Mac got the DFA ax and Trevor Gott hit the 10 day IL with a forearm strain to make room for Yaz the Younger and DRod.  I know folks are saying Mac had his chance.  He did look lost at the plate so I can't exactly say he deserved a longer leash, but 56 PA's is not a sample size that has any meaning whatsoever.  I still say Mac is the one guy currently in the organization who had a chance to hit 30 dingers out of the LF position(OK maybe Tyler Austin fits that description but he has yet to show he can play LF).  Mac obviously witnessed the endless roster churning and knew his status in the organization.  You could see the pressure building with each boxscore.

We will probably never know what went down between Mac and Boch years ago that put him in the skipper's doghouse, but he never really worked his way completely out of it.  That did not help his cause with Zaidi I am sure.  This callup felt like something Farhan and Boch had to do to appease the mob with pitchforks in the fanbase.  As soon as Mac's struggles guaranteed a muted reaction, boom!

I hope Mac gets a chance with another organization or maybe in Asia.  If he isn't claimed off waivers, he should elect free agency and explore all options.  He does deserve to leave the game with a bit of financial security.  As for Yaz the Younger, I want him to succeed too.  He's got his own set of unrealistic expectations to deal with and a restless GM and Manager ratcheting up the pressure.  At this point who plays LF is almost a moot issue.  Until the Giants solve their pitching issues, it doesn't matter, which I guess is an argument that maybe Mac should have been given more time.

Down on the Farm: 5/24/2019

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 1-0:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 0 for 4.  BA= .316.
Tyler Beede RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.   ERA= 2.34.
Williams Jerez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.63.
Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.79.

This is the kind of game you want from Tyler Beede and the kind the Giants need a lot more of these days.  Can he get over the MLB hump?  Yaz the Younger is getting the callup, but is it too late?  He's 0 for 8 with 4 K's in his last two games.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Akron Rubber Ducks outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1(13 innings):

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 5, 2B, BB. BA= .284.
Gio Brusa DH- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .308.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.95.
Sam Wolff RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.29.
Melvin Adon RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.22.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Sam Moll LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.

Some interesting arms in the Richmond bullpen.

*********************************************************************************

A+ Visalia Rawhide topped the San Jose Giants 5-4:

Peter Maris DH- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .417.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 4, SB(6).  BA= .239.
Solomon Bates RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.22.

*********************************************************************************

A  Rome Braves pounded the Augusta Greenjackets 9-4:

Mikey Edie RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .247.
Shane Matheny 2B- 1 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .236.
Diego Rincones LF- 1 for 3, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .258.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .221.
Jesus Tona RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.14.

This is the second time Jesus Tona has gone 3 innings this month.  He's a guy who needs to move fast due to getting a late start on pitching, but could he be used as a SP?

Game Wrap 5/24/2019: D'Backs 18 Giants 2

The D'Backs took advantage of an exhausted pitching staff in a merciless beatdown in the Giants home ballpark.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar made a great catch.  Pablo Sandoval had 2 hits coming in off the bench.  We'll give the key line to Tyler Austin who hit his 3'rd HR in 3 games.  Toonder!  Now Boch and Farhan have to figure out how to use him.  Seems like he might be too good to limit to the short side of a platoon with Belt.  Could he handle LF with more experience?

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 2.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 6.45.  The D'Backs TV feed showed Pomeranz warming up.  I thought it looked like he was protecting his side and/or shoulder, but he had a good fastball in the game which produced swinging strikes and 6 K's out of 8 outs recorded.  I was watching the game out of the corner of my eye while preparing dinner, but it sounded like his secondary pitches didn't have much on them.  There was also come BABIP bad luck.  Of the 8 hits he gave up, there was 1 HR, 3 hard LD's, 1 soft LD, 3 GB's.  Enigma.

Bullpen- 6.1 IP, 13 H, 13 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  This is what happens when you rely on "5 and dive" SP's and expect 4-5 innings out of your bullpen day in and day out.  It's not sustainable. You can mitigate it some by shuttling relievers on and off the DL and up and down from AAA, but at some point you need SP's who can reliably give you 7+ innings.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss put the Giants 11.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 7 games behind in the Wild Card race.  My rule is you are out of postseason contention when you are 10 or more games out of the Wild Card.  At this rate we're about 1 week away from sticking a fork in the Giants season.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants send LHP Andrew Suarez out today to see if he can give them another QS facing rookie RHP Taylor Clarke who also got pounded in the PCL but is coming off a good MLB start.

*********************************************************************************

Word this AM that Yaz the Younger is getting the callup.  No word on who's getting shipped out.  I know there are a lot of Yaz bandwagoners out there, but y'all might want to curb your enthusiasm.  He's 28 yo and in his 4'th AAA season.  It also might be too late to catch lightening in a bottle with him as he's 0 for 8 with 2 BB's and 4 K's in his last 2 games.

Scouting the 2019 Draft: Alek Manoah; Jackson Rutledge

I'm starting a 4-day weekend.  Will try to write up some draft posts.  We'll start with a couple of pitchers who are flirting with top 10 draft status, one of whom the Giants have reportedly been scouting.

*********************************************************************************

Alek Manoah RHP, College(West Virginia).  6'6", 260 lbs.

2019(College):  8-3, 1.91, 94 IP, 22 BB, 125 K's.
2019(Cape Cod League):  3-2, 2.70, 33.1 IP, 11 BB, 48 K's.

Alek Manoah is a big-body RHP with enough athleticism that he was a 2-way player in HS.  He's concentrated on pitching in college and graduated from reliever to starter when he led the Cape Cod League in K's in the summer of 2018.  He remained a SP for his junior season at West Virginia.  His draft stock rose dramatically as a lot of hard work on developing his game came together. He is now both a physical pitcher with upside with the kind of polish you want to see from a college pitcher.

He's always had a big fastball that runs 94-97 MPH with sink.  His command of the pitch improved dramatically while he developed a late breaking slider to complement it.  He also has a better than decent changeup which he showed more of on the Cape than the college season.  He'll need that pitch to be a SP in the pros.

The Giants reportedly have interest with the #10 pick.  I want them to draft a college hitter, and they have also been linked to SS Bryson Stott.  I see Stott as being the bottom of the top tier of college hitters so if he's already off the board at #10, I would probably favor drafting Manoah over anyone from the second tier.

*********************************************************************************

Jackson Rutledge RHP.  JC.  6'8", 250 lbs.

Rutledge is another big RHP  with some helium coming into the draft and is starting to get some top 10 buzz.  His just a bit longer and leaner than Alek Manoah with a similar repertoire and a similar history of harnessing premium stuff.  One scouting report I read has him throwing 5 pitches, 4-seam, 2-seam, slider, curve and changeup.  The FB sits mid-90's and reaches 97 MPH and his height gives him an extra foot or two from a forward release point as well as the coveted downward plane.

I think you could almost flip a coin between Manoah and Rutledge with Manoah maybe having a bit more college polish and thus a higher floor but Rutledge possibly having a higher ceiling due to the taller, slightly thinner frame.

Down on the Farm: 5/23/2019

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees swarmed the Sacramento River Cats 7-1:

Sam Selman LHP- 1.2 P, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.59.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.63.

Ray Black is back....again....for now.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-1:

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .279.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .304.

*********************************************************************************

A+ San Jose Giants crushed the Modesto Nuts 6-1:

Bryce Johnson CF- 4 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .247.
Peter Maris DH- 1 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .429.
Courtney Hawkins LF- 3 for 5.  BA= .333.
Randy Norris RF- 1 for 2, 3B, BB.  BA= .300.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.02.
John Gavin LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.26.

Aaron Phillips has a 1.69 ERA over his last 3 starts(16 IP).  John Gavin has 34 K's and 13 BB's in 30.1 IP.  I seems like Peter Maris can hit.  We'll have to wait for a full recovery from TJ to see him play a position.

*********************************************************************************

A  Rome Braves topped the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Keith Weisenberg RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Matt Seelinger RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

A couple of recent acquisitions pitched well here.  Weisenberg pitched for Stanford.  It looks like he was picked up after being released by the Braves organization.  Seelinger was acquired as the PTBNL when Eric Kratz was traded to the Rays.

Game Wrap 5/23/2019: Braves 5 Giants 4(13 innings)

There are some Losses in baseball where you just shrug and say "oh well, we never really had a chance to win that one anyway," and move on.  This was not one of those games.  The Giants appeared to be three outs away from a win when the normally reliable Tony Watson gave up a 2-run blast to rookie Austin Riley.  The Braves went on to win the attrition game in 13 innings.  That hurts! Not only did they lose a game they thought they should have won but burned up the pitching staff in the process.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .257.  Joe Panik is hitting .352 over his last 15 games.

Even Longoria 3B- 1 for 3, 2B, 3 BB.  BA= .234.  Longo has an OPS of .875 over his last 30 games and .950 over his last 15.

Mac Williamson LF- 0 for 5, 5 K's.  BA= .128.  Yikes!  I'm thinking Mac better get it in gear pretty soon or he may be trying to do it for another team or else back in Sacramento.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 4.10. Another QS for Bummy who has 6 in 11 Starts this season.  ERA 3.86 over his last 5 Starts in May.

Tyler Austin PH- 1 for 1, HR(4).  BA= .268.  OPS= .913.  Toonder!

Reyes Moronta RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.86.  Moronta takes the Loss.  He has been used a lot and in a lot of high stress situations and it may be starting to show.  He might be a candidate for an "injury" and a 10 day IL stay in the near future.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants 10.5 games behind the idle Dodgers and 6 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants don't get a breather as they head into a weekend series against the D'Backs with Drew Pomeranz facing fellow lefty Robbie Ray in game 1 tonight.

Game Wrap 5/22/2019: Braves 9 Giants 2

Jeff Samardzija was charged with a throwing error when nobody covered second base on a potential GIDP comebacker.  That miscue led to 6 unearned runs for the Braves in the second inning and ruined what could have been a scoreless Quality Start and possibly a Win.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 2, HR(3), BB.  BA= .255.  There is some toonder in Austin's bat.  3 dingers in 63 PA projects to just under 30/600.  Has he been working on tracking fly balls in LF?

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.27.  See intro above.

Derek Holland LHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.30.  It's another ugly line, but I'm going to look for the silver lining and ask if maybe Holland found something in the scoreless 8'th and 9'th innings?

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers actually lost a game, so the Giants remain 10 games behind them in the NL West.  The real race to look at, though is the Wild Card and the Giants dropped 5 games off the pace there.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries for a series split tomorrow facing RHP Kevin Gausman.

Forgot to mention that LHP Travis Bergen was place on the IL with....ahem....a shoulder strain.  The move made room for Donovan Solano to return to the Active Roster and give the Giants 4 position players on the bench.

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees outscored the Sacramento River Cats 9-8:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 4 for 4.  BA= .289.
Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .331.
Aramis Garcia 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .230.
Henry Ramos DH- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .252.
Ryan Howard 3B- 4 for 5.  BA= .244.
Levi Michael 2B- 1 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .218.
Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 1.2 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.52.
Pat Venditte RHP/LHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.64.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.00.

Abiatal Avelino is the latest River Cats hitter to go off on a red hot streak.  He's hitting .346 in May and .405 over his last 10 games.  I guess this is the night for fielders to protect pitchers' ERA's by committing errors?  Starts like this aren't going to get DRod back to Oracle Park anytime soon.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils blasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-1:

Chase Johnson RHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.94.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Tyler Cyr is quietly off to a nice start to his season with 16 K's and 3 BB's in 12 IP, 9 Appearances. In 5 AA Appearances, Raffi Vizcaino has 9 K's and 2 BB in 6.1 IP.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 4-1:

David Villar 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .247.
Jake Wong RHP- 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 9.00.
Joey Marciano LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.68.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.95.

Welcome to the Cal League, Jake Wong.  Peripherals suggest he pitched great but the ERA is ugly.  Camilo Doval has a 1.88 ERA with 21 K's and 9 BB's in 14.1 IP over his last 10 Appearances. So, despite that success, the BB's still need to come down.

*********************************************************************************

A Augusta Greenjackets topped the Rome Braves 6-5:

Mikey Edie RF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .239.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .235.
Jeffry Parra C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .195.
Orlando Garcia SS- 3 for 3, 2B.  BA= .161.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

I missed Orlando Garcia's demotion to Augusta on 5/15.  Sandro Cabrera was pitching for AA Richmond before tonight.

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outscored the Salt Lake City Bees 10-7:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .336.
Austin Slater 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .331.
Mike Gerber LF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .328.
Aramis Garcia C- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .227.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 4, 2 3B, SF.  BA= .275.
Williams Jerez LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.74.
Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.36.

I hope MLB is no longer trying to deny the ball is juiced.  Per Kruk and Kuip, the HR rate in the PCL doubled from last year.  Yeah, you read that right, doubled!  The difference?  PCL started using the MLB ball in their games.

*********************************************************************************

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels subdued the Reading Fightin' Phils 8-4:

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .273.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 1 for 2, HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .299.

Frank Rubio RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 0.36.

*********************************************************************************

A  Rome Braves topped the Augusta Greenjackets 7-5:

Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 4. BA= .258.
Jeffry Parra C- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .176.
Blake Rivera RHP- 4.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.01.

Game Wrap 5/21/2019: Giants 4 Braves 3

So, I have a confession.  I've been working hard lately, taying up late, getting up early with bouts of insomnia in between.  So, when the Giants failed to score in the 7'th inning trailing 3-1, I packed it in and went to bed.  I missed a pretty darn exciting comeback in the 9'th inning capped by Joe Panik's walkoff 2-run single.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .254.  Over his last 15 games, Panik is slashing .346/.470/.442.  In addition to the game-tying and winning RBI's he scored the Giants first run in the first inning on Evan Longoria's double.

Giants 9'th Inning:  With one out, Brandon Crawford singled.  Steven Duggar struck out to leave a runner on first with 2 outs.  Crawford took 2b on defensive indifference and was singled home by Kevin Pillar who then stole 2B.  PH Pablo Sandoval came through again with a single on which Pillar only advanced to 3B.  Mac Williamson then pinch ran for Pabs and stole 2B which set up Panik for the walk-off hit.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.60.  Pretty much a carbon copy of his first Start.  Anderson started the 6'th inning allowing B2B singles which brought in Reyes Moronta.  2 fly balls brought in 1 run, but Moronta limited the damage with a groundout to end the inning.  Moronta and Sam Dyson allowed another run in the 7'th inning and Mark Melancon and Trevor Gott pitched scoreless 8'th and 9'th innings respectively.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers are probably uncatchable in the NL West, but the Win cut the Giants deficit in the Wild Card race to 4 games.

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies outlasted the Sacramento River Cats 4-2(10 innings):

Austin Slater 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .331.
Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .194.
Enderson Franco RHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.94.

Austin Slater take over as officially the hottest batter in Sacramento.  Enderson Franco has a QS after giving up 16 ER in 12.2 IP over his last 3 Starts.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

A+  San Jose Giants and the Cal League were idle.

A  Charleston River Dogs defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 5-2:

Jacob Gonzalez RHP- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .220.
Keaton Winn RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.82.

Sean Hjelle and Jake Wong get promotions to San Jose, a more age/experience appropriate level for them.

Game Wrap 5/20/2019: Braves 4 Giants 1

Brandon Crawford had the Giants only two hits on the night as they were dominated by the pitching of Mike Soroka in another faceplant at the start of a homestand.  Key Lines:

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .212.  At least Crawford's bat is showing some signs of life with 2 HR's in his last 5 games.  He is 4 for 16 in that span and 3 for 8 over his last 3 games.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.50.  Suarez produces a QS in a losing cause which is a lot better than anyone could have expected after a series of very rough Starts in Sacramento.  Does this one buy him another?

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants 10 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 5 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Shaun Anderson makes his second MLB Start tomorrow evening facing veteran Julio Teheran.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants optioned IF Donovan Solano to Sacramento to make room on the roster for Andrew Suarez.  The moves gave the Giants 14 pitchers and 11 position players which means they had just 3 position players on the bench for this game.  Who's on the bubble now?

*********************************************************************************

The Giants got their PTBNL from the Rays to complete the Eric Kratz trade.  The players coming back is RHP Matt Seelinger, a late round draft pick from 2017 by the Pirates.  He has been on the Closer track with a Bucs and Rays.  He put up strong numbers last year but had struggled this season in a 9 inning sample size.  The Giants essentially bought Seelinger from the Rays by agreeing to pay most of Kratz' 2019 salary.

Down on the Farm: 5/19/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats survived the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .333.
Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .325.
Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .319.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 3 for 3, 2 2B.  BA= .273.
Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.60
Sam Selman LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.84.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.70.

Typical Beede start.  He's got to do better than that.  Giants are desperate enough for SP's.  I wonder if they would consider stretching out Sam Selman?  Tyler Rogers might make an interesting "opener" when the scheduled long man is a LHP.

*********************************************************************************

AAA  Sacramento River Cats tamed the Fresno Grizzlies 7-0(7 innings, Game 2 of DH):

Mike Yastrzemski LF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .342.
Austin Slater 3B- 1 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .317.
Francisco Pena C- 1 for 3, HR2).  BA= .362.
Carlos Navas RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.11.
Pat Venditte LHP/RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.93.
Jandel Gustave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 10.13.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.41.

Austin Slater is hitting a much higher percentage of fly balls this season and it's translating into HR's.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels sank the Akron Rubber Ducks 5-2:

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(9).  BA= .231.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .264.
Jacob Heyward DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .289.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.50.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Melvin Adon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.74.

This was Caleb Baragar's second QS in a row.  He's allowed just 7 H in 12.2 IP, 1 BB, 9 K's in those two games.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants vs Inland Empire 66'ers postponed X 2 games.

*********************************************************************************

Augusta Greenjackets outlasted the Charleston River Dogs 8-5(13 innings):

Ismael Munguia LF- 3 for 6, 2 3B.  BA= .313.
Diego Rincones DH- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .281.
Preston White RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.91.
Ryan Walker RHP- 2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.67.
Luis Amaya LHP- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Luis Amaya has pitched 15 scoreless innings with 17 K's and just 3 BB's since starting his season.  This was his longest appearance.  Franklin Van Gurp has pitched 2 scoreless frames in each of his last 3 appearances with 7 K's and 1 BB.

Game Wrap 5/19/2019: Giants 3 D'Backs 2(10 innings)

Pablo Sandoval broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the 9'th inning with his second PH HR in 2 games to reward some tenacious relief pitching and defense.  Key Lines:

Giants 3'rd inning- Joe Panik and Donovan Solano lead off the inning with singles.  Walks to Tyler Austin and Evan Longoria bring in one run.  A groundout by Kevin Pillar makes it two.  That ended the Giants scoring until Sandoval's blast in the 10'th.

Pablo Sandoval PH- 1 for 1, HR(7).  BA= .301.  Sandoval is now tied with Brandon Belt for the team lead in HR's.  He also has 4 HR's in his last 7 games.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.66.  Pomeranz huffed and puffed his way through 96 pitches, 96, and didn't make it to the end of the 5'th inning.

Bullpen- 5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  Trevor Gott got the final out of the 5'th inning then pitched a full 6'th inning.  Mark Melancon, Tony Watson and Sam Dyson all threw scoreless frames.  Will Smith struck out the side for his 12'th Save.  Smith has recorded 9 K's in his last 3 IP over 3 appearances.

*********************************************************************************

The Win gave the Giants a series Win and kept them 9.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West allowed them to gain ground in the Wild Card race where they now trail by 4.5 games.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants return home from the weekend trip to Phoenix to start a homestand and series against the Braves with Andrew Suarez getting called up to start game 1 against Mike Soroka.  It's a curious choice since Suarez has a 6.33 ERA for Sacramento and has given up 12 ER in 13.2 IP over his last 3 Starts.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants DFA'd Aaron Altherr after just 1 AB in a very brief Giants tenure to make room for Pomeranz to come off the DL.  There are now 3 possibilities for Altherr:  1.  Clear waivers and go to Sacramento to try to get his game together.  2.  Giants work out a trade for a low level prospect.  3.  Giants release him or allow him to be claimed by another organization.  2 of those are positive outcomes and the other is not a loss...unless you considered Andrew Moore and top pitching prospect.  That's the positive spin on Farhan Zaidi's seemingly endless rosterbations.

Game Wrap 5/18/2019: Giants 8 D'Backs 5

A day after playing one of their weakest games in recent memory, the Giants came out acting like they wanted to win and did.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .252.  Joe Panik is turning his season around, batting .345 over his last 15 games with a .448 OBP.  His OBP on the season is a respectable .342 and he has almost as many walks(17) as K's(18).

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .256.  Every time we think Duggar is folding up for the season, he comes up with a game like this.  His triple down the 1B line and into the RF corner was the linchpin of the Giants 3-run rally in the third inning.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 5.  BA= .261.  Buster's bat was heating up before going on the DL and it's staying hot.  .304 over his last 7 games and .321 over his last 15.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .237.  Belt is hitting .294 over his last 7 games and leads the team in HR's.  Sandoval, Longo and Pillar have 6 each.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .205.  Crawford has been struggling at the plate.  Hopefully this is the start of a turnaround?

Mac Williamson LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .176.  Baby steps for Mac. This hit came with an RBI.

Pablo Sandoval PH- 1 for 1, HR(6).  BA= .293.  Pabs is hitting .400 over his last 7 games with a .950 SLG%.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.21.  I'm mad at Bochy.  I have Bummy on my fantasy team in a league that counts QS rather than W's.  He had a QS nicely tucked away after 6 innings then gave up 2 runs while recording just 1 out in the 7'th.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants gained a game in the standings and now trail the Dodgers by 9.5 and are 5 games behind in the Wild Card race.

*********************************************************************************

TBD is the listed Giants starting pitcher today facing Robbie Ray.  Word is that TBD is a cover for Drew Pomeranz.  We'll see if the Giants use an Opener.

Kieren Lovegrove RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.24.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Gotta wonder how long before Farhan Zaidi is tempted to dump Mac and call up Young Yaz to be the next Giants player to find out hitting in MLB is a lot different than the PCL?  QS after being sent down by DRod who also found out it's a lot easier to hit in the PCL.

SJ Giants have faced the Padres top pitching prospect twice in the last 2 weeks and won both game, although he pitched 5 scoreless innings in this one.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Charleston River Dogs 8-3(10 innings):

Mikey Edie DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .214.
Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 5, 3B. BA= .281.
Aaron Bond RF- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .179.
Jose Layer CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .194.
Seth Corry LHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.20.
Tyler Schimpf RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 7.13.
Ben Madison RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Seth Corry has 53 K's in 32.2 IP, but also has 21 BB's. Diego Rincones' BA hit a nadir of .235 on May 8.  In 11 games since, he is hitting .415.

Game Wrap 5/17/2019: D'Backs 7 Giants 0

Jeff Samardzija came ready to pitch but still could not get through 6 innings and the offense sputtered, leaving 6 runners in scoring position in a lopsided loss.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.  The first 4 batters in the lineup, Panik, Steven Duggar, Buster Posey and Brandon Belt, were a combined 7 for 16 with 4 doubles, and none of them scored.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.69.  Shark got through the first inning on something like 7 pitches gave up a HR in the 4'th to David Peralta(who else?) then ran into trouble in the 6'th when he walked Jarrod Dyson leading off.  Dyson stole 2B.  Shark then intentionally walked Peralta and Adam Jones doubled in a run.  That brought out Boch who summoned Reyes Moronta.  Moronta blew up Ketel Marte's bat but the comebacker was hard enough to carom off Moronta into no-man's land and another run scored.  Shark also battled an inconsistent strike zone but walked zero batters so the BABIP luck finally ran out.

Derek Holland LHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 7.36.  Holland immediately dug himself a hole by walking the leadoff batter.  Wilmer Flores then singled on a soft liner to RF that Kevin Pillar couldn't get to.  Jarrod Dyson then clearly bunted at a ball that hit him on the hand.  The Home Plate ump inexplicably awarded him first base then ejected Bruce Bochy with a quick trigger.  Eduardo Escobar then hit a line drive with a lot of hang time that managed to get to ground down the RF line.  A couple of line drives later the inning finally ended with a 4-spot for the D'Backs and the Giants thoroughly beaten.  There was some bad luck and bad umpiring here, but you gotta think Holland's days on the team are numbered.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants are now 10.5 games out of first place and essentially out of the NL West race.  They also fall 6 games off the Wild Card pace, so are rapidly falling out of playoff contention too.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to bolster his trade value tonight facing Zack Godley.

*********************************************************************************

A commenter asked if the Giants could trade Madison Bumgarner for a higher draft pick.  The answer is no, they can't.  Only Competitive Balance picks can be traded in the MLB draft.

The Giants have officially swapped positions for Steven Duggar and Kevin Pillar due to metrics showing Duggar to be the superior defender in CF.  This does not bode well for Pillar's future with the team as almost all of his value lies in his ability to play CF.  Look for Aaron Altherr to start getting some starts in right or left field depending on how they want to align him and Mac.

Scouting the 2019 Draft: Hunter Bishop

Hunter Bishop OF, College(Arizona State).  B-L, T-R.  6'5", 210 lbs.

2019:  .366/.492/.814, 13 2B, 4 3B, 22 HR, 11 SB, 16.94 BB/9, 21.90 K/9, 242 PA.

A huge junior season breakout vaulted Hunter Bishop into top 10 consideration as the 2019 draft approaches.  Intriguing for Giants fans is he went to HS at Junipero Serra in San Mateo and attended college at Barry Bonds' alma mater.  His brother is highly regarded OF prospect Braden Bishop. He's a 5-tool player with enough speed to stick in CF.  Scouts rate his speed at 60 and raw power at 65-70. Negatives include a weak sophomore campaign and relatively disappointing Cape Cod League performances.  On the other hand his breakout statistically appears to be real with a significantly improved K and BB ratios.  Right now, he's being mocked from #3 to #10 which is the Giants spot.  As always, how scouts of individual teams judge the hit tool will be key to his final draft position.

DrB's Updated 2019 Draft Board:

1.  Adley Rutschman, C, College(Oregon St).  Excellent catching prospect whose bat had a huge sophomore breakout which carried over to his junior season:  .433/.582/.793, 16 HR.  Moves ahead of Bobby Witt Jr.  I think you have to take the college bat at a premium position over the HS 5-tool player for #1 overall.

2.  Andrew Vaughn 1B, College(Cal).  Top college power bat in the draft.  Numbers guys like him better than the scouts.  Not quite as dominant at the plate as his Sophomore season, but has been pitched around a lot.  .374/.530/.712, 14 HR.  College bats are safest bets in the draft and there is really no evidence HS bats have higher ceilings, so I'll bump Vaughn up to #2 despite defensive/positional limitations.

3.  JJ Bleday OF, College(Vanderbilt).  Big athletic OF from an elite program.  Huge breakout junior season:  .343/.456/.747, 23 HR.  May not be a CF but the bat will play in a corner.  Bat has progressed enough to rank in top tier of college bats, which again are statistically the safest picks.

4.  Hunter Bishop OF, College(Arizona St.).  See profile above.  Only question about him is length of swing and K rate.

5.  Bobby Witt Jr. SS, HS.  5-tool athlete with MLB bloodline who can stick at SS.  Stock has not dropped so much as the college bats have really stepped up.

6.  CJ Abrams SS, HS.  4+ tool prospect with best wheels in the draft.  Power lags a bit.  Stock has not dropped during his senior season.

7.  Bryson Stott SS, College(UNLV).  Solid college bat who can stick at SS.  Solid junior season:  .369/.498/.636, 19 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 15 SB.  Multiple mocks have him going to the Giants at #10.  That would be OK since I rank him higher in this draft.

8.  Corbin Carroll OF, HS.  Undersized, speedy, athletic OF with a strong hit tool in the mold of Ellsbury and Benintendi.  Hit tool seems solid enough to take a chance on drafting him with a high pick.  Projects as CF.

9.  Kameron Misner OF, College(Missour).  Best all around tools among college draft prospects.  2019 offensive numbers a bit disappointing:  .290/.444/.497, 10 HR, 19 SB.  Giants have reportedly scouted him heavily.  Most boards have him falling clear out of first round.  I still believe in the athleticism.  If both Stott and Misner are there at #10, I'd definitely take Stott, but if all of 1-7 above are gone, Misner would be a respectable choice.

10.  Josh Jung 3B, College(Texas Tech).  Disciplined bat with power potential.  Very respectable junior numbers:  .355/.491/.634, 9 HR.

11.  Alek Manoah, RHP, College(West Virginia).  We haven't profiled him yet.  Huge RHP, 6'7", 270 lbs.  Very strong junior numbers:  7-3, 1.89, 90.2 IP, 22 BB, 121 K.  Giants have reportedly scouted him heavily.  I really want a college bat, but Manoah seems like a potential ace or future Closer so would be a worthy 10'th pick.  Best college pitcher in the draft in a down year for college pitching.

Comments:  Most boards have Nick Lodolo as the top college pitcher.  I'd prefer Manoah.  Most boards have HS OF/1B Riley Greene in the 10.  If he and Nick Lodolo are both top 10, they push some players down to the Giants increasing the probability of getting a top 10 worthy pick.  I guess I kind of have my heart set on Stott, but there is one scenario where Andrew Vaughn slides due to position issues.  If that happened, Giants should grab him.

Randy Norris makes his 2019 debut.  I missed Fabian Pena's 2019 debut.  He's already hit 2 HR's in his first 3 games.  Hopefully David Villar's HR's in both games of the DH will jumpstart his season after missing time with an injury.

A  Columbia Fireflies beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3:

Ismael Munguia LF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .316.

This was Jake Wong's 5'th consecutive QS, 6 innings each, 3 scoreless, 2 hitless, 23 K's, 7 BB's in 30
IP.  Diego Rincones is hitting .389 over his last 10 games.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants traded C Eric Kratz to the Tampa Bay Rays for a PTBNL or cash.  They sent cash to the Rays to pay Kratz salary, so it would seem logical to expect a player in return down the road, unless they are planning to just hand cash back and forth.  Aramis Garcia was optioned back to Sacramento which means Buster Posey is coming off the DL on schedule and will likely start the first game of the D'Backs series.

So much for stretching out Jesus Tona.

Game Wrap 5/15/2019: Giants 4 Blue Jays 3

Shaun Anderson overcame some shaky defensive support to pitch 5 solid innings in his MLB debut to lead the Giants to a win in the final game of a short homestand.  Key Lines:

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .208.  I wish I could day Crawford's bat is coming to life, but his BA is .192 over his last 7 games, .212 over his last 15 and .176 over his last 30.  Brutal!

Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .167.  Garcia now has 5 HR's in 72 career PA's.  That's 42/600.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 2 for 2, 2B.  BA= 1.000.  Apparently the kid can hit too.  He was channelling Zack Greinke more than Madison Bumgarner with two squared up balls that were hit hard.  Looking up his minor league batting stats, he hit just .129 in 2018, but 2 of his 4 hits were doubles.

Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 3.60.  Both hits and 1 BB came in the first inning when he may have still had some first-start jitters.  He had to pitch through 2 errors.  Regarding the GO/AO, he was credited with GO's on both errors and 2 lineouts to the OF were not counted as AO's, but 10 of his 15 recorded outs were either K's or GO's.

On video, he had a tight downward breaking slider to complement a 92-94 MPH FB.  And oh, he looks like an absolute horse on the mound.  He has enough of a resemblance to Noah Syndergaard, we might start calling him Thor Jr!  I'd say he earned himself another MLB Start.

Bullpen- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  Mark Melancon, Sam Dyson, Tony Watson and Will Smith pitched 1 shutout inning each.  Smith earned his 11'th Save by striking out the side.  Dyson, Watson and Smith should all have significant trade value if the Giants sell at the Trade Deadline.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants are 9 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West pending the outcome of the Dodgers vs Padres.  They are 5 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants have a travel day heading to Arizona for a weekend series against the D'Backs with Jeff Samardzija facing Merrill Kelly Friday evening.

AAA  El Paso Chihuahua's mauled the Sacramento River Cats 7-2:

Austin Slater 1B- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .303.
Ryan Howard 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .125.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .258.
Williams Jerez LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.83.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 4/0.  ERA= 3.00.

Someone commented yesterday about how impressed they are with the "talent" in Sacramento.  I am alway amazed at what straws folks will grasp when they are desperate to believe in something.  Here's a dose of reality about the "talent" in Sacramento.  Young Yaz is 28 yo and this is his 4'th season in AAA.  Gerber is 26 and in his 3'rd AAA season. He has MLB experience.  Henry Ramos is 27 yo and in his 4'th AAA season.  Austin Slater is 26 years old and in his 4'th AAA season and has MLB experience.  Let's not confuse minor league performance with "talent".  Do you know what they call a 26-28 yo player with multiple years of AAA and some MLB experience?  A AAAA player, that's what!  You take a bunch of those players, put them in an extreme hitter-friendly league, give them a juiced baseball and you're going to get some numbers.  Just don't be shocked if they do a faceplant when they get their next MLB opportunity.  Remember when Brian Sabean used to talk about trying to "catch lightning in a bottle?"  This is "catch lightening in a bottle" on steroids(pardon the term).  It's throwing a lot of darts hoping one of them hit's a bull's eye or throwing stuff at the wall hoping something sticks.  So far, we've had no bull's eyes and nothing sticking.

Caleb Baragar LHP- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.68.
Chase Johnson RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.30.

Matt Frisbee RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.79.

Matt Frisbee has pitched 12 consecutive scoreless frames with 11 K's and 1 BB.  The Giants released Ryan Kirby.

*********************************************************************************

A Augusta Greenjackets stung the Columbia Fireflies 3-2:

Frankie Tostado 1B- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .266.
Jeffry Parra C- 1 for 2, HR(2), BB.  BA= .177.

Jesus Ozoria RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.17.

Jeffry Parra hits his second HR in 2 days.

LG notes yesterday's Fangraphs Mock Draft 2.0 with the Giants taking SS Bryson Stott from UNLV.  They are also thought to be interested in OF Kameron Misner and RHP Alek Manoah.  The stars seem to be aligning for them to take Stott at #10 who I think would be the Best Player Available, which is not to disrespect Misner or Manoah who are good players too, but I think Stott is the clear cut BPA if he's there, which it seems increasingly likely he will.  OF Hunter Bishop has had a huge junior season in Arizona and is a late riser.  He could still be available and would be an interesting choice.
