Game Wrap 8/31/2026: Giants 7 Braves 3

The kids were alright for the Giants as several made major contributions to a nice win over the Braves in a one-game makeup series.  Key Lines:

Turner Hill PH/LF- 1 for 2, 2B, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .273.  In addition to auditioning younger players for potential roster spots next year, the rest of this season gives Tony Vitello a chance to show he can make good in-game baseball decisions.  In this situation he had Christian Koss bunt runners at first and second with no outs over to 2'nd and 3'rd with one out.  The Braves brought in a LHP to face Drew Gilbert.  Vitello countered with Turner Hill who is also a lefty batter but has a much more favorable split against LHP's.  Hill delivered with a loud double to the RF wall then scored himself on a 2-out single by Bryce Eldridge.  Gutsy, stats-based move that paid off.

Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 3, HR(30), 2 BB, R, RBI.  BA= .252.  Devers reaches the 30 HR milestone for the 5'th time in his career.  He has a serious shot to make it at least 35 for the third time.  His solo HR came with one out in the top of the first inning.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 5, RBI.  BA= .263.  Eldridge is 6 for 10 over his last two games, all singles.

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 5, HR(4), R, 2 RBI.  Cox is doing all sorts of good things.  He drove in the Giants second run of the game in the 5'th inning with a bunt single with 2 outs.  He then homered for an insurance run in the 9'th inning.  

Osleivis Basabe 3B/2B- 1 for 4, HR(4), R, RBI.  BA= .207.  Basabe has had his ups and downs since being called up but he homered to lead off the 6'th inning and to tie the game at 3 and start the 4-run rally that gave the Giants the lead they would maintain to the end.  

Andrew Knizner C(.222) and Nate Furman 2B(.158) had two hits each and each scored a run.

Anthony Molina RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.77.  Molina was better than this line as he hummed a 97 MPH fastball past Braves hitters with aplomb.  At one point he struck out 5 batters in a row.  He also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 5'th while allowing just one run in an inning that was prolonged by a misplay of a ground ball to Basabe at 3B. And Molina looked like he was having fun out there in the process.  

He was the much maligned player the Giants got back from the Braves in the Tyler Mahle trade but his performance over his past two appearances puts him in the discussion for a rotation spot next season and at worst he adds a high velocity arm which the Giants desperately need more of and can be used either in a SP or RP role.

Jason Foley RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.11.  Foley has a 2.45 ERA over his last 7 appearances.  He signed as a free agent but is arbitration eligible.  I predict the Giants will resign him before having to decide whether to tender a contract.  

Reiver Sanmartin LHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, 3/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.41.  After a rough start, Sanmartin has really turned it around and has not allowed an earned run in his last 8.2 IP over 7 appearances.  Change up is probably his best pitch but he has a nice sinker and slider to round out his pitch mix.

Dylan Smith RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.23.  Smith caused Dave Flemming some anxiety by allowing the first two batters to reach base but he got 2 outs on a 5-4 GIDP then struck out the final batter of the game on a computer-assisted called strike.

The Giants move on to their regularly scheduled series against the Pirates in Pittsburgh with Logan Webb RHP facing Paul "Dad Bod" Skenes RHP in the first game tomorrow evening.

Scott Bandura CF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .321.

Bo Davidson RF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(7), BB, SF.  BA= .290.

Will Brennan LF- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .312.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .286.

Zach Morgan C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .221.

Alex Carrillo RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 9.72.

Eric Cerantola RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 4.70.

Bo Davidson is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this fall so nothing to lose by adding him to the 40-man roster now.  We'll see if that happens when rosters expand to 28 on Sept 1.  It seems like the sooner he starts seeing MLB pitching the better.  

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Portland Sea Dogs 8-7(10 innings).

Trevor Cohen CF- 3 for 6, HR(3).  BA= .297.

Dayson Croes 3B- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(6).  BA= .270.

Lisbel Diaz RF- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .182.

Jose Astudillo LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .267.

Dakota Jordan DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .286.

Jacob Bresnahan LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.40.

Strong start by Bresnahan.....except for the walks.

Cam Maldonado DH-2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .333.

Kaeden Kent 2B- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .280.

Damian Bravo CF- 3 for 5, 2 2B, SB(4).  BA= .326.

Hayden Jatczak 3B- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .252.

Daniel Rogers C- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .224.

Hunter Dryden RHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.37.

Damian Bravo is a guy you don't hear much about but may be a real sleeper prospect.  He's quietly had a strong season across two levels.

Oliver Tejada LF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .214.

Keyner Martinez RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.87.

Cooper McGrath RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.71.

Fernando Vasquez RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 5.14.

Not much more to say about Josuar Gonzalez.  He's had a great season and is quite clearly the #1 prospect in the organization.

Down on the Farm: 8/29/2026

 AAA:  Reno Aces smashed the Sacramento River Cats 12-2.

Nothing to see here.  The River Cats are having a rough week against the Aces.  They seem like a depleted team, especially on the pitching side.

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs destroyed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 14-3.

Dakota Jordan CF/RF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .282.

Greg Farone LHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.43.

Squirrels also had a rough week, but good to see Dakota Jordan back in the lineup.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outscored the Everett Aquasox 12-9.

Hayden Jatczak 2B- 2 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .243.

Robert Hipwell DH- 3 for 3, 2B, 2 HR(8), 2 BB.  BA= .202.

Jose Ramos LF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(12).  BA= .299.

Alix Hernandez RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.51.

Alix Hernandez has quietly had a pretty good season.

A:  San Jose Giants whipped the Visalia Rawhide 11-5.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .356.

Lorenzo Meola DH- 3 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .274.

Junior Barajas C- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .264.

Tanner Mally CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(7).  BA= .400.

Leandro Rodriguez LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.96.

Game Wrap 8/29/2026: Giants 7 D'Backs 2

Starting pitcher Yunior Marte had an electric entrance into major league baseball and the Giants batters kept the line moving on Jeff Kent Day.  Key Lines:  

Jonah Cox CF- 1 for 1, BB, 3 SB(8), R.  BA= .276.  Cox showed what a lot of prospect watchers dreamed of him doing for a long time as he drew a walk to lead off the Giants half of the first inning, stole second base, stole third base and scored on Bryce Eldridge's single through the shortstop hole.  Cox started the game against a LHP and was later replaced by Drew Gilbert PH/CF who drew 3 walks and scored 3 runs.  Cox and Gilbert combined reached base 5 out of 5 PA's out of the leadoff spot in the lineup and scored 4 times.  In all, the lineup drew 6 walks leading to 5  of the Giants 7 runs.  

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 4 for 5, 4 RBI.  BA= .261.  Four singles, 4 RBI's.  Eldridge is starting to force his way into the conversation for NL ROY.  He may lose out to the WAR enthusiasts due to defensive limitations but the bat is right there by several important metrics.  

Rafael Devers DH added 2 singles and 2 RBI's as the top 3 batters in the lineup went a combined 7 for 11 with 4 walks reaching base 11 of 15 PA's.  They scored a combined 4 runs and drove in 6.  

Yunior Marte RHP- 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.93.  This young Yunior Marte looks a lot bigger and stronger than the old Yunior Marte.  He showed a loose arm and a live fastball he could put on the hands of lefthanded hitters and diving split change.  I am sure he made some fans in the Giants front office and made the YtY trade look more like a long term winner for the Giants.

The Giants get Sunday to travel to Atlanta for a 1-game make up game from an early season rainout on Monday with TBD facing TBD.

Game Wrap 8/29/2026: D'Backs 7 Giants 1(Game 1 of Day/Night Doubleheader)

Matt "I Refuse To Call Him 'Tugboat'" Wilkinson pitched six scoreless innings only to lose control of the strike zone to open the 7'th inning with another massive bullpen failure sinking his effort.  Key Lines:

Matt Wilkinson LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.63.  Wilkinson's fastball barely touched 91 MPH but hitters seem to have some trouble picking it up and he is able to locate it consistently which sets up his other pitches, a sweeper/slider and changeup.  He seemed to run out of gas in the 7'th inning and walked the first two batters, the first walks he gave up in the game.  Unfortunately those two walks gave him an L for the game.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K, HR.  ERA= 6.97.  Walker relieved Wilkinson after the two walks to open the 7'th inning.  I had my doubts about bringing him into that situation.  He got a groundball out, which put runners at first and third with one out and kept the possibility of a GIDP in play, but the next batter walked to load the bases.  D'Backs Manager Tory Lovullo sent up LH batter Lars Nootbaar to hit for Jose Fernandez.  As soon as I saw that Walker was going to have to pitch to Nootbaar with the bases loaded, I knew exactly where that ball was going.  BTW, is retrieving a baseball worth falling into the waters of McCovey Cove?  If it's off the bat of an opposing player which I believe does not count as a Splash Hit?  

I am not sure how many more chances Walker is going to get with the Giants.  It should be none.  At the same time, from a human perspective you must feel for poor Ryan Walker who must be absolutely crushed.

Darien Smith RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 3/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.

Wilkin Ramos RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.39.

Alex Carrillo RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 12.79.

River Cats managed just 4 hits in the game.  Aeverson Arteaga SS and Charlie Szykowny 1B each had a double.

Dayson Croes 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .266.

A:  Visalia Rawhide outscored the San Jose Giants 9-6.

Josuar Gonzalez SS- 1 for 4, 3B, BB, SB(10).  BA= .354.

Dario Reynoso 3B- 2 for 3, BB, SB(19).  BA= .279.

Tanner Mally CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(6).  BA= .403.

Jordan Gottesman LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.96.

Game Wrap 8/28/2026: D'Backs 10 Giants 6

A few bright spots in the lineup were not enough to overcome terrible pitching as the D'Backs as the bullpen once again failed to keep a winnable game within reach.  Key Lines:

Bryce Eldridge DH- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(15), R. 2 RBI.  BA= .254.  The most significant part of this line is Eldridge did his damage against a LHP.  More than that, Eldridge and Devers batting 2, 3 in the lineup against a LHP and accounted for 3 of the Giants 6 runs.  

Christian Koss SS- 1 for 3, HR(1), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .211.  Koss is batting .238 over his last 7 games and .271 over his last 15.  In a small sample he has far better defensive metrics at SS than Willy Adames.  BTW, Adames got a PRP injection in his elbow so is likely done for the season giving Christian a chance to impress the rest of the way.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, 2/6 GO/AO, 3 HR.  ERA= 4.54.  There was a light breeze out to CF at game time.  How much that contributed to Tidwell's downfall is not clear.  The D'Backs were able to hit the ball in the air and he couldn't keep them in the park.  Although there are exceptions to the rule, if a pitcher gives up a lot of flyballs, some of them are going to find their way over the wall.  A ground ball has essentially zero chance of being a home run.

Spencer Bivens RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 14.40.  Bivens pitched fairly well in a variable role for AAA Sacramento but giving up 8 runs in 3 IP over his last to games at the MLB level is not going to cut it, even in audition time.

The Giants play a day/night doubleheader today with TBD starting both games.  Matt Williamson LHP will likely be activated for one of the games.  Merrill Kelly RHP(5.35) and Mitch Bratt LHP(4.54) are the named starters for the D'Backs.

AAA:  Reno Aces shut out the Sacramento River Cats 5-0.

 Joe Whitman LHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.66.

Quality Start for Whitman.  Will Brennan(.318), Diego Velasquez(.254) and Eddys Leonard(.229) had 2 hits each with a double for Velasquez.  

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs mauled the Richmond Flying Squirrels 11-2.  

Trevor Cohen CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .285.

Jack Payton 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .282.

A+:  Everett Aquasox outscored the Eugene Emeralds 12-10.

Damian Bravo CF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .355.

Cam Maldonado RF- 3 for 4, 3 HR(7), SF.  BA= .333.

Kaeden Kent SS= 4 for 5, 2B, 2 HR(2), SB(1).  BA= .400.

A smashing pro debut for Jeff Kent's son whose mugshot looks like he could be a clone.  And Cam Maldonado is looking more and more like a serious prospect.  

A:  San Jose Giants crushed the Visalia Rawhide 13-4.

Tanner Mally CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(5).  BA= .390.

Junior Barajas C- 3 for 5, 3 2B.  BA= .258.

Dario Reynoso 3B- 3 for 4, 3B, HR(15), BB.  BA= .276.

Angel Guzman 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .255.

Broedy Poppell RF- 2 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .250.

Ben Bybee RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.91.

Dario Reynoso is a wiry-strong prospect with a solid stat line showing power, speed(18 SB's) and plate discipline(15% walk rate) except for a 32% K rate.  

Game Wrap 8/27/2026: Giants 6 D'Backs 1

 The Giants scored 4 runs in the 8'th inning to break open a tight game and this time the bullpen held on in the 9'th for the win.  Key Lines:

Drew Gilbert RF- 1 for 3, HR(8), SF, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .243.  Gilbert barely missed a home run to the deepest part of Triples Alley on Wednesday.  He hit one to the same spot leading off the Giants half of the first inning but this time it carried over the top of the wall for a home run.  He added an RBI on a sac fly later in the game.  Gilbert is on a tear batting .333 over his last 7 games and with 5 RBI's in his last 2 games.  I think it's safe to say he is the odds on favorite to be at least a strong side platoon partner, probably in CF next season.  

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 3, BB, SB(5), R, RBI.  BA= .278.  Tony Vitello has made some inneresting choices for his cleanup hitters lately but hey!  Maybe "small ball" works in the middle of the lineup?  Although it did no figure in the scoring Cox did what Giants prospect watchers dreamed of by laying down a bunt single then stealing 2B.  He was also part of the 9'th inning rally using his speed to score on a safety squeeze.

Bryce Eldridge RF- 1 for 4, 2B, R, RBI.  BA= .252.  Eldridge had a slow start to the game coming off the bereavement list but his RBI double was the key hit of the 9'th inning rally.

Landen Roupp RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.25.  It wasn't overpowering but Roupp hung in there to hold the D'Backs down for 5 innings. this time bullpen took care of the rest.  

Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.50.  Kruk pointed out that Harris has a straight over-the-top delivery which allows him to work up in the zone with a 4-seam fastball and tunnel a downer curveball.  That's a classic pitch combo we don't see too often these days but it has a long history of effectiveness.  Note the game summary calls the fastballs sinkers and cutters but most of them were up in the zone which makes me think they are actually 4-seamers.  

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.60.  There was some uneasiness when Walker allowed hits to the first two batters, the second of which whistled past his ear at 104.5 MPH but he settled down to get the last 3 batters and keep the final score 6-1.

Blade Tidwell RHP takes the mound tonight facing Kohl Drake LHP who comes in with an ERA of 5.40.

The game was tied at 0 after 9 innings.  The two teams traded runs in the 10'th and 12'th inning before the Sea Dogs scored 3 in the top of the 13'th and the Squirrels fall short with 2 in the bottom of the 13'th.

Cam Maldonado RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .300.

Alix Hernandez RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.92.

Maldonado had the only multi-hit game for the Squirrels. Jhonny Level, Damian Bravo and Dalton Wentz each hit doubles.

Game Wrap 8/26/2026: Reds 10 Giants 9

 The Giants set a franchise today, yes I said FRANCHISE, record.......and that is not a good thing.  In season of late-inning failures, blowing a 6-run lead in the 9'th inning turned out to be not only the biggest failure of the season but in the entire history of the franchise, and yes, that includes the New York era.  Key Lines:

Jonah Cox CF- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB, 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .255.  Cox drove in the Giants first runs of the gamew with a homer in the second inning.  After an 8 consecutive strikeout run over 3 games, Cox bounced back nicely to go 3 for 8 with 2 HR's over his last 3 games.  He looks like at worst he could be the right side of a CF platoon with Drew Gilbert.  

Drew Gilbert PH/CF- 1 for 1, 2B, 3 RBI.  BA= .242.  Speaking of Drew Gilbert, it sure looked like he put the game away with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double in the 8'th inning making the score 9-3.

Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 4, HR(29), BB, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .246.  Devers HR in the 5'th gave the Giants a 4-2 lead.  After a rough series in Boston, he went 5 for 11 with a HR in each game of this series.  Devers really turned his season around in the second half.  The finger-wagging incident and subsequent apparent make up with Manager Tony Vitello seemed to be a turning point.

Turner Hill LF- 3 for 4, 2B, R.  BA= .318.  Hill is making good on the promise of the number he put up in the minors this season and putting himself in the conversation for a spot on next season's team.

Shay Whitcomb 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3), 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .147.  Shay Whitcomb sure weares a baseball uniform well but has struggled at the plate since his call up.  He broke out today with a double and HR.  The double preceded Jonah Cox's HR in the second inning and the 2-run HR in the 6'th inning increased the Giants lead to 6-2.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  Not sure why Landen Roupp's start was pushed back and Webb's moved up.  There is absolutely no reason to push Webb this season.  In fact, I would consider shutting him down and he is critical to any hope of a Giants turnaround for next season.  At least he is apparently healthy and threw another Quality Start.  

Spencer Bivens RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 12.00.  Bivens allowed a leadoff baserunner in the 8'th but then got the last two batters of the inning on strikeouts.  He has experience pitching multiple innings so I can't criticize sending him back out there for the 9'th although the bottom of the 8'th was a very long inning to sit through.  The top of the 9'th started HR, single, WP, walk, WP, walk.  That's when sub-manager Jayce Tingler went out and brought in Dylan Smith RHP.  Was there a point prior to that which was a better time to replace Bivens?  Given the Giants lead I can't really say so.  I will say that the first batter Smith faced, Eugenio Suarez, might be the absolute most dangerous hitter on the planet in that situation.  That man hunts pitches to send over the fence and that's exactly what he did and with the bases-loaded. Suddenly the score was 9-8 and the rest of the story was so predictable we all knew before it happened.  What a crusher!  

There is no rest for the weary as the D'Backs come in for a 4-game series over the weekend including an odd doublheader on Saturday.  Anyone know why that is?  Anyway, Landen Roupp RHP tries to shake it off tomorrow evening facing Jose Cabrera RHP who comes in with a 5.60 ERA.

Game Wrap 8/25/2026: Giants 3 Reds 1

For the second game in a row, a promising start by a Giants pitcher ending with a team win was marred by serious injury casting a shadow on the 2027 season.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 3, HR(28), BB, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .244.  Devers homers in back-to-back games and will not only hit 30 HR's this season but possibly 35 or more.  This one bounced off the top of the arcade in straightaway RF and into the Bay.

Drew Cavanaugh C- 3 for 3, BB, 2 RBI.  BA= .253.  Drew Cavanaugh now has 23 MLB hits, 22 of them singles with one double.  That, along with a 12.7% walk rate produces a better wOBA and wRC+ than Patrick Bailey's so far this season.

Adrian Houser RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.02.  Much like Carson Whisenhunt in the previous game, Houser looked really good before suffering an apparent arm injury.  Manager Tony Vitello said it was a forearm strain.  He is headed for an MRI.  Given that we already know Whisenhunt is advised to have surgery and will likely miss all of 2027 as will Trevor McDonald, the Giants pitching depth for 2027 is dwindling rapidly.

My other thought is the Giants had an enviable track record of pitchers not requiring arm surgery for many years and now all of a sudden with a new coaching regime, we're seeing a whole outbreak of them.  Coincidence?

Anthony Molina RHP- 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.89.  Molina gave up some hard-hit balls but threw hard and ate innings and a well-deserved credit for the Win.

Landen Roupp RHP tries for the sweeeep today facing Nick Lodolo LHP who comes in with a 6.04 ERA.

Game Wrap 8/24/2026: Giants 5 Reds 0

This game appeared to be a mismatch on paper and not in the Giants favor, but Drew Gilbert and Rafael Devers led an early attack on a heretofore dominant SP and the bullpen picked up an injured Carson Whisenhunt for a wire-to-wire shutout win.  Key Lines:

Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 R.  BA= .239.  Gilbert's first double leading off the bottom of the first inning would have been a home run in any other ballpark but bounced into the seats near the apex of Triples Alley for a ground rule double.  Gilbert was around 2B on on his way to third when he saw it go into the stands.  Despite the 2 hits, Gilbert is batting just .200 over his last 7 games.

Rafael Devers 1B- 2 for 4, HR(27), 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .243.  Devers followed Gilbert's doubles with a single and a 3-run home run.  He also scored on Turner Hill LF's first inning double, the 4'th consecutive hit off Chase Burns RHP.  Jung Hoo Lee DH was thrown out trying to give Hill 2 RBI's on the hit.  Despite his 2 hits, Devers is also batting just .200 over his last 7 games.

Christian Koss SS- 2 for 4, R.  BA= .214.  It looks like Christian Koss is now the starting SS, at least until Willy Adames gets back from the IL.  Koss has shown repeatedly the ablility to find traction when he gets regular plate appearances.  He is batting .273 over his last 7 games and .269 over his last 15.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.49.  Whisenhunt looked like he was pitching a nice bounceback game until he came up holding his arm at an odd angle and shaking his hand like he had a stinger or his hand was numb.  He did not throw another pitch and later was reported to have left with elbow pain.  Not good!  

Jason Foley RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.46.  Foley was the first reliever to stand in the gap for Whiz and looked dominant with 3 K's out of 4 batters faced.  

Ryan Walker RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.99.  He's baaaack!  Walker looks like he's bulked up a little and looked more like his old self that originally won the Closer role.  Let's see if he can keep it up.  

Carson Seymour RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.96.  Seymour has a 1.50 ERA in 12 IP over his last 7 appearances.

Adrian Houser RHP is listed as the SP for the Giants this evening facing Brady Singer RHP who comes in with a 4.72 ERA.

Game Wrap 8/23/2026: Red Sox 5 Giants 4

Matt Wilkinson's honeymoon phase as a rookie in Major League Baseball did not last long as he was cuffed around for 4 runs and didn't make it out of the 4'th inning.  The Giants resulting loss was compounded by two injuries of undetermined seriousness.  Key Lines:

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, R.  BA= .230.  The Giants jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with Adames scoring the second run from 2B on a groundball single to LF by Victor Bericoto LF.  Adames appeared to injury himself on the slide into home and was later removed after appearing to be in pain again after striking out in the 5'th inning.  He will undergo an MRI on his left elbow.  Bericoto later appeared to hurt his knee after a fan interference call on a foul ball he was trying to catch along the 3B line seats.  He will undergo an MRI too.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, RBI.  BA= .252.  Eldridge drove in the Giants first run of the game in the first inning with a line drive single to RF.  

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4, HR(2), R, RBI.  BA= .255.  Cox broke out of a strikeout streak with a HR off a major league pitcher(his first MLB HR came off a position player who was pitching late in a game) to lead off the 2'nd inning.  

Matt Wilkinson LHP- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.35.  Wilkinson's FB is nothing to write home about at best and by the 4'th inning he was struggling to break 89 MPH with it.  You are not going to have long term success in today's MLB with a sub-90 MPH FB.  

The Giants limp home beat up in more ways than one and must get back after it tomorrow evening against The Reds and Chase Burns RHP who comes in with a 14-2 record and a 1.51 ERA.  The Giants SP is TBD.

Game Wrap 8/22/2026: Red Sox 3 Giants 2

Another bullpen failure in the 9'th inning ruined an excellent bounce back start by Blade Tidwell.  Key Lines:

The Giants run output consisted of solo HR's by Willy Adames SS(21) and Andrew Knizner C(1) in the first and third innings respectively.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.58.  Tidwell follows up his worst appearance with his best which seems like a good predictor of future success.  He has now made 3 good starts out of 4.  Since the #1 goal of the remainder of this season is finding pieces for next year's rotation, that's the big takeaway from this game.  The loss itself is almost a non-factor.  

Dylan Smith RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.96.  The line does not do Smith justice.  He entered the game in the 8'th inning with no outs and runners at first and second.  He allowed a soft single that loaded the bases but then went K, K fly out to maintain the shut out.  He walked the leadoff batter in the 9'th and was replaced by Sam Hentges LHP who went HBP, force out(2B), LD single, LD double, IBB to tie the score.  The next batter grounded one to Bryce Eldridge 1B who threw home for the force out except the throw pulled Knizner's foot off home plate and the walk-off run scored.  I understand patience is a virtue for a manager but I'm in line with Baseballjeff1 on Bluesky who said it's past time to try a different reliever in situations where inherited runners are involved(paraphrase).  

Matt Wilkinson LHP gets the start in the series finale facing Jake Bennett LHP who comes in with a 3.46 ERA.  Is Wilkinson going out there as a SP or an Opener for Adrian Houser?  I think it's too soon for Houser's turn in the rotation.

Not sure exactly how this pool play works in the DSL postseason but based on last season I would say losing a game probably all but eliminates Giants Orange.

Game Wrap 8/21/2026: Red Sox 6 Giants 4

Logan Webb's night fell apart in front of our eyes in the third inning as the Red Sox put up a 5-spot and a Giants comeback fell short.  Key Lines:

Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 3, HR(7).  BA= .241.  Gilbert singled to lead off the game then followed Christian Koss 3B 2-out double in the 4'th inning with a HR.  Rafael Devers DH followed Gilbert with his 26'th HR to cut the Red Sox lead to 5-4.  The Giants never got closer than that the rest of the night.  Gilbert's hits came against Sonny Gray RHP.  He was replaced by Jonah Cox PH/CF to face a parade of LHP's.  Cox struck out twice and now has 8 K's in a row over his last 3 games.  It's a small sample but 8 K's in a row is a lot.

Logan Webb RHP- 2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, 2 HBP, 3/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.75.  Webb allowed 3 baserunners in the first two innings so he was not exactly sharp from the beginning.  still, I wasn't too worried when Willson Contreras came up in with 2 on and 2 out in the third inning.  I did think Wilyer Abreu's single just ahead of Contreras looked awfully fat, like a batting practice pitch.  Then Contreras absolutely unloaded on a changeup at the bottom of the strike zone but center-cut.  It might still be in the air out there somewhere in Boston, 116 MPH, estimated distance 452 ft.  What followed was single, single, HBP, walk, HBP and Webb's night was done.  

My two thoughts as I watched this unfold was either he's tipping his pitches or hurt.  He did throw one fastball at almost 94 MPH but was sitting just 90-91 by the second HBP the command was non-existent so I am a bit worried about an injury.  In his postgame comments, Sergio Romo made the point that Webb threw a lot of changeups to RH batters with movement  into the batter rather than away and appeared to be overthrowing in the latter part of the inning.  No matter the cause, it was an ugly scene.  I felt bad for Webby.

Game Wrap 8/20/2026: Guardians 5 Giants 2

Willy Adames 2-run homer was not enough to overcome defensive miscues and bad BABIP juju for Landen Roupp low-energy day game loss.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB, R.  BA= .244.  Devers singled to start the 4'th inning and Adames followed with a HR.  That was it for the Giants lineup output.  They managed just 3 other hits in the game.

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(20), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .229.  Adames still has a shot at another 30 HR season but continues to struggle on defense.  For the second game in a row he had what looked like a routine groundout hit off the heel of his glove and pop straight up in the air.  This one came in the first inning with Roupp already reeling from some seriously bad BABIP luck and led to critical third run by the Guardians in the inning.

Later in the game, a dropped ball in a rundown by Osleivis Basabe 2B, who has also had a case of The Bobbles, led to a second unearned run.  

Landen Roupp RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K's, 7/4 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.34.  Roupp's first inning went Walk, GB single, bloop fly single, SF, Fielder's Choice error(Adames), pop out, line drive single, K.  Based on probabilities, he should have gotten out of the inning with no more than 1 run scored.

The Giants move on to Boston for a weekend series against the Red Sox with Logan Webb RHP starting tomorrow evening against Sonny Gray RHP who comes in with a ERA of 2.65.

The Giants lineup already leans fairly heavily left.  The top two OF prospects at the AAA level, Scott Bandura and Bo Davidson both bat left.  Anthony Molina came over from the Braves in the Tyler Mahle trade.  He is on the 40-man roster so could get some looks at the MLB level this season.

Game Wrap 8/19/2026: Giants 1 Guardians 0

Excellent team pitching and a hustling double by Rafael Devers led to a narrow win for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .244.  I've been as critical of Devers as anyone this season but credit where it's due.  Ever since the finger-wagging incident, he cleaned up his game, mostly hustled and actually looked like he's having fun out there.  His 4'th inning double was a deep liner to CF but one that looked like a long single but Devers busted it out of the box and when it briefly got away from the fielder, he stretched it into a double and scored the Giants only run on a single by Victor Bericoto LF.

Willy Adames SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .229.  Adames was back in the lineup for the first time in week.  He looked much better at the plate but had a ball kick off his glove straight up in the air for his 17'th error which put runners on first and second with 2 outs in the 7'th inning.  As a fan watching, you couldn't help but think "uh-oh, here we go", but Adrian Houser got the final out of the inning on a pop up to preserve the shutout.  

Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  The Giants braintrust decided to make Wilkinson's MLB debut a lefty opener assignment with Adrian Houser doing the bulk-innings.  Hey!  It worked!  Wilkinson's FB topped out at 91 MPH but he delivers it at a similar angle as another lefty named Kyle Harrison and induced 2 flyouts and 3 pop ups against a single ground out in 2 innings of work.  

Adrian Houser RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.08.  Since moving to the bullpen on June 26, Houser has the second best ERA in MLB(40 IP min.).  He did make one start on August 12 and pitched 6 shutout innings, but the Giants have brought him in after on Opener several times with success.  This one made sense because of the 7 batters Wilkinson faced, 4 batted left and 3 were switch-hitters.  The first batter Houser faced batted R.  So, Houser seems to have put himself in position to be either a SP or bulk-innings man next season. Either way, he fills 1/5 of a pitching rotation.  

Dylan Smith RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 2.73.  Smith entered the game in the 8'th inning after Houser allowed a leadoff walk to Steven Kwan and promptly threw a wild pitch, but then struck out the side with a riding 96 MPH FB that Guardians batters swung under and an occasional split or sweeper.  Dave Flemming mentioned that the FB velocity dipped by a tick or two to the last two batters of the 9'th but Smith struck both of them out for a very nice 2-out Save.  Is he now the presumptive Closer for next season?

Landen Roupp tries to get his season back on track in a day start today facing Gavin Williams RHP who comes in with a 3.74 ERA.  And I'll just say the Giants don't need an ace starter for next season, but they do need at least two pitchers like Gavin Williams.

Game Wrap 8/18/2026: Guardians 8 Giants 1

Carson Whisenhunt was lit up for a huge 3-run home run by Jo Adell in the first inning and the game was basically over at that point except for the pummeling.  Key Lines:

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.  Cox is back up and continues to get on base and show range in CF.  He did get picked off and CS to negate the two hits.  Hopefully the coaches can give him some pointers on reading MLB pitchers, especially LHP's.  

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, HR(14), R, RBI.  BA= .250.  Eldridge drove in the Giants only run with a home run of his own in the 2'nd inning, off a LHP to boot.  Everything about him reminds me so much of Brandon Belt, I sometimes have to double-check myself to make sure it's not Belt out there.  I already see an ability to handle inside pitches that I never saw in Belt so I am optimistic Bryce will end up as a much better hitter.  

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 4 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 3/5 GO/AO.  ERA= 7.03.  I don't know if he was tipping pitches but he was not fooling the Guardians batters, especially Jo Adell who torched him for 3 hits and 6 RBI's.  The first 3 batters in the Guardians lineup all reached base 3 times.  Right now The Whiz is not looking like a pitcher to count on for next season.  

Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.71.  After giving up 4 runs in his first 1.2 IP, Harris combined line for his last 2 games is 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  

Reiver Sanmartin LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.45.  Sanmartin allowed the first 3 batters he faced to reach base.  He settled down after that and should have been out of the 7'th inning but Bryce Eldridge inexplicably dropped a relay throw from Osleivis Basabe that was off the ground.  Sanmartin has a nice pitch mix which looks more like a starter's mix than a relievers to my eye.

Note that all three Giants pitchers who appeared in the game finished the day with ERA's over 7.

Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson LHP brings his soft-tossing, "invisiball" for a major league tryout tonight facing Parker Messick LHP who comes in with a 2.59 ERA.  And that sure seems like a lot of quotation marks in The Tugboat's game.

The exciting news here is Joniel Hernandez hits his second HR in as many days.  He is the 17 yo shortstop prospect who came over from the Padres in the Robbie Ray trade.  I think it's is possible Hernandez ends up being the best return out of the Giants 2026 trade deadline deals.

Game Wrap 8/16/2026: Rockies 13 Giants 7

The Giants managed to keep pace in a hit fest until the 6'th inning when another bullpen collapse gave the Rockies 7 runs in next two innings and a runaway loss.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 5, 2B(30), HR(25), 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .246.  Devers hit one into water that was just foul in the second inning then straightened it out and found the water again 2 pitches later for a splash hit home run, the 110'th in history.  Drew Gilbert scored on the home run.  Here are some splits on Devers who has been quite consistent:

Last 7 games:  .231/.333/462, HR.

Last 15 games:  .226/.328/.453, 3 HR.

Last 30 games:  .220/.317/.431, 6 HR.

May:  .306/.356/.593, 5 HR.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB, R, RBI.  BA= .247.  Eldridge drove in the Giants first run with soft single to CF.  

Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 5.  BA= .250.  Cavanaugh has been swinging at pitches in the zone and taking pitches out of the zone.  In other words, he makes good swing decisions.  He lost a ball in the dirt allowing a run in the pivotal 6'th inning.  The next 4 batters went walk, walk, HBP single(misplay).  

Turner Hill CF- 1 for 3, BB, R, RBI.  BA= .167.  Hill gets his first MLB hit and RBI but misplayed a ball in CF to contribute to the "sloppy" play in the 6'th.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 5 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.33.  I caught the Tony Vitello Show on KNBR while driving down the 5.  He said this game was an opportunity for Tidwell to sustain and build on his success and to show he can handle a lineup stacked with lefthanded batters. Welp!   That didn't go well!  He walked 5 batters and gave up a home run to the 9'th hitter, a guy with a .180 career BA and just 1 prior home run in 149 AB.

Bullpen- 4 relievers gave up runs including 3 who gave up 2 runs each.  I think it's safe to say a full bullpen rebuild is Buster's top priority this offseason.

The Giants get a travel day before starting a series against the Guardians in Cleveland with Carson Whisenhunt LHP facing Foster Griffin LHP who comes in with a record of 13-4 and an ERA of 3.25.

Moises Soto LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.

Game Wrap 8/11/2026: Giants 4 Astros 1

Carson Whisenhunt overcame early inning command issues to limit the Astros to a run over 5.2 IP and the lineup chipped away at Astros starter Hunter Brown RHP with enough runs for a win.  Key Lines:

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 4, HR(12), R, RBI.  BA= .248.  Eldridge drove one over the L-CF wall for the Giants 3'rd run of the game and give Whiz some breathing room.  

Drew Gilbert CF- 1 for 3, BB, R, RBI.  BA= .238.  Gilbert drove in the Giants first run with a single.  He then drew a walk on a very close 3-2 pitch which the Astros catcher challenged but the ball was confirmed.  He then advanced to 2B on a groundout and scored on a singled by Drew Cavanaugh.  I thought Gilbert was the one who challenged a strike and texted my friend that it was a high leverage challenge buy Gilbert but it was the Astros catcher how challenged a ball call and lost.  Still a high-leverage challenge.  

Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 4, SB(1), R, RBI.  BA= .242.  Cavanaugh singled in the 6'th with 2 outs.  Christian Koss got both cheeks into one and hit a laser beam over the head of the LF for a double that drove in Cavanaugh from 1B with Koss advancing to 3B on a throwing error.  That was the Giants 4'th run of the game.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.11.  Whisenhunt loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and no outs in the second.  I think he threw over 50 pitches in the two innings but allowed just 1 run.  After that he settled down and was excellent over the next 2.2 IP.  Hopefully a learning/growing experience.  

Carson Seymour RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.36.  Per Kruk, Seymour missed badly with his slider to the first couple of batters he faced with Kruk saying, "no bueno."  He settled down to pitch a couple of very needed scoreless innings.

The Giants try for a series win tomorrow afternoon with TBD facing Bryan King LHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.83.  It looks like this is his first start so he might be an Opener.  

Game Wrap 8/10/2026: Astros 6 Giants 3(10 innings)

The Giants were one strike away from winning this one.  The crowd was on it's feet cheering. If you closed your eyes you might have even thought it was a playoff game.  The fans were definitely doing their part.  Then a wild pitch advanced a runner to second base.  Then a groundball ticked off the glove of Osleivis Basabe 2B and into right field and that runner on second base came around to score.  Tie game, extra innings.  We all knew how that was going to turn out.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 5, HR(9).  BA= .300.  The reason why the Giants were one strike away from a win is because Jung Hoo Lee homered down the RF line coming this close to a splash hit.

Drew Gilbert CF- 1 for 3, HR(5), SF.  BA= .237.  The other reason why the Giants were one strike away from a win is because Drew Gilbert drove in the Giants first 2 runs and the home run was no cheapie.  It went into the arcade in R-CF, probably the hardest place in the ballpark to hit one.  He's hitting just .211 over his last 7 games but .297 over his last 15.

Blade Tidwell RHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.78.  Tidwell found another tick on the fastball and paired that up with a sweeper that brought back memories of Sergio Romo.  Tidwell looks like a keeper for next season.  

The Giants try to square the series tomorrow evening with TBD facing Hunter Brown RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.53.

Remember the foul ball Daniel Susac took off his left knee and how much pain he appeared to be in?  Remember how he stayed in the game and even got back in the squaaat behind home plate?  It was a fractured patella!  Owwweeeee!!!  Yikes!  The Giants are running out of catchers to call up but Zach Morgan got the call for now.

DSL:  Cubs Red shut out Giants Orange 3-0.

Abraham Utrera RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.45.

DSL:  Giants Black edged out Arizona Red 2-1.

Djean Macares CF- 2 for 3, SF, SB(23).  BA= .287.

Diego Alambarrio C- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .271.

Randry De Leon RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.28.

Brayan Cabello RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.34.

Randry De Leon once seemed like a promising prospect with great size at 6' 4", 200 lbs but he's kicked around the DSL for 4 seasons now.  He got off to a terrible start this season but over his last 6 Starts he has a 2.92 ERA.

Turner Hill CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .349.

Scott Bandura DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .299.

Parks Harber 3B- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .337.

Aeverson Arteaga SS- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .219.

Cesar Perdomo LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 7.33.

AA:  Reading Fightin' Phils topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-5.

Trevor Cohen CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .326.

Gavin Kilen SS- 2 for 5.  BA= .329.

Charlie Szykowny 1B- 4 for 5.  BA= .253.

Jancel Villaroel C- 2 for 5.  BA= .200.

Maui Ahuna 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .225.

Jose Astudillo LF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .462.

Gavin Kilen has an 8 game hit streak, batting .393 in August so far.

A:  Stockton Ports beat the San Jose Giants by a touchdown, 14-7.

Josuar Gonzalez DH- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .357.

Broedy Poppell RF- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .226.

Hayden Wynja LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.69.

Josuar Gonzalez is batting .400 in August so far raising his BA from .294 to .357.

DSL:  Idle as usual on Sundays.

Game Wrap 8/9/2026: Tigers 3 Giants 1(10 innings)

 The Giants failed to convert several scoring opportunities and the bullpen couldn't deal with inherited runners in the extra-innings as they followed a now-familiar formula to another loss.  Key Lines:

Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 4, 3B, RBI.  BA= .240.  Gilbert's 2-out triple in the second inning was the Giants only base-hit.  He was stranded at 3B.  The Giants had a first and third, no outs situation in the 4'th inning and came up empty.  Later they had a bases-loaded, 1-out situation in the 8'th and didn't score.  Gilbert drove in the only run with a single in the 7'th inning.  

Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, 12/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.59.  Webb was masterful pitching to groundball contact and preserving his pitch count getting through 8 innings on 100 pitches.  Dylan Smith RHP struck out the side in the 9'th inning but then Sam Hentges LHP allowed the inherited runner to score and on an inside-out single to RF by a RH-hitting PH and then allowed in an insurance run to score off the bats of LH batters.  

Blade Tidwell RHP tries to start the next series against the Astros with a win this evening facing Hayden Wesneski RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.86.
