Down on the Farm: 05-17-2010

AAA Game 1 Fresno Grizzlies topped the Oklahoma City Redhawks 3-2:

Really nothing of note of offense.
Kevin Pucetas- 6.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.22.

DH's in the minors are 7 innings each.

AAA Game 2 Grizzlies bested the Redhawks 1-0, and MadBum is back!!

Again, nothing to see on offense.
Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 3.64.

Oh man! Is this good to see or what? Bumgarner has kept getting stronger as the season has progressed and this looks like his lines from Augusta and San Jose days, doesn't it? The Grizzlies got their 1 run on only 2 hits off 4 Oklahoma City pitchers.

AA Eastern League was idle last night.

High A San Jose Giants beat the Bakersfield Blaze 5-3:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .293.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .392.
Drew Biery- 1 for 3, 3B, BB, SB(1). BA= .275.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 4. BA= .237.
Craig Westcott- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.30.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(6). ERA= 6.35.

Not much to comment on here. I still think it's a mistake to use Stoffel as a closer at this point in his career. The point of playing in the minors is to help him become a better pitcher. I think that's tough to do when you are the closer. You don't want to be working on stuff when you are trying to close out a game. You don't want to throw your second best pitch in close games. I say use him in 2-3 inning stints or else start him.

Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-0.

Ryan Cavan- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .287.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 3, BB, SB(7). BA= .272.
Jeremy Toole- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 1.93.
Brian Irving- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.74.
Chris Gloor- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.70.

Not sure how it happened, but Dominguez' SB was of home. Kind of a fluky line from Toole. Gloor has been a Jack of All Trades and a good one at that.

The big news tonight has to be Madison Bumgarner and his sparkling line for Fresno.

  1. I think it was kind of dumb of them to have Posey play catcher in the first game and to play first for the second game when Bumgarner was pitching. Those two may as well get as familiar as possible with each other.

Though, of course, my guess is that the G-men end up trading Bumgarner for a bat later in the year.

  3. Mentions that he's learned a cutter...this is the beauty of minor league ball. You have less pressure to try things out there!

  4. as aaa pitching sux, according to brian sabean, freddy is a good 6 months away from returning to the big club, as he is now batting 222 in aaa

and it appears that madbaums probs were a combination of mechanical and mental

  5. I would be very surprised if the Giants traded Bumgarner unless he reverts back to low velocity/low K's. Then I actually wouldn't mind if they got something other than a half-year rental in return. While it might be a good idea to have Posey catch the game Bumgarner pitched, I would say that is somewhere around #117 on the list of things to be concerned about.

It appears from his pitching lines that Bumgarner has made some changes in his repertoire. The increased GB rates strongly suggest that he's added a two seamer, unless the cutter also has some sink to it.

    Bacci,

Yesterday you were railing that they were rushing Fred Sanchez up too soon. Today you're making jokes about them leaving him down there all season. That's the kind of stuff that finally drove me away from the sfgiants.com message board.

  6. Great to see with Madbum......Take away the first two starts before he fixed things and Bumgarbner has the following line:

    35IP 22H 11BB (~0.9 WHIP) 6ER (ERA~1.54) 1HR 26K

Not bad at all for a 20 year old in AAA..

No way he gets dealt. And I think Cain or, more likely, Sanchez gets dealt in the off-season if that is the only way to get THE bat..

  7. +1 DrB, +24, +25, +55, +22, +18, +48, +++!

That has driven me away from so many boards too.

Sabean has been pretty good in determining who to keep and who to trade away. There have been few mistakes made along the way (but nobody's perfect) but his wins (Kent and Schmidt in particular, but also Nen, F-Rod, Livan, others) more than makes up for the ones he lost along the way. He has kept the ones who matter the most, Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Sandoval, etc.

AAA pitching does suck, relative to major league pitching, denial won't make it so. But that is not what Franchez needs, he needs to get used to seeing faster pitches so that he can time it better when batting. If this wasn't useful, Bonds would not have paid an unaccomplished left-handed pitcher to pitch to him regularly, plus paid to bring him along on trips and such, that would have been a waste of money.

  8. im sorry...but i am consistent

didnt like the sanchez trade when it happened, and i still dont like it

shoot me...i dont like trades that involve damage goods...and definitely dont like fa signings that do the same

i was attempting to point out the insanity of sabean's words

and ogc....kent was a throw in

would be nice if you could name an impact trade that has happened in the past 5 seasons

  9. bacci40,
As usual, you are avoiding teh real questin asked to you, instead talking about the trade.

  10. Bacci,

I have said several times that it appears that Sabes failed to do his due diligence in the Sanchez trade and the DeRosa trade. Brian Sabean has his flaws, no doubt about it.

Your comments re. Fred Sanchez the last two days had nothing at all to do with the trade. Yesterday, you were all over Brian Sabean because you wrongly assumed Sanchez was going to be called up before the completion of his rehab assignment to replace DeRosa. When that didn't happen, you came back today cracking jokes about him being left down there all year, when you know darn well that ain't gonna happen either. As for Sabean's comments about AAA that served as the inspiration for your attempt at humor, we've been through that too. Sabean was actually right in what he said about AAA, although the way he said it came across as thin skinned, defensive and clumsy with words, which is nothing new at all for him.

Again, why can't we be honest about Sabean's faults, but also about his strengths? The current team is flawed, but good enough that it has a chance to make the playoffs, and if it does, the pitching could carry it pretty deep. Sabes has assembled a very nice core of young players led by Timmy, Matt Cain, Sanchez, Wilson and Panda with Nate possibly sticking this year. He's got a highly rated farm system that promises to produce more young talent in the near future. He has hired a great scouting staff that has produced several fruitful drafts and a steady stream of good international talent.

In summary, Brian Sabean has made some mistakes, some pretty big mistakes, in trades and FA signings over the years, but has also produced a nice pipeline of young talent the promises to keep this team winning for years to come. My own opinion is that the good outweighs the bad. I can understand why you, or others, might see it the other way around, but at least be fair in your criticism.

  11. Kent was not a throw-in, you clearly didn't understand that trade if you thought that.
