AAA  Sacramento River Cats crushed the Fresno Grizzlies 12-2:

Peter Bourjos CF- 4 for 6, 2B.  BA= .474.
Miguel Gomez 2B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .262.
Chris Shaw LF- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .265.
Mac Williamson RF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(11).  BA= .308.
Jerry Sands 1B- 3 for 5, 2 HR(2).  BA= .407.
Ryder Jones DH- 1 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .304.
Casey Kelly RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 4.95.
Manny Parra LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.99.

Obviously a game to pad the old stat line but maybe this is what will shake Mac Williamson out of his funk.  This gives him a 4 game hit streak in which he is 6 for 14. Casey Kelly has turned in dominant Starts before but has had trouble with consistency. This was against about as tough a AAA lineup as you will find.

Doug Still LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.84.

I know there is no reason to rush Joey Bart, but my goodness!  He seems way too good for the NWL. I'm thinking Cal League would be a nice challenge for him over the last month of the minor league season.  Doug Still has 29 K's against 7 BB in 21.2 IP with 3 different teams this season.  He was the Giants 11'th round draft pick in 2017 but did not make his pro debut until this season.

This might be Tyler Beede's best appearance of the season so far.

A pair of 5 for 5 games from lower level prospects Aynesber Sivira and Andres Angulo.  Angulo spend 2 seasons in the DSL and this is his second rodeo in Arizona.  Sivira is just 18 yo.  He started off hot in the DSL last year but faded in the second half.  This was Beicker Mendoza's 3'rd consecutive game with at least 3 hits.  He is 10 for 17 in that span.

Game Wrap 7/15/2018: A's 6 Giants 2

The Giants ended the official first half of the season on a downer note as Andrew Suarez had a nightmare 4'th inning and the offense continued to sputter in a game whose outcome wasn't much in doubt after the A's put up a 4-spot in that 4'th inning.  Key Lines:

Chase d'Arnaud 3B- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .333.  The Giants have had success signing formerly highly ranked prospects to minor league contracts after their careers seemed to stall out.  d'Arnaud was a 4'th round draft pick by the Pirates in 2008 out of Pepperdine.  He had a lot of early success in the minors and was a fast riser in the Pirates system.  His career was slowed by a series of ill-timed hand injuries.  He finally got sustained AB's with ATL in 2016 where he hit .245 and showed doubles power. The Giants are his 6'th organization.  He put up solid numbers for the AAA Sacramento River Cats and got the callup when Joe Panik went back on the DL.  So far, he's filled in nicely in the IF and shown some pop with the bat.  Like other recent Giants minor league signings, let's hope for his sake this turns out to be the break he needed to have a significant MLB career.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.94.  Not sure what happened in the 4'th inning, but Suarez allowed 5 of his 6 baserunners in that inning.  There could have been some BABIP luck involved but 2 of the hits were counted as line drives.   Take out that horrible inning and he had 5 K's and 1 BB in 4 IP which is actually pretty dominant.  We'll see if he hits the rookie wall after the All-Star break when he starts facing teams a second time and they start to get a book on him, but for now we'll chalk this up to 1 inning of bad luck.

Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.  Don't let the ERA fool you. After his disastrous MLB debut, Black's subsequent 3 appearances have been beyond dominant.  6 K's, 0 BB's in 2.2 IP.  Pray for him to stay healthy.  If he does, the Giants have their midseason bullpen acquisition right there.

*********************************************************************************

The D'backs lost and the Dodgers and Rockies won so the D'Backs and Dodgers switch places with the Bad Guys leading the Snakes by 0.5 games.  The Rockies are 2 games back in 3'rd place while the Giants fall 4 games behind the leaders in 4'th place.  The Padres lost again and are fading fast into the west 14.5 games off the pace.  We'll officially declare the Padres out of the race until/unless they get back to less than a 10 game deficit.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants are now off until Friday, July 20 when they move across the Bay to face the A's again in Oakland.  Young Dereck Rodriguez is currently listed as the starter for that game but I'm guessing the Giants re-set their rotation for the second half.

*********************************************************************************

For those who care, the US Futures outscored the World Futures 10-6.  Heliot Ramos went 1 for 1 for the World team and got his hit off fellow Giants prospect, Shaun Anderson, who gave up 1 run on 2 hits in 1 IP and was credited with a Blown Save and the Win.

Game Wrap 7/14/2018: A's 4 Giants 3

If you just look at the score, you might think this was an exciting game, but although it had a few exciting moments, you would be wrong.  It was a ragged game with both SP's in the showers by the end of the 4'th inning. In the end, an off night for Tony Watson was the difference in the game.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .320.  Duggar was involved in all 3 of the Giants runs, driving in 1 and scoring 2.  In Game 1 of the series, he smoked 2 doubles down the RF line.  Both doubles in this game went to LF.  The first was a blooper down the LF line but the second was smoked over the head of LF Kris Davis who might have caught it if he was a better fielder, but it was definitely smoked.  Duggar also enhanced his reputation on defense with a running catch into the L-CF gap to take away extra bases.  First of all, he ran a long way and secondly he used his height to reach up and make it look easy.  I am not sure any either Gregor Blanco or Gorkys Hernandez would have made that catch and I'm pretty sure Austin Jackson would not have.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.25.  This could have been a lot worse as his GO/AO was 0/5 and the flyballs were not pop-ups.  Then in the second inning, Shark couldn't find home plate prompting a mound visit from Buster and another from pitching coach Curt Young.  His velocity was down to 90 MPH and his command was way off prompting open speculation by Kruk and Kuip that he might not be physically OK.  Shark was finally lifted for a PH, which turned out to be the right move as Austin Slater drove in the Giants 3'rd and final run of he game, just as he seemed to be starting to make some decent pitches.

Derek Holland LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.09.  Holland was electric again painting both corners with a 93 MPH FB that seemed to get on hitters more quickly than that while mixing in a sharp breaking ball and effective changeup.  Watching that, you could not help but think that Holland should be starting and Shark should be working things out in the bullpen.

Tony Watson LHP- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.08.  Watson has been Mr Reliable this season but not in this game as he had trouble finding the strike zone and with 3 straight hits to open the 7'th inning, the second being a HR that was crushed off the bat of Mark Canha to put the A's up by the final score of 4-3.

Ray Black RHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 13.50.  Black was summoned to get out of Tony Watson's jam in the 7'th inning and what an impressive performance it was!  The way he finished off the second batter was one of the most impressive things I've seen this season:  A 101 MPH FB at the letters, swing and miss, followed by a tight slider just off the outside corner at the knees, swing and miss.  Whoa!  That is just unfair and I love it!

*********************************************************************************

The D'Backs and Rockies won their games while the Dodgers lost to the Angels so the standings go D'Backs in first place by 0.5 games over the Dodgers, 2.5 over the Rockies and 3.5 over the Giants.  The Pathetic Padres lost again and are in last place, 14 games off the pace.

*********************************************************************************

Andrew Suarez goes for a series win today against lefty Sean Manaea.

PS:  After the game, Jeff Samardzija said he couldn't get his shoulder loose and Manager Bruce Bochy said there's a "discussion they need to have" about the rotation going forward.  Stay tuned!

Jalen Miller's BA had been drifting down since a blistering May, but he's picked it back up with a 6 game hit streak in which he is batting .308.

Manuel Geraldo has 6 hits in his last 2 games after an 0 for 19 and 2 for 29 skid.

DSL  Giants were idle.

Game Wrap 7/13/2018: Giants 7 A's 1

I was a big night for Steven Duggar who led the Giants attack in a game what was a nail biter until the 7'th inning.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .286.  Wow! This is what we've been waiting and hoping for with Duggar, who drove in 2 runs and scored 3 and was pretty much the difference in the game.  He scored the first 2 Giants runs of the game and his bases-loaded double was the big blow in the 5-run 7'th inning.  That double came of lefty Jeremy Bleich who was making his MLB debut just a couple of games after Duggar made his at the age of 31.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .289.  Buster is 5 for 12 after taking an 0 for 5 on 7/9.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.90.  Not a dominant start for Bum, but other than a solo HR to Chad Pinder, Bum allowed just 2 baserunners through 6 but then loaded the bases to start the 7'th inning with a leadoff single and 2 BB's.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.76.  Moronta got the call in the high leverage situation and delivered with a K, lineout and ground-out to get out of the bases-loaded jam Bumgarner left behind.

Sam Dyson RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.20.  By the time Dyson entered the game, the Giants had a 6 run lead, but those were 2 easy innings using just 19 pitches and just 4 in the 8'th innings.  He was pounding the zone with a heeaavvy fastball.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers, D'Backs and Rockies all won so the Dodgers lead the NL West by 0.5 games over the Snakes and 3 games over the Rockies.  The Giants are in 4'th place also 3 games behind but trail the Rockies by percentage points.  he Pathetic Padres bring up the rear of the division 13.5 games off the pace.

Jeff Samardzija tries to secure a series win tonight facing oft-injured lefty Brett Anderson.

Friday, July 13, 2018

Down on the Farm: 7/12/2018

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees swarmed the Sacramento River Cats 9-4:

Kelby Tomlinson SS- 1 for 3, 2 BB.   BA= .244.
Jerry Sands 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Trevor Brown C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .254.
Tyler Beede RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.79.

Jerry Sands gets the promo to Sacramento.  Tyler Beede continues to struggle in a bullpen role.  This is a roster decimated by promotions to the MLB club.  Steven Duggar, Austin Slater, Chase d'Arnaud, Alen Hanson, Andrew Suarez, Dereck Rodriguez and Reyes Moronta all started the season on the River Cats roster and are now contributing to the MLB club.  Mac Williamson was also called up and contributed but has struggled since a concussion injury.  Ray Black started the season in AA, but was recently promoted from Sacramento too.

********************************************************************************

AA  Trenton Thunder outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1(10 innings):

Aramis Garcia C/1B- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .216.
Jake McCasland RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Patrick Ruotolo RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.84.

An already weak Squirrels roster is further weakened by Jerry Sands departure for Sacramento.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports outscored the San Jose Giants 8-5:

Wander Franco "The Elder" 3B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .273.
Gio Brusa 1B- 1 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .251.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Lexington Legends 7-4:

Heliot Ramos CF- 3 for 5, HR(7), SB(6).  BA= .249.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 3 for 5.  BA= .286.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .238.
Orlando Garcia 2B- 1 for 3, BB, SB(8).  BA= .249.
Jose Marte RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.65.
Stetson Woods RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.   ERA= 1.69.
Olbis Parra RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.31.

That's the kind of line we are hoping to see a lot more of from Heliot Ramos.  He's been steadily improving his numbers over the season hitting .272. in May and .300 in 10 games so far in June.  ogc delved into his numbers a few days ago and found that an 0 for 25 slump in May hurt his overall BA by about 20 pts.  Take that skid out and he's hitting .270 in all other games.  So, here's to a strong finish for Heliot Ramos!

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Everett Aquasox 3-1:

Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .283.
Diego Rincones LF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .365.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .290.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .286.
Wander Franco "The Younger" 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .221.
Mikey Edie CF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .377.
Nico Giarratano SS- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .308.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Sidney Duprey LHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.75.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Joey Bart hits dingers! He's homered in 4 consecutive games.  Sean Hjelle stretches out to 2 innings.  Jesus Tona is a converted catcher who is putting up intriguing numbers as the Volcanoes Closer.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Padres1 blanked the Giants Black 5-0:

Randy Norris LF/CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .314.
Raiber Gutierrez CF- 2 for 2, 2B.  BA= .182.
Israel Cruz RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.91.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange pounded the Padres2 8-2(Game 1 of DH, 7 innings):

Ismael Munguia LF- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .367.

Fabian Pena C- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .313.
Patrick Hilson CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .224.
Julio Rodriguez RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.68.

Patrick Hilson is hitting .308 over his last 10 games.  Julio Rodriguez is the man with the magic curveball that spins up to 3000 rpm.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Padres2 destroyed the Giants Orange 8-0(Game 2 of DH, 7 innings):

Jesus Gomez LHP- 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.83.

Luis Toribio had the only 2 hits in the game for the Giants.  Jesus Gomez is 17 yo, 6'2", 180 lbs.  He has 25 K's, 10 BB's in 19.2 IP.

Robinson Batista LF- 4 for 4, 2 2B, 3B.  BA= .276.
Josdeiker Marcano RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.30.

Game Wrap 7/11/2018: Giants 5 Cubs 4

The Giants scored 4 runs in the first inning, then none until Buster Posey's walk-off single in the 13'th.  Key Lines:

Chase d'Arnaud 3B- 2 for 7, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .250.  d'Arnaud gave Pablo Sandoval a breather at 3B.  He opened the scoring with a HR to lead off the first inning.  He later added a double which did not figure in the scoring.  d'Arnaud is the latest minor league free agent and callup to give the Giants a boost.  I'm going to try to do a post on the Giants top 10 minor league FA signings aka Dumpster Dives.

Buster Posey C- 3 for 7.  BA= .282.  Buster's legs had been getting a bit rubbery lately.  The day off Tuesday seemed to help.  His first 2 hits went for naught, but the 3'rd was the game winner, a flyball to RF that drove in Brandon Belt from 2B with 2 outs in the 13'th inning.

Gorkys Hernandez LF- 2 for 6, 2B.  Gorkys had the other big hit in the first inning driving in 2 with a double and coming around to score on Steven Duggar's single.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.36.  Still not what we've come to expect from Johnny Cueto, but better than his last Start.  His next Start will now be after the All-Star Break. Does he need more rest or does he need Starts to get sharp?  Can the Giants set up a rotation so he's pitching every 6'th game instead of every 5'th?

Tony Watson LHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.67.  Watson gave up a rare run on Javier Baez' HR to lead off the 7'th inning which tied the game at 4.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.57.  Melancon is looking stronger his last 3 appearances.

Will Smith LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.95.  I guess with the day off today, Bochy felt he could use his Closer for 2 innings?

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.89.  Giants have 7 potential SP on the roster which gives Bruce Bochy a lot of flexibility, especially in a game like this.  With Holland taking the Start on Tuesday, and the day off today, Young Dereck was available with a starter's length.  He batted to lead off the 13'th, so you know he was in there for at least 6 or 7 innings if needed.  If you want to point to a difference in this ballgame, that's it right there.  Overall, the bullpen threw 8 IP with 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 9 K's.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading D'Backs were destroyed by the Rockies 19-2 while the Dodgers topped the Padres 4-2.  The Dodgers now trail the D'Backs by 0.5 games while the Giants are 3 games behind and the Rockies 3.5.  The Padres bring up the rear of the division 12 games off the pace.

DSL  Giants vs Colorado postponed due to rain.

Game Wrap 7/10/2018: Cubs 2 Giants 0

A bloop double, a Wild Pitch and a throwing Error were all it took to ruin a dominant pitching performance by Derek Holland who was subbing in when Johnny Cueto's scheduled Start was moved back a day.  Key Lines:

Derek Holland LHP- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.17.  Holland was masterful through 6.1 IP spotting his fastball on both side of the plate and mixing in secondary pitches.  The 8 K's tied a season high and this was his first Start where he did not issue a walk.  With 1 out in the 7'th, Addison Russell blooped a double to R-CF.  Bochy summoned Sam Dyson from the bullpen who bounced one in the dirt that got away from Nick Hundley.  Russell broke for 3B and Hundley's throw was offline and go away from Pablo Sandoval allowing Russell to score.  Dyson would go on to give up a another run, but it didn't matter with a Giants offense that is so cold, it froze over last night.

Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 20.25.  The other bright spot from this game was a dominant inning from Ray Black who shook off his rough MLB debut.  Black maxed out at 99 MPH on the TV radar gun but that was more than enough has he blew away 2 Cubs and got the 3'rd out in a soft liner to 2B.  If Black stays healthy, it isn't hard to imagine him closing out games before the season is over.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 4 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who topped the Rockies 5-3.  The Dodgers lost to the Padres and are 1.5 games behind the D'Backs in 2'nd place.  The Rockies are 4.5 games behind the leaders while the Padres remain in last place, 12 games off the pace.

AAA  PCL is idle for their All-Star Break.

*********************************************************************************

AA  EL is idle for their All-Star Break.

*********************************************************************************

A+ San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports 5-4:

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 4, 3B, Sac, SB(16).  BA= .238.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .285.
Heath Quinn LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .324.
Gio Brusa 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .251.
Jacob Heyward RF/LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .249.
Domenic Mazza LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.98.
Chris Roberts RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 108.00.
Nolan Riggs RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.74.
Frank Rubio RHP- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 12.38.

The Cal League is a much bigger challenge than the SAL.  Perfecto Man, Domenic Mazza, is handling the challenge.  Chris Roberts is a lower round draftee, an obscure college pitcher from an obscure program.  He might not be quite ready for the Cal League.

*********************************************************************************

Low  Rome Braves outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 6-5:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .246.
Shane Matheny 2B- 1 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .207.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 5.  BA= .233.
Trevor Abrams DH- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .292.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.14.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.69.

********************************************************************************

Short Season Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-6:

Jose Layer CF- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .368.
Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .371.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .304.
Mikey Edie RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .373.
Jake Wong RHP- 1.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 10.80.
Miguel Figueroa RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.48.

Jose Layer, Diego Rincones and Mikey Edie continue to rake.  He's moving way up my prospect list.  Joey Bart's dinger was a grand slam.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Black vs Dodgers and Giants Orange vs Padres2 postponed by rain.

Monsoon season arrives.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants beat the Royals2 3-1:

Richgelon Juliana CF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .281.
Luis Toribio 3B- 3 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .323.
Robert Gomez RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .216.
Cesar Gonzalez C- 1 for 3, 2B, HBP.  BA= .286.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.27.
Cristian Acosta RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.81.

Luis Toribio has a chance to hit .300 with double digit HR's.  I don't remember when a Dominican Dandy did that before.

Game Wrap 7/9/2018: Giants 2 Cubs 1(11 innings)

Pablo Sandoval was the hero for the second consecutive game as he beat Joe Madden's stacked infield  for a walk-off single in the 11'th inning to back a stellar pitching effort by Andrew Suarez and the bullpen.  Key Lines:

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.   BA= .260.  Hunter Pence had a 1 out triple in the 10'th inning.  Joe Madden brought Ben Zobrist in from the OF to be a 5'th IF.  Steve Cishek rendered that a moot issue with consecutive strikeouts of Chase d'Arnaud and Steven Duggar.  Madden got another chance to show off his managerial skills when Andrew McCutchen and Brandon Belt singled with McCutchen reaching 3B with 1 out in the 11'th.  After an intentional walk to Brandon Crawford, Pabs came up and slapped a single over the IF for the walk-off hit.

In addition to his 2 hits, Pabs contributed to the Giants first run reaching 1B on an error.  Alen Hanson then replaced Pabs at 1B on a fielder's choice and used his speed to score from 1B on a wild pick-off throw by Kyle Hendricks.

Buster Posey C- 0 for 5.  BA= .280.  Buster is hitting just .167 in July and his 2 for 21 over his last 6 games, 0 for 10 in his last 2.  Buster won't be going to the All-Star Game as a reserve in order to rest a barking hip.  He might need a rest sooner than that.  He really looks like he has no legs under him right now.

Hunter Pence LF- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .214.  Pence may have earned himself a few more looks in the Giants very unsettled LF situation.  The triple into Triples Alley in the 10'th was vintage Hunter Pence.  If he's lost a step, it didn't show on the basepaths as he had thoughts about turning it into an inside-the-park HR.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.75.  The 4 BB's don't look so great, but there's nothing wrong with the rest of the line as he missed bats and kept most of the contact on the ground.  In an age when groundball pitchers are an endangered species, Suarez has a GO/AO= 1.68. Only Ty Blach and Sam Dyson have stronger GB ratios on the team and Suarez has the best K/9 of those 3.  His GB% of 52.4 is #9 among pitchers with at least 70 IP.

Suarez now has 3 consecutive Starts in which he has gone at least 6 innings while allowing 1 run.  He allowed 1 run in 5.2 IP, in the game before.  His ERA is 2.28 in 47.3 IP since May 28.

Bullpen- 5 IP, 1 H,  0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  The Bullpen was nails with Tony Watson, Mark Melancon, Will Smith, Reyes Moronta and Ty Blach throwing 1 shutout inning each.  Their combined GO/AO was 10/0.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants gained sole possession of 3'rd place in the NL West, 3 games behind the D'Backs who were idle.  The 2'nd place Dodgers topped he Padres 8-2 and are 0.5 games behind the D'Backs.  The idle Rockies remain 3.5 games back but fall into 4'th place while the Padres fall farther off the pace at 12 games behind the leaders.

Johnny Cueto tries to rebound from his rough return from the DL tonight facing lefty Jose Quintana.

Down on the Farm: 7/8/2018

AAA  Reno Aces defeated the Sacramento River Cats 8-2:

Gregor Blanco CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .239.
Kelby Tomlinson SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .241.
Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .321.
Jordan Johnson RHP- 3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.27.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.59.
Josh Osich LHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.71.

Miguel Gomez can hit.  I wonder if Tyler Rogers' submaweenie style would play in the majors?  Just when you think Josh Osich is getting it together.....

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Akron Rubber Ducks 2-1:

Aramis Garcia 1B- 1 for 3, HR(8).  BA= .215.
Chase Johnson RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.45.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.25.

EL has the next 2 days off for their All-Star break which is probably why Chase Johnson and Shaun Anderson both pitched today.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes outscored the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Wander Franco "The Elder" 3B- 2 for 5, SB(4).  BA= .268.
Heath Quinn LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .324.
Dillon Dobson 1B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Brandon Van Horn SS- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .217.

Van Horn has hit 4 of his 8 HR's in his last 10 games despite hitting just .171 in that span.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets downed the Rome Braves 5-3(Game 1 of DH, 7 innings):

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HBP.  BA= .242.
Logan Baldwin RF- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .248.
Orlando Garcia 2B- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .243.
Rob Calabrese C- 2 for 3.  BA= .230.
Tyler Brown LF- 2 for 2, 2B, Sac.   BA= .244.
Garrett Cave RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.87.
John Russell RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Rome Braves 4-0(Game 2 of DH, 7 innings):

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .242.
John Gavin LHP- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.82.

GJ's scored all 4 runs in the 7'th inning.  Ramos' double drove in 2 runs and came in the next AB after Shane Matheny's 2-run single.  With Jason Bahr traded from the San Jose roster, maybe Gavin gets a promo to take his place?

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Boise Hawks 12-7:

Jose Layer CF- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .347.
Joey Bart C- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .316.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .295.
Wander Franco "The Younger" 1B- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .203.
Chris Corbett DH- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .273.
Mikey Edie RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB, SB(4).  BA= .364.
Nico Giarratano SS- 1 for 2, BB, Sac.  BA= .292.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 0.00.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange and Giants Black were both idle.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants were idle.

Game Wrap 7/8/2018: Giants 13 Cardinals 8

Madison Bumgarner was not his sharpest self and the bullpen was less then stellar, but the Giants offense awoke from a deep slump to outscore the Cardinals in a high scoring affair to split the 4 game series.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .333.   Duggar looked a bit lost in the first 3 AB's of his MLB debut, but started a 5-run rally in the 6'th inning with a sharp line drive double to R-CF and added another hit later in the game.  We'll call this a successful debut!

Andrew McCutchen RF- 3 for 6.  BA= .262.  Cutch was stinging the ball for 3 hits.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .300.  Belt's double was hit clanged off the bricks in RF so hard it bounce all the way to Tommy Pham in CF and Belt had to settle for a double on a ball that looked like it might have triple possibilities.

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 3 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .257.  Pabs made several scintillating plays at 3B, one of which jammed his left thumb which had him rubbing it for the rest of the half-inning raising concerns that he might have a serious injury.  He allayed those fears in his next AB with a smash to right with 2 runners on base which would have been a clean splash hit were it not for the ball bouncing off the top of one of the water cannons on the arcade.  Pabs added a 2-run single to the opposite field later in the game for a 5-RBI game.  This game broke him out of a 1 for 17 slump.

Alen Hanson 2B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .284.  With this game, Hanson is 8 for 26, BA= .308 in 8 games this month.

Gorkys Hernandez LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .279.  Gorkys has been scuffling a bit at the plate but had 2 nice hits in this one.  He may have solved Bochy's playing time issues, but not in a good way, as he had to leave the game after a 2-run single due to a tight calf.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.09.  Bummy didn't have this best stuff or command which Kruk and Kuip commented on.  The offense picked him up in this one.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.86.  Moronta seems to be the high leverage pitcher right now, the guy Bochy brings in when he needs to get out of a jam.  Moronta came in with 1 on and 1 out and blew away 2 batters to get out of the 6'th with a 6-4 Giants lead.  I'm thinking Moronta is going to be the Giants Closer before the end of his career.

Ray Black RHP- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 81.00.  I would say this was not a successful MLB debut.  I missed Black's appearance due to a work related obligation.  Any scouting reports out there? Black had a rough AAA debut too, but then really settled down.

*********************************************************************************

The D'Backs, Dodgers and Rockies all lost so the Giants now trail the 3'rd place Rockies by percentage points, 3.5 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs who lead the Dodgers by 1 game.  The Padres remain in last place, 11.5 games off the pace.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants start a 3-game series against the Cubs tomorrow evening with Andrew Suarez facing Kyle Hendricks.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants made a significant trade early in the day which led to the call ups of Steven Duggar and Ray Black.  They sent OF Austin Jackson and RHP Cory Gearrin along with RHP prospect Jason Bahr to the Rangers for the proverbial PTBNL or cash considerations.  Both Jackson and Gearrin struggled this season, although Gearrin had pitched better in his last few games.  By trading them now, the Giants are able to avoid having their remaining salaries count against the CBT threshold.  GM Bobby Evans indicated that the Giants felt they needed the tax space to make a move as the trade deadline approaches.  Even with this amount of relief, the Giants are not going to be able to take on a star player's salary, but may well be able to swing a deal for a LF with some pop which would seem to be their biggest need.

Jason Bahr had some pretty big fans who read and comment here who are undoubtedly disappointed in his inclusion in the trade.  I am sure the Giants had to include a prospect as payment for the Rangers taking on the salaries of Jackson and Gearrin.  Bahr has put up good numbers since being drafted last year, but a recent scouting report after his promotion to the Cal League had his FB in the 90-94 MPH range with a nice slider.  His ceiling is likely #5 SP in MLB or a max out in AAA.

The timing is interesting for Steven Duggar as he was not exactly tearing up the PCL.  Although he had hit in 9 of his last 10 game for Sacramento, he was hitting just .225 in that stretch.  I think all of us wanted to see Ray Black and his 100+ MPH FB in the major leagues.  It remains to be seen if we should have been more careful what we wished for.

Down on the Farm: 7/7/2018

AAA  Reno Aces dominated the Sacramento River Cats 8-1:

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.
Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .306.
Kelby Tomlinson SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .213.
Tyler Beede RHP= 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.53.

This was Tyler Beede's longest appearance since going to the bullpen.  Steven Duggar has a hit in 9 of his last 10 games but is hitting just .225 in that span.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels sank the Akron Rubber Ducks 6-2:

Jerry Sands 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(13).  BA= .258.
Ryan Howard DH- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .282.

Jerry Sands slashed .310/.394/.586 in June.  He's hitting .375 in 7 games in July.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes pounded the San Jose Giants 14-6:

Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .284.
Jacob Heyward LF- 1 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .244.
Sandro Fabian RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .234.
Matt Winn C- 2 for 4.  BA= .241.
Brandon Van Horn SS- 2 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .216.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Johneshwy Fargas RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Looky who pitched a shutdown inning with 2 K's!  Johneshwy!

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Rome Braves postponed by rain.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-4:

Mikey Edie CF- 4 for 5, 2B SB(3).  BA= .365.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 5, HR(4).  BA= .282.
Dalton Combs RF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .237.
Nico Giarraratano SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .283.
Trenton Toplikar RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.69.
Doug Still LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.46.

Mikey Edie washed out of the NWL last season then tore it up for the AZL Giants.  Now he seems to have found his footing in S-K.  He is 21 yo. David Villar continues to mash it in his pro debut.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Black beat the Padres2 7-3:

Alexander Canario CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .220.
Enoc Watts SS- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .238.
Frankie Tostado LF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .373.
Randy Norris RF- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .290.
Johan Herrera RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.12.
Luis Amaya LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 11.25.
Jordan Scott RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Trevor Horn RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.08.

Frankie Tostado seems to be a hitter.  Alexander Canario's bat seems to be slowly coming to life.  He's hitting .320 over his last 6 games.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange outlasted the Indians1 10-7(10 innings):

Yorlis Rodriguez 3B- 2 for 5, BB.  BA= .359.
Patrick Hilson CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2), BB.  BA= .234.
Hector Santiago DH- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .231.
Ryan Walker RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.29.
Marco Gonzalez LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.35.

If Patrick Hilson can hit, he's a very interesting prospect because he's about as tooled up as anyone in the Giants system.  Very fast twitchy athlete!  He has a 7 game hit streak going in which he is batting .357.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants blanked the Royals2 5-0:

Andrew Caraballo SS- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .274.
Richgelon Juliana CF- 3 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .275.
Martin Doria 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .302.
Robert Gomez RF- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .182.
Sonny Vargas LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/2.  ERA= 5.40.
Jesus Gomez LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.12.

Sonny Vargas is another 17 yo lefty. This was his 3'rd Start in 7 appearances.  He has allowed 2 ER in 11 IP over his last 2 Starts/Appearances.  Juliana is hitting .333 over his last 10 games.

Game Wrap 7/7/2018: Cardinals 3 Giants 2

Jeff Samardzija wasn't half bad in his return from the DL and the bullpen shut it down for 4 innings, but the offense once again failed to capitalize leaving the Giants on the losing end of a 1-run differential.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .296.  Belt was the only hitter in the lineup with more than 1 hit had the only Giants XBH.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.42.  Shark kept the ball in the yard and dialed it up to 96 MPH, so maybe he's finally fully healthy?  Let's all hope!

Bullpen- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  Derek Holland, Sam Dyson, Cory Gearrin and Mark Melancon all pitched 1 shutout inning each.  None are part of the current Key 3 of Will Smith, Tony Watson and Reyes Moronta.  Maybe the bullpen, which hit a hiccup when Hunter Strickland went on the DL, getting its mojo back? Dyson has not been scored on in his last 3 appearances.  Gearrin has had 5 consecutive scoreless appearances with just 1 hit in 4.1 IP with 5 K's and 0 BB.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading D'Backs beat the Padres 3-1 while the Dodgers and Rockies also won so the Giants fall 4 games off the lead in 4'th place.  The Dodgers are 0.5 games back and the Rockies are 3 games behind.  The Padres continue to bring up the rear 11.5 games behind the leaders.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries for a series split tomorrow facing RHP Jack Flaherty.

*********************************************************************************

Joe Panik hit the DL with his groin strain.  Kelby Tomlinson got passed up for the callup with Chase d'Arnaud getting the reward for his fine season in Sacramento.  Hunter Strickland was moved to the 60 Day DL to make room on the 40 man roster for d'Arnaud.  Chris Stratton was optioned down to Sacramento to make room for Jeff Samardzija on the 25 man active roster.

Down on the Farm: 7/6/2018

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outscored the Reno Aces 8-7:

Steven Duggar CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .272.
Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 1 for 2, BB, SF, Sac.  BA= .208.
Mac Willliamson RF- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .333.
Casey Kelly RHP- 6.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.15.

Kelby might want to get his bags packed. From the looks of Joe Panik tonight, he's going to be out for awhile.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Akron Rubber Ducks downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

Taylor Hill RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 3.78.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Olbis Parra makes his AA debut coming up from Augusta.  Rookie ball was the highest he pitched prior to this season.  The Squirrels lineup is a wasteland.

Luis Toribio 3B- 2 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .318.

Game Wrap 7/6/2018: Giants 3 Cardinals 2

The Giants needed a Stopper today.  Although it was not a dominant performance, Young Dereck Rodriguez stepped up and got it done to end the Giants 4 game losing streak.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .258.  Cutch has been scuffling along with most of the Giants lineup of late.  He drove in the winning run with a hard single through the left-side hole to drive in Hunter Pence from 2B.

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), BB.  BA= .253.  Pabs hit an opposite field dinger that probably would not have gone out on a colder night, but got some carry and barely cleared he LF wall to give the Giants a short-lived 2-1 lead in the 6'th inning.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 11/2.  ERA= 3.09.  Young Dereck didn't have much of a curveball all night, so made do by spotting his fastball to the 4 corners of the strike zone and by inducing a lot of groundball outs.  Credit for getting it done without his secondary stuff.  Based on performance, he and Andrew Suarez should be the #4 and #5 SP's with Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija back, assuming they both stay back.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 1.07.  Smith had to face the #3, #4 and #5 hitters all from the right side of the plate in the 9'th inning.  He made it look easy, although he got Yadier Molina to reach just enough to keep it in the park to lead off the inning.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain 3.5 games behind the D'Backs to topped the Padres 3-1.  The Dodgers are leading the Angels 2-1 in he 9'th inning and sit 0.5 games behind he D'Backs pending the final.  The Rockies are leading the Mariners and sit 4 games behind the leaders pending the final.  The Padres fall 11.5 games behind in last place.

Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Love what we're seeing from Jose Layer and Diego Rincones.   Giants are taking it very slow with 2'nd round draft pick Sean Hjelle.

Julio Rodriguez is a 18 yo, 6'3', 180 lbs from Cuba who recently got some national notoriety for having an eye-popping spin rate of 3000 rpm on his curveball.  A kid to keep in eye on.

*********************************************************************************

Game Wrap 7/5/2018:

The Giants and their fans had to feel hopeful about coming home with Johnny Cueto coming off the DL to open their series with the Cardinals.  Those hopes were quickly dashed when Cueto gave up a 2 dingers and a 4-spot in the first inning while Luke Weaver spun a perfecto into the 6'th inning.   The Cardinals won going away.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson LF/SS- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .279.  Gorkys Hernandez finally broke Weaver's Perfecto in the 6'th on an IF single.  Hanson followed that with a 2-run shot into the RF arcade.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.95.  Cueto settled down after giving up a 5'th run in the 2'nd inning, so hopefully this was just some rust that had to get knocked off and he'll be back to his old self next start.

Ty Blach LHP- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.68.  Not sure Blach has anything left in the tank.  May need some R&R in Sacramento.

Derek Holland LHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.40.  After finishing the 6'th with a K, Holland gave up a single and homer to open the 7'th.  After that he settled down and put up a dominant K/BB line.

*********************************************************************************

The D'Backs lost to the Padres 6-3 to fall out of first place by percentage points behind the idle Dodgers.  The Giants fell into 4'th place by percentage points behind the idle Rockies, 3.5 games behind the Dodgers.  The Padres still bring up the rear, 10.5 games off the pace.

Steven Okert LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.46.

6 of Steven Okert's 11 ER allowed came in 1 appearance on 6/26 in Albuquerque when he only recored 1 out.  He has not allowed an ER in any other of his last 10 appearances. Chris Shaw is hitting .300 with 5 HR's in his last 10 games.

Trent Toplikar RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.70.

If Jose Layer can stay healthy for the rest of the season, I believe he will move WAY up in my Giants prospect rankings.  I really like his athleticism and it sure looks like he can hit.  Joey Bart brought the fireworks to Salem-Keizer with 2 dingers in his first game on being promoted from Rookie ball.  Woo! Hoo!!.

DSL  Mariners outscored the Giants 12-8:

Luis Toribio DH- 2 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .301.
Andrew Carabello 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .245.
Martin Doria RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .302.
Rodolfo Bone C- 2 for 3, BB, SF.  BA= .360.
Freddery Paulino RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.45.

Freddery Paulino is another 17 yo pitcher who is looking good for the DSL Giants. Luis Toribio and Jean Pena are tied for the team lead in HR's with 5 each.  They are tied for 3'rd in HR's in the DSL.

Game Wrap 7/4/2018: Rockies 1 Giants 0

They say it is a game of inches.  The difference in this game was a solo HR in the bottom of the 7'th inning by Chris Iannetta which if it was fair, it was only fair by a few inches.  That was the only blemish on an outstanding pitching performance by Andrew Suarez and the Giants offense was not able to pick him up.  You give up 1 run in Coors Field and you should win.   Tough, tough loss!  Key Lines:

Andrew Suarez LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 3.92.  Suarez was outstanding and pitched more than well enough to win.  We'll see how the Giants rotation shakes out with the return of Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija, but Suarez stated his case to remain in it.

*********************************************************************************

With the Loss, the Giants sit in 3'rd place in the NL West 4 games behind the leading D'Backs pending the outcome of the D'Backs vs Cardinals game in progress at this writing.  The Dodgers topped the Pirates 6-4 and are 1 games behind the leaders.  The Rockies are 4.5 games back in 4'th place and the Padres lost again to the A's to fall 12 games off the pace in last place.

*********************************************************************************

Johnny Cueto returns from the DL tomorrow evening as the Giants return to AT&T Park to open a series against the Cardinals.

Down on the Farm: 7/3/2018

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies shut out the Sacramento River Cats 5-0:

Jordan Johnson RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.20.
Josh Osich LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.84.
Steven Okert LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.91.

Josh Osich seems to have pulled himself together again.  Not much demand for a lefty reliever in SF right now, though.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Harrisburg Senators outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-6(10 innings):

Caleb Gindl RF/LHP- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .265.
Dylan Davis LF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(8).  BA= .250.
Jerry Sands 1B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .252.
Chase Johnson RHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.59.
Carlos Diaz LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.17.
Garrett Williams LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.12.
Dillon McNamara RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.17.
Caleb Gindl LHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Hopefully just a blip for Chase Johnson.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 7-0:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .293.

Jalen Miller's bat is holding up well past the halfway point of the minor league season.  He had 2 of the Giants 3 hits in this game.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Columbia Fireflies edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:

John Gavin LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.99.

Heliot Ramos sat out this one. Hopefully just a day off.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Vancouver Canadians 5-4:

Jose Layer CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
David Villar 3B- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .227.
Wander Franco The Younger 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR1).  BA= .226.
Nico Giarratano SS- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .275.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.00.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Giants Orange and Giants Black were both idle.

*********************************************************************************

DSL Giants beat the Mariners 8-3:

Richgelon Juliana CF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .260.
Martin Doria PR/3B- 3 for 3, 2 2B.  BA= .286.
Andrew Caraballo 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .220.
Jose Hernandez RF- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .212.
Juan Sanchez LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 1.19.

Current international class aside, I would probably rank Juan Sanchez as the #1 Dominican Dandy prospect right now.  Really excited to see his pitching lines.

Game Wrap 7/3/2018: Rockies 8 Giants 1

Second legs of road trips have not been kind to the Giants this season and Coors Field is not the place you would expect to see a break in this trend and Chris Stratton did not seem like the pitcher who would either.  The Giants apparently did not recover from game one's disappointment and suffered a brutal beatdown in a harmonic convergence of bad vibes.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .287.  Hanson had been in a 1 for 12 skid coming in so it's good to see him break out of that.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .298.  Belt and Hanson had 4 of the Giants 6 hits, all singles.

Chris Stratton RHP- 5.2 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.93.  Probably should give Stratton a Coors Field Mulligan, but his previous start was rough too.  With Cueto and Samardzija coming back this week, gotta wonder where that leaves Stratton.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading D'Backs beat the Cardinals 4-2 while the 2'nd place Dodgers topped the Pirates 8-3.   That left the 3'rd place Giants 3.5 games out of first place while the Dodgers remained 1.5 games out.  The Rockies stayed in 4'th place, 5 games behind the leaders while the Last Place Padres lost to the A's 6-2 to fall 11.5 games off the pace.

*********************************************************************************

Andrew Suarez hopes for a better outcome to salvage game 3 of the series against Lefty Tyler Anderson on Independence Day.
