Game Wrap 7/31/2018: Giants 3 Padres 2(10 Innings)

The Giants won their 3'rd game in a row and 2'nd in a row in extra innings behind another Quality Start from Young Dereck Rodriguez and just enough offense.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 4, HR(11), BB.  BA= .258.  Cutch was the subject of trade rumors but the Giants ended up keeping him around, at least for now.  Maybe gaining 2 games on the Dodgers over the past 2 days had something to do with that?  Anyway, Cutch followed up his 4 times on base night with a solo HR which temporarily gave the Giants a 2-1 lead in the 5'th inning.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .250.  Longoria tripled to lead off the 10'th inning and scored the winning run on Brandon Crawford's 2-out single.  Longo came back from the DL just in time as the Giants face a whole slew of LHP's coming up.

Austin Slater 1B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .305.  Slater continues to be an OBP machine sporting a .440 on the season and .500 with a .350 BA over his last 7 games.  Short Sample Size, of course.

Brandon Crawford 2 for 5.  BA= .285.  Crawford's bat is coming to live as he is 5 for 16 over his last 3 games.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.59.  This was Young Dereck's 6'th Quality Start in a row with 3 innings of shutout relief work tucked into the middle of that.  Is he the ace of the staff right now?  I might have to officially retire the Young Dereck nickname and go to DRod!

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(6).  ERA- 1.31.  Smith got the W last night because the game was tied when he entered it.  Today he got the Save as he entered with a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 10'th.  I'd say right now he is firmly entrenched as the Giants Closer.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers lost to the BrewCrew 1-0 while the D'Backs blanked the Rangers 6-0 and the Rockies topped the Cardinals 5-3.  That leaves the D'Backs in first place by 0.5 games over the Rockies who lead the Dodgers by percentage points.  The Giants are now 5 games behind the D'Backs for the division lead and have made up 2.5 games with their 3 consecutive Wins.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get a travel day all the way to Phoenix, AZ for a 4 game set with the D'Backs which could be a pivotal series.  Madison Bumgarner tries to get them off to a winning start on Thursday night facing Zack Greinke.

Down on the Farm: 7/30/2018

AAA  Iowa Cubs dominated the Sacramento River Cats 8-1:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 2.  BA= .333.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4, HR(22).  BA= .262.
Trevor Brown C- 2 for 3.  BA= .263.
Jose Valdez RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.25.

Joe Panik was lifted mid-game to catch a flight to San Diego.  He also appeared in the Giants game in the evening.  Chris Shaw keeps hitting dingers.

A+  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Kannapolis Intimidators edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:

Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 3, HBP.  BA= .276.
Trevor Abrams 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .241.
John Gavin LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.09.
John Russell RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.22.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.40.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Everett Aquasox 8-6:

Jose Layer CF- 2 for 4, HR(5), HBP.  BA= .291.
Mikey Edie RF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .356.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .276.
Robinson Medrano 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .265.
Ricardo Genoves C- 1 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .189.
Nico Giarratano 2B- 2 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .322.
Jake Wong RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.65.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(7).  ERA= 0.45.

David Villar is hitting dingers at almost the same pace as Joey Bart.  Jake Wong's lines are looking more like a high draft pick after a slow start to his pro career. He has 6 scoreless IP in his last 2 Starts with 6 K's.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Monsoon storms in AZ caused both the Giants Orange and Giants Black games to be suspended.  Highlights for both games will come after completion on a future date.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Pirates2 defeated the Giants 4-3:

Martin Doria 2B- 2 for 2, BB, SB(8).  BA= .259.
Freddery Paulino RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.40.

Game Wrap 7/30/2018: Giants 5 Padres 3(12 Innings)

The Giants squandered a 3-run lead to go into extra innings but salvaged a win when Gorkys Hernandez homered in the 12'th and they tacked on an insurance run.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 3 for 5, HBP.  BA= .258.  Cutch did not get credit for a R or RBI, but his single in the 12'th advanced Kelby Tomlinson to 3B to set up the insurance run.   He may have polished up his trade value with a nice night at the plate from the leadoff spot in the lineup.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 6.  BA= .291.  Ironically it was a flyball forceout that gave Buster his RBI in the 12'th.  Buster is 9 for 18 over his last 4 games and has his July BA up to .293.  Oh, and Bochy is putting his top 2 OBP guys at the top of the order regardless of SB's?  What a concept!

Chase d'Arnaud 2B- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .282.  d'Arnaud muscled up and crushed one into the second deck of the milling company down the 3B line to drive in 3 in the 2'nd inning.  That would be the Giants last scoring until the 12'th.  d'Arnaud has 3 dingers in just 39 AB's since his callup.  He was lifted in a double switch in the 6'th.  As Vin Scully would say, "go figure!"

Gorkys Hernandez LF- 1 for 5, HR(13).  BA= .268.  Gorkys' second dinger in 2 games broke the tie in the 12'th.  Despite the 2 dingers, he is hitting just .150 over his last 7 games.

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.90.  Holland had a Holland Start.  Bochy lifted him for Reyes Moronta with 0 outs in the 6'th after he allowed a walk to Eric Hosmer with a string of RH batters due up.  Holland seemed surprised when he saw Boch coming to get him, but it turned out to be a good move as Moronta was lights out.

Bullpen- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  Reyes Moronta just keeps getting more dominant with each appearance.  He completely shut down the Padres for 2 innings in this one.  I have to say I was a bit disgusted when I saw Mark Melancon warming up for the 8'th inning.  He threw some good pitches but is just too hittable for high leverage innings at this point. Sure enough, he gave up the lead.  Ray Black went 1.2 shutout innings and Will Smith got the W with 1.1 dominant innings in which he struck out all 4 batters he faced.

*********************************************************************************

Dodgers, D'Backs and Rockies all lost so the Giants are now 5.5 games behind the Bad Guys in 4'th place in the NL West and 5 games behind in the Wild Card race.  Hope this does not dissuade them from trading Cutch if they can get a good return.

*********************************************************************************

Today is Trade Deadline day.  Rumors have the Giants willing to trade Andrew McCutchen with the Indians, Phillies and Yankees reportedly interested.  Cutch is a FA after the season.  The Giants do not want to be stuck with an accepted QO at $18 M for next year so they are not going to get a draft pick for him.  They need to trade him if they can get any decent prospect in return.  Personally I have my heart set on RHP Deivi Garcia, a Yankees farmhand who struck out 12 Augusta Greenjackets last week and has 209 K's in 147.2 IP so far in his minor league career.

Casey Kelly RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K's,
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.61.

Dillon Dobson 1B- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .246.
Kelvin Beltre 3B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .206.
Logan Webb RHP- 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.82.
Frank Rubio RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

Heath Quinn was the leadoff batter in this game.  Not sure what the significance of that is, if anything.

Game Wrap 7/29/2018: Giants 8 Brewers 5

Buster Posey led a 13-hit Giants attack with 4 of his own to lead them to a Win to close out an otherwise disastrous 4-game series with the BrewCrew.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey C- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .290.  Buster had his inside-out swing working to perfection as he peppered the field with basehits.  The biggest was a bases-loaded double in the 3'rd inning that drove in 3 runs.  Buster has been scuffling with a .222 BA over his previous 7 games, but the 4 knocks in this one makes him 7 for 12 over his last 3 games, .321 over his last 7 .290 over his last 15 and .297 over his last 30.  Fun with baseball stats!

Pablo Sandoval 1B- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .248.  Pabs had a great AB in the 5'th inning after flailing at 2 Junior Guerra changeups.  Pabs made the adjustment, shortened up his swing, fought off some nasty pitches and eventually pulled one down the line into he corner for a 2-run triple.  Pabs eventually scored but came out holding a spot just under his left cheek and was diagnosed with a hammy.  Pabs leads the Giants in RBI's since June 1 with 25 so there's another tough injury to deal with.

Gorkys Hernandez LF/RF- 1 for 3, HR(12), BB.  BA= .269.  Gorkys' numbers have been slipping but he drove one out to straightaway CF in the 4'th innings to increase the Giants lead to 5-2.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 4.11.  This would not have been such a good Start with less run support, but he managed to keep the BrewCrew bombers at bay for 6 innings and the W.  Fatigue could become a factor for the Giants young SP's as we head into the dog days of August.

*********************************************************************************

Hey!  The Dodgers lost, so the Giants gained a game in the NL West Standing to put them 6.5 games out of the lead and 6 out in the Wild Card race.

Game Wrap 7/28/2018: Brewers 7 Giants 1

It's usually in retrospect that you can identify when a team hits rock bottom.  I don't know if this game was rock bottom for the Giants, but it seems like a darn good candidate.  The Giants were way out of this one by the time they came to bat in the bottom of the 2'nd inning.  They were dominated in every facet of the game and a pitcher they need for a successful second half, looked broken.  Key Lines:

Nick Hundley C- 1 for 3, HR(9).  BA= .255.  Nick Hundley has been a bright spot for the Giants the last 2 seasons.  Tonight he got the Giants first hit of the game off Jhoulys Chacin.  The only problem with that is it came in the 6'th inning with the score 6-0.  It was the only run the Giants came close to scoring all night.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.23.  It was not an encouraging start for Cueto.  His FB topped out at 89 MPH and looked so weak Kruk and Kuip felt constrained to comment on it and to link it to his time on the DL and the medical opinion to not do Tommy John surgery.  I would be no shock at all if we read tomorrow that Cueto is back on the DL and headed for more tests and medical opinions.  I'll just say this,  if he has a bad UCL, I would vote for TJ ASAP to try to salvage the final years of the contract.  While TJ is no sure thing, the track record of pitchers who undergo it is way better than the ones who try to avoid it or delay it.

Ty Blach LHP- 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 8/0.  ERA= 4.48.  Pretty much what you expect from Ty Blach.  He's a contact pitcher who lives and dies by the laws of BABIP.

Ray Black RHP- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.86.  Black looked as dominant as ever.  He cannot hold a runner to save his life, though, and that cost him an inherited runner scored.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 7.5 games off the pace in the NL West and 6 games behind in the Wild Card race.  It's getting late, folks, really late!

*********************************************************************************

Andrew Suarez tries to be the Stopper tomorrow against Junior Guerra.

Down on the Farm: 7/27/2018

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Iowa Cubs 4-2:

Peter Bourjos CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .360.
Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, HR(21), BB.  BA= .261.
Kelby Tomlinson SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .256.
Tyler Herb RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.23.
Pierce Johnson RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.14.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Reading Fightin' Phils 2-1:

Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 3, BB.   BA= .233.
Conner Menez LHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 3.57.
Dan Slania RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.04.

Conner Menez has definitely found a strikeout pitch as he has 132 in 106.2 IP over 3 levels of play.  He's a guy to keep on your radar for next season.  Big time Sleeper who has gotten almost no attention from prospect watchers.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants beat the Inland Empire 66'ers 6-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .283.
Wander Javier Franco 3B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .272.
Matt Winn C- 2 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .238.
Johneshwy Fargas LF- 1 for 2, HR(6), HBP, SB(35).  BA= .264.
Carlos Sano RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.88.
Trevor Horn RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Trevor Horn was the Giants 38'th round draft pick this year.  I believe he is the first 2018 draftee to reach as high a A+ in the organization and makes a successful debut for the SJ Giants.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Augusta Greenjackets outlasted the Columbia Fireflies 2-1(10 Innings):

Malique Ziegler LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .284.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.61.
Keenan Bartlett RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

2'nd QS in a row for Caleb Baragar with 15 K's and 1 BB in 13 IP.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes erupted for a 14-1 Win over the Everett Aquasox:

Jose Layer CF- 1 for 6, HR(4).  BA= .288.
Kyle McPherson SS/2B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .304.
Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .357.
Joey Bart C- 3 for 4, 2 HR(9), SF.  BA= .338.
Mikey Edie RF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.
Nico Giarratano SS- 1 for 1, HR(3).  BA= .310.
Blake Rivera RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.68.
Solomon Bates RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.27.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.60.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.47.

Great game for padding the stat lines but Joey Bart continues to rake the NWL.  I don't see a reason for him not to spend his August getting a preview of the Cal League for next year or maybe even a tune-up for AA?  Solomon Bates has run hot and cold but this was definitely dominance as 8 of 9 outs were K's.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  Angels destroyed the Giants Black 9-2:

Conner Nurse RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.66.

Giants Black managed just 2 hits in the game.  Conner Nurse is a longterm project who is showing some promise.  He's allowed just 2 R in 14 IP over his last 3 Starts.

*********************************************************************************

Rookie AZL  D'Backs crushed the Giants Orange 16-2:

Fabian Pena C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .298.

As you can imagine from the score, not too many positives in this game.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Mariners topped the Giants 5-4(Completion of Suspended Game July 16, 2018):

Andrew Caraballo DH- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .260.
Willian Suarez RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.40.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants pounded the Mariners 11-1(Regularly Scheduled Game, 7 Innings):

Ghordy Santos DH- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .158.
Jean Pena SS- 1 for 1, BB, SF, HBP.  BA= .248.
Richgelon Juliana CF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .277.
Cesar Gonzalez C- 0 for 2, 2 HBP.  BA= .300.
Sonny Vargas LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.70.

Game Wrap 7/27/2018: Brewers 3 Giants 1

The Giants did not add on to an early 1-0 lead and the Brewers played small ball to scratch out 3 runs in the 6'th, 7'th and 8'th innings off Madison Bumgarner to ruin his Quality Start.  Key Lines:

Alen Hanson(.281), Buster Posey(.282), Brandon Crawford(.286), Gorkys Hernandez(.271)- 2B.  Hanson had one additional hit.  The Giants lone run scored on B2B doubles by Crawford and Posey in the 2'nd inning.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 12/2.  ERA= 3.06.  If you live by the groundball, you die by the groundball.   You'll get a lot of Quality Starts with a line like this, but the BABIP gods and going to make sure they get their share of the house money.  The offense has to do their share.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants back below .500 at 52-53.  They are now 6.5 games behind the Dodgers and in 4'th place in the NL West.  They are 5 games back in the Wild Card race.  The Dodgers, D'Backs and Rockies all won so the D'Backs remain 1.5 games out of the lead with the Rockies in 3'rd place, 2 games out.

*********************************************************************************

Johnny Cueto tries to get the Giants on the winning side of the ledger again today facing Jhoulys Chacin.

*********************************************************************************

If the Giants are in a wait and see mode with the trade deadline approaching, the answer to their question is they are rapidly dropping out of this race and need to be thinking sell.  I get that they don't want to dismantle the team and go on a longterm rebuild, but what about next year?   They do have several players who are not under contract who could bring at least a modest return in trade.

Game Wrap 7/26/2018: Brewers 7 Giants 5

An exhausted bullpen, some BABIP bad luck and a bad strike zone by the home plate ump all contributed to losing a winnable game.   Key Lines:

Chase d'Arnaud 2B- 1 for 4, SF.  BA= .286.  Another injury fill-in player who contributes.

Austin Slater 1B- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .300.  With Brandon Belt hitting the DL, Slater got the start at 1B agains the lefty Wade Miley.  He showed good plate discipline in drawing 2 walks which led to 2 runs score.  He also took a bad hop off the chin in the 8'th inning to start a 2-run Brewers rally.  That ball was ruled a hit.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .286.  Buster has become pretty much a singles hitter with an OBP of .394.  He was in a 3 for 24 slump coming into this game.  Buster made a rare and understandable baserunning mistake in the 4'th inning as the lead runner in a 1'st and 2'nd with no outs situation.  He read basehit on a line drive by Brandon Crawford that was caught by Christian Yelich who threw to 1B too late but the first baseman had plenty of time to throw on to 2B to double up Buster.

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.  Longoria returns from the DL with a 2-hit night.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.  Crawford is hitting just .181 for the month of July, but is now 4 for 12 over his last 3 games.   In addition to the 2 hits, he hit another ball hard that was caught in RF in the 4'th inning.

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .286.  Duggar is starting to look pretty comfortable at the plate and so far is hitting lefties better than righties.  He contributed to 2 Giants rallies in this game.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's GO/AO= 9/2.  ERA= 2.75.  This should have been the lead story of the night as Young Dereck pitches his 5'th consecutive Quality Start.  He had a scoreless 3-inning relief appearance just before the All-Star Break to boot.  No matter what happens to the rest of this season, witnessing Young Dereck's rookie season has been a joy.  Up to now, he has been neutral on ground ball tendency, but had the BrewCrew killing worms in this game.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.76.  Dominant inning for Moronta who had a 98 MPH FB with command paired up with a wicked hard breaking ball.  It looked like more of a hard curveball than a slider.

Mark Melancon RHP- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 3.57.  Melancon had some pretty serious bad BABIP luck as the first hit was the bad bounce off Slater's chin.   The second found a hole where Brandon Crawford was standing before he moved to cover 2B on a hit and run.  Gotta say, though, all 4 balls were hit hard and Melancon still does not seem fully healthy out there.

Chris Stratton RHP- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.14.  Stratton got out of Melancon's bases-loaded jam with a dominant strikeout of Eric Thames in the 8'th inning but let the game get away in the 9'th turning a 4-3 deficit into 7-3 which the Giants 9'th inning rally could not overcome.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 5.5 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers.  The D'Backs also lost to drop 1.5 games behind while the idle Rockies dropped 2 games back.

Peter Bourjos CF- 2 for 4, BB.   BA= .350.
Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .299.
Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .295.
Gregor Blanco RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .235.
Orlando Calixte SS- 2 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .280.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 5/2.  ERA= 1.68.

Evan Longoria played all 9 innings at 3B and went 0 for 4 with a BB.  Chris Stratton was a late scratch for unknown reason so this was a bullpen game with Josh Osich getting the Start and allowing a run in 2 IP.  Orlando Calixte had the Cats only XBH out of 11 hits.  Tyler Rogers goes 3 shutout innings and yeah, I'd like to see if his stuff plays in the majors.

Game Wrap 7/25/2018: Mariners 3 Giants 2

The Giants played their 4'th 1-run game in a row and lost their 3'rd out of those 4.  The losses have all followed a similar script:  Fall behind early, struggle at the plate, scratch out a comeback to get even only to lose late.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3.  BA= .278.  Belt started the Giants 2-run rally in the 7'th inning with a hard hit ball that caromed off the glove of 1B Ryan Healy.  He stumbled slightly as he hit the bag and brushed against Mariners SP Mike Leake.  The report on sfgiants.com quotes Belt as saying he does not know exactly when the hyperextension occurred but it looked to me like Belt was limping as he started to walk to 2B on the overthrow.  Belt is currently day-to-day but will be evaluated tomorrow.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .284.  The Giants scored both their runs in the 7'th inning.  Crawford drove in the first run on a double to plate Chase d'Arnaud who pinch ran for Belt.

Hunter Pence LF- Pence continued his hot hitting with a double the 7'th to drive in Brandon Crawford.

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/4.  ERA= 3.92.  Holland gave up single runs in the first 2 innings then settled down to record his 4'th Quality Start out of his last 5 since June 20.  He has also made 4 relief appearances in that time.  His ERA is 2.74 in 23 IP with 30 K's and 6 BB's.  He had a 2.70 ERA in 26.2 IP in June.

Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.26.  Black is unscored upon in 6 IP over 6 appearances since he gave up 3 runs in 0.1 IP in his MLB debut on July 8.

Tony Watson LHP- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.17.  Watson took the Loss after walking the first batter Heredia who advanced to 2B on a groundout by Dee Gordon in which Gordon was initially called Safe but later out on Replay Review.  Sam Dyson came in and gave up the game-winning hit to Jean Segura who singled to drive in Heredia.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodger lost to the Phillies 7-3 and the D'Backs dropped one to the Cubs 2-1 while the Rockies topped the Astros 3-2.  That leaves the Dodgers in first place by 0.5 games over the D'Backs, 1.5 games over the Rockies and 4.5 games over the Giants in the NL West.

The Giants return home to start a series against the Brewers with Young Dereck Rodriguez facing lefty Wade Miley tomorrow evening.

Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.94.

Jalen Miller is hitting .287 over his last 10 games but just .241 for the month of July.  Another dominant(though limited) Start for Logan Webb.  A high walk rate is the only major blemish on his pitching line.  He has 68 K's and 34 BB's in 69.2 IP, on the season.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Charleston River Dogs defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1:

Ismael Munguia LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .367.

DSL  Colorado crushed the Giants 12-1:

Game Wrap 7/24/2018: Giants 4 Mariners 3

After trading single runs with the Mariners in the 3'rd, 4'th and 6'th innings, the Giants took a lead in the top of the 9'th inning on a throwing miscue by Dee Gordon.  Will Smith shut it down in the bottom of the inning to preserve the Win.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .262.  Duggar singled at the end of a very tough AB against Mariners Closer, Edwin Diaz, with 1 out in the 9'th inning.  He took 2B on a groundout by Alen Hanson.  Pablo Sandoval then hit a bouncer to the right side that Dee Gordon got a late jump on.  Duggar came around to score when Gordon inadvisedly threw wildly trying to nab Pabs who was absolutely booking it down the line.

Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .225.  Kelby led off the scoring after a triple to the Safeco Field version of Triples Alley in L-CF.  He came home on Chase d'Arnaud's single.

Austin Slater LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .319.  Slater did not figure in the scoring, but saved a run when he unleashed a throw just under 100 MPH to nail Kyle Seager at the plate.

Hunter Pence DH- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .228.  Pence showed he still has some toonder in the bat with a line drive HR that went an estimated 445 ft.  I don't recall if it was the 3'rd or 4'th longest HR by a Giants hitter this year, but it was a monster.  Pence is hitting .368 over his last 7 games.  He is also hitting .364(16 for 44) since his BA reached a nadir of .181 on June 19.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 5.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 3.99.  A bit of an uneven performance by Suarez.  Austin Slater saved him a run in the 4'th inning with his epic throw.  Then in the 6'th, Suarez gave up a 2-0ut walk to Denard Span and Boch brought in Reyes Moronta who gave up a walk and a single to allow the inherited runner to score which gave Suarez his final line for the night, 1 out short of a QS.

Sam Dyson/Tony Watson/Will Smith- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  The lads were lights out over the last 3 innings with Smith recording his 4'th Save.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading Dodgers lost to the Phillies 7-4 so the 4'th place Giants gained a game and are now 4.5 games out of the lead.  The D'Backs beat the Cubs 5-1 to close to 0.5 games out in 2'nd place.  The Rockies lost to the Astros 8-2 to remain 2.5 games behind the leaders in 3'rd place.

Game Wrap 7/22/2018: A's 6 Giants 5 (10 Innings)

For the second game in a row, the Giants offense fought back from a deficit and even took the lead in the 8'th inning only to blow the lead and the game in extra-innings.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 5, HR(10).  BA= .259.  It looked like Cutch would hit the game-winning HR when he went deep of Yusmeiro Petit in the 8'th inning, but it was not to be as Mark Melancon blew the Save in the bottom of the inning.

Austin Slater LF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .326.  OK, now remind me why Austin Slater is sitting most of the time again?  Free Austin Slater!

Pablo Sandoval PH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .254.  The Giants finally got to Lou Trivino and it was Pabs PH 2-run double that was the big blow.

Alen Hanson PH/2B- 1 for 2, SB(5).  Kelby Tomlinson started the game agains the lefty Sean Manaea.  Hanson PH for him against the RH monster, Trivino, and delivered a run-scoring single to cap off the 3-run rally in the 7'th inning.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/3, 3 HR.  ERA= 2.76.  Kind of a mixed bag here.  Kudos for going 7 innings and sparing the bullpen, but not exactly a dominant performance.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.65.  Nope, not ready to close out games just yet!

Jeurys Familia RHP(A's)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.74.  Can't say I'd want Jeurys Familia in a Giants uniform, but here's the point:  The A's bullpen has been arguably the strongest part of their team this season so what to they do?  They get out ahead of the Trade Deadline and make it even stronger.  That was the difference in this ballgame, right there.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading Dodger destroyed the Brewers 11-2 so the Giants fall 5 games out of the lead with the Loss.  The D'Backs topped the Rockies 6-1 to move back into 2'nd place, but remained 1.5 games behind the Dodgers.  The Rockies are in 3'rd place, 2 games behind.

The Wild Card picture isn't much better with the Giants 4.5 games behind with 5 teams ahead of them for the final spot.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get Monday off before starting an interleague series in Seattle on Tuesday with Andrew Suarez facing James Paxton.

*********************************************************************************

I have to agree with Covechatter here.  If the Giants are going to be buyers at the trade deadline, they better get their rear in gear and get something done.  Also agree that it's tough to figure out what they need and what will make a difference.  A mashing LF, #3 SP and dominant reliever would be on my wish list.  I think they need to fill at least 2 of those 3 to be serious playoff contenders.

It is probably not realistic to think they will accomplish that and stay below the CBT threshold.  If they think they have a serious shot, then they probably need to blow past the threshold and figure they will build from within in the future.

If they aren't willing to do that, they should probably try to get some prospects for the likes of Andrew McCutchen, Derek Holland, Sam Dyson, Will Smith and Tony Watson.  If they can move a bad contract or two by selling off any and all prospects not named Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos or Marco Luciano, then get that done too!

Game Wrap 7/21/2018: A's 4 Giants 3 (11 Innings)

The Giants fought back from a 5'th inning meltdown by Madison Bumgarner to tie the game in the 9'th inning, only to lose it in the 11'th.  Key lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 4, HR(14), BB.  BA= .287.  Ryder Jones was rewarded for his mammoth HR in the first game of the series with a trip back to Sacramento.  Belt returned from a 1 game paternity leave with a HR of his own, a towering drive that reached an apex of 131 feet(at least I think that's what was reported on the TV broadcast).  That gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the 4'th inning which lasted until the bottom of the 5'th.

Hunter Pence DH- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .228.  Pence singled in a run in the 7'th to narrow the deficit to 3-2.  In the 9'th inning the Giants were down to their last out when Alen Hanson reached 1B on a strikeout and WP.  Pence then poked a ball down the 1B line that appeared to carom off something and head for the Giants bullpen.  Hanson scored all the way from 1B.  On the play, Steven Piscotty crashed through a chair that Mark Melancon was trying to pull out of the way.  The A's claimed interference, but the run stood after a replay review to send the game into extra innings.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.19.  Bumgarner cruised through the first 3 innings.  He was a bit shaky in the 4'th and then the wheels fell off in the 5'th in which he gave up a walk, bloop single and 3 more walks which gave the A's 2 runs.  He left the game with no outs and the bases loaded for Sam Dyson to clean up.  Dyson limited the damage by getting a GIDP which drove in a 3'rd run and then a harmless flyout to end the inning.

*********************************************************************************

The NL West leading Dodgers lost to the Brewers 4-2, so the Giants remain 4 games behind in 4'th place.  The Rockies topped the D'Backs to move into 2'nd place, 1 game behind he Dodgers while the D'Backs dropped to 1.5 games back in 3'rd place.

Nice game for padding the stat lines.  Frankie Tostado might be ready for bigger challenges.  He has struck out just 2 time in 49 PA over his last 10 games.  He is hitting .432 in that span.  He is 20 yo.  Drafted last year out of Oxnard CC but did not get in any games in 2017.

Game Wrap 7/20/2018: Giants 5 A's 1

Solo dingers by Ryder Jones and Pablo Sandoval were the big hits to back a Quality Start by Young Dereck Rodriguez as the Giants started the second have strong out of the gate.  Key Lines:

Andrew McCutchen RF- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .262.  A strong second half by Cutch would go a long way toward the Giants making the postseason.

Pablo Sandoval 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .256.  With Brandon Belt on Paternity Leave, Pabs slides over to 1B with Ryder Jones taking 3B.  Pabs has a big game with a HR to RF and a double in the top of the 9'th on a pitch that was up and out of the strike zone.  He was left stranded after the double.

Ryder Jones 3B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.  Ryder Jones has been quietly having a strong season for Sacramento.  He's getting a look for a few games with Belt out.  His HR put the Giants ahead for good 2-1 and was a monster shot down the line that clanged off the RF foul pole.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.72.  Young Dereck was brilliant again with his 6'th QS out of 9.  He's had 2 other non-starting appearances.  One of several very pleasant surprises for Giants fans this season.

*********************************************************************************

Despit the Win, the Giants remained in 4'th place, 4 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers who topped the Brewers 6-4.  The D'Backs and Rockies are 1 and 2.5 games behind the Dodgers respectively pending the outcome of their game.

DrB's 2018 Giants Midseason Top 20 Prospects

Here is the final list. I am not going to go into the kind of detail as in the offseason with the Top 50's. You can look up the bios and stats for yourself on either Fangraphs or milb.com.  I'll just list the top 20 with a few comments.  As always, please don't get too hung up on the exact order.  In any organization, once you get past the top 2 or 3, they all have about the same odds, slim, of having a significant MLB career.

1.  Joey Bart C.  You never know what the future holds.  We have to make a judgement based on currently available information.   Per Covechatter, the odds of success for a top draft pick are greatest for college hitters.  Early returns on Bart have him living up to every expectation for a #2 overall draft pick.  I don't recall when a top Giants draft pick showed this kind of power out of the gate. That's why he's #1 on this list.

2.  Heliot Ramos OF.  Ramos' stock has not fallen IMO.  He is quite young for the SAL, a very tough hitting environment.  So far, he's performing better there than prior Giants HS draftees Chrisian Arroyo and Ryder Jones.  It's just that Bart has a comparable ceiling and is in position to reach it a lot faster than Ramos.

3.  Marco Luciano SS/OF.  Luciano was ranked by most analysts as the #3 international prospect for the current cycle.  The Giants were long rumored to be in on him and they got him signed just as expected.  Massive strength in a compact but athletic frame.  The frame is comparable to Gustavo Cabrera and Heliot Ramos which just might be a Giants "type".  Can't wait to see this kid play, but we'll have to wait until next summer to see his name in boxscores.  Rounds out a clear top tier of 3 among Giants prospects.

4.  Steven Duggar OF.  Athletic rangy OF reputed to be a plus defender in CF, a premium position.  Hit 27 doubles in AAA in 300 AB's.  Now hitting doubles in a Giants uniform.  Has been compared favorably to Steve Finley.

5.  Ray Black RHP.  Very old to be a prospect but has had to fight his way back from numerous injuries over his career.   When healthy, he has electric stuff with triple digit velocity.  Had a rough MLB debut but in his next 3 appearances was all but unhittable.

6.  Sean Hjelle RHP.  Giants 2'nd round pick in he 2018 draft.  They had been rumored to have him targeted for that slot and got their man.  Feels like a first round talent.  At 6'11", he'll be tied with Jon Rauch for tallest player in MLB history if he makes it which seems likely.  Rough pro debut but has been excellent since against appropriate competition in the NWL.

7.  Melvin Adon RHP.  Doesn't have the most impressive numbers for SJ Giants but SP's who can hit triple digits with regularity and hold upper 90's velocity deep into games don't grow on trees.  Still time to iron out the command kinks.

8.  Jacob Gonzalez 3B.  Has held his own at the plate in a very tough environment.  Has hit a little better than Heliot Ramos but questions remain about what position he is eventually going to play, so gets ranked lower.

9.  Gregory Santos RHP.  Very young, high ceiling pitcher who is more than holding his own against older competition in the NWL.  Has an advanced repertoire for his age which could help him move fast.

10.  Chris Shaw LF.  A bit disappointing season for Shaw who is the Giants premiere power hitting prospect, or at least he was until they drafted Joey Bart.  Strikeouts have held him back this season but he is still showing the light-tower power.  Still a lot of questions about whether he can play an adequate defensive LF or even 1B.

11.  Ryan Howard SS.  So far, Ryan Howard is meeting the challenge of hitting in the AA EL, although the grind of the season may be starting to wear him down.  Ceiling is probably a utility IF, but he's still playing mostly SS in the minors.

12.  Heath Quinn OF.  He was hampered by injuries last year and has missed some time this year too.  The difference is he is mashing the ball for San Jose this year.  The bat seems real enough.  He just needs to stay healthy and be able to handle defensive duties at least in LF.

13.  Jalen Miller 2B.  Miller is repeating the Cal League but he's still young for the league at age 21.  He's hitting much better this year and has sustained it deep into the season.

14.  Logan Webb RHP.  Today's scouting report posted on Covechatter's Twitter feed is FB 94-96 MPH with a sharp breaking ball and solid changeup.  Giants are severely limiting his innings this season post TJ.  Can't wait to see him next season, hopefully with AA Richmond.

15.  Seth Corry LHP.  3'rd round draft pick in 2017.  Ran hot and cold last with with bouts of severe wildness.  He's been more steady this year while repeating rookie ball.  Still seems to have a high ceiling and time to reach it.

16.  Alexander Canario OF.  Athletic and speedy enough to play CF and steal bases.  The bat seems to be for real with some power potential.  Sneaks ahead of Sandro Fabian due to his projected ability to stick in CF.

17.  Sandro Fabian OF.  Has had his struggles in the Cal League where he is playing against mostly much older competition.  Will likely take the Jalen Miller route and repeat next year where I expect him to mash.

18.  Diego Rincones OF.  Underrated hitting prospect.  The bat seems real.  Raking the NWL. It's going to have to play in a corner OF role.

19.  Shaun Anderson RHP.  Workhorse RHP with pedestrian numbers in the EL.   Had a mostly successful AAA debut tonight which will be the big test for him.  If you can pitch in the PCL, you can pitch in the major leagues.

20.  Jose Marte RHP.  High ceiling arm who has been a bit uneven for low A Augusta this season.

Manny Parra LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.99.

Obviously a game to pad the old stat line but maybe this is what will shake Mac Williamson out of his funk.  This gives him a 4 game hit streak in which he is 6 for 14. Casey Kelly has turned in dominant Starts before but has had trouble with consistency. This was against about as tough a AAA lineup as you will find.

Doug Still LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.84.

I know there is no reason to rush Joey Bart, but my goodness!  He seems way too good for the NWL. I'm thinking Cal League would be a nice challenge for him over the last month of the minor league season.  Doug Still has 29 K's against 7 BB in 21.2 IP with 3 different teams this season.  He was the Giants 11'th round draft pick in 2017 but did not make his pro debut until this season.

This might be Tyler Beede's best appearance of the season so far.

Jake Wong's 3'rd pro appearance goes much better than his first 2.  Jose Layer and Joey Bart continue to mash the NWL.  Is it too much to ask to see Bart get a month preview of 2019 with San Jose Giants in August?
