Game Wrap 4/30/2019: Dodgers 10 Giants 3

A 6-run Dodgers outburst against Ty Blach buried the Giants.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey C- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .250.   Buster is hitting .346 over his last 7 games.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .237.  Belt is hitting .317 over his last 7 games.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 4.08.  Pomeranz sailed through the first 3 innings but started the 4'th by walking leadoff hitter, Justin Turner.  After a Cody Bellinger groundball single, David Freeze hit a 3-run dinger.  Pomeranz retired the next 3 batters to get out of the inning but did not go back out for the 5'th.

Ty Blach LHP- 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 18.90.  So Blach was brought up as a bridge from Derek Holland going on the DL to Tyler Beede starting this Friday.  The Giants were likely looking at his record against the Dodgers, but all that SSS goodness went poof!  He has options so they will probably just option him back an keep him in the organization for depth, but man, if you can't trust him against the Dodgers, I'm not sure what other use he has.  I could see this appearance being his last at the MLB level for the Giants.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the last place Giants 7 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers and 5 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to get some traction on his season and get the Giants a series win in the rubber match tomorrow night facing Hyun-Jin Ryu.

*********************************************************************************

Good news on the injury front as Steven Duggar was in the starting lineup and Johnny Cueto threw his first bullpen session since undergoing TJ surgery last season.

Down on the Farm: 4/28/2019

AAA  Albuquerque Isotopes topped the Sacramento River Cats 3-2:

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 3, HR(4), HBP.  BA= .319.
Henry Ramos RF- 1 for 3, BB, Assist(2B).  BA= .257.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .224.
Williams Jerez LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.77.

Seems like Mike Gerber could get a shot with a team starting Gerardo Parra and Yangervis Solarte as it's corner OF's.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 3-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(5), BB.  BA= .275.
Heath Quinn RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .177.
Johneshwy Fargas CF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .207.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 2.00.
Conor Overton RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.92.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.13.

Jalen Miller his showing some resilience in bouncing back from a BA nadir of .242 3 days ago. Logan Webb has 19 K's and just 1 BB in 11 IP over his last 2 Starts.  On top of that, he has a GO/AO= 2.57 on the season, a dominant groundball tendency.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants beat the Inland Empire 66'ers 3-1:

Jean Angomas RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .233.
Logan Baldwin CF- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .260.
Chris Corbett C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .368.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 6.88.
Sandro Cabrera LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Aaron Phillips first 4 Starts of the season were rough, but he dominated last night.  The 9 K's left him with 22 K's in 17 IP on the season. Sandro Cabrera has a positive season debut.

A  Augusta Greenjackets and the SAL were idle.

Game Wrap 4/28/2019: Giants 3 Dodgers 2

Evan Longoria's bases loaded, bases clearing double in the 7'th inning brought the Giants from behind to beat the Hated Ones in game one of a 3-game series in Oracle Park.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, BB.   Not sure why Boch thought it was a good idea to bat Panik leadoff, but hey, 3 times on base in 4 PA's is what it's all about.  It worked for this game.

Yangervis Solarte LF- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .237.  With Duggar still not starting and a RHP for the Dodgers, Parra moved to RF and Solarte got the call for LF.  Hey, that worked out too!

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .234.  The collective top of the Giants lineup has been downright terrible.  Tonight the top 3 got on base 7 times in 14 PA's.  That didn't seem to matter as the middle of the order couldn't seem to drive anybody in until Longoria cleared the bases in the 7'th.

Evan Longoria PH/3B- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .210.  Pablo Sandoval got the start at 3B for the second game in a row.  I am not sure why Longo PH for him for his 3'rd AB, but maybe Longo got the message because when he came up with the bases loaded in the 7'th, he cleared them with a double into the LF corner.  Those 3 runs overcame a 2-0 deficit and put the Giants on top to stay.

Steven Duggar PH/RF- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .229.  Encouraging sign the Duggar is going to be alright from the wrist injury.  Hate to give up Triples Alley.  I am a big fan of that quirk.  Gotta get those bullpen mounds out of he field of play!

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.53.  Boch didn't keep Shark in for too long and it nearly blew up in his face as Tony Watson only retired 1 batter in the 6'th and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.38.  Dyson was other hero of the game getting out of Watson's jam with a line-out DP then pitching a scoreless 7'th.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(7).  ERA= 3.38.  Smith's ERA suffered when he was used in a mop-up situation yesterday, but he's been terrific in Save Ops.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the last place Giants gain a game on the NL West leading Dodgers for a 6 game deficit.  They remain 4 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Drew Pomeranz coming off his best Start since 2017 tries to clinch a series win tomorrow night against Walker Buehler who has had his struggles so far this season and comes in with a 5.25 ERA.

*********************************************************************************

Late Addendum:  LHP Derek Holland went on the IL with a bruised finger.  Ty Blach was called up to take his place but word is Tyler Beede will be called up when Holland's next Start is due.

Down on the Farm: 4/28/2019

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers topped the Sacramento River Cats 4-3:

Austin Slater 2B- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .286.
Steven Vogt C- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .231.
Zach Green 3B- 1 for 2, HR(5), 2 BB.  BA= .297.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 9 K's, GO/AO= 4/0.  ERA= 4.01.
Pat Venditte RHP/LHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.93.

Austin Slater seems to have taken Farhan's memo about plate discipline to heart.  OBP= .467.  A QS with dominant peripheral numbers from Shaun Anderson who has had 4 good Starts out of 5.

*********************************************************************************

AA Altoona Curve stopped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-6:

Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .268.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .258.
Ryan Howard SS- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .197.
Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .169.
Hamlet Marte C- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .154.

Jalen Miller had been slumping(along with most of the Squirrels hitters).  Hopefully this breaks out of that.  Heath Quinn is 5 for 13 over his last 3 games.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 3-2:

Bryce Johnson CF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(5).  BA= .202.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

Matt Frisbee gets the promo from Augusta.  Probably pitches well enough to get another look.  Bad news for Giants prospect watchers:  Heliot Ramos will miss 4-6 weeks with a LCL knee sprain.  Ugh!

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-0:

Ismael Munguia LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .347.
Aaron Bond RF- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .194.
Wander Franco 2B- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .163.
Jesus Ozoria RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 0.00.
Solomon Bates RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 4.50.

In case you had forgotten, Jesus Ozoria is the 20 yo pitching prospect acquired when Farhan flipped C Tom Murphy to the Mariners at the end of spring training.  Ozoria makes his full season debut after 2 years in the DSL, an aggressive placement.

Game Wrap 4/28/2019: Yankees 11 Giants 5

The Giants had to feel pretty good going into this series against a depleted Yankees team at home in Oracle Park which does not exactly play into the Yankees' strengths.  The Giants were coming off a 3 game win streak on an East Coast road trip.  All signs pointed to a potential series win.  Instead, as we've seen repeatedly over the past 3 or 4 seasons, they faceplanted.  The final scores might not look so bad, but make no mistake.  These games were not nearly as close as the final scores make them look. The beatdown today was the worst of the 3 as the Yanks scored 6 unanswered runs in the first 3 innings and kept adding on as the game went along.  Once again the Giants comeback was way too little, too late.  Key Lines:

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .295.  Pabs clearly should be playing every day but the Giants self-created dilemma is they are committed to underperforming players at the positions Pabs can play. Giants may be forced to rethink those commitments.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .196.  How can a guy who has done as many good things as Pillar be hitting under the Mendoza Line?

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 3 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.35.  There was some shoddy fielding, but the 4 BB's is all you need to know about this Start.

*********************************************************************************

With the Loss, the cellar-dwelling Giants drop 7 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers but remain just 4.5 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

It doesn't get any easier as the Dodgers, who are arguably better than the Yankees right now, come to town with Jeff Samardzija trying to stop the bleeding against Kenta Maeda tomorrow evening.

Down on the Farm: 4/27/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats topped the Tacoma Rainiers 4-3:

Mike Yastrzemski CF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .255.
Mac Williamson RF- 3 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .397.
Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 1.99.

OK.  Who'd you rather, Mac or Tyler Austin? Tyler Beede still looking good.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels pounded the Altoona Curve 8-5:

Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .269.
Brock Stassi 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .317.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .356.
Chase Johnson RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.23.
Melvin Adon RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.53.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 6.75.

Brock Stassi is a 29 yo non-prospect.  Hopefully Jonah Arenado is more than a one month wonder.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 5-3:

Brandon Van Horn 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .429.
Logan Baldwin RF- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .232.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.16.

*********************************************************************************

A  Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1(7 Innings, Game 1 of DH):

Wander Franco 3B- 2 for 2, BB.  BA= .163.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.57.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-2(7 Innings, Game 2 of DH):

Jose Layer CF- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA- .194.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .241.
Ismael Munguia DH- 3 for 3, 2B.  BA= .343.
Blake Rivera RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.60.
Preston White RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.00.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 0.00.

Jesus Tona has pitched 10 scoreless frames this season with 16 K's and 4 BB's.

Game Wrap 4/27/2019: Yankees 6 Giants 4

The Giants followed a familiar script to defeat as they fell behind early and the comeback was too little, too late.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .280.  Austin gets his first start in LF which is a step in the right direction.  So far he's hit for a good average and an ability to take a walk but just 1 XBH(a double) out of 7 hits in a very SSS.

Yangervis Solarte 2B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .235.   Solarte's 3-run shot finally got the Giants on the board in the 9'th inning, but they still had a 3-run deficit. Solarte has started the last 2 games against LHP's.  The HR came against RHP Luis Cessa.  Should he just be the starter?

Eric Kratz PH- 1 for 1, HR(1).  BA= .167.  Kratz runs into one once in awhile.

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 6 K.  ERA= 5.34.  Holland was a gamer until Gary Sanchez unloaded the longest grand slam HR of the Statcast era(467 ft) in the 5'th inning.

Trevor Gott RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.80.  Gott has been a nice pick up eating innings in relief.

Travis Bergen LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.40.  Bergen has been effective in spots but is mostly a mop-up option right now.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss leaves the Giants 5.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West pending the outcome of the LA/Pittsburgh game in progress.  The Giants sit 5 games behind in the Wild Card race.

*********************************************************************************

Dereck Rodriguez tries to stave off a sweep tomorrow against RHP Domingo German.

Down on the Farm: 4/26/2019

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers buried the Sacramento River Cats 5-0:

Austin Slater 1B- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .300.
Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .323.
Steven Vogt C- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .244.
Donovan Solano 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .373.
Yoanys Quiala RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 4.91.

Mike Gerber had the only XBH of the game for the 'Cats.  Mac DNP.

*********************************************************************************

AA Altoona Curve wiped out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-0:

Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .140.
Sam Wolff RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.29.

5 of the 8 position players in the Squirrels lineup sport sub-Mendoza BA's.  Jalen Miller is slumping to a .246 BA.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports defeated the San Jose Giants 4-2:

Bryce Johnson RF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .208.
Brandon Van Horn SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.
Orlando Garcia 3B- 2 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .250.
John Gavin LHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.77.
Olbis Parra RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.54.

SJ should be featuring the top 2 prospects in the Giants organization, but they are both on the IL.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Delmarva Shorebirds postponed.

Game Wrap 4/26/2019: Yankees 7 Giants 3

Madison Bumgarner faced a Yankees lineup depleted by injuries to their heavy hitters....and it didn't go well.  Bummy just never quite found his groove and ended up grooving some pitches and the remaining Yankees hitters were good enough to take advantage.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin 1B/LF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .286.  If Tyler Austin is the RH bopper Farhan and Bochy want, hopefully the move to LF later in the game is a sign he about ready to start out there, because playing him at 1B with Belt in LF weakens both positions.  Austin came up with the Yankees so he's probably excited to be playing against them.

Buster Posey C- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .234.  Buster drove in the Giants first run with a Sac Fly to RF in the first inning.  He later smoked a hooking liner down the line for an RBI double and scored on Solarte's single against a fading James Paxton in the 6'th.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 5.2 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.30.  The Giants need Bumgarner to pitch like an ace to have any chance of remaining competitive.  They also need him to pitch well if they aren't competitive to get a strong return for him in a midseason trade.  Since the Yankees are a prime potential midseason trade partner, this game was a double negative in case the Yankees are already thinking about their midseason trade game plan.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss dropped the Giants 5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 4 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Derek Holland will face another lefty, JA Happ, today in a bid to even the series.

Down on the Farm: 4/25/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats topped the Tacoma Rainiers 8-2:

Mac Williamson LF- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .370.
Michael Reed RF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(2).  BA= .245.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 4, HR(4), BB.  BA= .208.
Donovan Solano 3B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .364.
Breyvic Valera 2B- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .288.
Enderson Franco RHP- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.96.

Mac keeps rolling.  Seems pretty obvious he would be both an immediate and future upgrade to LF for the Giants.

*********************************************************************************

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

*********************************************************************************

A+ Modesto Nuts pounded the Sacramento River Cats 9-5:

Bryce Johnson RF- 1 for 5, HR(1).   BA= .203.
Jean Angomas LF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .232.
Logan Baldwin CF- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .213.
Camilo Doval RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.20.

*********************************************************************************

A  Delmarva Shorebirds edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 4-3:

Ismael Munguia LF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .317.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .364.
Seth Corry LHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.26.
Keaton Winn RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.65.

The obvious big story from the first month in Augusta is Frankie Tostado just destroying the SAL.  Stay hot, Frankie!

Thursday, April 25, 2019

Down on the Farm: 4/24/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats topped the Tacoma Rainiers 4-1:

Mac Williamson DH-1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .327.
Austin Slater 2B- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(1), SB(2).  BA= .313.
Breyvic Valera SS/2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .271.
Ty Blach LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 9/1.  ERA= 4.34.

Some familiar names here.  I hear the Giants could use a good RH hitting LF.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-2:

Conner Menez LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.   ERA= 1.31.

Menez has 28 K's and 6 BB's in 20.2 IP on the season.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Modesto Nuts held off the San Jose Giants 8-7:

Kyle McPherson 2B- 1 for 4, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .286.
Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 2, 2B, SF, HBP.  BA= .270.
John Riley C/3B- 2 for 4, BB. BA=.277.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .179.
Gio Brusa DH- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .160.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.63.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

Giants scored the last 4 runs of the game, but came up just short. Per SJ website, Heliot Ramos was lifted for a PR after his double with an apparent leg injury.  Ugh!

*********************************************************************************

A  Hickory Crawdads outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 5-4:

Ismael Munguia CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .317.
Shane Matheny SS- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(4), BB.  BA= .300.
Diego Rincones LF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .269.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .339.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB, SF.  BA= .260.
Jake Wong RHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.78.

Game Wrap 4/24/2019: Giants 4 Blue Jays 0

It should be an ecstatic flight home from Toronto for the Giants who closed out their first east coast road trip with a 3-game win streak which enabled them to break even for the 8 game trip.  Drew Pomeranz had his best Start as a Giant and the hitters backed him with some key hits.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey C- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .230.  Word going in was Pablo Sandoval would DH one game of the series and Buster Posey the other.  Apparently Buster is feeling good these days and ended up catching both games.  Oh, and Pablo's hitting might have had something to with it too!  At any rate, Buster was in the middle of 2 add-on runs in the 6'th inning when he doubled in Gerardo Parra then came home on Evan Longoria's double.  Both doubles went to CF.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .222.  Belt got the Giants on the board in the 4'th driving in Steven Duggar from 2B with a ground rule double.

Pablo Sandoval DH- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .333.  How can Bruce Bochy find more playing time for Pablo?  I've been generally against the idea of Brandon Belt moving to LF, but I might be persuaded if it's to make room for Pabs at 1B.  Stay hot, Pablo!  Hey, maybe Pabs could play LF until they need a defensive replacement?

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 3.65.  Pomeranz' best start as a Giant, by far.  Giants have won 3 of the 5 games he has started.  Last time he pitched at least 6 shutout innings was Sept 19, 2017.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.45.  Moronta set down the 4, 5 and 6 spots in the BJ's order for a clean inning.

Trevor Gott RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.  It wasn't a Save situation so Gott gave the bullpen a rest by pitching 2 shut down innings.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers lost to the Cubs so the Giants deficit in the NL West is just 3.5 games which they share with the Rockies.  They are 3 games off the Wild Card pace.  Hey!  Who says this team can't compete and needs to be torn down?  I will LMAO when Farhan buys at the deadline!  The California Dream is alive!

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get a day off at home before Madison Bumgarner opens a weekend series with the Yankees against James Paxton.

Down on the Farm: 4/23/2019

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .275.
Heath Quinn RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .116.
Hamlet Marte C- 2 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .161.
Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 2.14.

Just one XBH out of 7 hits for the Squirrels.  Only 3 out of 8 position players in the starting lineup, Miller, Chris Shaw and Jonah Arenado, hitting above the Mendoza Line.  Dominant 5 innings from Logan Webb.  He not only has 21 K's in 21 IP, he is putting up dominant groundball numbers with a GO/AO on the season of 2.50.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Modesto Nuts pelted the San Jose Giants 9-4:

Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 3, Sac.  BA= .288.
John Riley DH- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .256.
Jean Angomas LF- 0 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .215.

*********************************************************************************

A Hickory Crawdads edged out the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2:

Shane Matheny SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .286.
Aaron Bond RF- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .228.
Diego Rincones LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, Assist(home).  BA= .242.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.81
Norwith Gudino RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.96.

Game Wrap 4/23/2019: Giants 7 Blue Jays 6

The Giants broke out the long ball with 4 solo shots and the Giants held off a late charge by the Blue Jays for a much needed win on the road.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .215.  Belt's Blast hit off the advertising screen on the facing of the 3'rd deck leaving part of it broken. He's not hitting for average so far but is on a pace for 30 dingers.  Now he just needs to stay healthy!

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .221.  Longo's Long Ball landed up on the Batter's Eye screen in straightaway CF.

Pablo Sandoval DH- 3 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .344.  Sandoval is the only member of the starting lineup with a BA over .229 on the season.  Can he play 2B?  LF?  Or, maybe if Belt is going to slider over to LF for Tyler Austin, why not put Pabs at 1B instead?

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .197.  Great to see Panik not only get 2 hits but both of them are for extra bases.  Maybe this is his slump-buster game?

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.00.  Rogers Center has been historically tough on Giants pitchers but Shark stepped up and put the Giants in position to win.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.38.  Dyson pitched a clean 7'th inning but then got into trouble in the 8'th, loading up the bases with no outs.  Tony Watson got one out, but then gave up a grand slam HR to Rowdy Tellez to get the BJ's within 1.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(6).  ERA= 1.04.  Smith's trade value keeps rising....or maybe the Giants go on a tear and keep him for the stretch run?  California Dreaming!

*********************************************************************************

The Giants remain in last place in the NL West but the Win enables them to close to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers and just 3 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Drew Pomeranz tries to send the Giants home with a 2-game sweep of the Blue Jays and a .500 record on the 8 game road trip tomorrow facing Clay Buchholz.

Down on the Farm: 4/22/2019

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 8-4:

Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .273.
Donovan Solano 3B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .353.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.86.

Donovan Solano has been raking since the beginning of spring training.  He also has a fairly long track record  of poor hitting in the majors, so this may all be a mirage.  1B seems like a waste of talent for Austin Slater but I guess the OF is so crowded, that's the only way he's going to get PA's.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1:

Jacob Heyward CF- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .313.
Jonah Arenado 1B- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .364.
Alfred Gutierrez RHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Conner Overton RHP- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.08.

Alfred Gutierrez is apparently a minor league FA out of the Tigers organization, but he's just 23 yo.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants blanked the Modesto Nuts 4-0:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(5), BB.  BA= .263.
Logan Baldwin LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .204.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.98.
John Russell RHP= 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.30.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 9.00.

It's a long season, but the early returns on Heliot Ramos are quite encouraging.  Is Caleb Baragar finally finding traction as a pitching prospect?

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Hickory Crawdads 5-1:

Shane Matheny SS- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .269.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .340.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .250.
Aaron Bond RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .226.
Blake Rivera RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.86.
Preston White RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.14.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Blake Rivera's combined line for his last 2 starts is 10 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 14 K's. Stay hot, Frankie Tostado!

Down on the Farm: 4/21/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats edged past the Salt Lake City Bees 3-2:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .233.
Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.04.

Avelino was the only River Cat to have multiple hits.  The Cats did not have any XBH's.  Tyler Beede continues to look like a future call up.

Richmond Flying Squirrels, San Jose Giants and Augusta Greenjackets were all idle on Easter Sunday.

Game Wrap 4/21/2019: Giants 3 Pirates 2

The Giants needed a stopper today.  With help from Buster Posey, Dereck Rodriguez played the role and the Giants avoided a sweep in Pittsburgh.  Key Lines;

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .227.  This might be the best game Buster has had in a couple of years.  His 3-run jack in the 5'th inning produced all of the Giants runs but it was just enough to squeak out the W.  It was a vintage Buster Blast to straightaway CF and here's to hoping we see some more of those this season!

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5. 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 9/4.  ERA= 3.54.  DRod came within 1 out of a Quality Start but was replaced by Reyes Moronta after issuing a 2-out walk to Colin Moran in the 6'th inning.  He faced the minimum number of batters through 3 IP, but gave up a double to Cole Tucker and a 2-run bomb to Josh Bell in the 4'th.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.  Moronta issued a walk to the first batter he faced but got out of the 6'th and pitched a scoreless 7'th.

Will Smith LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(5).  ERA= 1.17.  Smith gave Giants fans a scare when he gave up a double to Bryan Reynolds into the RF corner that looked like it might score Francisco Cervelli from first, but Steven Duggar and Joe Panik completed and perfect relay play to nail Cervelli by a comfortable margin for the final out.  And wouldn't that have been just ducky if Bryan Reynolds drove in the run that blew the Save?  The Comments section of this blog might have melted down!

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants remain 5.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and 4 games off the NL Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants have a travel day tomorrow before taking on the Blue Jays in Toronto.  Jeff Samardzija gets the ball for game 1 against RHP Trent Thornton.

Down on the Farm: 4/20/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outslugged the Salt Lake City Bees 9-6:

Henry Ramos RF- 2 for 4, 2 HR(4).  BA= .288.
Mike Gerber DH- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .347.
Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .341.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .231.
Zach Green 3B- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .313.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.89.
Sam Selman LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Williams Jerez LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.00.

Are the River Cats hitters hot, or did they just face bad pitching? 9 of the Cats' hits went for XBH's.  Mac hit is second HR in 2 games and 4'th XBH in 3 games.  I STILL think Mac is the one guy currently in the organization who has a chance to hit 30 dingers for the Giants THIS YEAR.  It's not too late!  If Mac is still in Bochy's and Zaidi's doghouse for some indiscernible reason, OK, bring up Henry Ramos or Mike Gerber already.  They couldn't keep Conner Joe in the organization because they want to compete now.  Why doesn't the same hold true for Tyler Austin?   Sam Selman gets the promo from AA Richmond and has a successful debut for the River Cats.  Ray Black paid a visit to orthopedist and was diagnosed with a pronator strain.  He's on the IL.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Altoona Curve blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-0(7 Innings, 1'st Game of DH):

Garrett Williams LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 3.46.
Ryan Halstead RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 12.86.

Squirrels managed just 1 hit in the 7-inning game.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Altoona Curve blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 1-0(8 innings, 2'nd Game of DH):

Yoanis Quiala RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/3.  ERA= 1.13.
Sam Wolff RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Melvin Adon RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.57.

Squirrels managed just 1 hit in this game too which adds up to 2 hits in 15 innings on the day.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes pounded the San Jose Giants 11-4:

Bryce Johnson RF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .224.
Heliot Ramos CF- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .241.

*********************************************************************************

A  Charleston River Dogs came from behind to top the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Ismael Munguia CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .314.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .238.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 11/0.  ERA= 2.75.
Solomon Bates RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.27.

Dominant Start for Hjelle.  He needs a couple more of these for an early promo to SJ.

Game Wrap 4/20/2019: Pirates 3 Giants 1(5 innings)

Just when you think the Giants can't find more new ways to lose, they find another way to lose.  This time they gave up a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 5'th inning to break a 1-1 tie.  The 6'th inning never happened as the game was eventually called due to rain and lightening.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 1 for 3.  BA= .244.  Duggar's single in the top of the 5'th temporarily tied the game.  It was the first an only hit by the top 5 batters in the lineup who went a combined 1 for 12.

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 2.  BA= .189.  Pillar scored the Giants only run ahead of Duggar's single.  Pillar continues to do good things but can't seem to get his BA above the Mendoza Line.

Derek Holland LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 K's GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 4.33.   Terrific secondary stats, but the gofers hurt.  Jung-Ho Kang hit a solo shot in the 4'th.  He is hitting .154, but absolutely kills the Giants.  The game winner was hit by Cole Tucker making his MLB debut.  He's a former first round pick that many considered a gross overdraft at the time.  He's taken his time getting to the bigs, but has filled out his frame nicely and could be a star for years to come.

Bryan Reynolds CF(Pirates)- 1 for 2.  BA= .500.  Former Giants farmhand, Bryan Reynolds, made his MLB debut along with Cole Tucker today.  Reynolds got off to a hot start in AAA this season.  His minor league career has been been pretty consistent hitting for a .300+ average with gap power.  Yeah, Giants could use that now, but but I'd rather have Duggar in CF and they shouid be able to do better in the corners in the future.

*********************************************************************************

Dodgers lost to the BrewCrew today, so the Giants remain 5.5 games behind in last place in the NL West and 4 games off the Wild Card pace.

*********************************************************************************

Dereck Rodriguez tries to stave off a sweep tomorrow facing Chris Archer.

Down on the Farm: 4/19/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats pounded the Salt Lake City Bees 11-5:

Donovan Solano 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .318.
Steven Vogt C- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .250.
Austin Slater 3B/1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .324.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB, SB(1).  BA= .267.

Yay Mac!  First dinger of the season one game after his first XBH.  Nice BA.  Hopefully Mac has his groove back and will find his way back to another shot at the Giants LF job.  I STILL think he's the best bet in the organization for 30 HR's out of LF.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Altoona Curve Postponed.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants defeated the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6-3:

John Riley C- 1 for 3, HR(2), Sac.  BA= .229.
DJ Myers RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.00.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 10.29.
Frank Rubio RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Joey Bart's absence is an opportunity for John Riley to get some traction on his pro career.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets outlasted the Charleston River Dogs 5-4 on 10 innings:

Ismael Munguia LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .298.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .356.
Seth Corry LHP- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Keaton Winn RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.77.

Game Wrap 4/19/2019: Pirates 4 Giants 1

Giants Manager Bruce Bochy has been criticized for leaving ace starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner in games too long.  Last night he might have started him too soon as Bummy gave up a 4-spot in the first inning.  The Giants never came close to overcoming that lead.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF/CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .241.   Duggar has an OBP of .353 over his last 7 games.  The first 3 batters in the lineup reached base 4 times out of 12 PA's for a .333 OBP, not great but better than any other combination on the team would have done.

Joe Panik 2B- 0 for 4, 3 K.  BA= .193.  Wow! What has happened to Joe Panik?  This has become consistent futility at the plate dating back to most of last season.  .194 over his past 7 games, .183 over his last 15 and .193 overall.  He's in his final season before free agency.  At what point do the Giants just move on and start looking for their next 2B?

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 3.66.  The secondary stats still look good but one awful stretch starting with a 2-out walk to Jung-Ho Kang in the first inning, followed by 4 consecutive hits doomed this game almost before it started.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants started this road trip with a bit of a spring in their step and looked great in the first game in Washington.  It's turned into a typical East Coast baseball equivalent of a death march which we have see over and over the past 2-3 seasons. This Loss drops the Giants into last place in the NL West, 5.5 games behind the Dodgers and 4 games off the Wild Card pace.

Down on the Farm: 4/18/2019

AAA  Las Vegas Aviators downed the Sacramento River Cats 9-6:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB, SB(2).  BA= .212.
Donovan Solano 2B- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .308.
Mac Williamson RF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .313.
Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .229.
Henry Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .271.
Steven Okert LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.63.

Mac Williamson gets his BA above .300 and his first XBH of the season.  This is the type of line we thought Steven Okert would produce more often this spring.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels doubled up the Altoona Curve 8-4:

Ryan Howard 3B- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .257.
Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, HR(3), BB.  BA= .333.
Jonah Arenado 1B- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .361.
Conner Menez LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 0.61.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.00.

Ryan Howard has moved all over the Richmond infield.  Jalen Miller stays hot.  This is a critical season for Jonah Arenado.  He's crushing it so far.

*********************************************************************************

A+   Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the San Jose Giants 7-3:

Logan Baldwin RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), SF.  BA= .171.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .196.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .293.
Chris Corbett C- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .600.
Chase Johnson RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Chase Johnson gets sent down to pull his game together.  This is a good way to start.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Charleston River Dogs 7-5:

Jose Layer CF- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .233.
Shane Matheny SS- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .250.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .216.
Andres Angulo C- 2 for 4.  BA= .240.
Ismael Munguia DH- 3 for 4.  BA= .286.
Nico Giarratano 2B- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .154.
Jake Wong RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.   ERA= 4.22.
Jesus Tona RHP-1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 0.00.

Game Wrap 4/18/2019: Nationals 4 Giants 2

Let's see, the Giants have historically struggled against Patrick Corbin, lefthand pitchers in general, on east coast road trips and getaway games.  So they won today, right?  Um....no!  It was a perfect storm of bad karma today and the Giants predictably lost as old nemesis, Patrick Corbin, struck out 9 Giants in 7.2 IP, on his way to allowing just 1 run in a game that was not as close as the score makes it look.  Key Lines:

Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP.  ERA= .219.  Longo got 2 of the Giants 5 hits and accounted for both runs with a Run and RBI.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.82.  Pomeranz seems to be settling into a "five and dive" routine, but didn't quite get there this time as he was lifted after a bases-loaded walk with 2 outs in the 5'th inning after throwing 88 pitches.

Ryan Additon HP Ump- Let's just say the Giants were not fans if his strike zone as Brandon Belt and Bruce Bochy both got ejected for arguing a called third strike that went against Belt.  Seems like the Giants thought Steven Duggar got robbed too.  If the strike zone box on the TV is accurate, Belt was called out twice on pitches clearly out of the zone and Tyler Austin once.  Duggar's called strike 3 was right on the outside edge.

*********************************************************************************

With the Loss, the Giants fell 4.5 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and trail in the Wild Card race by 3.5 games.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants move on to Pittsburgh where Madison Bumgarner will open the weekend series facing Jordan Lyles.

Down on the Farm: 4/17/2019

AAA  Las Vegas Aviators outlasted the Sacramento River Cats 5-4 in 10 innings:

Mike Gerber CF- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .350.
Anthony Garcia LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .258.
Austin Slater 1B- 1 for 2, 3 BB, SB(1),  BA= .222.
Michael Reed RF- 1 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .258.
Henry Ramos DH- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .267.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.85

It sure seems like Mike Gerber deserves a trial in the majors at some point.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Hartford Yard Goats edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

Levi Michael 3B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .241.
Ryan Howard SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .250.
Hamlet Marte C- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .091.
Johneshwy Fargas CF- 2 for 4, Assist(home).  BA= .212.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO=10/2.  ERA= 2.81.
Sam Selman LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Another case of the secondary stats looking better than ERA for Webb.  Selman continues to impress with his lines.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports crushed the San Jose Giants 9-1:

Jean Angomas LF- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .255.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Matt Frisbee RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Solomon Bates RHP- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.00.

17 K's in 11 IP for Frisbee on the season.  11 K's, 0 BB in 9 IP for Bates.

Game Wrap 4/17/2019: Nationals 9 Giants 6

A 4-run rally in the ninth inning was too little, too late after Jeff Samardzija once again fell victim to goferitis and this time the bullpen was not able to keep it close.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 5 2B, HR(3).  BA= .247.  Duggar is batting .281 with a .500 SLG% over his last 7 games.  Duggar's dinger in the 9'th capped the Giants scoring but brought them to within shouting distance of the Nationals.

Buster Posey C- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .208.  Signs of life from Buster's bat.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .242.  Belt is on fire.  .444 OBP with a .667 SLG% over his last 7 games and .383 OBP with .627 SLG% over his last 15.  Since the Giants have only played 19 games, he's pretty much been on fire all season!

Gerardo Parra LF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .218.  Parra's pelota largo in the 9'th drove in Kevin Pillar and narrowed the score to 9-4.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 4/1.  ERA= 2.91.  Once again, Shark's peripherals look good but he was sunk by the longball, but that is the story of his career.  Shark is a guy who really needs to pitch in a HR suppressing environment.  Nationals Park does not seem to fit that description right now.

Travis Bergen LHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 7.11.  Trevor Gott started the 7'th inning after pitching a clean 6'th, but have up a leadoff single to Victor Robles.  3 of the next 4 batters hit LH, so it made sense to bring in the LHP Bergen.   He alllllmost closed out the inning getting Adam Eaton on a line-out, intentionally walking Anthony Rendon after Robles stole 2B.  Juan Soto flied out, but then Matt Adams hit a 3-run bomb and the route was one.  If Bochy had it to do over, he might pull Bergen after the Adams bomb and bring in RHP to face Kendrick and Suzuki which might have prevented them from teaming up on that last 2-run HR.

Overall, gotta like the way the Giants fought back in the 9'th and their ability to score 6 runs on consecutive nights.  They actually got the tying run to the plate with 1 out after Duggar's dinger, but Crawford struck out and Longo popped up to end it.  The pitching should generally be good enough to give them wins most games they score 6 runs.

Mac Williamson DH- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .259.
Breyvic Valera 2B- 3 for 4.  BA= .273.
Tyler Beede RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 9 K.  ERA= 2.84.

Sam Coonrod RHP- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 6.00.

Mac still looking for his first XBH.  Beede's secondary stats looking good, although still too many walks.  Aviators scored 5 runs in the 9'th for the come-from-behind win.

AA  Hartford Yard Goats pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels 13-3:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .375.

Stay hot, Jalen Miller!

A+  San Jose Giants pounded the Stockton Ports 8-4:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .250.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 4, 2 HR(4).  BA= .194.
Carlos Sano RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.16.
Camilo Doval RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 12.71.

Heliot Ramos is raking batting .360 over his last 8 games.  I was so looking forward to seeing Joey Bart play in the Giants upcoming swings through SoCal.  Now that will have to wait, but Heliot is also worth the effort to get out to a Cal League game.

Wander Franco 3B- 1 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .158.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

This was, by far, Blake Rivera's best appearance as a pro.  Frankie Tostado stays hot.

Game Wrap 4/16/2019: Giants 7 Nationals 3

East Coast road trips have generally been disastrous for the Giants over the past several years.  They got off to a strong start to this one with a home run barrage to back (mostly) solid pitching.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .236.  Duggar's dinger, with a man on board, gave the Giants their first lead, 3-1 in the 5'th inning.  He added a single in the 9'th that did not figure in the scoring.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, HR(4), HBP.  BA= ..237.  Belt's blast added on to the Giants lead in the 6'th.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .200.  Longo's longball went to right-CF and broke through against Strasburg who had been dominating up to then.  Longo tripled to right-CF on Saturday in Oracle, so maybe he's finding his opposite field power stroke?

Kevin Pillar CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(3).  BA= .180.  Pillar stays hot.  He went 2 for 17 in his first 5 games as a Giant, but his 8 for 29(.276) since.  6 of those 8 hits have been XBH's.

Gerardo Parra LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .212.  Parra's single in the 5'th and scored ahead of Duggar's dinger.  Later he doubled in Pillar and scored on a Joe Panik RBI bunt single in the 7'th inning.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.63.  DRod was up to 98 pitches after 5 innings, but left with the lead and recorded the W.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/0.  ERA= 0.00.  Melancon hasn't looked all that impressive, but has managed to not give up a run in 9 IP over 8 appearances.  My theory with him is if he's getting groundball outs, he's pitching well, so he may be on the upswing.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants trail the NL West leading Padres by 3 game and the second place Dodgers by 2 games pending the outcomes of their games.  The Giants trail the D'Backs, who outscored the Braves 9-6, by 0.5 games and are 2.5 games off the Wild Card pace.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Hartford Yard Goats 5-1:

Ryan Howard 2B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Chris Shaw LF- 3 for 3, 3B, HR(2), BB, Assist(2B).  BA= .318.
Brandon Beachy RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.00.
Yoanys Quiala RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Big game for Chris Shaw goes deep for the second game in a row.  Keep your eye on Brandon Beachy, a MLB vet who is trying for a comeback after missing several years with a series of injuries.  Yoanys Quiala, 6'3", 235 lbs, 25 yo, was apparently signed as a minor league FA after missing half of last season due to a steroid suspension.  He is Cuban and had been in the Astros organization.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Stockton Ports downed the San Jose Giants 6-1:

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .216.
Joey Bart C- 1 for 1.  BA= .270.
Frank Rubio RHP= 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Heliot Ramos has dialed up the power early in his A+ campaign.  Joey Bart was lifted for a PH after suffering an apparent hand injury on a HBP in the 4'th inning.  The Ump ruled it was a foul ball but Bart reportedly appeared to be in significant pain.  That's less than ideal!

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets topped the Greensboro Grasshoppers 5-4:

Jose Layer DH- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .290.
Aaron Bond RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .206.
Shane Matheny 2B- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .242.
Ismael Munguia CF- 2 for 3.  BA= .258.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.95.
Jesus Tona RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 0.00.

Sean Hjelle continues a trend showing better secondary stats than ERA.  Jesus Tona continues to be lights out with a 2-inning Save.

Game Wrap 4/14/2019: Rockies 4 Giants 0

Derek Holland battled his command all game which led to a 3-run dinger for Nolan Arenado, but it really didn't matter.  Kevin Pillar's HBP and Evan Longoria's groundball single in the 8'th inning were all that stood between Rockies SP, German Marquez, and a perfecto.  Key Lines:

Derek Holland LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.09.  It was a tight strike zone all day but Holland wasn't all that close with many of his misses, particularly with his slider, which left him vulnerable to location mistakes.  He actually compensated quite well until Arenado made him pay big time with a 3-run dinger in the 5'th inning.  And again, in the end it didn't really matter.  The Giants never came close to scoring on Marquez.

*********************************************************************************

With the Loss, the Giants remained 4 games behind the NL West leading Padres who lost to the D'Backs 8-4.  The D'backs hopped over the Giants into 3'rd place by 0.5 games.  The Giants also lost ground to the second place Dodgers who beat the BrewCrew 7-1 and are 2 games behind the Padres and 2 ahead of the Giants.  The Giants are 3 games off the pace in the Wild Card race.

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 4-3:

Mike Gerber RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .406.
Anthony Garcia LF- 2 for 3.  BA= .273.
Michael Reed DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .261.

Batting left-handed is generally an advantage.  In Mike Gerber's case he would likely be playing in SF if he hit right-handed, which seems almost unfair.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1:

Ryan Howard SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .211.
Jalen Miller 2B- 3 for 4, SB(3).  BA= .375.
Jonah Arenado 3B/1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .316.
Conner Menez LHP- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Where has Jalen Miller been hiding his speed all this time?  If he keeps hitting and adds SB's to his resume, now there's a serious prospect! On the downside, he made 2 errors in the game.

*********************************************************************************

A+  Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 4-2:

Jean Angomas LF- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(3).  BA= .294.
Gio Brusa 1B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Logan Baldwin RF- 1 for 2, BB, SB(1).  BA= .172.

Carlos Sano RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Jean Angomas is another guy who has apparently been hiding his SB speed.

Game Wrap 4/13/2019: Giants 5 Rockies 2

The requiem for the California Dream will have to wait after the Giants pulled off one of their best all around performances in recent memory to win their third game in a row over the Rockies.  Timely hitting with a bit of power, situational hitting, strong pitching and absolutely scintillating defense, this game had it all!  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 4, SF.  BA= .238.  So, Duggar has reached base 6 times in 15 PA over his last 3 games and one of the outs was a SF.  He also showed off his impressive range and athleticism on a couple of shallow fly balls that would have dropped for a lesser defensive OF.

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 3, HR(4), SF.  BA= .161.  4 dingers and 12 ribeyes in his last 6 games.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .227.  Posey's RBI double was a flyball that hugged the RF line.  He still doesn't look like he's getting much power behind the stroke.

Pablo Sandoval 1B/3B- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .304.  Pabs double to leadoff the 4'th inning led to a run but it was his defense, particularly throws, that were the standout plays.  First, he threw a laser beam to nail Trevor Story trying to take an extra base at 3B.  Later he moved over to 3B on a double switch and threw out a runner at 1B from deep behind the bag.  2 sensational throws that were fun to watch.

Gerardo Parra LF- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .200.  Parra also made 2 nice grabs of fly balls in LF to add to the Giants list of stellar defensive plays.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.12.  This was a vintage Bummy performance.  Bochy was pushing it when he sent Bum out there for the 8'th inning and he gave up a leadoff double, but at least this time Boch had the sense to pull him immediately before further damage was done.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.52.  Moronta came in with no outs and a runner on 2B.  He proceeded to strike out the side and looked unhittable in the process.  Particularly impressive was his use of at least 4 fading 91 MPH changeups to strike out Charlie Blackmon.  Those are 2-seam FB's with extra movement to a lot of pitchers!

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 1.04.  Dyson gets the Save Op by default with most of the bullpen only available in a dire emergency that fortunately was not necessary.  File this one away, though in case Will Smith falters or gets traded.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants remain 4 games behind the surprising NL West leading Padres who topped the D'Backs for their 4'th straight Win and 8'th Win in 10 games.  The Giants also moved into sole possession of 3'rd place ahead of the D'Backs who lost to the Padres.  Meanwhile, the Dodgers dropped their 6'th in a row to the BrewCrew and now lead the Giants by just 1 game.  The Giants are just 2 games behind in the Wild Card race.  Is it just me, or is this starting to feel like 2010?

*********************************************************************************

Derek Holland tries for the 4-game sweeeeep tomorrow facing fireballing German Marquez.

*********************************************************************************

Like I said in the intro, this might be the best all-around game I've seen the Giants play in at least the last 3 years.  The hitting wasn't spectacular, but it was there.  They executed their situational hitting close to perfection with 3 SF's and a very nice sac bunt by Yangervis Solarte.  The pitching was terrific as it has been all season so far.  It was the D that really shined, though with the laser throws from Pablo, a nifty barehand play by Longoria at 3B, the running, tumbling catch by Duggar in shallow R-CF.  A diving stop and throw by Joe Panik and the catches by Parra.  Most of all, they played with spirit and looked like they wanted to be out there and were having fun all in spite of playing 18 innings the night before.  Great game and great vibes for the future.  California Dreaming is alive!

*********************************************************************************

Late Update:  Tyler Austin did not play despite the Rockies starting a lefty.  Turns out he hurt his elbow during a throwing drill and is headed for an MRI with an IL stint likely.

Down on the Farm: 4/12/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats tamed the Salt Lake City Bees 4-2:

Mike Gerber DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .407.
Donovan Solano 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .348.
Mac Williamson RF- 2 for 5.  BA= .238.
Mike Yastrzemski LF- 1 for 2, HR, 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Ty Blach LHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.00.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

Mike Gerber has raked all spring.  If the Giants are in a rebuild, it seems like we should see Gerber in Gerardo Parra's role in SF at some point.  Maybe part of Z's grand plan is to flip Parra for a low level prospect before promoting Gerber?  Mac didn't hit a dinger.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Reading Fightin' Phils postponed due to rain.

A+  Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 6-2:

Heliot Ramos CF- 0 for 2, 2 BB's.  BA= .214.
Joey Bart C- 0 for 4.  BA= .281.
Garrett Cave RHP- 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.24.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 17.18.

Ramos is taking a lot of walks so far.  I think that is a good thing. Bart has had several multi-hit games and several 0'fers.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets shut down the West Virginia Power 9-3:

Ismael Munguia LF/CF- 3 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .208.
Jose Layer CF- 1 for 3, SB(2).  BA= .286.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 2 for 4, HR(2), 2 BB.  BA= .357.
Wander Franco 2B- 1 for 2, 3 BB.  BA= .125.
Jake Wong RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.35.

Jose Layer came out of the game after stealing 2B in the 4'th inning.  Hopefully not a serious injury.  Frankie Tostado is raking!  Decent start for Jake Wong.

Game Wrap 4/12/2019: Giants 3 Rockies 2(18 innings)

After both SP's left after 5 innings and the score tied at 2, this game turned into an epic Battle of the Bullpens which did not end until Brandon Belt scored in the 18'th inning when Rockies C Chris Iannetta pulled his foot on a fielder's choice play at the plate.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar RF- 2 for 6, BB.  BA= .220.  After an 0 for 13 skid over 3 games, Duggar has reached base 4 of 11 times over the last two.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 6, 2B, 3B, BB.  BA= .231.  You may remember an epic 18 inning game Belt ended in 2012 with a HR.  This one took a little more work as he doubled to lead off the 18'th.  After an intentional walk to Crawford, Belt advanced to 3B on a flyball out by Kevin Pillar.  The Rockies then intentionally walked Gerardo Parra to create the force at every base.  Eric Kratz then bounced one into a hole in the 5-man infield. Ian Desmond's throw home was in time but Iannetta's foot came off the plate and Belt slid home with the winning run.

Drew Pomeranz LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.86.  Pomeranz battled the Rockies and the Umpires for 5 innings and exited after throwing 84 pitches.  That is a footnote in this game, but as I've said before, if the Giants get 5 innings and 2 runs allowed from Pomeranz every game, they will consider it a great investment.  Oh, the umpires! The home plate umpire had on inconsistent strike zone at best, but seemed to be consistently squeezing Pomeranz.  On top of that, the Rockies 2'nd run scored on a balk call which honestly could have gone either way, but which Kruk vehemently disagreed with.

Bullpen- 13 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 19 K's.  I mean, what an epic performance by the best bullpen in baseball!  The Giants got 2 innings each from Mark Melancon, Trevor Gott and Travis Bergen and 3 from Nick Vincent.  OK, THAT is why they are carrying 8 RP's!  And the K's!  3 for Melancon, 3 for Gott and 5, 5, from Travis Bergen who recorded his second career W.

*********************************************************************************

The Win kept the Giants 4 games behind the NL West leading Padres who topped the D'Backs 2-1, but they are just 2 games out of second place as the Dodgers dropped their 5'th game in a row, this time to the BrewCrew in LA.  The Giants are also 3 games out in the Wild Card race. They are 3.5 games ahead of last place Rockies.

*********************************************************************************

The pressure is on both SP's today to get deep into the game as Madison Bumgarner faces fellow lefty Kyle Freeland.  The big question is who is available in the bullpen?  I'm pretty sure Reyes Moronta is the only reliever with an option and he's relatively rested.  Dereck Rodriguez might be available as he is mid-rotation and the Giants have a travel day Monday, or he could be a candidate to be optioned to bring up a fresh reliever.  I guess there is always Pabs!

*********************************************************************************

Thoughts on Extra Inning Games:  Games like this are fun to talk about later, but are dreadful to watch.  I gave it up after 10 innings.  They can't be good for the players who have to go out and play again in a few hours after finishing a full doubleheader when measured in innings.  I don't have the numbers and am not sure where to find them, but it sure seems like these extended games are becoming more common in the era of dominant bullpens.  I am personally in favor of MLB finding some way to end them more quickly whether that by starting innings with a designated runner at 2B or allowing tie games during the regular season or some other way we haven't thought of.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.25.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.20.

Shaun Anderson and Chase Johnson had their strikeout pitches working, but were hittable, not an unusual occurrence in the PCL.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

A+  San Jose Giants tamed the Visalia Rawhide 6-2:

Bryce Johnson RF- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .296.
Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .231.
Joey Bart C- 3 for 4, HR(2), 2 CS.  BA= .321.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 3 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .364.
Caleb Baragar LHP-4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Heliot Ramos is 6 for 11 with 3 dingers over his last 3 games.  Joey Bart bounced back from an 0 for 4 with a big game.  He continues to gun down Cal League runners.  Caleb Baragar has 13 K's and 3 BB's in 7 IP in 2 appearances.

*********************************************************************************

A  West Virginia Power shut down the Augusta Greenjackets 4-0:

Gregory Santos RHP- 3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 5.40.
Matt Frisbee RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.86.

Matt Frisbee has 11 K's against 2 BB's in 7 IP in 2 appearances.  Gregory Santos left the game after summoning the trainer with 2 outs in the 4'th inning.  West Virginia Power is now a Mariners affiliated(was Pirates last several years).  Remember Jarred Kelenic?  He went 3 for 4 with a 2B.

Game Wrap 4/11/2019: Giants 1 Rockies 0

Kevin Pillar hit his 3'rd dinger in 4 games to drive in the Giants only run while Jeff Samardzija and the bullpen shut down the Rockies offense.  Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 3, HR(3).  BA= .152.  The Giants have scored 2 runs in the last 2 games, both on solo HR's from Kevin Pillar.  Giants have scored 14 runs over the last 4 games.  Pillar has driven in 10 of them.  Right now, he's carrying the team.  Can he do it long enough for the rest of the lineup to heat up?  Panik and Belt reached base twice each and Posey 3 times so there are signs of life.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.  ERA= 1.62.  The Shark is back!  One of his better starts as a Giant, maybe his best and it came at a great time when the offense needed the pitching to pick them up.  Tony Watson and Will Smith added clean 8'th and 9'th innings respectively with Smith picking up his 4'th Save.

*********************************************************************************

With the Win, the Giants remain 4 games out of first place, but somehow 4 games behind the Padres does not seem as daunting as 4 games behind the Dodgers.  Speaking of the Dodgers, they got swept out of St. Louis and now trail the Padres who topped the D'Backs, by a game.  The Giants are just 3 games behind the Dodgers.  The Giants also gained 0.5 games in the Wild Card Race for a 3.5 game deficit.

From all the rebuild and firesale talk in the comments, you'd think the Giants were already hopelessly out of contention, but hey, things aren't looking so bad, at least for the moment, thanks to a big stumble by the Dodgers.

Down on the Farm: 4/10/2019

AAA  Las Vegas Aviators downed the Sacramento River Cats 5-1:

Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .214.
Steven Vogt C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .263.
Tyler Beede RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.17.

Gotta think Steven Vogt is getting close to returning to the majors and would seem to be a better option for reserve C for the offense starved Giants due to his bat.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Bowie Baysox 3-2:

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .300.
Jacob Heyward DH- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .353.
Logan Webb RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/2.  ERA= 0.90.
Sam Selman LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Kieren Lovegrove RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Jalen Miller hasn't missed a beat from last year in SJ.  Have the skills developed enough to bring out the tools?  Dominant 5 innings from Logan Webb with a huge groundball tendency.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 6-3:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 3, 2HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .182.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .190.
John Gavin LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.50.
Olbis Parra RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

2 dinger/2 walk game for Heliot Ramos.  He must have gotten the memo re. what Farhan his looking for in prospects.  Oh, and it was his 3'rd dinger in 2 games.  9 K's in 4.1 IP in 2 appearances for Raffi Vizcaino who records his first Save.

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets outscored the Greenville Drive 9-8:

Jose Layer DH- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .304.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .333.
Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .346.
Aaron Bond RF- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .222.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .381.
Jeffry Parra C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Norwith Gudino RHP- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Solomon Bates RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Jesus Tona RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Huge game for Frankie Tostado, but overall this looks like a much better offensive team than we are used to seeing in Augusta.

Game Wrap 4/10/2019: Padres 3 Giants 1

Kevin Pillar stayed hot but the rest of the Giants lineup went cold again and failed to back a Quality Start from Dereck Rodriguez.  The Giants dropped their 4'th series of the season without any series wins. Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .140.  Pillar hit his second dinger and drove in his 9'th run in 3 games.  That was the only scoring for the Giants in this game.

Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K', GO/AO= 10/2.  ERA= 4.15.  A strong start any way you measure it.  It wasn't enough as is so often the case with this offense.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers suddenly don't look so invincible after losing their 3'rd in a row to the Cardinals, so the Giants remain 4 games off the pace in the NL West despite the Loss.  The Win put the Padres in a first place tie with the Dodgers at 8-5.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants start a 4-game series against the Rockies tomorrow with Jeff Samardzija facing Jon Gray.

Down on the Farm: 4/9/2019

AAA  Las Vegas Aviators bombed the Sacramento River Cats 10-2:

Andrew Suarez LHP- 3 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 10.29.
DJ Myers RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Rough start to the season for Andrew Suarez.  Myers moves up from San Jose after a poor outing there and dominates in AAA.  Carlos Sano also came up from SJ but gave up 4 runs in 0.2 IP.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-5:

Levi Michael CF- 1 for 5, BB.  BA= .100.
Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .250.
Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 4, BB, SB(1).  BA= .250.
Chris Shaw DH- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .300.
Jacob Heyward RF- 2 for 4, BB, Assist(2B).  BA= .385.

All 9 of the Squirrels hits were singles.  They added in 7 BB's.

*********************************************************************************

A+ San Jose Giants edged out the Stockton Ports 4-3:

Heliot Ramos CF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .105.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .273.
Jose Marte RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 27.00.
JJ Santa Cruz LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Israel Cruz RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Giants pitchers were effectively wild issuing 11 BB's against 9 K's.

*********************************************************************************

A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1(7 innings, Game 1 of DH):

Ismael Munguia DH- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .133.
Diego Rincones LF- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .333.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 3.00.

GJ's mustered just 2 hits in the game.  Hjelle now has 9 K's and 1 BB in 9 IP with a GO/AO= 1.80.

Game Wrap 4/9/2019: Giants 7 Padres 2

Gotta hand it to the offense.  Last night they put up a 5-spot in the 3'rd inning and it wasn't enough, so what did they do tonight?  Well, they put up a 6-spot in the 2'nd inning.  This time it was enough and they didn't even need the add-on run they got in the 4'th inning.  Key Lines:

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .128.  Pillar drove in 4 runs for the second night in a row, this time with a bases-loaded double and drove in 3 and a SF.  The last Giants player to drive in 8 runs over 2 consecutive games?  Barry Bonds with 9 in 2002 per sfgiants.com!

Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .333.  I'd feel better about acquiring Austin if it didn't result in Brandon Belt moving to LF, but hey, no dingers but 2 hits and 2 RBI's in 2 games.

Derek Holland LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.38.  Holland dominated the Padres by owning the inside corner.  So far he's picked up where he left off last season and making the Giants re-signing him look great.

*********************************************************************************

The Win moved the Giants into sole possession of 4'th place in the NL West just 4 games behind the division leading Dodgers who dropped their second in a row to the Cardinals.

*********************************************************************************

Dereck Rodriguez tries for the Giants first series win tomorrow facing Nick Margevicius.

Down on the Farm: 4/8/2019

AAA Sacramento River Cats outscored the Tacoma Rainiers 11-10 in 10 innings:

Mike Gerber LF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .538.
Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .200.
Henry Ramos DH- 3 for 5.  BA= .421.
Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .286.
Michael Reed RF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .333.
Mike Yastrzemski CF- 1 for 4, SF.  BA= .364.
Ray Black RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Chase Johnson RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 13.50.

I read somewhere they are using MLB balls in AAA this season.  Just sayin'

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Bowie Baysox postponed.

*********************************************************************************

A+  San Jose Giants destroyed the Stockton Ports 10-1:

Joey Bart C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .313.

John Riley 1B- 2 for 5, HR(1).   BA= .417.
David Villar 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Aaron Phillips RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Joey Marciano LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
John Russell RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.00.
Frank Rubio RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Joey Bart's bat comes alive!

A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Greenville Drive postponed.

Game Wrap 4/8/2019: Padres 6 Giants 5

Wow!  Giants fans were feeling good about this one after the Giants put up a 5-spot in the bottom of the 4'th inning and Madison Bumgarner working on a no-hitter.  That's when the Padres started hitting dingers accounting for 5 of 6 unanswered runs in a come-from-ahead loss for the Giants.  Key Lines:

Tyler Austin 1B- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .333.  More on Austin later, but he started the 5-run rally with a single.

Gerardo Parra LF- Parra came in as a defensive replacement for Austin with Brandon Belt moving from LF to 1B.  When Parra came to the plate in the 7'th, he took a pitch off the side of his mouth which didn't look like it felt good.

Kevin Pillar CF- 1 for 4, HR(1), SB(2).  BA= .111.  This is why the Giants traded for Pillar.  RH pop agains LHP's.  Pillar capped the 4'th inning scoring with a grand slam dinger.

Madison Bumgarner LHP-  6 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/4.  ERA= 3.32.  Bumgarner had a QS in the bag, but stared down Bochy after allowing a leadoff single in the 7'th.  The next batter doubled which brought Boch out again to change pitchers.  Moronta allowed 1 inherited runner to score on a groundout, then boom!  Franmil Reyes destroyed a hanging slider way past the LF foul pole.  Ballgame!

*********************************************************************************

Derek Holland tries to get the Giants back in the Win column tomorrow evening facing another LHP, Joey Lucchesi.

*********************************************************************************

Earlier in the day, the Giants made a trade with the Twins for 1B/OF Tyler Austin who the Twins had DFA'd.  The Giants gave up minor league OF Malique Ziegler, then made room on the roster by DFA'ing Conner Joe.  So long Conner, we hardly knew ye!  Anyway, Austin is defensively challenged but has toonder in his bat from the right side.  If he can can play passable defense at 1B or OF, he could be The Breakout Kid.  I've liked Austin for awhile.  I think I included him in a proposed trade with the Yankees for Madison Bumgarner awhile back.  The power comes with a lot of K's, though.

As for Ziegler, he has intriguing tools and has played well for stretches, but is on the thin side and has had apparent stamina and injury issues.  The Giants have better OF prospects in the lower minors.

As for how to deploy Austin, he seems to be a liability at any position.  Seems you weaken two positions by playing him at 1B and moving Belt to LF.

Down on the Farm: 4/7/2019

AAA  Sacramento River Cats buried the Tacoma Rainiers 10-3:

Henry Ramos RF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .357.
Donovan Solano 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .417.
Steven Vogt C- 1 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .154.
Zach Green 3B- 2 for 3, 2 HR(2), BB.  BA= .500.
Breyvic Valera SS- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .286.
Ty Blach LHP- 4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 6.75.
Pat Venditte LHP/RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Williams Jerez LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Zach Green's strong preseason is carrying over into the regular season. Hey!  You don't suppose Zach Green could play LF?  Ty Blach gave up a 3-spot in the first inning then settled down.  I think we could see Williams Jerez in SF before the season is over, especially if the Giants are sellers at the trade deadline.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Hartford Yard Goats blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-0:

Jacob Heyward RF/CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .333.
Brandon Beachy RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 6.75.
Nolan Riggs RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 0.00.
Sam Selman LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Brandon Beachy makes his season debut after being out of affiliated baseball since 2015(he pitched 1 inning in 2016).  Graduate of Driveline Baseball.  Interesting story to follow.  I remember when Sam Selman was a sleeper draft prospect from Vanderbilt I really liked all the way back in 2012.  He was a 2'nd round draft pick by KC.  He's kicked around since then.  Maybe the Giants are the organization to give him some traction on his career?

*********************************************************************************

A+  Visalia Rawhide whipped the San Jose Giants 9-3:

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 4, BB, 2 SB(3).  BA= .353.
Jean Angomas LF- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .250.
Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .222.
Orlando Garcia 3B- 1 for 4.  BA= .375.
Garrett Cave RHP-4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO- 7/0.  ERA= 2.25.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Camilo Doval RHP- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 47.25.

Garrett Cave throws hard and keeps the ball on the ground. That's a pretty good base to work from.  Dominant 2 innings from Raffi Vizcaino.  Remember Camilo Doval last April in Augusta?  Can someone please tell him when the season starts?

*********************************************************************************

A  Augusta Greenjackets swarmed over the Asheville Tourists 11-2:

Ismael Munguia CF- 0 for 3, BB, HBP, SB(1).  BA= .083.
Jose Layer DH- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .313.
Diego Rincones LF- 2 for 5.  BA= .333.
Frankie Tostado 1B- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .385.
Wander A Franco 3B- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .111.
Mikey Edie RF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .167.
Nico Giarratano SS- 3 for 4.  BA= .333.
Seth Corry LHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Keaton Winn RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

Stoked about Jose Layer.  Stay healthy, kid!  Wander Franco The Younger's dinger was a grand slam. Seth Corry seems to be a true outcomes pitcher.
