College Corner: Odds and Ends

It's been awhile since I checked in on my man Ricky Oropesa, Sophomore, 1B, USC. Ricky continues to have an excellent season despite inconsistent W-L results for his team. Ricky's line so far this season stands at .354/.430/.663 with 12 HR, 18 doubles, 7 SB's. Although he will likely finish with just slightly more than his 13 HR's from last season, he has made great strides in hitting the ball for average and will likely finish far above his .313 BA from last year. A lot of those exra hits are going to doubles and he only had 8 last season. Ricky should be in line for a spot on BA's preseason College All-America team next year. The thing I like about Ricky is he is not just a power hitter. He's a great hitter with power. Big difference!

My current sleeper obsession, Andrew Barbosa, came out of yesterday's University of South Florida game in the second inning. It's a leg injury, so hopefully not a big setback.

My man, Gauntlett Eldemire had a huge game for Ohio U yesterday: 5 for 5, 2B, 3 HR's!, BB. Eldemire's season line now stands at .410/.500/.770 with 14 HR, 13 SB's in 17 attempts. Some MLB team is going to get quite a player in the draft starting somewhere in round 3, I'm predicting.

San Diego RHP Kyle Blair may be putting on a late push to improve his draft stock. Friday night he turned in a dominant start against a good Portland team: 9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 15 K's. He came within one out of a no-hitter! Blair's season line now stands at 7-3, 2.87, 75.1 IP, 28 BB, 97 K's. He is a former fourth round draft pick of the LA Dodgers. His college career at San Diego has been somewhat inconsistent.
