Game Wrap 05-13-2010: Padres 1 Giants 0

It's one thing to get swept by the Padres in their crib. It's quite another to get swept by the Padres in your own crib. This was about as dismal a peformance, especially for the offense as I can recall. And, what about Jonathan Sanchez? The guy absolutely owns the Padres, yet has two losses to show for it so far this year. Key lines(It will be short, I promise!):

Offense: 1 for 28. That pretty much tells you all you need to know, right there.

Jonathan Sanchez- 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.66. You can't pitch a whole lot better than Sanchez has pitched vs the Padres this year. What, 4 hits 2 ER in 15 IP? That is just ridiculous!

Not much else to say about this game or this series. The Giants are going to have to find a way to put this behind them.

The Padres moves 3.5 games up on the Giants with a record of 22-12. Amazingly, the Giants are still in second place at 18-15. LA was idle at 17-17, 1.5 games behind the Giants. Arizona was also idle staying at 14-21, 8.5 games off the pace. Colorado is trailing the Nats late in their game. They will fall to 16-18 if that holds up.

The Giants now take on Houston, who they swept in their crib in the opening series of the season. Houston will be a different team though as they have Lance Berkman back and Hunter Pence is heating up. Things don't look so good for ending this losing streak that now stands at 4 games with Todd Wellemeyer on the mound tomorrow night. Houston's starter, Felipe Paulino is a better pitcher than his 0-5 record would imply.

  1. I really believe that everyone is under estimating Bud Black. SD has some very good young pitchers. I haven't seen much write up about their pitching but it has been looking pretty decent of late and not only against the Giants.

  2. Oh, I agree. San Diego's pitching is definitely for real. They took Correia off the Giants scrap heap and turned him into a gem. They got 4 serious young arms from the White Sox for Jake Peavy. Mat Latos has always been a stud prospect. LeBlanc is a nice finesse lefty find and looks like a very smart pitcher. They added in a guy I really wanted the Giants to sign this offseason in Jon Garland, who is the perfect #4 or 5 starter in the west coast ballparks, especially Petco.

San Diego's lineup is a lot like the Giants except that AGone is a HR threat that the Giants don't have and they have a lot more team speed.

Add all that up and the Padres are going to give a lot of teams fits this year and could easily emerge as the best in the NL West.
