Down on the Farm: 4/19/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies out hit the Reno Aces 10-8:

Justin Christian(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(2), OF Assist( Elmore at 2B). BA= .473.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .424.
Joaquin Arias(PH)- 1 for 1, 2B. BA= .373.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.65.
Wilmin Rodriguez(LHP)-2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.59.

6 other Grizzlies hitters had 1 hit each. Grizzlies pitchers have some pretty horrific looking ERA's there.

AA Altoona Curve edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

Cavan(.306), Joseph(.231), Hodges(.283), Mayora(.362) had 2 hits each.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 K's. ERA= 2.84.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.66.

Kickham has a tough start. Dunning is definitely in the mix for a MLB bullpen role in in the next 2 years.

High A Bakersfield Blaze topped the San Jose Giants 8-7:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .271.
Luke Anders(DH)- 3 for 4. BA= .311.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .273.
Alex Burg(C)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .160.

Ricky has a .353 OBP to go with the .273 BA, but is only slugging .341. I really thought Burg was going to tear it up this year. Shows you how much I know. Season still very young though.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets downed the Greenville Drive 9-8:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 1 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB, 2 SB(6). BA= .288.
Ben Thomas(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B. BA= .218.
Eric Sim(C)- 1 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB. BA= .160.
Garrett Buechele(DH)- 5 for 5. BA= .500.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 4.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.38.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.86.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 16.50.

All the hitters listed are older for the league. Tomlinson seems promising. Buechele may be rehabbing an injury and is blocked by Duvall in San Jose. Baby steps for Mejia who pitched out of the pen.

Down on the Farm: 4/18/2012

AAA Reno Aces edged the Fresno Grizzlies 7-6:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 5, 3B, BB. BA= .490.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 3 for 6. BA= .360.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .418.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 1.80.

Christian and Arias can help a MLB team right now.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Reading Phillies 2-1:

Ryan Cavan(2B)- 1 for 3, HR(1), Sac. BA= .295.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.59.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

With Hembree, Bochy and Rosin, the bullpen depth is well stocked for the future.

High A San Jose Giants topped the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 8-5:

Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .268.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2), BB. BA= .255.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB. BA= .364.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.13.

Susac's BA is on the rise. Jurica is off to a great start, albeit not at SS. Bradley has been excellent so far.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets rained out.

Down on the Farm: 4/17/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Reno Aces 4-2:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .196.
Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 2 for 4. BA- .250.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .404.
Jackson Williams(C)- 2 for 3, HR(1). BA= .167.
Eric Hacker(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.00.

Nice game for Frankie Pegs. Can he get it going? Roger K stays hot. Can he stay healthy? Former Giant Joe Martinez pitched well for the Aces.

AA Reading Phillies crushed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 19-6:

Wow! Really nothing to see here!

High A San Jose Giants blanked the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4-0 for their 8'th win in a row:

Andrew Susac(C)- 3 for 4. BA= .243.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .235.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.62.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(2). ERA= 0.00.

Susac is recovering nicely from a slow start to the season. Rogers is looking better than he did in Augusta last year. Rosin looks like he is on the closer track.

Low A Charleston River Dogs downed the Augusta Greenjackets 7-3 in 11 innings:

Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/1. ERA= 3.77.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Very solid QS from Blackburn. Hall has been lights out so far.

Down on the Farm: 4/16/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Tacoma Rainiers 3-2:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 4. BA= .548.
Brian Burres(LHP)- 7 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.76.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.00.

The Heath Hembree era is fast approaching!

AA Reading Phillies downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3:

Gary Brown- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .214. Finally a multihit game from Brown.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .188. Good to see Joseph have a good game too.

High A San Jose Giants made a 3 run HR by Devin Harris stand up for a 3-2 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes:

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.24.
Luis Rojas(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.50.
Chris Wilson(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.50.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets lost to the Charleston River Dogs 5-1:

Scotty Walker(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Walker was signed as an undrafted FA out of the Northwoods League. He's from Rocklin, CA and went to college at UC Davis. He's a TJ survivor and reportedly throws a 95 MPH heater.

Down on the Farm: 4/15/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Tacoma Rainiers 7-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .553.
Travis Blackley(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.96.
George Kontos(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

6 multi-hit games out of 7 for Christian. I would think Kontos is in the mix for a future callup if more injuries strike the bullpen.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Altoona Curve 3-1:

Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.68.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1). ERA= 0.00.

High A

Game 1 San Jose Giants edged the Bakersfield Blaze 2-1:

Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 3. BA= .200.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 8/3. ERA= 3.48.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Game 2 San Jose Giants defeated the Bakersfield Blaze 2-1 in 8 innings:

Ryan Lollis(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .375.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .233.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 3 K's, 2 WP. ERA= 5.40.
Jose Valdez(RHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.70.

Concepcion had some success last year as a reliever in Augusta. The wildness returned in this starting assignment.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats downed the Augusta Greenjackets 6-1:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 3 for 4, SB(4). BA= .341.
Joseph Biagini(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 9/0, 3 HR. ERA= 7.50.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.00.

I guess when Biagini elevates a pitch, it goes a long ways. Some sabermetricians would look at that line and say he was unlucky. I'm not so sure.

Down on the Farm: 4/14/2012

AAA Tacoma Rainiers buried the Fresno Grizzlies 11-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA- .529.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .341.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .361.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.38.

5 multihit games out of 6 for Christian as well as 3 or more times on base. Culby stays hot. It looks like the Petit era may be over quite soon.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels outpitched the Altoona Curve 1-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 4. BA= .189.
Johnny Monell(C)- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .269.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 3 for 3. BA= .355.
Michael Kickham(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.38.

Brown is struggling as so many Giants hitting prospects have done in the EL. Look for Kickham to emerge from his sleep this year.

High A San Jose Giants extinguished the Bakerfield Blaze 6-4:

Joe Panik(SS)- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .324.
Luke Anders(DH)- 3 for 4, HR(2). BA= .233.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB. BA= .333.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 2, BB, HBP. BA= .391.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.25.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Parker is showing his power potential in his second try at the Cal League. I would think a mid-season promotion would be in order if he keeps this up.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 6-0:

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K's, HBP, 2 WP's. ERA= 3.68.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.25.

Another wild start for Crick who pitched 3 shutout innings before the wheels came off in the 4'th.

Down on the Farm: 4/13/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Tacoma Rainiers 6-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .516.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .344.
Todd Linden(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .242.
Andrew Kown(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.59.

LInden's triple was the big blow driving in 3 runs. Christian has had 3 or more hits in 4 of his last 5 games.

AA Altoona Curve dominated Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-0:

Chris Heston(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.64.

HIgh A San Jose Giants rained out.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats buried the Augusta Greenjackets 10-0:

Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 0 K. ERA= 19.80.
Kevin Couture(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Mejia may need to go back to camp and then the AZL for more seasoning. Couture missed last season after being drafted out of USC in 2010. This was already his 5'th appearance this year in which he has pitched 9 shutout innings.

Here's a quote that was put up on the TV broadcast of the Giants home opener:

"Home openers are always exciting whether they are at home or away."

Yogi Berra

I was rolling on the couch laughing at that one!

Down on the Farm: 4/12/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Las Vegas 51's 8-5:

Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .500.
Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 5, HR(1). BA= .172.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 5, HR(3). BA= .500.
Todd Linden(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .207.
Skyler Stromsmoe(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1), BB. BA= .500.
Eric Hacker(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.27.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

If Roger K can stay healthy, he's setting himself up for a huge year. I have a feeling that once Frankie Pegs gets it going, there'll be no looking back. Todd Linden is now 31 yo and struggling to hit as a first baseman in AAA. Who'd have thunk it? With growing concerns about BWeezy's health, the possibility of seeing Hembree closing out games in SF seems more and more likely.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Altoona Curve 7-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 3, BB, HBP, SB(1). BA= .233.
Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 4. BA= .484.
Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .355.
Wes Hodges(1B)- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .286.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .280.
Jason Stevenson(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.63.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Brown looks like he's going into just get on base mode. Stevenson is a feel-good story. Hope he eventually gets at least a cup of coffee.

HIgh A San Jose Giants edged the Bakersfield Blaze 1-0 in a game called after 6 innings due to weather:

Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 1.80.

Bradley pitched in Low A last year and looks like he's making a successful transition to High A.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-0:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 3 for 4, SB(3). BA= .345.
Elliott Blair(CF)- 2 for 3, SF. BA= .286.
Christopher Marlowe(RHP)- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.57.
Andrew Berger(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Tomlinson is hot. As long as Christopher Marlowe has the swing and miss stuff, he can get away with a walk here and there.

Down on the Farm: 4/11/2012

AAA Las Vegas 51's defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 14-4:

Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 3, 3B, HR(2), BB. BA= .517.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 1 for 4, 2B, SB(1). BA= .357.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 2 for 4. BA= .412.
Francisco Peguero(RF)- 0 for 4. BA= .125.

Frankie Pegs is off the a tough start. Roger K, Culby and Noonan are all hot. The pitching in this one was as wretched as it was for the Giants today.

AA Bowie Baysox out hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels 11-6:

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 5, OF Assist(Widlansky at 3B). BA= .481.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 2 for 5. BA= .364.
Bobby Bundy(RHP, Baysox)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.27.

Good game by Dylan Bundy's big bro. Dominguez continues to impress with the bat and OF arm.

High A San Jose Giants topped the High Desert Mavericks 10-6:

Joe Panik(SS)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .296.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .348.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 1 for 4, 3B, BB, OF Assist(Proscia at 3B). BA= .357.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 3 for 4, SF. BA= .667.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.53.

Very nice game by Ricky to raise his BA to .348. I could be wrong, but I think the people who have Ricky pegged as all power with a low BA are mistaken. I think he will hit for average and power with good plate discipline. Andrew Susac hurt his pinky finger and had been struggling at the plate. Arnold had a nice game at the plate, but had 2 throwing errors.

Low A Charleston River Dogs pounded the Augusta Greenjackets 11-5:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB. BA= .280.
Elliott Blair(DH)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(1). BA- .222.
Michael Merganthaler(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .167.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 8/3.

A few struggling hitters got off the beam today. Blackburn didn't pitch great, but it looks like his D failed him too.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Down on the Farm: 4/10/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies out hit the Las Vegas 51's 10-5:

Justin Christian(LF)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .500.
Roger Kieschnick(DH)- 3 for 5, 3B. BA= .500.
Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .308.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 3 for 5. BA= .385.
Arias(.409) and Whiteside(.400) had 2 hits each.
Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.80.
George Kontos(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

4 players with 3 hits each. It's still very early, but is Nick Noonan resurrecting his prospect status? Vogey looks ready to pitch for the Giants.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox 5-4:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 5. BA= .261.
Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA=.348
Wes Hodges(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .227.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 2 for 3, SF. BA= .353.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.40.

Brown is 0 for 10 over his last 2 games. Ouch!

High A San Jose Giants outscored the High Desert Mavericks by a touchdown and 2 point conversion:

Jarrett Parker(LF)- 4 for 6, 3B, HR(3). BA= .375.
Duvall(.308), Lofton(.273) and Jurica(.368) had 4 hits each.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Ricky DNP. I was going to go to this game but got a heads up that Ricky was not in the lineup. Apparently just part of the rotation of players. Giants banged out 25 hits. There was a weather front moving in last evening so I'm guessing it was pretty windy up in Adelanto(Just read it was a 30 MPH wind blowing R-L).

Low A Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Charleston River Dogs 2-0:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .421.
Ben Thomas(1B)- 2 for 4. BA= .304.
Chuckie Jones(CF)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .120.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

I was surprised that Payne did not get assigned to SJ. He's tearing up the SAL so far. Escobar has a Zitoesque pitching line. He seems like he's been around forever, but does not turn 20 yo for a few more days.

Monday, April 9, 2012

Down on the Farm: 4/9/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Las Vegas 51's 9-3:

Justin Christian(LF)- 4 for 5, HR(1). BA= .462.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 3 for 4. BA= .421.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 3 for 4, 2 HR(2). BA= .412.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.00.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels staved off the Bowie Baysox 5-4:

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(1), SB(1). BA= .556.
Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 4, SB(1). BA= .316.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 3, 2B, SB(1). BA= .333.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(2). ERA= 0.00.

Dominguez is red hot. Is Monell going to force someone to notice him this year? Kickham had a Durtyesque start. Looks like Maday is the closer in Richmond.

High A High Desert Mavericks held off the San Jose Giants 6-5:

Adam Duvall(DH)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .200.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 4.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 6/0.
Josh Osich- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 0.00.

Duvall's bat has been quiet. Hopefully this game gets it going.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Charleston River Dogs:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 3 for 4, 3B, BB, SB(2). BA= .238.
Chuckie Jones(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .091.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .250.
Joseph Biagini(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.60.

Chuckie Jones got just his 2'nd hit of the season, but it was a longball. He is playing CF in Augusta in preference to Shawn Payne. Biagini is a local kid from the Bay Area who went to college at UC Davis. Obviously a bit on the raw side. Love the K's, hate the walks for Arnold.

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Down on the Farm: 4/8/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Tucson Padres 4-1:

Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .294.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .563.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .200.
Andrew Kown(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.80.
Travis Blackley(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Roger K is red hot. 4 dominant innings from Blackley.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A San Jose Giants crushed the Modesto Nuts again 8-0:

Ricky Oropesa(DH)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SF. BA= .286.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .286.
Bobby Haney(2B)- 4 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .833.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

What a pleasure to get to write Ricky Oropesa's name into the highlights! Schumer pitched 6 no-hit innings. I won't get to scout him on the Giants swing through High Desert.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets downed the Savannah Sand Gnats 8-5:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(1). BA= .385.
Jose Cuevas(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .375.
Eric Sim(C)- 1 for 1, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .222.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 2, 2B, 3B, BB, SB(2). BA= .417.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, 2 HBP, WP, Balk
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 4.50.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

A sparkling game and solid start for Shawn Payne. Crick had a successful, but wild Low A debut. Bandilla made his pro debut.

Some interesting transactions on the minor league front listed in BA:

Releases: Michael Main, Addison Proszek, Aaron King, David Quinowski, Brice Cutspec, Julio Izturis, Raynor Campbell, Jose De La Cruz, Ryan Scoma, James Simmons.

DL: Andrew Berger, Boof Bonser, Jose Casilla, Hector Correa, Jake Dunnington, Scott Munter, Andy Reichard, Chris Wilson, Craig Clark, Kelvin Marte, Dan Burkhart, Myles Schroder, Eliezer Zambrano, Brock Bond, Garrett Buechele, Juan Ciriaco, Ryan Lormand, Devin Harris, Nick Liles, Rafael Rodriguez.

AAA Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Tucson Padres 11-4:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .308
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 4 for 5, HR(1). BA= .538.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .364.

Peguero is off to a bit of a slow start, but the other true prospects in the Fresno lineup are going great, especially Roger K, who I think is a real sleeper.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the New Britain Rock Cats 3-1 in 12 innings:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, SF, CS(1). BA= .462.
Adrianza(.250), Dominguez(.429), Perez(.267), Mayora(.200), and Cavan(.214)- 2 hits each.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 10/3. ERA= 0.00
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 0.00.

Brown got both of his hits off Jason Marquis, a very crafty veteran MLB pitcher. Still a bit sloppy on the basepaths. Heston keeps his extreme GB ways going in AA. Multiple innings from the Boch.

High A Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 4-2:

Andrew Susac(C)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .231.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .400.

Panik's experience in short season ball is holding him in good stead.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats trounced the Augusta Greenjackets 7-1:

Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 0 K'. ERA= 20.25.
Kevin Couture(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA- 0.00.
Keith Bilodeau(RHP)- 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA- 4.50.
Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA- 0.00.

Jumping from the DSL to Low A is huge. Mejia may need some seasoning in Arizona.

AAA Tucson Padres overtook the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 3, BB, SB(1).
Jackson Williams(C)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .250.
Brian Burres(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.18.

Christian came in for Graham in the bottom of the first. Injury? Burres is probably the Giants 6'th starter right now.

AA First Game New Britain Rock Cats downed the Flying Squirrels 6-2:

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 3, 2 2B. BA= 571. Chris D is starting out hot. He went 0 for 3 in game 2 to lower his BA to .400.

Game 2: New Britain Rock Cats topped the Squirrels 4-1:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 3. BA= .444. Brown is starting out on the right track.

High A San Jose Giants crushed the Modesto Nuts 15-3:

Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .200.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .333.
Luke Anders(DH)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(1). BA= .375.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 5. BA= .375.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB. BA= .286.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .250.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.60.
Josh Osich- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00
Luis Rojas- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00. 22 yo RHP.

Anders' dinger was with the bases loaded. 2 HR's in 2 days for Parker who is repeating the level. Jurica is also repeating the level, has moved to 2B. Looks like Osich is starting out in the bullpen. I think Rojas came along with Pagan from the Mets.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets came from behind to edge the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-5:

Jose Cuevas(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .222.
Ben Thomas(1B)- 2 for 4. 2B. BA= .429.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 3, SB(1). BA= .286.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

I'm excited about the Augusta rotation. Marlowe has a successful start. Hall is a hard throwing sleeper who has only been pitching for a couple of years.

Down on the Farm: 4/5/2012

Ha! The minor leagues got started before the big club. How do you like that?

AAA Fresno Grizzlies shut out the Tucson Padres 3-0.

Tyler Graham(CF)- 2 for 4. BA= .500.

Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .500. I think Roger K is going to break out this year.

Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .500.

Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.00. I'd like to see fewer BB's, but otherwise, Vogey seems to be ready.

Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1). ERA= 0.00. He gave up a couple of hits, but got out of the inning with the Save.

AA New Britain Rock Cats edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2.

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, BB, PO. BA= .333. IMO, one thing Gary Brown really needs to work on is tightening up his running game. He gets thrown out and picked off way too often.

Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, Assist(Beresford at 2B). BA= .500. Dominguez played LF. Hopefully his AA experience for half a season last year will give him a leg up on the league this year.

Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.73.

Chris Gloor(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Jake Dunning(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

High A San Jose Giants held of a late rally by the Modesto Nuts for a 4-3 win.

Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB. BA= .500.

Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333. Ricky gets an RBI in his first official professional AB.

Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .250, Assist(K Parker at 2'nd base).

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/4. ERA= 0.00. This can't be right, but the boxscore says Sanford threw just 26 Pitches in his 6 innings of work.

Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats squeaked past the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2.

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 5, 3B. BA= .400. Willoughby is repeating the league.

Ben Thomas(1B)- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .333.

Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, 2 HBP, GO/AO= 5/0. ERA= 3.86. Blackburn was dominating for the first 4 innings before running into trouble in the 5'th. Derek Law allowed one of his inherited runners to score.

If you don't think MLB has entered an fairly extreme pitcher's era, take a look at the boxscores around the league from today's games. The two games in Japan and one yesterday weren't exactly slugfests either.

Down on the Farm: Dominican Dandies

Randy Ortiz, 2B. 5'11", 170 lbs. BD: 6/15/1993. B-R, T-R.

DSL: .292/.396/.363, 19 SB.

Love both the BA/OBP/SB combination. I'm guessing we see him in Arizona this year?

Carlos Cartegena, OF. 6'2", 190 lbs. BD: 12/22/1993. B-R, T-R.

DSL: .147/.291/.231, 2 HR.

6 figure bonus baby. Love his size. BA was frightfully low, but he did draw walks and 2 HR in the DSL is not nothing. Only 8 players on the DSL Giants hit even 1 HR and the max was 4.

Marvin Barrios, RHP. 6'3", 145 lbs. BD: 9/23/1992.

DSL: 0-0, 0.00, 7.2 IP, 3 BB, 5 K's.

6 figure bonus baby a couple of years ago. Made last appearance on June 4. Have to wonder if that frame is up to the rigors of pitching in professional ball.

Royel Astacio, 3B. 6'2", 197 lbs. BD: 9/27/1993. B-S, T-R.

.218/.371/.306, 2 HR, 5 SB in 170 AB.

Don't know much about him, but like his size, switch hitting, and OBP. Showed a whiff of power with 9 2B and 2 dingers.

Simon Mercedes, RHP. Apparently no longer with the organization. It seems he got busted for the false identity thing and is contract was voided.

Down on the Farm: Honorable Mention Late Adds

NIck Liles, OF. 6'0", 165 lbs. BD: 7/23/1987. B-R, T-R.

High A: .281/.317/.372, 6 SB.

AAA: .417/.462/.500 in 12 AB.

Liles is an older prospect who hits for average, but doesn't draw many walks and has little power. I thought he looked bigger than his listed size when I saw him play for San Jose last year.

Jason Stevenson, LHP. 6'1", 175 lbs. BD: 8/8/1981.

AA: 1-0, 1.29, 7 IP, 2 BB, 7 K's.

AAA: 1-0, 5.56, 11.1 IP, 5 BB, 9 K's.

Formerly failed prospect signed midseason last year out of Indy ball. Has overcome a lot of personal problems. Gotta root for a guy like that!

Juan Perez, OF. 5'11", 185 lbs. BD: 11/13/1986. B-R, T-R.

AA: .256/.303/.381, 25 2B, 10 3B!, 4 HR, 22 SB.

DWL: .290/.320/.389, 13 SB in 162 AB.

After taking another look at Perez' numbers from last year, he put them up in a very tough environment for hitters as is the DWL. Still has a chance to be a reserve OF in the right situation.

Shawn Sanford, RHP. 6'0", 200 lbs. BD: 8/28/1988.

Low A: 10-10, 2.55, 169.2 IP, 30 BB, 107 K's, GO/AO= 1.63.

The story of his dad's struggle with colon cancer and how it affected Shawn led me to take another look at him. As long as he can keep the ball on the ground and keep his walk rates down, he has a chance to keep moving up.

Taylor Rogers, RHP. 6'4", 200 lbs. BD: 6/5/1987.

Low A: 12-10, 2.91, 154.2 IP, 38 BB, 86 K's, GO/AO= 2.11.

Another guy who will have to prove he can make older hitters put the ball on the ground, but why not give him an honorable mention? His height will help him.

Devin Harris, OF. 6'3", 225 lbs. BD: 4/23/1988. B-R, T-R.

Low A: .231/.310/.414, 15 HR, 6 SB.

Fangraphs had a recent article about the vanishing RH hitting corner OF. Harris can take a walk and has some HR pop in his bat. Kind of a poor man's Pat Burrell, if you will. Longshot, but hey...I liked him in college and am not going to give up on him just yet.

Ryan Bradley, LHP. 6'1", 180 lbs. BD: 7/15/1988.

Low A: 4-2, 4.31, 79.1 IP, 32 BB, 48 K, GO/AO= 1.50.

Numbers are unimpressive, but he's a LHP and the son of the Giants minor league pitching coordinator so I figure he's going to get his chances.

Gus Benusa, OF. 6'1", 190 lbs. BD: 1/30/1991. B-L, T-L.

Rookie AZL: .297/.338/.419, 1 HR, 3 SB in 74 AB.

HS draftee has been a bit of an enigma so far. Made his debut in 2009 and then missed all of 2010. Caught fire at the end of last season hitting .313/.389/.500 over his last 10 games.

Stephen Yarrow, 3B/1B. 6'3", 215 lbs. BD: 11/30/1988. B-L, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .286/.412/.371
AAA: .333/.429/.333 in 6 AB.
College(USF): .310/.405/.635, 16 HR.

Signed as an undrafted FA, put up nice BA's and even better OBP's but did not show the power he had in college.

Joe Biagini, RHP. 6'4", 215 lbs. BD: 5/29/1990

DNP
College(UC Davis): 3-1, 7.47, 15.2 IP, 9 BB, 18 K's.
Cape Cod League: 1.31, 20.2 IP, 6 BB, 21 K's.

Son of a former Giants minor leaguer. Being a draft eligible sophomore probably helped him get a $175 K bonus out of the 26'th round, but you have to figure he's got something the Giants want too. Terrific size. Reportedly shined in the fall instructional league.

Travious Relaford, SS. No info.

DNP

Throwing a bone to the Shank with this one. 44'th round pick. Cousin of Desi Relaford. Raw in all phases of the game but has the athleticism to stick at SS.

Down on the Farm: Honorable Mention Part VIII

Luis Angeles, RHP. 6'0", 165 lbs. BD: 12/15/1989.

2-1, 7.43, 23 IP, 7 BB, 19 K's.

Smallish RHP out of the DSL. Had a 1.85 ERA there last year. Actually improved his K rate in Arizona in a small sample size.

Paul Davis, RHP. 6'2", 210 lbs. BD: 1/29/1990.

Rookie AZL: 0-0, 3.44, 36.2 IP, 11 BB, 27 K.
Short Season: 1-0, 1.64, 11 IP, 3 BB, 9 K's.
College(Florida Atlantic): 10-1, 2.87, 100.1 IP, 34 BB, 73 K's.

Successful college starter with decent peripherals.

Brian Maloney, LHP. 6'0", 176 lbs. BD: 10/4/1988.

Rookie AZL: 1-0, 3.55, 12.2 IP, 5 BB, 21 K's.
Short Season: 0-1, 18.00, 5 IP, 11 BB, 7 K's.
College(Franklin Pierce): 8-4, 1.52, 88.2 IP, 24 BB, 115 K's.

Small college pitchability LHP with FB topping at 88 MPH. Struggled after promotion to Salem-Keizer in small sample size.

Derek Law, RHP. 6'3", 218 lbs. BD: 9/14/1990.

Rookie AZL: 0-0, 2.50, 18 IP, 2 BB, 19 K's, 4 Saves.
Miami Dade JC: 8-5, 2.35, 92 IP, 16 BB, 121 K's.

Terrific ratios despite reports of rough arm action and a hard delivery. FB goes 89-93 MPH. Probably profiles as a setup man.

Danny Sandbrink, RHP. 6'2", 195 lbs. BD: 6/23/1989.

Rookie AZL: 1-0, 2.53, 21.1 IP, 3 BB, 21 K, GO/AO= 1.92.
College(Stanford): 4-1, 3.39, 61 IP, 15 BB, 45 K's.

42'nd round pick out of Stanford. No scouting report. Seems to be an excellent control pitcher. AZL not much of a test.

Ryan Bean, RHP. 6'4", 225 lbs. BD: 3/9/1990.

Rookie AZL: 2-1, 4.15, 21.2 IP, 15 BB, 28 K's.
Low A: 0-0, 5.40, 3.1 IP, 2 BB, 4 K's.

Thanks to a reader for the tip on Bean who looks like a beast in the video I was able to find. It shows him doing an interesting workout regimen followed by some pitching in a cage. Mid 90's heat? Drafted out of JC ball in 17'th round, 2010.

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Down on the Farm: Honorable Mention Part VII

Jose Cuevas, 3B. 6'2", 190 lbs. BD: 4/5/1988. B-R, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .337/.403/.639, 9 HR, 9 SB.

Cuevas was drafted in round 29, 2010 draft out of NAIA Lee University. He only got into a few games that summer with unimpressive results. He returned to the AZL in 2011 and won the league MVP award. He was way old for the league, but coming out of such a small school, it may have been an appropriate placement. He was a SS in college, has a strong arm, excellent range some speed and power. Odds are against him, but stranger things have happened. He does seem to have some tools.

Cristian Paulino, 3B. 5'10", 168 lbs. BD: 9/4/1991. B-R, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .277/.379/.438, 1 HR, 10 SB.

Paulino seems like kind of a dynamic player out of the DSL with solid plate discipline, a hint of power and some speed. His numbers were not as impressive as Cuevas', but he was much more age-appropriate for the league. He was red hot at the end of the season hitting .345 over his last 10 games including one huge game where he went 5 for 6 with 3 doubles and 2 SB's. Who starts at 3B for Augusta this year, Buechele, Cuevas or Paulino?

Christian Diaz, OF. 6'1", 170 lbs. BD: 7/15/1993. B-L, T-L.

Rookie AZL: .231/.375, .308 in 13 AB.

Diaz was one of the Puerto Rican contingent drafted by the Giants last year. He really only made a cameo appearance. I would expect to see him back in the AZL this year after extended spring training. He would still be very age-appropriate for the league.

Edwin Escobar, LHP. 6'1", 185 lbs. BD: 4/22/1992.

Rookie AZL: 2-4, 5.09, 46 IP, 17 BB, 42 K's.

VWL: 0-1, 5.73, 22 IP, 11 BB, 12 K's.

Escobar took a step backwards last season as he had pitched decently in Salem-Keizer in 2010. His K and BB ratios weren't bad though and he's still fairly young. His lefthandedness will buy him some extra time too.

Miguel Ferrer, RHP. 6'3", 168 lbs. BD: 8/7/1990.

Rookie AZL: 6-1, 1.53, 29.1 IP, 7 BB, 36 K's, GO/AO= 1.48.

Ferrer pitched well in his first time pitching in the USA after laboring for 3 seasons in the DSL. ERA= 0.49 over his last 10 appearances. I would expect to see him in Augusta this season.

Down on the Farm: Honorable Mention Part VI

Mike Merganthaler, OF. 6'4", 210 lbs. BD: 1/6/1989. B-L, T-L.

Rookie AZL: .388/.476/.592, 4 HR, 5 SB in 103 AB.
College(Richmond): .307/.390/.496, 7 HR, 18 SB in 228 AB.

Merganthaler was drafted in round 32. He was too old for the Arizona League, so you can discount those numbers, but he's got a projectable frame and enough athleticism and speed to steal bases and play CF. A sleeper to watch in 2012.

Kelby Tomlinson, SS. 6'2", 180 lbs. BD: 6/16/1990. B-R, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .357/.417/.543, 10 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 11 SB in 140 AB.
College(Texas Tech): .307/.415/.372, 21 SB.

Again, too old and advanced for the Arizona League, but can play SS and has some projection left in his body.

Eric Sim, C. 6'2", 215 lbs. BD: 1/3/1989. B-R, T-R.

Rookie AZL: .352/.438/.586, 6 HR, 5 SB in 145 AB.

Another AZL greybeard, he hit just .108 there in 2010 in just 37 AB. Will have to prove it at higher levels now.

Christian Otero, SS. No info

DNP

Part of the Puerto Rican HS contingent drafted in 2011. Projected as more likely to stick at SS than Jean Delgado. Possibly a weak bat.

Major Elliot Blair, OF. 6'1", 181 lbs. 2/3/1988. B-R, T-R

Rookie AZL: .333/.421/.500, 8 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 6 SB in 114 AB.
College(Oklahoma): .333/.405/.485, HR in 33 AB.

Blair is a bit of a mystery. In 4 years of college ball, he only got a total of 111 AB's, but hit .359 with 7 HR and 11 SB's. He tore an ACL in sophomore season and had a concussion his junior season. He came off he bench his senior season. The Giants drafted Garrett Buechele from Oklahoma, so I presume the guy who scouted him saw something he liked in Blair. Another intriguing sleeper candidate.
