Down on the Farm: 05-12-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies mauled the New Orleans Zephyrs 7-1:

Buster Posey- 3 for 5, 3 2B. BA= .355.
Brett Pill- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(4). BA= .317.
Madison Bumgarner- 2 for 3. BA= .375
Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 6/6.
Henry Sosa- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.86.
Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

What a great game for Giants prospect watchers! Madison Bumgarner is a hitter too! I guess if the pitching thing doesn't pan out, he can pull a Rick Ankiel! While not dominant, tonight's start showed a lessened probability of that being necessary. Posey seems to have found the range with his bat. Harder to tell if he's ready behind the plate.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Bowie Baysox 5-0:

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .231.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 5. BA= .250.
Roger Kieschnick- 2 for 3, 2 HR(3), 2 BB. BA= .297.
Daryl Maday- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.54.
Andy Sisco- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.65.
Rafael Cova- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Even more impressive than Kieschnick's power surge is the BA close to .300. So far, of last year's San Jose stars, Roger has made the smoothest transition to AA. Thomas Neal is hitting .302 over his last 10 games.

High A San Jose Giants lost to the Visalia Rawhide 3-2 in 10 innings:

Freddy Sanchez- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .500.
Justin Fitzgerald- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K's, GO/AO= 14/7. ERA= 1.20.

Low A Charleston River Dogs beat the Augusta Greenjackets 6-4:

Chris Dominguez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .276.
Luke Anders- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .287.
Zack Wheeler- 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 6.53.

Speed bump for young Zack.

  1. Doc, I wonder where we can get recent reports on Bumgarner's secondary pitchers. I guess his strikeout numbers would give us a bit of an indication, but not much more than that. When he came up last year, I remember being more impressed by his ability to effectively move around his fastball -- a la Jerome Williams when he was successful -- than to to do much of anything else. I only hope that he's not rushed up if some regained velocity on his fastball were to mean success in AAA, but without the necessary development on his secondary pitches. He's still so young after all.

  2. Btw, Bumgarner had a runner on second thrown out at home, saving him a run on his ERA after he gave up a hit with a man on second.

  3. Still a relatively low sample size, but Bumgarner is definitely getting more ground ball outs dating back to around the time of his callup late last year. I would deduce that he has added a two seam or sinking fastball to the 4 seamer he relied on in Augusta. He's going to get fewer K's with the two seamer, but hopefully it makes him a better and more durable pitcher in the long run.

I agree that the worst thing in the world would be to rush him up, even if he's pitching well and Wellemeyer isn't getting the job done. Give Joey, Pucetas or Hacker or Horacio Ramirez a chance first.
