Down on the Farm: 05-02-2010

There was some strong pitching on the farm today.

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Sacramento River Cats 4-2:

Brock Bond- 2 for 4. BA= .306.
Buster Posey- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .333.
Ryan Rohlinger- 1 for 1, HR(2), 2 BB, HBP. BA= .329.
Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 5.25.
Steve Edlefsen- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.23.

Posey had been in a mini-slump. Bumgarner has a GO/AO> 1 so far this year. Last year, he was a fairly extreme flyball pitcher. I would deduce that he is working on developing a two seam fastball to go with the 4 seamer. That could explain some of the velocity loss as two seam FB's tend to be 2-3 MPH slower than 4 seamers.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels beat the Bowie Baysox 4-1:

Nick Noonan- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .218.
Daryl Maday- 6 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.19.
Andy Sisco- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.89.
Tony Pena- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(3). ERA= 0.69.

Maday gave up a lot of hits. Sisco had a dominant outing. Pena has looked good in the closer's role so far.

High A The Modesto Nuts cracked a scoreless tie with 8 runs in the top of the ninth inning winning the game 8-1:

Charlie Culberson- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .203.
Aaron King- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 5.19.
Jason Stoffel- 0.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 7.71.

Nice line from Culberson, but too little too late. King had a dominant start, albeit too short to qualify as a QS. He had been struggling. Hopefully this was a breakout game for him. Stoffel's outing was disastrous. He had been unscored upon prior to this game.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets were idle as there was only one game played in the SAL.

  1. Under what circumstance would you leave a pitcher in there to take that kind of pounding, especially a closer?

  2. I agree with Anonymous; given any other option, why would you do that to a young pitcher?
