Game Wrap 05-18-2010: Giants 7 Padres 6

The Giants battled it out for 12 innings last night and finally, at long last, got a W against a team that had seemed to get into their heads and bedeviled them to 7 losses in 7 head-to-head meetings so far. Key lines:

Aaron Rowand- 3 for 7, 2B. Multihit game for Gamer who at one point had his BA down below .260.

Andres Torres- 2 for 5, HR(2). I don't have much faith the Torres can keep this up for a full season, but hey, I'm riding with it now. Apparently Bruce Bochy is too. In addition to the two hits, Torres smoked another ball to the deepest part of right CF that Venable made a running catch on. Torres also threw out a runner at 2B from the OF.

Eli Whiteside- 2 for 6. BA= .325. Another guy I have my doubts about how long he can keep it up, but good for him, for now.

Matt Downs- 3 for 5, 2B. Matt has been hitting the ball hard but most of them have been finding gloves. They fell in tonight and he was one of the stars of the game.

Jonathan Sanchez- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. It was the best of times and worst of times for Durty last night as he retired the first 12 batters he faced, and quite easily, sending me into visions of a perfecto. He's obviously capable! Then the wheels came off in the 5'th. After Headley led off with a hit, the Pads just kept punching single after single. Sanchez finally onlly got out of the inning when a runner was trapped between first and second and tagged out in a rundown. To his credit, Sanchez came back and pitched a scoreless 6'th, but I figured the game was lost at that point.

Jeremy Affeldt- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. Affeldt won this game by preserving the rest of the bullpen to go into extra innings. Basically the Padres ran out of pitchers first!

Medders, Mota, Runzler- 1 IP, 0 Runs each.

Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(10). Hey, he has to do it his way, but he gets it done.....most of the time.

Even when they have lost this year, the Giants have generally battled it to the end. This time it paid off. There may have been a game or two where the Giants folded their tents early, but I can't remember any.

This win puts the Giants record at 22-16 0.5 games behind the Pads and keeps them 0.5 games up on the Dodgers who won again.

Around the League: The Dodgers kept on winning with their 9'th win in a row, this time over the 'Stros 7-3. Colorado slipped back below .500 with a 6-2 loss to the Cubs. Arizona fell further into last place with an 8-0 loss to the Marlins.

The Giants now go to Arizona to take on the D'Backs with Wellemeyer and Tim Lincecum getting the starts.

  1. I think that the Rockies lost to the Cub's last night.

And the bums from LA have won 9 straight.

  2. Yeah, I meant to say Colorado lost 6-2 to the Cubs. It was early this morning when I wrote it and I don't think I was fully awake yet. Corrected!
