Down on the Farm: 05-04-2010

Fresno Grizzlies outhit the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 9-6:

Ryan Rohlinger- 3 for 4, HBP. BA= .350.
Brett Pill- 3 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .282.
Jesus Guzman- 3 for 4, HR(2). BA= .239.
Joe Martinez- 2 for 3. BA= .333.
Joe Martinez- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 12/2. ERA= 3.81.
Waldis Joaquin- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.
Alex Hinshaw- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 9.00.
Denny Bautista- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.19.

Nice to see Brett Pill's bat heating up. Excellent start for Joey Martinez in a hostile pitching environment, especially being able to keep the ball on the ground. Gotta wonder if Alex Hinshaw is going to get his career turned around at this point.

AA Altoona Curve dominated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-1:

No offense worth reporting.
Craig Clark- 3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.63.
Craig Whitaker- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 1.54.

That his ERA is still under 5 after this game tells you that Clark has pitched pretty well up to now. We'll give him a pass on this one. Whitaker is showing some real dominance that we've never seen from him before.

Low A(Game 1) Augusta Greenjackets beat the Greenville Drive 3-1:

Ryan Cavan- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .313.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .273.
Jorge Bucardo- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/0. ERA= 2.67.
Jason Jarvis- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(6). ERA= 3.75.

Dominguez drove in all 3 runs. Bucardo had the K's along with the extreme GB tendency.

High A Jason Stoffel got shelled for the second game in a row as the Stockton Ports scored 4 in the bottom of the 9'th inning to edge the San Jose Giants 8-7:

Francisco Peguero- 2 for 5, HR2), SB(13). BA= .278.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 1, 2B, 4 BB's! BA= .408. OBP= .522!
Johnny Monell- 2 for 4, HR(2). BA= .235.
Charlie Culberson- 2 for 5. BA= .219.
Eric Surkamp- 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.10.
Joe Paterson- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jason Stoffel- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 9.82.

Hey, everybody who's been bemoaning the Giants lack of plate discipline, it looks like we've found our patron saint in Brandon Belt. My goodness! If Kevin Youkilis is the Greek God of Walks, what is Belt? Joe Paterson gets sent down from AA for some reason. Stoffel probably needs to move out of the closer role until he gets whatever the problem is figured out.

Low A(Game 2) Augusta Greenjackets nipped the Greenville Drive 1-0.

Evan Crawford- 2 for 3, SB(3). BA= .220.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 3. BA= .284.
Brian Salsbury- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 5.13.

Dominguez goes 4 for 6 on the day. Salsbury had pitched 6 innings of no-hit ball in his first start and a QS in his second, then suffered two consecutive shellings. Nice recovery game today.

  1. Wow, after 7 years Craig (Roger) Whitaker might finally deliver.

Tighten the Belt! Wow, yeah, the Giants God of Walk seems pretty appropriate right now. How has his dominance so far changed your impression of his ranking among Giants prospects?

  2. Any idea if his walks are of the intentional variety? He is killing the ball now, so it may simply be that single A has decided to tell the Giants that he no longer belongs there.

  3. One of his 4 walks was intentional, although they may be pitching around him and he's preferring to take the walks than swing at slop. Biery hit behind him last night and is a pretty good hitter in his own right, but I can see why the other teams might have decided to force someone else in their lineup to beat them. If that continues, the Giants might be forced to promote him just so he can see some hittable pitches.

I forgot Belt in my preseason top 50 prospect list. I probably would have listed him somewhere between 35 and 50. Yeah, he'd definitely be higher now, but let's see a whole season before we get too excited.

Whitaker: I guess if you are "raw as rain" when you are drafted, it just might take 7 years to get it right. I think Whitaker has been slowed by some nagging injuries in his first few seasons too. I'd have to guess that he's finally found a secondary pitch he can control that lets him put the hammer down for the K. Could be interesting!
