Down on the Farm: 05-29-2010

AAA The Buster Poseyless Fresno Grizzlies lost to the Salt Lake City Bees 8-7:

Matt Downs- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(1). BA= .295.
Brett Pill- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(5). BA= .284.
Steve Holm- 2 for 4, HR(3). BA= .203.
Steve Edlefsen- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.17.
Eric Hacker- 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.83.

The Giants signed Pat "The Bat" Burrell to a minor league deal. We should be seeing his name in the Fresno box scores soon. SLC is a tough place to pitch, but it would seem that Bumgarner has moved ahead of Eric Hacker as next in line starter to be called up.

AA RIchmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Bowie Baysox 7-3:

Darren Ford- 3 for 5. BA= .247.
Eddy Martinez-Esteve- 0 for 4. BA= .000.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .256.
David Mixon- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 8/2. ERA= 3.05.

A Eddy M-E sighting! Must be coming off the DL or something? Conor Gillaspie is hitting .375 over his last 10 games. Another solid effort by Mixon.

High A San Jose Giants topped the Stockton Ports 4-2:

Juan Perez- 1 for 5, HR(5). BA= .337.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 2, 3B, 2 BB, SB(11). BA= .376.
Craig Westcott- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.40.
Edwin Quirarte- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.83.

Belt continues to have busy lines for the little Giants.

Low A Augusta defeated the Asheville Tourists 7-5 in 13 innings:

Chris Dominguez- 4 for 7, 2B, 2 HR(8). BA= .271.
Evan Crawford- 0 for 6, 4 K's. BA= .239.
Jose Valdez- 5.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.78.
Ryan Verdugo- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.84.

Huge game for Dominguez. Evan Crawford had his BA up in the .270's just a week or so ago. He's in a brutal slump now. Valdez got the start and was disappointing. Verdugo had a dominant relief appearance. Tyler Matzek got the start for Asheville, a Colorado affiliate: 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.00. Zack Wheeler's last appearance was May 19. That was a very good start with 6 IP, 0 R, 7 K's. I found a reference on 22 gigantes.com blog that he is on the 7 day DL with a fingernail problem. Doesn't sound too serious. Whew!

  1. Belt needs to be promoted to Richmond. It seems like he is getting multiple walks every game in SJ. the A pitchers are not giving him anything to hit...

  2. Yes, I tend to agree with Belt needing promotion. Maybe Dominguez could come up to San Jose?

  3. Yeah, I've been surprised that Belt wasn't promoted yet either, particularly since he was a college player. Is there a 1B blocking his way in AA? I don't recall there being one that should block him, unless they started playing EME at 1B in AA.

  4. It seems like San Jose stats are misleading. I wonder if this is the case in all A+ leagues. We have countless kids who crush pitching when in San Jose then bomb when they get up to Richmond or Shreveport/Connecticut before that . EME, Crawford and Neal are a few of the more recent examples.

  5. If I am not mistaken, D'Alessio is starting 1B in Richmond. I would consider Belt a higher prospect, so D'Alessio would need to heed, IMHO...

  6. The California league is a pretty extreme hitter's league, so yes, batting averages and power numbers tend to be inflated there. San Jose plays in a neutral park and it actually suppresses power numbers from LH hitters due to a headwind coming in from RF, or so I'm told. The two high desert parks in SoCal, Lancaster and High Desert in Adelanto are ridiculously favorable to hitters due to dry air, high altitude and winds that tend to blow out.
