"When the Giants Come to Town..." is my blog intended to chronicle my thoughts on San Francisco Giants baseball. My special interest is in prospects and the farm system, but of course, will comment on all aspects of the San Francisco Giants. I will also comment on baseball in general, particularly from a fantasy baseball perspective. I hope you will find the site informative, and invite you to join in the discussion.
All full season leagues were idle as usual on Mondays.
ACL: Giants defeated the Royals 5-1.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats topped the Oklahoma City Comets 6-5.
The Giants lineup sputtered in futility, spoiling a Webb Gem and apparently causing frustrations to boil over onto the field in the 9'th inning. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt LF- 2 for 4, RBI. BA= .298. 6'th multi-hit game in a row for Schmitt who drove in the only Giants run with a oppo-field single to drive in Luis Arraez 2B who doubled with 2-outs in the third inning followed by a walk to Bryce Eldridge. Drew Gilbert CF had the only other Giants hit in the game for a total of just 4.
Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.35. I think it's time to put the term, "Caining" into storage and call it "Webbing." It's such a crime to waste the talent of a guy who has pitched his heart out for this team for 5+ seasons.
Tony Vitello Manager- In a story that shouldn't be a story because it should never have happened, Rafael Devers led off the 9'th inning with a walk. Tony Vitello sent Jonah Cox in to pinch run, a move the situation obviously called for. Devers objected and kept trying to waive Cox off the field. The rook was understandably confused and stood behind 1B coach Shane Robinson while it go sorted out. Devers eventually and grudgingly walked to the dugout but was visibly frustrated while his teammates tried to high five him. Apparently Devers thought the reason for the switch was a mildly sore hammy which he felt was good to go, but it was a move that totally needed to happen anyway, not because of anything wrong with Devers but because Jonah Cox has elite speed and was the best bet to score the tying run at that point. All I have to say is OMG! Can we please move out both Devers and Tony Vitello?
Ryan Gusto RHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 6.00. The Giants once again managed to make a pitcher who came in with a bloated ERA look like a Cy Young Award candidate. To top that off, after Gusto struck out Daniel Susac with a runner on first in the 5'th inning, Marlins Manager Clayton McCullough came out and replaced him with a LHP with 4 of the next 5 scheduled Giants batters hitting from the left side. I thought of two things: 1. The Giants don't have a LHP Vitello can trust in that situation and 2. That move combined with the way they call pitches from the dugout is a stark contrast between a team that actually has a pitching plan with one that is completely lost. BTW, McCullough was the Dodgers first base coach and widely respected as a potential future manager before taking the Marlins job, another stark contrast to think about.
The Giants leave behind a disaster series sweep against a team headed in the opposite direction. They get a day off to look at themselves in the mirror before starting a home series against the A's on Tuesday with Robbie Ray LHP facing Aaron Civale LHP who comes in with a 4.91 ERA.
AAA: Oklahoma City Comets shut out the Sacramento River Cats 6-0.
Trevor McDonald struggled with command and with sloppy defense in the early innings while the lineup failed to bring in runners in scoring position in another dispiriting loss. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 1 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .321. The top two batters in the lineup reached base 5 times in 10 PA's yet failed to figure in the scoring in large part because Matt Chapman 3B, Rafael Devers 1B and Willy Adames SS went a combined 0 for 13 out of the 3, 4 and 6 holes in the lineup, pun intended.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 R. BA= .331. Otto Lopez went 1 for 5 so Lee now trails him by just .001 in the batting race.
Casey Schmitt LF- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(16), R, 2 RBI. BA= .293. Mighty Casey is on some kind of fire. After 4 consecutive 2-hit games, he lit this one up for 3 XBH's.
Drew Gilbert CF- 3 for 4, 2B, RBI. BA= .234. I understand why a lot of fans find Gilbert annoying, but I like the kid. I hope he continues to get regular playing time. It's not like this season is going anywhere anyway and I think he can develop into the type of player other team's find annoying.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 5/2 GO/AO, 3 HBP. ERA= 4.93. McDonald's 2-seam FB was sailing armside which usually means he's dropping his arm and getting under the pitches. The result was a wild start which wasn't helped by 4 errors including one where he failed to find first base with his foot as he was covering a grounder hit to Devers.
Matt Gage LHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 3.96. Gage became the latest reliever to fail to keep the game close. Inherited runners are tough but a big part of a reliever's job is to strand them, especially if you area a lefty brought in to face a lefty batter.
J. T. Brubaker RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.75. Has anyone considered trying Brubaker as a SP? He must be better than the 6'th best option.
Logan Webb RHP tries to avoid a sweep tomorrow in a 10:40 AM PDT start time facing Ryan Gusto RHP who comes in with a 7.24 ERA.
AAA: Oklahoma City Comets downed the Sacramento River Cats 7-3.
Landen Roupp pitched a Quality Start but in a familiar story line, the bullpen couldn't hold a lead and the lineup struggled to score in the later innings. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 3, HR(11), BB, R, RBI. ERA= .244. Marlins Park is a tough place to hit and it showed in multiple warning track outs. Much as we have criticized Devers, he is the one guy on this team who can muscle one out of pretty much any park. His solo HR got the Giants tied the score in the 6'th inning. Bryce Eldridge will probably grow into that kind of hitter but he's not quite there yet.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4). BA= .328. Lee has turned into quite the hit machine. He still trails Otto Lopez, who went 1 for 4, by .006 in the batting race.
Casey Schmitt LF- 2 for 4, RBI. BA= .286. Fourth 2-hit game in a row for Casey Schmitt.
Daniel Susac C- 1 for 3, SF, RBI. BA= .287. Susac just missed a grand slam HR when the Marlins LF caught his drive just above the short 7-foot wall in LF. Willy Adames scored the Giants first run on the Sac Fly.
Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's, 7/3 GO/AO. ERA= 4.15. A rare Quality Start for Giants SP's.
Sam Hentges- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.84. Hentges got the 7'th inning with a 3-2 lead and couldn't hold it. The Giants lineup was not able to come back.
Trevor McDonald RHP tries to even the series tomorrow facing Max Meyer RHP who comes in with a 7-0 record and a 2.75 ERA. Meyer is a former first round draft pick, #3 overall, in 2020. If you want great homegrown pitching, you have to be willing to draft it in the first round. Reminder that Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum and Madison Bumgarner were all first round draft picks for the Giants.
Giants vs Braves game scheduled for 6/18/2026 was postponed due to rain associated with a tropical storm and rescheduled for August 31.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats outscored the Oklahoma City Comets 9-6.
The Giants lineup hit 3 home runs to back a solid start by Carson Whisenhunt and the bullpen hung on. While technically the games were played on separate days, it felt like the Giants swept a doubleheader. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 4, HR(3), BB, 2 R, 4 RBI. BA= .326. Arraez' line while batting at the top of the order over the the two games: 5 for 9, 2B, HR, BB, 4 R, 4 RBI. Maybe he should bat leadoff permanently?
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 5, HR(6), R, RBI. BA= .319. Eldridge's line for the two games: 3 for 9, HR, BB. He has an 8-game hit streak with 4 multi-hit games in that span. He has 6 BB's and 4 K's in the 8 games.
Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB, RBI. BA= .240. Devers had a nice two games going 3 for 7, 2 2B, HR, 2 BB. He is 6 for 14 over his last 4 games after going 1 for 19 in his previous 5.
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(13), R, RBI. BA= .229. Adames hit a solo HR in each of the two games. He usually hits better in the second half. I can see him hitting his usual 30 HR by the end of the season.
Casey Schmitt LF- 2 for 4. BA= .283. Three 2-hit games in a row for Casey.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.60. Whiz looks noticeably bigger and stronger this year. He pitched 5 shut out innings before allowing 3 straight hits to open the 6'th. These games were played under doubleheader rules and he was the 27'th man for the second game. He was optioned back to AAA immediately after.
J. T. Brubaker RHP, Sam Hentges LHP and Ryan Walker RHP pitched a scoreless inning each. Brubaker allowed an inherited runner to score on a sac fly. Matt Gage LHP was called on to pitch the 9'th in a non-save situation but he turned it into one allowing 3 runs in 0.1 IP. Tristan Beck and his 9.00 ERA were called on to get the last two outs and Save the game. His ERA went down to 8.31.
Game 3 of the series is scheduled today but is threatened by a tropical storm. Landen Roupp RHP and Martin Perez LHP are the scheduled SP's.
Robbie Ray pitched 6.1 shut out innings in a Quality Start, except it was in relief due to the game suspension from 6/16 as the Giants took a 3-2 lead after 1.5 innings and turned it into an easy win. Key Lines:
The major league game was suspended after 1.5 innings with the Giants leading 3-2. Robbie Ray LHP will take the mound for the bottom of the second inning at 11 AM PDT today.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats blasted the Oklahoma City Comets 10-1.
Full season leagues were idle as usual on Mondays.
ACL: Giants edged out the Guardians 3-2.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats vs Sugarland Space Cowboys canceled due to rain.
AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Harrisburg Senators 5-4.
Logan Webb limited the Cubs to an unearned run through 8 innings and got enough run support to even his W-L record at 4-4. Key Lines:
Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), 2 BB, 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .261. I like Chapman in the leadoff role. He is third on the team in OBP and leads in walks by a large margin.
Casey Schmitt LF/1B- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP, SB(6), R. BA= .276. Schmitt made a throwing error costing Webb the unearned run but made up for it at the plate.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, R. BA= .331. Lee made a running catch to save a run and keep Webb in the game to finish the 8'th inning. He stays in second place in the race for the batting title.
Drew Gilbert CF/LF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, R, RBI. BA= .229. Gilbert has struggled, batting .179 over his last 7 games.
Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.46. Last two turns through the rotation, Webb is the only SP to get through at least 6 innings.
Giants have a travel day tomorrow and start a road trip in Atlanta against the Braves on Tuesday with Adrian Houser RHP facing Grant Holmes RHP who comes in with a 4.05 ERA.
AAA: Sugarland Space Cowboys beat the Sacramento River Cats 5-1.
The Giants were beaten in every phase of the game in close to a replay of Friday night's game.
Lineup: 7 hits from 6 different players. Devers went 2 for 4 with double. Luis Arraez tripled for the only RBI. Drew Gilbert drew 3 walks and a HBP and score the only run. 0 for 7 with RISP. 9 LOB. Overall as feckless a performance as we've seen all season and that's saying something.
Pitching: Trevor McDonald RHP left after his 92'd pitch and was still in the 4'th inning. Reiver Sanmartin LHP came in and walked the lefthanded hitting Michael Busch to drive in McDonald's 4'th ER of the evening. He then struck out the righthanded batting Seiya Suzuki. Is it just me or are this year's Giants terrible at taking advantage of L-R matchups, at least on the pitching side? If you are looking for a bright spot, 4 relievers, Hentges, Walker, Dylan Smith and Kilian pitched a scoreless frame each while allowing a total of 3 hits and 0 walks, although Hentges and Walker both hit a batter.
Defense: Adames kicked a ball 8'th inning for his 12'th error, second highest among qualified shortstops. His Fangraphs Def is -6.1, worst among qualified SS's.
I don't remember a team with a bigger gap between the whole and the sum of it's parts and not in a good way. This is just a very bad team and it's not completely clear why. In any given game it's truly debatable whether the hitting or the pitching was worse. It's gotten to the point where Kruk and Kuip sound completely disgusted in game after game, making you wonder if they know things they aren't saying.
Logan Webb RHP tries to stave off a series sweep today facing Ryan Rolison LHP who comes in with a 2.25 ERA.
AAA: Sugarland Space Cowboys edged out the Sacramento River Cats 4-3.
In the euphoria of Bryce Eldridge's walk-off grand slam, it was easy to forget the Giants trailed in that game 9-1 after 7 innings. The team that fell behind 9-1 is the one who showed up for this game and when Eldridge hit another home run in the 9'th inning, the bases were empty. Key Lines:
Bryce Eldridge DH- 3 for 4, HR(5). BA= .316. Luis Arraez had the only other Giants hit for a total of 4. The rest of the lineup went 0 for 22 with a walk.
Landen Roupp RHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.24. Roupp threw 105 pitches so by no means pitched well, but left the game trailing 2-0 with 2 runners on base, 2 outs and a lefthanded batter coming up. Which brings us to.......
Erik Miller LHP- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 4.58. Miller promptly gave up a 3-run homer to the lefty batter he was brought in to face after failing to retire a batter in his previous appearance June 9.
J. T. Brubaker RHP(3.00) pitched 2 scoreless inning. Sam Hentges LHP(1.74) and Ryan Walker RHP(6.06) added scoreless frames. Walker in particular looked like he had better command of a sharper slider after spending some time in AAA.
Trevor McDonald RHP tries to even the series tonight facing Ben Brown RHP who comes in with a 1.74 ERA.
AAA: Sugarland Space Cowboys shut out the Sacramento River Cats 2-0.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats edged out the Sugarland Space Cowboys 2-1.
The Giants scored 10 runs over the final two innings capped by a walk-off grand slam home run by Bryce Eldridge to end a wild afternoon game at Oracle Park. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 5, 2B, R. BA= .327. Another day at the office for Arraez.
Matt Chapman 3B- 4 for 5, 2B, 2 HR(6), 3 R, 3 RBI. BA= .262. Huge day for Chapman as he continues his power surge.
Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 4, HR(9), BB, 2 R, RBI. BA= .233. Other batters had bigger days but every run counted in this one.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 4, BB, 2 R. BA= .338. Otto Lopez is 2 for 4 today and raised is BA to .343.
Bryce Eldridge DH- 1 for 4, HR(4), BB, 2 R, 4 RBI. BA= .298. A Star Is Born! Youngest player in MLB history to hit a walk-off grand slam(Roberto Clemente previously held the record).
Daniel Susac C- 2 for 4, 2B, R, RBI. BA= .309. Susac cooled off from his unsustainable start but is still an upgrade over Bailey.
Robbie Ray LHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.42. Ray was having one of his better starts allowing 2 runs over the first 5 innings. Then, with 2 outs in the 6'th inning, he allowed three straight hits and another run. Carson Seymour came in and promptly allowed the two inherited runs to score. Seymour would go on to allow one of his own runs to score then 3 more in the 7'th to put the Giants behind 9-1, a seemingly insurmountable deficit.
Reiver Sanmartin LHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, 3/0 GO/AO. ERA= 4.50. Not a great line but the best of the afternoon for Giants pitchers.
The Giants get tomorrow off at home to regroup. They start a weekend series Friday against the Cubs with TBD facing TBD.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats edged out the Sugarland Space Cowboys 5-4.
The Giants used a familiar formula for futility: Failure to drive in runs and failure of the bullpen to keep it close in the late innings. Key Lines:
Full Season Leagues were all idle as usual on Mondays.
Logan Webb pitched in front of a gassed bullpen and it cost him a win and the Giants another crushing, late-inning loss. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 4 for 5, 2 R. BA= .333. Lee is now tied for 2'nd place in the batting race trailing only Forever Giant Otto Lopez SS who has a .336 BA. Lee scored 2 of the Giants 3 runs on a night they left 12 runners on base.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, R, RBI. BA= .287. Eldridge had an RBI and scored in the top of the 8'th inning but he also contributed to the run in the 6'th by advancing Jung Hoo Lee to 3B on a single. So Eldridge contributed to all 3 Giants runs.
Casey Schmitt LF, Luis Arraez 2B, Eldridge and Matt Chapman 3B had 2 hits each with Lee recording 4. In spite of 5 multi-hit games, the lineup managed just one run in the first 8 innings and 3 runs total.
The Giants used small-ball to get what should have been an insurance run in the 8'th inning with Eric Haase C bunted runners from 2B and 1B to 3B and 2B, then Jonah Cox PH/CF executed a squeeze to score Eldridge.
Logan Webb RHP- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's, 7/3 GO/AO. ERA= 3.88. Webb threw 99 pitches in 8 innings and appeared to have something left in the tank. Tony Vitello went with Keaton Winn RHP who appears to be the dedicated Closer now. It's just that Winn appeared in games the previous two days going a total of 2.2 IP while throwing 41 pitches. He probably should not have been available to pitch. What were Vitello's other options? He could have left Webb in there to finish it or he could have gone with Dylan Smith RHP who recorded the extra-inning Save the night before and ended up getting the final out in this game. While I think going with his Closer in the 9'th is ordinarily what 90% of Managers would do, you have to factor in Winn's fatigue and the general lack of reliability the Giants have had from the Closer role. On the postgame show, Shawn Estes was visibly emotional while saying Winn had no business being out there and Webb should have finished the game while admitting it was a hindsight opinion.
Keaton Winn RHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, HB, K. ERA= 3.23. Just for the record.
The Giants try to shake it off tonight with Adrian Houser RHP facing Andrew Alvarez LHP who comes in with a 3.54 ERA.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 5-3.
Matt Chapman singled in the designated runner in the top of the 10's and newcomer Dylan Smith held off the Cubs in the bottom of the inning for the Save. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 1 for 4, RBI. BA= .323. The Giants scored single runs in the 1'st and 10'th innings. The sequence in the first inning was a walk to Devers, a single by Arraez, Adames struck out then Lee delivered the RBI single. The Giants only had one other hit the entire game before Chapman's RBI single in the 10'th.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, 4/1 GO/AO. ERA= 4.15. McDonald threw 87 pitches in 5 innings but allowed just one run to keep the Giants in the game. He fell one inning short of a Quality Start.
6 Giants pitchers threw a scoreless inning each. Keaton Winn RHP worked the 9'th inning in a tie game and Dylan Smith got the Save in extras. It looks like Tony Vitello is settling into a patters of Caleb Kilian RHP working the 7'th inning, Erik Miller LHP the 8'th and Winn the 9'th.
The Giants try to get some sleep on the red eye flight home. They start a home stand against the Nationals tonight with Logan Webb RHP facing Miles Mikolas RHP who comes in with a 6.39 ERA. He pitched 4 shut out innings against the Giants on April 19 in Washington.
AAA: Sacramento River Cats defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 7-4.
The Giants took the lead in the top of the 9'th inning of a low-scoring game only to see it slip away due to another late bullpen failure. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 4, HR(8), BB, R, RBI. BA= .243. Devers HR was into the teeth of a wind from RF that was blowing fly balls as much as 50 ft back toward home plate. The man does have power when he can reach it.
Jung Hoo Lee RF/CF- 2 for 4, SB(1). BA= .324. If I understood Dave Fleming and Hunter Pence right, the SB came on Lee's first attempt of the season. The first SB attempt......all season! The SB did not contribute to the scoring but Lee also took third base on a single by Bryce Eldridge which led to Chapman's SF to score the go-ahead run in the ninth. Oh! And Jonah Cox stole 2B in the same inning for what will hopefully be the first of his career.
Landen Roupp RHP- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.00. Roupp was helped the the aforementioned wind blowing in but pitched well until running out of gas in the 6'th inning.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.45. Kilian leads the team in Saves with 4 but Tony Vitello went to him in the 6'th inning. Maybe Kilian's role is high-leverage guy whether that is the 6'th or 9'th inning? Otherwise it appears Vitello is willfully working to avoid defining roles as Kilian and Winn have alternated roles for awhile now. Maybe that approach works on paper but historically it has not worked in practice.
Keaton Winn RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.48. Winn entered the game in the 8'th inning with one out and nobody on. He retired the next two batters but then gave up Pete Crow-Armstrong's second HR of the game to blow the Save in the 9'th inning. The Giants failed to score in the top of the 10'th and Sam Hentges LHP gave up the game-winning hit aided by an error in RF by Victor Bericoto.
Reminder that winning 18-3 does not gain more games in the standings than are lost by losing 3-2 in extra innings. And another reminder that a bullpen down to two sometimes reliable relievers is going to cost the team games. This team cannot lose games they lead in the 9'th inning if they have any hope of getting back into playoff contention no matter how many games they win by double-digit margins.
Trevor McDonald RHP tries for a series win today facing Jameson Taillon RHP who comes in with a 5.13 ERA. And why on Earth is this a night game on a Sunday on the final game of a road trip after day games on Friday and Saturday?
