My man Ricky Oropesa had an epic night Friday in a losing cause to the UCLA Bruins: 4 for 5, 2B, HR(14). Ricky drove in 4 runs and improved his season line to .358/.430/.684.
baseballbeginnings.com has a scouting report on Minnesota RHP Seth Rosin. There hasn't been a lot of buzz about Rosin, probably because he hasn't put up the spectacular numbers that a Deck McGuire or Drew Pomeranz has. He sounds like an interesting draft possibility for rounds 3-5 though. He's a tall kid at 6'7" with a fastball that goes 91-95 MPH and an advanced changeup. Beyond his size and stuff, he's got great control. Here's his season line so far: 6-4, 4.93, 80.1 IP, 7 BB, 73 K's. He fits the mold of a typical Giants pick in rounds 3-5 with scouting reports and peripheral stats that look better than his W-L or ERA.
I think I've found another later round pitcher to keep an eye on: Tommy Shirley from Xavier! Shirley is a big junior LHP, 6'5", 220 lbs. He's their Friday night starter. Last night he turned in a gem of a game against UMass: 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. Check out the peripheral stats in his season line: 2-3, 4.63, 83.2 IP, 21 BB, 87K's. Again, the Giants have shown that they love to draft big pitchers from less well known programs in the later rounds, especially if they are lefthanded!
