Down on the Farm: 8/17/2017

AAA Sacramento River Cats trumped(excuse the expression) the Reno Aces 7-4:

Slade Heathcott CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .293.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(15).  BA= .284.
Tim Fedorowicz C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .296.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.25.

-Will Heathcott ever get a shot at CF in SF?
-Shaw is the Giants premier power-hitting prospect.  Can he play LF in the majors?  Can he hit for enough average in the majors?
-Free Fedex!

*********************************************************************************

AA  Harrisburg Senators edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4:

Caleb Gindl CF- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .302.
CJ Hinojosa 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .284.
Jerry Sands 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .282.
KC Hobson LF- 2 for 3, HR(8), BB.  BA= .248.
Cody Hall RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.86.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.28.

-What a motley crew in Richmond!

*********************************************************************************

High A  Lancaster Jethawks bombed the San Jose Giants 8-2:

Heath Quinn DH- 2 for 3, HR(9).  BA= .237.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.53.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Drew Muren RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

-Muren is a new name.  He seems to have come over from the D'Backs organization.  6'6" RHP.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Columbia Fireflies blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 5-0:

Kelvin Beltre 2B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(10).  BA= .251.
Dominic Mazza LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.01.

-This is the first season Beltre has not missed most of in his career.
-I'm sure the Giants have their reasons for not promoting Mazza, but they are not apparent to me.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Boise Hawks 14-5:

Malique Ziegler CF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(23).  BA= .272.
Bryce Johnson LF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .335.
Logan Baldwin RF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .388.
Michael Sexton DH- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .218.
Rob Calabrese C- 4 for 5.  BA= .263.
Kevin Rivera SS/2B- 3 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .255.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants outscored the Padres 10-9:

Ismael Munguia CF- 0 for 3, 3 BB.  BA= .340.
Mikey Edie LF- 5 for 6, 2B, SB(5).  BA= .455.
Rich Hill RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 BB, SB(6).  BA= .180.
Ricardo Genoves C- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .252.
Heliot Ramos PH/DH- 1 for 2. BA= .338.
Seth Corry LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.69.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.52.

-Is Mikey Edie finally finding some traction?
-Read a report about a pro scout raving about Genoves when asked who is a Giants prospect in the AZL nobody is talking about.
-A Ray Black sighting!

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants squeaked past the Padres 2-1(7 innings):

Marco Gonzalez LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.69.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Padres outlasted the Giants 3-2(10 innings):

NTSH.

Game Wrap 8/17/2017: Giants 5 Phillies 4

Jarrett Parker led an offense that built a 5-1 lead behind Jeff Samardzija and the Giants held off the team with the worse record in MLB for the Win.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence RF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .257.  After hitting just .186 in July, Pence is hitting .340 in August.

Jarrett Parker LF- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .268.  After a 1 for 14 skid to start the just completed road trip, Parker is 5 for 12 over his last 3 games.

Buster Posey C- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .319.  Hey!  The Killer P's are alive and well.  If Joe Panik was healthy, there  would be 4 of 'em.

Kelby Tomlinson 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .256.  Kelby is 6 for 15 since taking over at 2B for the injured Joe Panik.  He made a very nifty play to start a GIDP to bail Shark out of the near-disastrous 5'th inning.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.79.  Shark was excellent through 4 innings, good through 5 and barely escaped the 6'th.  See Kelby Tomlinson above.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.80.  Melancon followed a familiar script as he quickly retired the first 2 batters he faced then struggled to end the inning.

Hunter Strickland RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.30.  Dominant 8'th inning for Strick.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.44.  I doubt the Giants want to pay Melancon $60 M to be the 7'th inning guy, but for now this was an effective 7'th, 8'th, and 9'th inning combination.

*********************************************************************************

Matt Moore tries to build on his last dominant start facing Zach Eflin who I don't think the Giants have seen before.  They tend to not do well against pitchers they have not seen before.

*********************************************************************************

In case you were wondering, if the season ended today, the Giants would have the #3 pick in the 2018 draft with Cincinnati threatening to overtake them for #3.  Looking ahead, it appears likely the Giants will pick no lower than #5.  At this point, there is no clear #1 and the top tier of 2018 draft prospects is at least 5 deep so that's OK.  Why pay #1 money when you can get the same player for #5 money?

Down on the Farm: 8/16/2017

AAA  Reno Aces aced out the Sacramento River Cats 4-0:

Mac Williamson RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .235.
Jose Flores RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.96.

-Maybe Mac is finally getting some traction on the season?
-Seems like the Giants should keep Flores around and give him a long look next spring.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Harrisburg Senators outscored the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4:

Caleb Gindl CF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(7).  BA= .307.

Heath Quinn DH- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .231.
Matt Krook LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.62.
Heath Slatton RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.88.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants whitewashed the Padres 5-0:

Alexander Canario DH- 2 for 4, SB(18).  BA= .300.
Samuel Jorge 3B- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .227.
Gregory Santos RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.41.
Jose Yan RHP- 2.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.41.

-Santos is the 17 yo the Giants acquired in the Eduardo Nunez trade.

Brian Sabean and John Barr are apparently on an extended summer scouting trip to the Cape Cod League(must be rough).  Covechatter(linked to the left) uncovered an inneresting comment from Sabes via Baggs.  Check it out.

Game Wrap 8/16/2017: Marlins 8 Giants 1

The Giants played poorly in all facets of the game in a blowout loss to the Marlins.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence(.256), Jarrett Parker(.250)- 2 hits each.

Matt Cain RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.19.  That is actually a dominant pitching line.  Cainer was betrayed by his defense in the first inning as the leadoff batter reached on catcher's interference and Brandon Crawford made a key error to keep the inning alive for the Marlins.  The K and BB numbers are dominant.

Albert Suarez RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.24.  Suarez went from dominating to overwhelmed in 1 inning in his last appearance.  He did not recover today.  Suarez can look great at times but those times are way too few and far between.

Jeff Samardzija faces Aaron Nola in the opener of a 4 game series against the Phillies in AT&T Park tomorrow evening.

Down on the Farm: 8/15/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Reno Aces 7-6:

Conor Gillaspie 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(3).  BA= .242.
Mac Williamson RF- 3 for 5, 2 HR(12).  BA= .232.
Tim Fedorowicz C- 3 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .292.
Roberto Gomez RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.41.
Reyes Maronta RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.86.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(9).  ERA= 2.00.

-Mac is hitting .329 over his last 8 games with 3 dingers.  Overall a very disappointing season for Mac, but I still think he is the best bet long term for the Giants in LF.  Not to root for Jarrett Parker to fail but maybe Mac gets a look in September if Parker continues to struggle?
-I'm a bit frustrated the Giants did not get something, anything, for Nick Hundley at the trade deadline.  Fedex seems adequate as a backup MLB C, especially since the Giants aren't going anywhere this year anyway.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Harrisburg Senators defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

Caleb Gindl CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .302.

Garrett Williams LHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 12/1.  ERA= 1.42.

Joey Marciano LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Keenan Bartlett RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.47.

Game Wrap 8/15/2017: Giants 9 Marlins 4

Madison Bumgarner was not at his best but the offense piled on 6 runs over the final 3 innings to pick him up.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 3 for 4, HR(8), BB, SB(9).  BA= .272.  Span is 6 for 14 over his last 3 games but is still hitting just .244 for the month of August so far.  His 8'th HR leaves him 3 short of his career high of 11 set last year.

Hunter Pence RF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .253.  Pence is hitting .326 for the month of August so far.

Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .190.  Jones is looking more and more comfortable as a major leaguer.  He is hitting .270 in August so far.

Carlos Moncrief PH- 1 for 1.  BA= .313.  Moncrief should be playing himself into more looks.

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.99.  Bummy gave up 2 longballs.  1 was to Stanton who has 45 on the season.

*********************************************************************************

Matt Cain will try for a series win tomorrow facing Jose Urena tomorrow morning PT.

Michael Cederoth RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.13.

-Nice game for padding the ol' stat line.
-Martinez and Cederoth are two hard throwing relievers who have missed some time.  Great to see them appear in the same game and throw shutout innings.
-Giants hit 4 dingers in the game.

*********************************************************************************

Game Wrap 8/14/2017: Marlins 8 Giants 3

When the Giants took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3'rd inning, this seemed like a promising game.  Then the BABIP gods went to work evening the ledger on Ty Blach who got a lot of groundball outs but also gave up a lot of groundball basehits.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .267.  Span's ground rule double to drive in 2 runs was the big blow of the game for the Giants, which proved to be not nearly enough.

Hunter Pence and Nick Hundley had 2 hits each, all singles.

Ty Blach LHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.37.  Blach's impeccable control was not impeccable today and the BABIP gods took their revenge.  Hey!  You live by BABIP, you die by BABIP!  He's also been great at keeping the ball in the yard, but gave up dingers to Stanton and Osuna.  I should mention that Stanton's shot was his 43'rd of the season Does he have a shot at 60?

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to even the series tomorrow evening against Dan Strailly.

John Russell RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.12.

-Malique Ziegler seems to have his mojo back so we'll give him his nickname back.
-It seems only fair that if we call Stephen Woods "not Stetson" we should call Stetson "not Stephen".

Game Wrap 8/13/2017(Game 2 of DH): Nationals 6 Giants 2

The Giants and Matt Moore battled the Nationals and Max Scherzer to a 2-2 tie in regulation only to see their efforts crushed by a Howie Kendrick walkout grand slam in the 11'th inning.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .271.  Panik is hot right now.  He went 5 for 9 in the doubleheader with and added a BB.  Unfortunately he got a mitt facial from Matt Wieters while trying to score what might well have been the winning run as the trailing runner in the 4'th inning.

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .218.  Pabs is slashing .240/.240/440 in 7 games since joining the Giants on August 5.

Matt Moore LHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 5.71.  This is what the Giants were hoping to get out of Moore in at least 2/3's of his starts.  Can he put together a string of these and convince the Giants to keep him this offseason?

Albert Suarez RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.  Suarez runs hot and cold.  He struck out the side in the 10'th innings bringing back memories of an extra-inning effort by one, Yusmeiro Petit, but the roof collapsed in the 11'th as he went single, single walk, grand salami without recording an out.

The Giants move on to Miami where Ty Blach opens the series against Adam Conley in a battle of lefties.

Game Wrap 8/13/2017(Game 1 of DH): Giants 4 Nationals 2

Chris Stratton pitched a gem and the Giants offense scored their requisite 4 runs for a winning combination.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .269.  Panik is heavily BABIP dependent and his BABIP is on the rise.  Giants broadcasting team made a big point of Panik playing better on the East Coast "in front of his family."  Not sure what that means.

Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .180.  Jones has been playing a scintillating defense at 1B and he looked a whole lot more comfortable at the plate today.  His one out double started the 3 run rally in the second inning.

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(10).  BA= .261.  I would not mind a straight platoon of Gorkys and Span in CF.  That's what I wanted at the beginning of the season.

Chris Stratton RHP- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 4.91.  Wow!  If I didn't know better I might think Stratton is a former first round draft pick....oh right!  I guess he is!  Man, 2 months ago I had Stratton written off as a prospect after a string of disheartening appearances for Sacramento.  Since then he's really picked it up.  Today, he was overpowering with a FB that he could both sink and go upstairs and a plus curveball and slider, both with sharp downward bite.  Per Pavs, Stratton's curveball has the highest spin rate in the majors.  He was dominating.

Here's the thing with Chris Stratton,  He's had these kinds of games in the minors but he hasn't been able to maintain consistency.  That's his big challenge.  He's proven he's got the stuff to be an ace.  Now he needs to prove he can repeat it start after start.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(9).  ERA= 5.57.  Dyson is stlll the closer until Melancon gets his feet back on the ground. Giants are not paying Melancon $60 M to be a setup man, though, so he's sure to eventually get the 9'th inning back.

*********************************************************************************

Matt Moore tries for a series win against Max Scherzer in Game 2 of the DH.

Down on the Farm: 8/12/2017

AAA  Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 3-1:

Mac Williamson RF- 1 for 4, HR(10).  BA= .225.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 8.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 13/1.  ERA= 3.36.

-Suarez took a 4-hit gem into the 9'th inning before allowing a single and double to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with 1 out.  Tyler Rogers got a groundball out to keep the shutout alive but then gave up a 3-run dinger with the first 2 runs charged to Suarez.

Logan Webb RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/0.  ERA= 2.37.

I am bullish on Logan Webb who is just 20 yo.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants blanked the Reds 1-0:

Ismael Munguia CF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .353.
Diego Rincones RF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .292.
Seth Corry LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.47.
Weilly Yan RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.32.
Keenan Bartlett RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.52.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.72.

-Love what Heliot Ramos and Jacob Gonzalez have accomplished in their pro debuts, but don't forget about Munguia and Rincones who are also teenagers playing well at an appropriate level.
-Corry had trouble finding the strike zone in his last start, but made a nice recovery here.

Jack Conlon the pitching prospect who failed the Orioles physical apparently also failed the Giants physical and several other MLB teams too and is headed to college at Texas A&M.

Game Wrap 8/12/2017: Nationals 3 Giants 1

The Giants had to wait until 10:00 PM local time to start a series that was supposed to to start 27 hours earlier due to awful weather in Washington DC.  It had still not completely stopped raining when the grounds crew got the swamp drained enough to get started.  The Giants scored first on Joe Panik's HR, the Nationals scored 2 in the bottom of the first to take the lead, and Bryce Harper suffered a nasty looking knee injury when he slipped on a wet first base bag while trying to win a foot race with Ryder Jones to the base.  After that, this one was a real snoozer as Edwin Jackson worked his usual hex on the Giants lineup to waste QS from Jeff Samardzija.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .264.  Panik, the second batter in the lineup, got a fastball up and over the plate in the first inning.  He turned on it and drove it several rows into the RF stands for his 7'th roundtripper.  All of the Giants 8 position players in the lineup reached base and 7 had hits, but they were scattered so Panik's dinger ended up as the only run they scored.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 H.  ERA= 4.74.  Pretty much a microcosm of Shark's season here.  Hittable early to fall behind, strong K and BB numbers, poor run support and another L on the pitching line.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.15.  Giants stated plan is to ease Melancon back into the closing role.   He got a scoreless inning under his belt here.

*********************************************************************************

Weather permitting, the Giants close out the 3-game series with a day-night DH with Chris Stratton facing AJ Cole in the afternoon game with Matt Moore taking on Max Scherzer in the nightcap.

AAA  Sacramento River Cats quieted the Salt Lake City Bees:

Jose Flores RHP- 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, GO/AO= 7/1.  ERA= 3.09.

-This Flores guy seems like he might be a find.  In 8 starts since his promo to AAA, he's struck out 46 batters against 13 BB's in 46.2 IP.  He also keeps the ball on the ground.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Reading Fightin' Phils 5-4:

Caleb Gindl CF- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .301.

Jalen Miller 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .222.
Shaun Anderson RHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.08.
Carlos Diaz LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.47.

-After some bad luck in his first SJ Giants appearance, Anderson did not allow an ER in 9.2 IP in his next 2 appearances with 8 K's and 0 BB.

Tyler Schimpf RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 7.04.

-Malique Ziegler breaks out of a prolonged slump.
-5 K's in 2 IP will catch my eye in a pitching line no matter the pitcher's ERA. Schimpf has 8 K's in 4 scoreless IP over his last 2 appearances.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Brewers outscored the Giants 7-5:

Yoiber Marqina CF- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .200.
Jeffrey Parra C- 3 for 4.  BA= .381.

-Yoiber Marquina is a new name.  His milb.com bio says he was a pitcher in the Cleveland Indians organization for the past 3 seasons and actually put up pretty impressive K rates.  Now he shows up in an AZL Giants boxscore as a CF.

Game Wrap 8/8/2017: Giants 6 Cubs 3

Great pitching and 3-run home runs is a longstanding formula for baseball success.  Buster Posey supplied the 3-run dinger and Ty Blach the pitching as the Giants evened their series against the reigning WS champs.  Key Lines;

Buster Posey 1B- 2 for 4, HR(12), SB(5).  BA= .322.  Buster also busted a move on the basepaths showing off his newfound 5'th tool.  He's hitting .444 while playing 1B this year and did not sound totally opposed to the idea of playing there more in the future when talking to Amy G after the game.

Brandon Crawford SS- 2 for 4, SB(3).  BA= .231.  Crawford showed off his wheels too!

Miguel Gomez 2B- 0 for 1.  BA= .242.  Per Alex P, Gomez left the game with an undisclosed injury after not looking like he felt too good running to first.  Seems like every time a young player has seemed to be gaining traction, something like this happens this season.

Ty Blach LHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 11/3.  ERA= 4.15.  This was Blach's 13'th QS this season and 6'th in his last 7 Starts.  His ERA is 2.25 over those  7 Starts.  So, everybody wants to know if this is sustainable.  Stats people look at his K rate and say he'll certainly regress.  Well, his BABIP of .297 is right about league average.  His FIP is actually better than his ERA.  His biggest statistical outlier is the second best HR/FB in MLB among Qualified pitchers at 7.3, so his xFIP which normalizes HR/FB is much higher than his ERA.  On the other hand, Blach's highest HR/FB in the minors was 9.9, his first season in the homer happy PCL.  Otherwise his current rate is right where he has been his whole career.

Game Wrap 8/7/2017: Cubs 5 Giants 3

Two half-innings serve as a microcosm for this game, and really for the whole season.  Cubs First:  First 2 batters- easy outs.  Jason Heyward singles and Javier Baez hits a ball to the 421 ft sign that might have been an inside-the-park HR even if it didn't bounce away from Carlos Moncrief.  Giants Fourth:  Crawford leads off with a double.  Ryder Jones singles to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with no outs.  Moncrief strikes out.  Matt Moore GIDP's.  Yep, that's pretty much all you need to know about the game and the season, right there!  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .266.  After hitting .216 in July, Panik is at .316 so far in August.

Jarrett Parker LF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .289.  Parker stays hot.  He does have a long history of streakiness in the minors.

Ryder Jones 1B- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .128.  Maybe this games gives Jones some traction?

Matt Moore LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.88.  You look at the K's and BB's and that's a Dominant Start.  I just can't shake the notion that a lot of batters look like they are teeing off on Moore like they know what's coming.  3 WP's and an HBP didn't help matters.

Matt Cain RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.22.  Cain ate some innings and gave the bullpen a rest.  The 4 H make this appearance none too convincing.

Dillon Dobson 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .244.
Jalen Miller 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, SB(4).  BA= .221.
Heath Slatton RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 8.73.

-Jonah Arenado is white hot!
-A reader pointed out that 6 of the 8 runs Slatton has allowed in his last 10 games came in a 1.2 inning appearance on 6/25 and questioned why the manager would allow him to take that pounding.  IDK the answer to that, but in 8 appearances since, Slatton has allowed just 2 runs in 15 IP with 19 K's and 4 BB's so it did not seem to do him any permanent damage.

Manuel Geraldo SS- 2 for 4, SB(18).  BA= .296.
Dalton Combs RF- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .276.

John Russell RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.40.

-Very impressed by Garcia's combo of hitting for average and power.  Will need to back it up in full season ball next year.
-Russell has struck out 26 batters in 15 IP.  He's walked 7, but 3 of those came in his first appearance.

Game Wrap 8/6/2017: Giants 6 D'Backs 3

Jarrett Parker provide the spark on offense and Jeff Samardzija ground through another QS to win the rubber game of the series.  The Giants have had a few blowout wins this season followed by faceplates.  We'll see how this one works out, but it felt like something more sustainable.  Key Lines:

Buster Posey 1B- 0 for 1, 3 BB, 2 SB(4).  BA= .324.  The D'Backs clearly wanted no part of Buster Posey if they had an open base.  For his part, Buster played some amazing D at 1B and staying out of the squat seemed to result in some friskiness in the legs on the basepaths.

Hunter Pence RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .251.  Pence picked up his good friend Buster Posey after another intentional walk loaded the bases in the 3'rd inning.  Pence reached for a changeup and yanked it down the LF line to drive in 2.  Pence might have had a chance for 2, but almost fell down getting out of the batters box and had to beat a retreat after a hard turn around 1B.

Miguel Gomez 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .258.  Gomez singled in the second inning and came home on Parker's double.  Kid can hit.  If he can play decent defense at 2B, watch out.  Joe Panik might be hearing footsteps coming up from behind.  Giants clearly like what they've seen from Gomez and Panik just as clearly has at least 1 foot in the doghouse.

Jarrett Parker LF- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .265.  What a shot in the arm Parker has been for the Giants since his callup!  In addition to the dinger, he unleashed an amazing throw from deep LF to nail, and I mean nail, JD Martinez attempting to score on a sac fly.  D'Backs didn't even bother to ask for a review.  In 3 games since his callup, Parker is 6 for 13 with 3 doubles and a dinger plus 2 OF assists.  That had Amy G wondering aloud after the game what might have been had Jarrett not suffered that somewhat freak injury that robbed him of the better part of the first 4 months of the season, and that is an interesting question.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .109.  Shark hit one a ton in the 3'rd inning and he thought is was gone for sure.  Bat flip, HR trot, the Works.  He had to kick it up a notch to get to 2B when the ball bounced off the CF wall.  He then had to watch his teammates in the dugout point at Ty Blach's flexed bicep.  What a hoot!

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.15.  Not a really outstanding performance but he ground it out for another QS and gave his team a chance to win.

Albert Suarez RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 3.72.  A couple of games ago I said Suarez is not a closer.  I might have to take that back.  His stuff was so good in this one, Boch let him finish it despite the Save situation in the 9'th.  Suarez' curveball was a thing of beauty and he kept breaking of one great yakker after another that just froze the D'Backs batters.

DSL  Giants vs Mariners Suspended after 6.5 innings with the score tied at 5-5.

Game Wrap 8/5/2017: Giants 5 D'Backs 4

The Giants showed some fight on 1997 team reunion night overcoming a 4-0 D'Backs lead in regulation play and pushing across the winning run in the bottom of the 10'th inning.  Key Lines:

Kelby Tomlinson PH/3B- 1 for 1, BB,  BA= .268.  Kelby started the game-tying rally in the 8'th inning with yet another PH single.  He took 3'rd on Crawford's single and scored on a Buster Posey GIDP.  He also drew an intentional walk in the 10'th and was erased on Brandon Crawford's GIDP, but that play sent Denard Span to 3B to set up Jarrett Parker's game-winning hit.

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .216.  Pablo's return was a mixed bag.  His throwing error allowed the D'Backs 3'rd run to score in the 5'th, but his double into the left-center gap started the 3-run rally in the 7'th that got the Giants back into this game.  Bruce Bochy sent Buster Posey to PH rather than let Pabs hit from the right side in the 8'th inning.  Hey!  Pabs may be hitting .216, but he's hitting .333 with a .667 SLG% as a Giant, and the BoSox are paying 97.5% of his salary!

Jarrett Parker LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .267.  Parker followed Sandoval's double in the 7'th inning with one of his own which he drilled off the RF wall.  His 2-out groundball in the 10'th found a seam.  It was fielded in shallow R-CF by the 2B too deep to have a chance as Span scored on the IF single.  Parker added a diving, sliding catch down the LF line that had a lot of people remembering his encounter with the LF wall that broke his clavicle back in April.  Parker showed no fear and made the highlight reel catch.

Nick Hundley C- 3 for 4.  BA= .272.  Hundley had 3 hits but did not figure into the scoring.

Chris Stratton RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.63.  Things did not look good when Stratton started the game by allowing a leadoff double followed by a walk, HBP, double.  He was saved by a relay throw from Parker to Crawford to the plate to nab the trailing runner on JD Martinez' double.  He then struck out Descalso to limit the damage.  After that, Stratton settled down to pitch 3 shutout innings.   He also did a nice job of limiting the damage from Pablo's throwing error by striking out Paul Goldschmidt and getting Descalso on a harmless flyball to strand 3 runners in the 5'th.

Kyle Crick RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.60.  Crick pitched his way out of 2 jams.  After 2 singles, a Crawford throwing error and a Passed Ball put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with 1 out and a run in, He struck out AJ Pollack and got Jake Lamb to pop out to end the D'Backs 6'th inning.  Lamb in particular has absolutely killed Giants RHP's over the years.  Then in the 7'th after both Denard Span and Hunter Pence lost JD Martinez' high fly for triple, Cricky got Descalso to pop out and Ketel Marte to fly out.  Oh, and he struck out Paul Goldschmidt to start the inning.

Game Wrap 8/4/2017: D'Backs 2 Giants 1

The Giants followed up another big win with another....faceplant.  This time they got a solid start from Madison Bumgarner but the offense managed just 3 infield hits in a game that was not as close as the score.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .273.  So much for Jarrett Parker playing somewhere every day.  I get that the Giants lineup is very left heavy with Parker playing LF and Jones at 3B, but Span hits LH too, looks like he needs a breather and the Giants have said they want to get Parker some time in CF.  I just don't get it.

Brandon Belt 1B- 0 for 2, HBP.  BA= .241.  The day after equalling his career high in HR's, Belt takes a curveball off the helmet and did not look good as he was helped off the field.  It is hard to imagine he is not going to miss some time on the concussion DL/protocol. Early speculation is that Ryder Jones will play a lot of 1B with perhaps Jae-Gyun Hwang coming back to play 3B or maybe Miguel Gomez gets an extended look there, or maybe at 1B with Jones playing 3B?  Can they re-sign Conor Gillaspie?  Just kidding!

Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.88.  Bumgarner seems to have inherited Matt Cain's penchant for not getting run support.  Per Kruk and Kuip, he 's gotten less than 2 runs of support in 5 of his 9 starts this season.

AAA  Omaha Stormchasers beat the Sacramento Rivercats 7-1:

Slade Heathcott RF- 2 for 3.  BA= .667.
Dusten Knight RHP- 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.24.
DJ Snelton LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.00.

-Knight has quietly worked his way to the doorstep of MLB and is working multiple innings at a time in a very tough PCL.
-Heathcott gets closer to another shot at MLB.

Hunter Cole RF- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .245.

Gio Brusa DH- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .236.
Matt Krook LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.95.
Heath Slatton RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.19.

-Maybe if Krook pitches out of the bullpen he has less time to think about what he's going to do on the mound and maybe that's a good thing.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Columbia Fireflies 7-2:

Sandro Fabian RF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .251.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.63.

Game Wrap 8/3/2017: Giants 11 A's 2

The Giants youth movement paid immediate dividends as Ryder Jones started a 4-run rally in the first inning with a basehit and Jarrett Parker capped it with a 2-run double.  The route was on.  Key Lines:

Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 5.  BA= .115.  Jones added an RBI single in his second AB and scored a second run.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(18).  BA= .242.  Belt hit his 18'th dinger of the season to equal his career high.

Jarrett Parker LF- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .240.  Parker likes to hit Oakland pitching and he made the most of his comeback game from a very unfortunate injury, a fractured clavicle, suffered early in the season when he crashed into the LF wall.

Ty Blach LHP- 1 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .176.  Blach has had his moments at the plate and he muscled up and hit one out to straightaway CF for a 3-run dinger to cap the Giants scoring.

Ty Blach LHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.24.  Blach just pounded the strike zone and with a big early lead, that's exactly what a pitcher should do.   Out of 104 pitches over 70 were 2-seam fastballs courtesy of Giants Postgame Live.

*********************************************************************************

The D'backs slither in for a 3-game weekend series with Madison Bumgarner facing rookie Anthony Banda tomorrow evening.

Down on the Farm: 8/2/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats were idle.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels held off the Portland Sea Dogs 7-5:

KC Hobson 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .248.
Hunter Cole RF- 1 for 3, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .239.
Caleb Gindl CF- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .255.
Brandon Bender 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .278.
Carlos Alvarado RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K.  ERA= 2.53.
Cody Hall RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.30.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(14).  ERA= 2.52.

-I generally defend the Giants farm system as underrated, but I can't defend the current Richmond roster which might have 1 or 2 legitimate prospects.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants blanked the Visalia Rawhide 3-0:

Bryan Reynolds RF- 2 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .316.
Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Garrett Williams LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Dylan Rheault RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(17).  ERA= 2.55.

-Good to see Melancon rehabbing, but the big news here is Garrett Williams' dominating performance which has to give him serious helium in prospect rankings.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 5-0:

Melvin Adon RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.71.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were idle for the NWL All-Star break.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants outlasted the Dodgers 4-3 in 10 innings:

Ismael Munguia LF/CF- 3 for 3, HR(1), 2 BB.  BA= .339.
Ricardo Genoves C- 2 for 4.  BA= .259.
Nathanael Javier 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .259.
Jose Rivero SS- 2 for 2, BB.  BA= .333.
Heliot Ramos PH- 1 for 1.  BA= .380.
Seth Corry LHP- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.35.
Frank Rubio RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

-With all the excitement around the Giants top 3 draft picks, it's easy for overlook several very promising international prospects.  Ismael Munguia, for one, seems like a dynamic player.
-4 perfect innings from Seth Corry who looks terrific so far.

*********************************************************************************

DSL Giants whitewashed the Orioles 2-0:

Marco Gonzalez LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.87.
Lylon Lopez RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.38.
Orleny Quiroz LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(6).  ERA= 3.20.

-Gonzalez is an interesting pitcher.  He's 19 yo but appeared in just 14 DSL innings last year and has really come on strong as a SP this season.

Game Wrap 8/2/2017: A's 6 Giants 1

As they have done several other times this season, the Giants followed up a resounding victory with.....a faceplant!  Matt Moore struggled when he had to pitch from the stretch and the offense managed just 3 hits in the first 7 innings against a rookie pitcher who came into the game with a 5+ ERA, and how many times have I written something like this?  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- 1 for 4.  BA= .276.  After batting .374 in June, Span finished July with a .224 BA and has struggled in the field.  He took some heat after this game for a couple of missed catches, although in both cases, the balls had a lot of carry and bounced off the wall.  Those are tough catches, but I suppose a really good CF might have caught both.

Brandon Crawford SS- 1 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .229.  Crawford drew a walk to lead of the 5'th followed by a double by Hunter Pence to put runners at 2'nd and 3'rd with no outs.  Conor Gillespie flied out weakly to CF.  Gorkys lined out to RF deep enough to score Crawford on a SF.  Miguel Gomez then hit a long drive to left-CF that had some carry but A's LF Chad Pinder tracked it down after taking a circuitous route to end the rally with just 1 run scored.

Matt Moore LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.80.  Moore looked OK as long as he was in the windup but as soon as a runner got on base and he had to pitch from the stretch, everything fell apart.  On the other hand, the biggest difference between Moore's start and Sharks the night before was the level of run support.

*********************************************************************************

The 4 game Bay Bridge interleague home and home series concludes tonight with Ty Blach facing Kendall Graveman.

*********************************************************************************

After the game, the Giants designated Conor Gillespie for assignment and optioned Jae-Gyun Hwang back to Sacramento.  They called up Jarrett Parker and Ryder Jones.  Parker and Jones will presumably play LF and 3B everyday, at least for the time being. Expect to see less of Denard Span and more of Gorkys Hernandez in CF.

Down on the Farm: 8/1/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats shut out the New Orleans Baby Cakes 6-0:

Pablo Sandoval 3B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4, HR(11).  BA= .284.
Tim Federowicz C- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .286.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.64.

-Baby Cakes?
-This was Suarez' 3'rd QS in a row.  He has allowed 3 R with 19 K's and 7 BB's in 20 IP over that span.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Portlands Sea Dogs edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

CJ Hinojosa SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .242.
Tyler Herb RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.64.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.85.
Seth Rosin RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.86.

-Coonrod comes out of the bullpen and it does not go well.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants blanked the Visalia Rawhide 2-0:

Steven Duggar RF- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .245.
Grant Watson LHP- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.02.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.60.
Carlos Diaz LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 2.53.

-This was Watson's 5'th QS in a row.  He has allowed just 5 R in 31 IP in that span.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 5-1:

NTSH.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  The NWL had their All-Star game.  The Volcanoes had several participants.  Nothing outstanding to report.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Padres squeaked past the Giants 1-0:

Sidney Duprey LHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.10.
Greg Jacknewitz LHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.48.
John Gavin LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants pounded the Padres 10-4:

Alexander Canario RF- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .302.
Franklin Labour 1B/LF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .305.
Samuel Jorge 3B- 3 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .227.
Gregory Santos RHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 1.06.

-Santos makes his Giants organizational debut after being acquired from the Red Sox in the Nunez trade.

Game Wrap 8/1/2017: Giants 10 A's 4

The Giants offense came to life in support of Jeff Samardzija for a runaway win in Oakland.  Key Lines:

Gorkys Hernandez CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .260.  Here are Gorkys' BABIP's by month:  .211, .250, .452, .393.

Kelby Tomlinson LF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .261.  Kelby gets a start in LF which is good for his versatility.  Unfortunately, he does not give the type of power the Giants need at the position long term.

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(17).  BA= .242.  Belt is within 1 HR of his career high.

Buster Posey C- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .333.  Kruk and Kuip mentioned that Buster could win another batting title.  He currently holds the #3 BA in MLB, but seems unlikely to pass Justin Turner at .355 and Jose Altuve at .365.

Hunter Pence RF- 1 for 3, HR(8).  BA= .243.  A lot of the Giants problems would be solved with a strong final 2 months from Pence and then a fully healthy season next year, the final year of his contract.

Nick Hundley C- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(5).  BA- .262.  Disappointing that Hundley was not traded before the non-waiver deadline.  Could he still be a waiver deal candidate?

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.77.  Not his strongest start, but hey, look what a little run support will do for you!

*********************************************************************************

The home and home 4 game series now moves to AT&T Park with Matt Moore facing Daniel Gossett in the first game there.

Down on the Farm: 7/31/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats blanked the New Orleans Baby Cakes 3-0:

Mac Williamson LF- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .229.
Pablo Sandoval 3B- 0 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .238.
Jose Flores RHP- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.28.
Reyes Maronta RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Derek Law RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(6).  ERA= 3.86.

-Really disappointing that Mac has not gained traction after his early season injury.  I really thought he could be the answer in LF.  Maybe he still can be, but I would say Austin Slater, Ryder Jones and Chris Shaw have moved ahead of him on the depth chart.
-Has anyone seen any reason to think Pablo has anything left in his tank?
-It seems like Flores, Maronta and Law could all help in the Giants bullpen right now.
-Saw on Covechatter that Slade Heathcott got promoted to Sacramento.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants defeated the Visalia Rawhide 4-2:

Steven Duggar RF- l for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .255.
"Not That" Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .324.
Johnny Cueto RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Matt Solter RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.03.

Great looking rehab line for Cueto except he was supposed to go 4 innings and came out with "forearm tightness" which often a code term for possible UCL tear.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3:

Jose "Viz Jr" Vizcaino Jr.  1B- 2 for 4, SB(9).  BA= .249.
Jacob Heyward LF- 3 for 4.  BA= .220.
Michael Bernal 3B- 2 for 3.  BA= .259.
Raffi "RViz" Vizcaino RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.73.

*********************************************************************************

SS  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were idle.

I think the NWL is on their All-Star break.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants edged out the Angels 4-3:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .391.
Francisco Medina SS/3B- 2 for 2, 2B, Sac.  BA= .234.
Kyle McPherson 2B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .200.
Camilo Doval RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.52.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Olbis Parra RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(5).  ERA= 2.38.

Game Wrap 7/31/2017: A's 8 Giants 5

The Giants got about all they can expect from Matt Cain these days and he left the game with a 3-2 lead after 5 innings.  That was not enough for an exhausted bullpen coming off a tough series in LA.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .240.  Belt ended July with a .396 OBP and a .449 SLG% for the month.

Buster Posey DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .328.  Buster's season keeps chugging along.  Unfortunately, he struck out with runners at first and third to end a 7'th inning rally when the score was 6-5.

Carlos Moncrief RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.  The 28 yo Moncrief got his first major league hits a day after flipping his bat after drawing a walk in his first MLB PA.  He also is reputed to have a major cannon for an arm in the OF.

Jae-Gyun Hwang 3B- 1 for 3.  BA= .163.  Per Kruk and Kuip, when Bochy was asked why he let Hwang face Kenley Jansen when the LH hitting Joe Panik was available, he answer was that he thinks Hwang "has a nose for RBI's."  LOL Boch!  It's either time for him to retire or he ran out of &$%#'s to give a few games ago.

Matt Cain- 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.37.  Cainer left the game with a 3-2 lead having thrown 92 pitches.  The bullpen brought their gas cans and the lead was gone by the middle of the 6'th inning.  It might be time for some injuries to crop up in the bullpen to get these guys a breather with a full 1/3 of the season left to play.

*********************************************************************************

Jeff Samardzija faces lefty Sean Manaea in game 2 of the Oakland leg of the series.

*********************************************************************************

As if the Giants needed more bad news, Johnny Cueto exited his rehab start in San Jose with the dreaded forearm tightness.  Stay tuned on THAT one!
