Gotta hand it to Velez. He doesn't sit around moping when he gets sent down. Buster looks like he's starting to dial in his power stroke. Santiago Casilla is likely to play a major role in the bullpen before the season is over if he stays healthy.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Bowie Baysox 5-4:

Slim pickings on offense, I looked for lines where the player reached base more than once. It looks like the Giants may be trying to stretch out Craig Whitaker.
High A High Desert Mavericks outlasted the San Jose Giants in 10 innings 2-1:

Jose Flores- 2 for 3. BA= .500.
Eric Surkamp- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.57.
Edwin Quirarte- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.93.
Flores is a newcomer in only his second game with SJ. Peguero is hitting .350 over his last 10 games. Nice start by Surkamp.
Low A Augusta Greenjackets shaded the Hagerstown Suns 3-2:
Evan Crawford- 2 for 4, BA= .237.
Tommy Joseph- 3 for 4. BA= .271.
Ryan Lollis- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .310.
Brian Salsbury- 8 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K's. ERA= 4.19.
Nice to see Joseph hitting some non-HR hits. Brian Salbury has been inconsistent, but was dominant today.

ReplyDeleteOnce again, thanks for the reports...Good outing for Surkamp..and he has been very good all year...Top 5 in the CAL in ERA and WHIP and looks to have some strikeout stuff..
As for Posey, saw no need for him as late as a few weeks ago but now that he is showing the power it makes it a little bit more interesting...Still don't think we NEED hin, but if his defense and throwing are fine, not much more he ccan learn in Fresno...Wish the kid could play LF!

Good point on Whitaker. At this point, he seems like an organizational guy, though at 25 he's still within the parameters of a prospect in terms of age. It's just that we drafted him out of high school and he hasn't really done anything since to justify his high draft status. I don't recall, but it appears that he might have had an injury in 2006, looking at his career stats, so that could have delayed him (hasn't stopped Waldis much though).
ReplyDeleteSo, he's been a reliever for 3 years prior but now appears to be stretching out to be a starter again. If he was injured in 2006 and had an operation like TJS, the Giants seem to wait a couple of years before deciding to try him as a starter again.
I've also seen the Giants do this before because they want to give the pitcher more innings. Do you think that this is the case here or do you think they really want to make him a starter again?
His walk rate, while high, is actually low for his career and he boosted his strikeout rate, so his K/BB ratio is actually good this year. It had been pretty bad for his whole career, mostly due to bad walk rates, but he wasn't really striking out a ton of guys either, at least not since 2004, a generation ago in prospect-time, but he's k-ing nearly 11 K/9 right now. So he has definitely made some changes and improvements this season.
