Game Wrap 05-25-2010: Giants 4 Nats 2

Todd Wellemeyer took a 1 hit shutout into the 7'th inning and started a 4 run, 2 out rally in the 5'th to spur the Giants to a win over the Nats and Giants fans old whipping boy, Livan "Cheeseburger" Hernandez before a relatively sparse crowd at AT&T park last night. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 3 for 4, 2B. Torres started the game off with a resounding double off the left CF wall, but in typical Giants fashion was left stranded at 3B.

Edgar Renteria- 2 for 3, S. Renteria failed to advance Torres in the first inning when he bounced back to Hernandez. He did keep the winning rally going with the 3'rd of 5 consecutive hits in the inning. He also made a sparkling defensive play to end a Nats threat earlier in the game. Unfortunately, he tweaked his hammy again and you have to start thinking he's going to lose most of the season to this recurring problem and likely won't be back next year.

Todd Wellemeyer- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. Strange to think Wellemeyer was the stopper tonight, but he has pitched quite well at home. When he loses it, he loses it fast, though as he started the 7'th by allowing 3 consecutive hits that were not bloopers.

Bullpen(Romo, Mota, Wilson)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K's. The bullpen finished this one off with aplomb.

I really liked the lineup Bochy put out there today, although the runs they scored were a bit fluky. It was only for one game though as Rent likely goes back to the DL. I particularly thought it took some guts to put Molina and Rowand down in the 7 and 8 holes. The move didn't improve the performance of either player.

The Giants have a great chance to put another W on the board with Timmy on the mound vs Atilano tonight.

The Giants gained a game of .500 at 23-21, 3.5 games behind the 27-18 Padres who won yet another 1-0 game against the St Louis Cardinals behind Jon Garland. Man, those Pads pitchers are sure comfortable in Petco Park, huh? The Dodgers slipped to 25-20, 2 games off the pace with a 3-0 loss to Ryan Dempster and the Cubs. Colorado(23-22) stayed 0.5 games behind the Giants with a 3-2 win over the last place D'Backs(20-26).

  1. It was good to see Molina and Rowand in the lineup spots they should be, finally.

Again, I'll say that the DL has been the Giants' best friend the last several years, since it forces Bochy to play some of the younger guys. With Renteria out, let's hope Bowker gets some regular AB's. This, assuming DeRosa does the smart thing and has the surgery immediately rather than waiting.

    I'd imagine:

    RF - Torres
    2B - Sanchez
    1B - Huff
    3B - Sandoval
    SS - Uribe
    LF - Bowker
    C - Molina
    CF - Rowand
