Madison Bumgarner allowed just 3 hits but 2 of those were solo dingers. The Giants defense added an unearned run for the Braves and it was enough for Bumgarner to take the loss. Key Lines:
Melky Cabrera- 2 for 3, 3B. BA= .357. Melky's Hit Parade continues as he racked up his 4'th 2-hit game in a row.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 3. BA= .244. Belt was pulled for PH Justin Christian who is hitting .179 with the lefty on the mound. Not gonna defend THAT one. Belt has actually hit lefties quite well.
Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 10/2, 2 HR. ERA= 3.12. That's a sweet looking line except for the dingers.
The Dodgers are idle today, so the Giants lead in the NL West slipped to 2.5 games over the Hated Ones. D'Backs lost to the Reds 7-6 to stay 7 back. Trevor Bauer got sent back to the minors.
The Giants move on to Philadelphia where they should have more fun with the fans. Tim Lincecum starts game 1 of the series tomorrow night facing Vance Worley.

Tough game to win and it showed. Early start after a extra innings night game. Braves are very tough to sweep in Turner Field and they were up for it emotionally + Hudson on the mound. Hoped MadBum could pitch his way to victory and he nearly did. Nice to see the Giants take 2 of 3 in Atlanta.

Hard to trade for help at the positions open. Kelly Johnson at 2B? Encarnacion is playing 1B a bit apparently. Jays are committed to 27MM plus a 2MM buyout in 2016. He's hitting, I imagine he'd be quite expensive. Or... dare I say it... defensively challenged Mark Reynolds? If they don't like Belt's strikeouts I don't see them digging that, but hey, RH power!
One problem is we don't have a lot of win now pieces to give up. Hate to say it, Belt is our best trade piece, followed by Brown/Wheeler...
Yeah, it was Manual. Why do we need 2B? Theriot has been good OBP since return DL, from what I remember, was he in slump recently?
DeleteUnless Sabean gets stupid ofer for Belt, he is our 1B. I think reliever is goal, bat only if interesting deal. I agree with Bacci -shock and horror - we need bullpen help.
With value of letting go of free agents going down, that devalues players available in trade, and should lead to more trades and less need to give up as good prospects, I think.
Simply stated, the Giants just don't hit enough jacks. Sure, they may win the NL West, however, if and when they reach post season, they will suffer a similar fate to today's frustrating loss wherein they out hit the Braves 9-3 but lost because 7 of those hits were singles, just 1 double, 1 triple and surprise, 0 dingers. They had their week's quota in last night's extra inning tilt. McCutchen has 22 dingers, twice the jacks of Buster. Hell, even Cody Ross has had 3 homers of the 3 run variety in his last 2 games. Unless the G's acquire a consistent long ball slugger, they will be obliterated by elite teams like the Nats and others who have better era pitching and far more long ball power.
ReplyDeleteSeems like I remember hearing about the Giants being no match for certain teams in the postseason, oh, like maybe about 2 years ago. Believe me, those teams everybody thinks are so great right now? They DO NOT want to face the Giants in the postseason!

DeleteThe so-called elite Nats have a record, so far, three games ahead of the Giants, and over the season, with their "far more long ball power," they have scored six more runs (375 to 369). I don't get any sense of obliterating superiority from these numbers. The Giants' pitchers need to do better on the road; and, as Shankbone says, the team needs to be less sloppy in the field. As to the long ball, the Giants seem well-constructed to play at home, where they have the league's second-best record, and in some other spacious NL West parks.
DeleteIts not really sour grapes, but I have been watching Cody Ross do his thing this year, smiling a bit (happy as hell for Ross) and grimacing a bit as well... We just need a player to strap on his Cody Ross shoes. I think Pagan (struggling mightily and apparently injured according to Baggs recent chat) could be that type of guy.
DeleteCody has benefitted a lot from the Green Monster, but yeah, he could give you a dinger at very opportune times. He very much ran hot and cold. When he's hot, he's a lot of fun to watch.
DeleteJust saw Trevor Bauer was sent back down to the minors by AZ. Clearly he was the next Timmy. Just not the good Timmy, ERA 6+. Maybe he needs to pick another pitcher to emulate.
ReplyDeleteToo early to write off Bauer. He was rushed up pretty fast. Don't forget Timmy had some rough patches the year he was called up. Arizona is a much tougher place to pitch than SF too.
