Game Wrap 7/23/2012: Giants 7 Padres 1

The Giants got 9 hits from their 2,3 and 4 hitters and a strong start from Ryan Vogelsong and cruised to an easy 7-1 win over the Pesky Padres(they are always Pesky when they play the Giants).  Key Lines:

Ryan Theriot- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(11).  BA= .279.  Theriot hitting .295 over his last 10 has been very steady this year.  Also playing solid D at 2B.  Who needs Freddy Sanchez?

Melky Cabrera- 3 for 4.  BA= .360.  Buster Posey is unconcious right now.  Melky has been unconscious all year! He has a 10 game hit streak with 6 of the 10 multi-hit games.  He's hitting .406 in July which is not as good as the .429 he put up in May. He has hit .300 or better every month so far.

Buster Posey- 3 for 4, HR(13).  BA= .317.  Speaking of unconscious!  Short of Barry Bonds, I'm not sure I've seen a hotter hitter than Buster Posey right now.  Buster has 5 games with 3 or more hits out of his last 10.  Included in that 10 game span is 3 HR's and  a .513 BA. He's hitting .403 for the month of July.  Tonight he drove in 4 of the Giants 7 runs and put the game away in the 5'th with a rare opposite field HR to the top of the RF arcade.  His 60 RBI's have him tied for 9'th in the NL and he has driven in 17 in his last 10 games.  So, you want Ribeyes?  You got Ribeyes!

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 4.  BA= .239.  Crawford had a strange game. He drove in the 4'th run of the first inning on a liner to LF that was originally called an out as Kotsay appeared to catch the ball just at the grasstops.  The Umps then huddled and ended up calling it a hit and an RBI.
Replays clearly showed the ball was trapped.  Later, Crawford stroked a double to the right-center gap but was called out by the first base ump on an appeal play on the grounds he missed 1B as he was rounding it. Replays on the SD TV broadcast appeared to show him touching the bag with his left heel as he rounded it on the inside.  Crawford was thrown out at first in the bottom of the 8'th for the final out of the inning.  He took a wide turn toward the field and appeared to say something to the ump as he passed him and headed out to SS.  The Ump gave him the old heave-ho.  I say, way to stand up for yourself, Brandon!  Sometimes you just have to get it off your chest!

Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.26.  This was just another day at the office for Vogey.

The Dodgers topped the Cards 5-3 to remain 1.5 games back of the NL West leading Giants while the D'backs beat Jonathan Sanchez and the Rockies 6-3 to remain 6 games behind the leaders.

Madison Bumgarner pitches tomorrow evening against Edinson Volquez.

  1. The Giants are becoming a very productive and dominating team at home - way to go!

Nice to see the pitching/speed/gap-to-gap hitting roster construction to the park's strengths paying off.

  2. didnt get to see most of the game. was on virgin america from sf to la...csn wasnt carrying it....and ya, i know that im stupid for not getting a tik to the game and staying longer...but i thought monday was an off day...did notice a lot of people wearing giants garb thoughout the city...such a diff from when i was a kid, and only people going to games wore stuff...we are talking jerseys, not just t's...and girls too....soooo cool....giants own sf

i think the first base ump is a replacement ump, and its nice to see that the umps at all levels suck equally....there is a serious problem that the mlb needs to address...craw was too nice...he needed to really rip into him

unconscious? thats vogey...frickin machine....is there anyone in the league who has earned a contract the way he has? and he may be underpaid

how insane was the ichiro trade?

    1. Vogey turned 35 on Sunday. Man, Father Time can be a real SOB! Too bad it took so long for it to all come together for him. Better late than never though, huh? On the plus side, he doesn't have 2000+ innings on the arm so he may be in line for at least 1 more payday. I'm sure Vogey would tell you that the struggle makes him appreciate the success all the more. I know that's the way I feel about him.

Oh, and we haven't seen many articles on Fangraphs about how he's going to regress lately, have we?

    2. I think Voggie has learned how to pitch - both harnessing his control and command and between the ears. And no doubting his competitive fire. That is a good sign for pitching effectively into his late thirties, even if his stuff declines.

  3. Wait, is being unconscious a good thing? :) You might have to explain that one to me.

    1. IDK, I picked up the term as a kid from my friends who were basketball fans. If somebody got hot and started raining jump shots they'd say "He's unconscious!" Sort of the same idea as "see it, hit it" or "grip it and rip it.' They aren't thinking about it up there, their just hitting it like they've moved into another dimension and the ball looks bigger and slower than reality to them.

  4. Fun game.

It's hiding when Theriot, Melky and BUSTER are hot, but I still think we need a stick to do this. 1st or 3rd. While Belt ain't dead, I don't think his success timeline coincides with the playoffs this year.

Nothing wrong with the Ichiro going to NY. Mariners cut ties with the past. (Some were saying Ichiro might resign with the M's for 2013. Why????) Ichiro gets to be what he is: One of the best 4th OFs in the game. Shot at the ring. Mariners get a couple of pieces. Good trade.

    1. Oh, and someone let the Rockies know they gotta fix Dirty before throwing him out there. So the D'Backs get a freebee. Save one for the Giants.

    2. Agree it would be nice to get a bat at the deadline.

Yeah, Ichiro ain't what he used to be and he's expensive. Let the Yanks pay him as he slides into retirement. He's not going to be helping the Mariners when they are good again.

  5. Posey and the month of July - they go well together.
