Game Wrap 7/13/2012: Giants 5 Astros 1

Madison Bumgarner dominated the Astros while the Giants offense got him some early runs for an easy win.  Key Lines:

Ryan Theriot- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .277.  Maybe Riot should be leading off?  His OBP is .353 in June and July so far.

Buster Posey- 1 for 4, HR(11).  BA= .289.  Buster's bomb was a mammoth shot to dead CF in the first inning with  Theriot on base.

Angel Pagan- 2 for 3, SF, SB(16).  BA= .287.  Pagan gets off to a good second half start.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .255.  Nice little game for Belt.

Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.15.  Bumbgarner was in complete command with Snyders solo HR in the 7'th with the Giants leading 4-0 the only damaging blow.

Sergio Romo- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.69.  Romo retired the first 3 batters he faced, but put two runners on base in the 9'th creating a Save situation for Santiago Casilla.

Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(22).  ERA= 2.78.  Casilla needed this as he used his fastball to set up the curveball this time with excellent results.

The Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw topped the Pathetic Padres 2-1 to keep their 0.5 game lead on the Giants in the NL West.  The D'Backs got blown out by the Cubs 8-1 to fall 5 games back.

Tim Lincecum faces a crucial test tomorrow against Lucas Harrell in an evening game.

  1. What a shot by Buster!

Was hoping to come over here and solve the debate of whether to use Romo in the 8th or to close in the 9th by pointing out that he just needs to pitch both. That didn't quite work out!

    From High Heat Stats:

Best quality start percentage in the Majors:
    Ryan Voglesong: 15/16

    Worst Quality Start Percentage:
    Tim Lincecum 4/18

Pretty amazing. Come back to us Tim!

BTW, if you ever get over to to High Heat Stats, there is a writer there by the name of John Autin who does game recaps (not everyday, maybe 1/2 the days) that are pretty damn good.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. One thing I've learned from this blog is people like consistency, things they can count on every day.

    2. Doc, High Heat is more stat-geek type stuff. But with the twist of compelling writing giving relevancy to current stats. I like their writing a lot more than Fangraphs.

These are actually the guys that used to write the blog (when there was one) on Baseball-Reference.

    1. Yeah, I thought Pablo veered just a hair inside the baseline to body check Snyder. Brought back bad memories of when our team was on the receiving end of that. I thought Snyder might have made the play if he had just made a swipe tag instead of half blocking the plate.

It was nice to have the insurance run but I don't like home plate collisions and the run wasn't crucial.

As for the legal issue, the accusation sounded pretty weak from the beginning, but Pablo needs to regard it as a wake up call and realize how much he could be throwing away with risky behavior.

  3. Give Panda some credit on the collision at home, he could have easily mauled Snyder but instead gave him an upright body check instead of the lowering of the shoulder and blowing him up like Cousins did causing Posey's injury. Maybe others don't see a difference but that was about as clean a hit as I have seen at homeplate and it did the job. Christian isn't a long term platoon option for Blanco so I hope either Blanco gets hot again or maybe Theriot steps in against lefties but one thing is for sure, the leadoff and number 2 spots in the lineup are critical to this lineups success. I really want another middle of the lineup bat with 30 HR potential but if Sabes is able to get a quality number 1 or 2 hitter that may be enough to carry us into the playoffs and beyond.

    1. I agree, Pablo could've hit him a lot harder.

Blanco should be in the leadoff spot tonight. Let's see how he does after a break. He needs to get back to taking walks and running bunts, whatever he needs to do to get on. Lately it seems like he is popping up way too much.
