Game Wrap 7/30/2012: Mets 8 Giants 7

Well, there are disheartening losses and there are losses like this that just reach in and rip it right out of your chest.  Sergio Romo gave up a 4-2 lead in the 8'th inning.  The remainder of the game was a see-saw bullpen battle that the Giants lost on, you guessed it, Scott Hairston's second home run of the game in the 10'th inning.  Who else?  Key Lines:

Scutaro(.274), Theriot(.271), Cabrera(.352), Posey(.316), Belt(.239) had 2 hits each with 2 doubles by Buster and 1 by Scoots.  On the other hand, Scutaro struck out looking in the bottom of the 9'th with the bases loaded to end a chance for the Giants to win it in a walk-off.

Nate Schierholtz- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .257.  Nate also made a nice play on a ball hit off the RF wall to hold Jason Bay to a single.  Don't know if Nate is on the trading block or not, but he's certainly increased his value the last few games.

Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.09.  Solid start for Bumgarner who has 26 K's in his last 3 starts over 20 IP.

Brad Penny- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.02.  Penny looked sharp in his inning. Bochy played it by the book, but Penny is the least worked of the Giants relievers right now, he's the one who is most capable of going multiple innings.  I'm a big believer in letting a reliever go another inning if he pitches a clean inning.  I really wanted Penny to at least start the 8'th inning.

Sergio Romo- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.30.  I know Romo hasn't pitched a lot of innings but he's pitched and warmed up often.  It looks to me like he's lost a lot of weight.  He may be starting to feel the fatigue of the long season.

Santiago Casilla- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.49.  Looks like Casilla is out of gas.  Sabes has to get a closer today, or it's very hard to see the Giants not fading fast in the dog days of August.  I don't know if Broxton is the answer or not, but if he's available, I think Sabes has to take his shot.

The Dodgers lost to the D'Backs 7-2 to remain in a virtual tie with the Giants atop the NL West and here come the Dangerous D'Backs!  They are now just 3.5 games off the pace.

  1. Every year we as Giants fans are subjected to torture on the field and in the front office. Every off season and every trade deadline it is the same thing, Sabes tries to do the bare minimum to keep them competitive while other teams make the big splashes. In past years it might not have made sense to go for it when we were 5-10 games out of 1st place at the trade deadline but this year we are in first and apparently content to watch our division lead go down the toilet.

If the Dodgers were giving up their future to acquire guys like Hanley and League it would be one thing but all indications are that they haven't given up much to get these guys and Victorino is the next player in their sites. This tells me one of two things about Sabean, either he isn't smart/good/hard working enough to be able to get these deals done for the Giants or quite possibly other GM's don't really care to deal with him anymore.

I think it is the latter, Sabes has worn out his welcome with basically the entire league. I guarentee that Miami doesn't take his phone calls anymore. Dealing with him has to be a complete pain in the ass and other GM's don't really have any reason to accomodate him. With about 6 hours left I hope he proves me wrong and gets us another bat and another arm for the bullpen because without both of those upgrades we may be looking at another excuse filled explanation as to why we let both the Dodgers and the D-Backs overtake us in the West.

    1. Sorry Pato, but I disagree with the Dodgers not giving up a lot. I think they have pretty much gutted what little they have left in their farm system. Of course they probably don't care because their game plan is to just outspend everybody else.

Sabes goes out last year and gets Beltran and lands Scoots and Pence this year and you say he's doing the bare minimum? Oh and then you will hammer him in the offseason if they fall short and say he never should have given up the prospects. He can't win with your crowd no matter what he does.

    2. DrB I have to disagree with you in saying that the Dodgers gutted their farm system. The only top 10 prospect in their system that they traded was Nate Eovaldi who by many is a long reliever in the bigs. They still have Zach Lee, Joc Pederson, Allen Webster, ect.
If Hanley returns to being the star he was thats a huge steal for the Dodgers.

And to the criticism that Sabean has received from many fans is not only about trades. Its about how he doesn't know how to manage a team. How can you have a $130M payroll and every trade deadline your searching desperately for a hitter? Must be a joke. He's done some good but just because the Giants won a WS you can't cover-up all of his mistakes.

    3. Where have you been all my life Anonymous? I feel like I have been battling it out with Sabean family members on this site for the last year, there is a teaspoon left of water left in Sabean's cup and these guys think his glass is half full!! Eovaldi was garbage and nobody even knows who the AAA player they included in the deal was! Since when has any team ever kept their top prospects in AAA? They beat us out for Brandon League as well and just for kicks decided to add Victorino and not a single top prospect left their system.

I had no problem with getting Beltran last year but when they have said over the last few years that they didn't want to trade for a rental and then give up our best pitching prospect for 4 weeks of Beltran it irritates me. Getting Pence now is great but couldn't they have gotten him last year so that we would have had his bat in our lineup the entire year this year? If that isn't confirmation that Sabes is an idiot then I'm not sure what is. You aren't able to trade for a guy last year so you rent the next best player and give up Wheeler in the process only to find yourself trying to acquire the exact same player the very next year??? Isn't that why we have offseasons? Does any of this make any sense to you Sabean Zombies?

    4. Dodger prospects traded: Nate Eovaldi(#3), Josh Lindblom(#8), Ethan Martin(#17, former first round draft pick), Leon Landry(not in BA's pre-season top 30 but doing very well in Rancho Cucamonga). I think they gave up a lot.

I like the Hanley trade from the Dodgers standpoint, especially since it's obvious they don't care a wit about the cost. I'm a lot less enamored by the Victorino and League trades where I think they got fleeced.

  2. This should be an interesting few hours coming up. Relax and enjoy the ride!

Giants are a better club than how they've been playing. Both Scutaro and Belt barely missed being walkoff heroes. And got their hits in earlier.

Glad Agent Ned jumped on the League grenade for us. I'm not convinced Broxton is the answer but its gotta be 50-50 that will happen.

Curious who leaked the Pence rumor to KPIX. This deadline will be a straight up high noon who blinks first. The Phils are apparently sellers, we will find out soon...

Lots of Panik on the Gints interbebz. Losing 5 games will do that. This team is solid, they just have to execute. A RH OF bat would be nice though.

  3. Pato,

Come on. You are ridiculous. Go be a fool somewhere else. Provide intelligent information or commentary here. We don't need any of the MCC crazies.

Sorry DrB. I just couldn't help myself.

    1. You said it differently than I but yeah, the haters just need to relax and at least wait until the trade deadline passes to start ripping Sabes.

  4. Jake,

Where can I buy the Giants cool-aid that you seem to be drinking on a daily basis? Is it the same place that you get those orange tinted glasses that make zeros on the score board at AT&T look like 3's? At what point do legally blind Giants fans wake up and see the light? Just relax? I am ridiculous because I am being critical of a guy who has put together 1 playoff team in the last 10 years? How dare I be critical of an offense that would have had trouble winning games in AAA last year that was barely upgraded last offseason.

Hunter Pence would have been great last year yet we gave away our top pitching prospect for Beltran and then didn't resign him. How does that make sense if the decision wasn't totally 100% financially based and not based on trying to win! The division title is slipping through our fingers but don't worry Giants fans, management was able to save around 4 million by not signing Beltran and instead trading for Pence right before this team took a nose dive into the toilet. Don't you think we could have used Beltran this year up until now or possibly Pence last year and then the entire year this year? Oh right, by not paying Beltran and instead signing Pagan for 5 mil and then only having to pay 3 mil of Pence, management gets an extra 4-5 mil in their pockets.

Yeah now that I think of it I have been full of ridiculous statements all year. I really should spend more time researching stats so that I get all the facts straight. I obviously had no idea what I was talking about when I said that Craw wasn't ready, Belt had holes in his swing, Melky should be batting 3rd instead of 2nd with Blanco leading off, Cespedes was going to be good, Darvish was going to be good, or when I said that they should try and trade Timmy in the offseason. Besides the occasional half a paragraph of substance-less comments, what have you ever contributed to this blog Jake?

  5. Pato,

The minute Brian Sabean begins to value players based on a previous trade, I will call him a bad general manager.

You are right. I don't post here often. I live and die by the Giants, and think DrB's website is great. I have for years. But I don't really feel the need to post every day, because this happens. While it sounds like your baseball knowledge is great and you obviously made some great calls that many people didn't make, I just don't believe you are very rational when it comes to the San Francisco Giants organization.

The Giants and every other team in baseball has the resources to determine good and bad trades better than you and I Pato. I have opinions on things, but I am going to trust the Giants when it seems like their recent moves have worked more often than not.

  6. Cam, Solana Beach. I think the Pence acquisition will remove the miasma that's recently pervaded the G's. We all know that losing tends to put more pressure on hitters and pitchers.Scientifically speaking, here's what's currently wrong with the Giants and it's mental more than physical. G's think, when they should be reacting. There's a time to think and a time to react. As someone who studies human behavior,I know this to be an empirical fact. The dynamic between the physical and the mental aspects of sport are fascinating. K.I.S.S. Keep it Simple Stupid. Like a golf swing, once you complicate it you will have big problems.

  7. Had to change up the chemistry a bit. Pence will do that. That's one of the problems that I saw with the Beltran trade. Carlos always seemed to be doing his own thing. Calm, COOL professional. Never really seemed to be a part of the Giants. Pence is intense, which is nice.

And, he can't walk in 2013.

I wish Nate a ton of success in Philly. Change of scenery will do him good and all of that. Tough losing Tommy. He's the real deal. But gotta give to get. And Sabean didn't sell low on Brown or Panik.

Would have been nice to bring in Broxton. The Pen is shaky. Still can't believe what Street signed for in San Diego. He left a LOT of money on the table.
