John Sickels is starting a review of his pre-season top 20's for each team.  First up was the Tampa Bay Rays.  For those of you who might be hung up on organizational rankings, the Rays were BA's #11 ranked system at the beginning of the season.  Go read through Sickels' mid-season review and tell me whether you think the Rays system is significantly better than the Giants right now.

  1. Isn't Jackson Williams a plus defender with a plus arm at catcher? If so he could definitely be a backup on a MLB team.

    1. Before this year, he'd never hit over .231 at any level. I don't believe anything the PCL says.

I really enjoy a great defensive catcher (CStew was fun to watch last year), but I don't see a Giants lineup anytime soon that can take a guy playing 20% of the time, hitting .200 with an OPS under .600.

    2. Doesn't necessarily have to be with the Giants.

    3. And, Williams has played in the PCL before. His performance this year represents a significant improvement in the same environment. We'll see if it's sustainable.

BTW, my "Free ______" comments are partly tongue-in-cheek in case some haven't picked that up.

    4. DocB be careful with the sarcasm you might go the way of some other blogs that we can not name here. Or you might hurt yourself throwing yourself down the stairs.

    5. I know its sarcasm but i was just seeing if my memory was right

    6. Only partly sarcasm. Those players are having good seasons and might help some MLB team, not necessarily the Giants.

  2. DRB.

Can you name your biggest surprise and disapointment in the Giants system? Has Mike Kickham moved into the Giants top 10-15 prospects? Thanks

    1. Biggest surprise? Maybe Nick Noonan

Disappointment? I think that would have to be Joe Panik

Giants have had several pitchers emerge so not sure how much Kickham moves up but his stock has improved, on doubt.

  3. Free Villalona!

  4. Nice to see Brown progressing nicely. AAA next season and perhaps a september callup in 2013??

    1. If he remains above average, or continues the hot streak, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in SF when rosters expand. Maybe Noonan too, bumping Panik and Culbie aside.

    2. If the rumors are true about the Giants targeting Michael Bourne after this year, Brownie could turn into a nice trade chip. I saw on ESPN that Bourn already has something like a 4 WAR and Melky wasn't even on the list of top 5 outfielders for WAR. Take that for what it is worth.

    3. Could be wrong, but I believe playing CF gives you quite a bit of a head start in positional credit over LF when calculating WAR.
