AAA Tucson Padres defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 9-5:
Nick Noonan(SS)- 3 for 3, 2 2B, BB, HBP. BA= .304.
Todd Linden(RF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .286.
Noonan reached base all 5 PA's. He's hitting .340 over his last 10 games.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Harrisburg Senators 5-4:
Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 4. BA= .289.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 4 for 4, 2B. BA=.294.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 1 for 4, HR(9). BA= .241.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.98.
Brown's hitting streak comes to an end. Nice start for Gloor.
High A Visalia Rawhide beat the San Jose Giants 8-3:
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 5, HR(3). BA= .280.
Aubrey Huff(DH)- 1 for 5. BA= .250.
Brennan Metzger(LF)- 1 for 1. BA= 1.000.
Metzger is the first draftee from this year to play for a full season club. Huff is not exactly tearing up the Cal League.
Low A West Virginia Power downed the Augusta Greenjackets 8-6:
Jesus Galindo(CF)- 1 for 4, BB, 2 SB(25). BA= .210.
Brett Krill(LF)- 2 for 4. BA= .264.
Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .227.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 4.1 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.55.
Derek Law(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.09.
Mejia got hit hard after a long string of successful outings. Law was dominant. He has 28 K's against just 2 BB's in 19.1 IP over his last 10 appearances.
Short Season Yakima Bears blanked the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-0:
Stephen Branca(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .234.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.30.
Ian Gardeck(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.89.
Branca had 2 of the Volcanoes 3 hits in the game.
Rookie AZL Giants were idle.
DSL The DSL was idle.

Gardeck sure has some heavy stats. 9.1 innings & 19K's.

Gardeck is not a complete unknown. He was the 8'th round draft pick of the White Sox last year. He went to a new school for this season and for some reason never got untracked. He has a high 90's FB with strikeout stuff. Obviously, the Giants did not forget about him and grabbed him in this year's draft. Could be the Heath Hembree of this year's draft, but there are several candidates.
DeleteOff the top of my head we have about six or so power reliever arms in the system right now.
DeleteCody Hall, Bryce Bandilla (though I hope he stays as a starter), Derek Law, Stephen Johnson, Steven Okert, and Ian Gardeck. All can dial it up to mid 90's and in some cases upper 90's. That's a lot of power arms to chose from.
That should have read six power arms in the lower minors. I didn't even include Hembree, Bochy (not sure if he is a power arm or just an above average reliever), Josh Osich, Jose Valdez, or EJ (Eduardo Encinosa). Hopefully a few of these guys make it.
DeleteI think Jose Valdez has lost some fastball velocity. I saw him pitch an inning in San Jose recently and his fastball was 89-93 miles per hour, according to the stadium gun. Drew Bowlin pitched an inning and hit 92 mph three times, harder than i expected. Seth Rosin, who started, threw his fastball 88-92 and hit 93 once. He was consistently able to hit 92. Due to a chain-link fence obstructing my view of the area around home plate, I could not see the action on breaking balls. Valdez used an offspeed pitch in the 78 mph range, probably a curve.
ReplyDeleteI saw Valdez earlier this season in San Bernardino. He was 89-93 on that night too. He's so dang big, though, he releases the ball much closer to home plate, so the ball gets there pretty quick. He appeared to have much better command this year than when I saw him last year. He had a sharp breaking ball he could throw for strikes too. Don't give up on Valdez, folks!
