Down on the Farm: 7/11/2012

AAA  PCL was idle.

AA  EL was idle.

High A  Modesto Nuts rolled over the San Jose Giants 9-0:

Justin Schumer(RHP)- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.78.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets stung the Greenville Drive 4-2:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .307.
Devin Harris(RF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .667.
Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 1 for 2, HBP, SB(25).  BA= .226.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 2.05.

Obviously, the big news here is the return of Bandilla to the Augusta rotation after a rehab stint in Arizona.  He gave up some hits, but the K and BB numbers were spectacular.

Short Season  Yakima Bears held of a late rally by the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to win 8-7:

Kentrell Hill(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .200.
Joseph Rapp(1B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .270.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 3 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .287.
Joe Biagini(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 10 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.  ERA= 3.26.

RafRod!  Biagini's peripheral numbers were actually quite good in this one.  He has 24 K against 7 BB's in 19.1 IP.  Walk rate a bit high, but the K rate looks great.

Rookie AZL  Giants topped the Reds 6-5:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .258.
Jean Delgado(SS)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .267.
Cristian Paulino(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .224.
Cristian Otero(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.
Jose Reyes(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.08.

A couple of the kids drafted last year out of Puerto Rico getting into the highlights.

DSL  Nationals crushed the Giants 15-5:

Kleiber Rivas(C)- 1 for 1, 2 BB.  BA= .111.
Emmanuel Hernandez(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .182.
Julio Pena(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .243.

I think Rivas is the youngest player on the DSL Giants squad. He turned 17 yo on 6/22/2012.

  1. Great outing by Bandilla hopefully he can keep it for the remainder of the season

    1. If Bandilla can consistently keep his walks down the remainder of the season, his stock will be WAY up in the next Giants prospect rankings.

    2. Oh, and I'm really glad the Giants are letting a few of these college reliever prospects take a stab at starting. They have the size and velocity to have high ceilings as starters and their relieving skills will be enhanced by the starting experience if they have to go back to the bullpen.

  2. Giants signed Agosta fot 613k and Williamson for 390k according to Jim Calis. Its great that they addressed their pitching depth and got another athletic OF with these picks.

  3. Mac Williamson was an overdraft and is another Jarrett Parker. Wasted of money and a wasted draft pick

    1. I'd have to agree with that analysis, though both Parker and Williamson have a fair amount of potential even if they are unlikely to see much major league action.

  4. When our newest big International Signing Gustovo Cabrera gonna be playing on the DSL?

    1. International signees from this year are not allowed to play in games until next season.

    2. What is the "standard" life-cycle of a Latin signee? 2-3 years in DSL, then 1 year in AZL, then re-assess? So we should expect to see Javier and Cabrera crack the "REAL" minor league teams by '16 or '17?

    3. Villalona and RafRod both went straight to Arizona after signing 7 figure contracts so we could see Cabrera in the AZL next year. "Standard" is probably 1 year in the DSL then 1 year in Rookie ball. Generally speaking, repeating the DSL is a bad prognostic sign.

    4. Thanks. So MAYBE Cabrera in Augusta by '14 and Javier there by '15...

      Gross estimations, of course...

    5. Those are probably the most optimistic scenarios.
