Game Wrap 7/28/2012: Dodgers 10 Giants 0

Matt Kemp took Barry Zito deep in the first inning and the Dodgers went on to dominate the Giants in every phase of the game.  Key Lines:

Barry Zito- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.89.  Can't really criticize the pitch to Kemp in the first.  It looked like a cutter down and in, off the plate.  Kemp just pulled his arms in and dropped the head of the bat on it and it went.  That was pretty much the ballgame right there.

Chad "Patchy Beard" Billingsley- 7.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 12/5.  Couldn't really tell if Billz was all that of if the Giants attack was just pathetic.  I'm leaning toward the latter, and yeah, Scoots is not going to make us forget about Pablo over the next two weeks or however long he's out.

The Dodgers climbed to 1 game behind the NL West leading Giants in the standings.  D'Backs play tonight.

Ryan Vogelsong tries to be the Kershaw slayer for the 3'rd time this season tomorrow afternoon also trying to avoid a payback sweep by the Dodgers.

  1. Visiting teams don't seem to be fazed by AT&T's dimensions. G's do, only 16 big flies. Panda's absence no doubt offset by dynamic duo of Huff/Eli. The nearest thing to a White Knight would appear to be Whiteside. Hate to say it but what I saw today on Fox could be a taste of things to come. John.

    1. Not sure why you would base your assessment of the future on one game and ignore everything that came before.

Park factors are calculated by both the home team performance and by visiting team performance. AT&T suppresses HR's for everybody. Matt Kemp is an elite HR hitter. Giants don't have a hitter like that, but have a deeper lineup, at least when Pablo is healthy.

Giants could definitely use another hitter with some pop. Reportedly they are still kicking the tires on Hunter Pence. He's not exactly Matt Kemp, but would be an upgrade on Nate or Pagan in the OF.

    2. I can think of one reason why I would base my assessment of the future on one game, last year. Things were going great and right around when Beltran showed up they ran out of smoke and mirrors. Unfortunately that is exactly what this offense is, smoke and mirrors. We are counting on everyone to have career years and stay healthy and it is ridiculous to expect that to happen for a full season.

With Panda out it exposes us much like we were exposed last year when Posey got injured except last year they were able to keep it going for a while much like they did this year when Panda was out for 6 weeks. The wheels probably will fall off and games like Saturday and even Friday night are likely to be the norm. The second half of last year ended up turning out the same, no production from the top of the lineup, not enough power in the middle of the lineup, automatic outs at the end of the lineup, and starting pitchers who are worn out.

Sabean is a good GM but this is where he is weakest. The Beltran trade last year was a good move that didn't work out as planned but not doing anything this year in fear of it not working out is foolish. If Sabes doesn't do anything significant before the deadline then we may be looking at a wildcard at best. One more solid bat would at the very least take a ton of pressure off of guys like Pagan, Melky, and Posey who are expected to carry this offense.

    3. I don't agree it's all smoke and mirrors. With a 2-6 lineup of Riot, Melky, Posey, Pablo and Pagan that's 5 really solid batters at the core. I don't know of any team out there who can lose one of core members of the middle of their batting order without missing a beat. The Dodgers kept it going for awhile without Kemp, but the wheels eventually came off. What they need right now, is a better leadoff hitter and one more hitter with some pop in his bat.

There are enough rumors out there about the Giants being seriously in on hitters ranging from Ichiro to Pence that I think we can say Sabes is fully aware of where they need to improve. It's just that if Philly is demanding a package of Brown, Joseph AND Crick for Pence, what's Sabes supposed to do?

so tired of the hype that surrounded him

and to get pence is gonna cost more than he is worth

cannot be down pablo the fat and hector and expect to do anything

    1. I think the important thing with thee Pence and Ichiro rumors is that they indicate that the Giants brass is actively trying to improve the team. Let's hold the pronouncements or whether they gave up too much or too little until the deadline passes.

A general rule of thumb is fans tend to overvalue their team's prospects and if a team is sitting in first place but needs to improve to stay there, you have to go for it.

    2. I don't think fans should blame Sabean if they don't make a big trade. Baggs reported 2 days ago that about the owners reluctance to a big increase in payroll.. I can't blame them because they already have a big payroll $130 mil and have been burned several times (Rowand, Zito, Huff, Sanchez)..

I'll be shocked if Pence is traded anywhere. If the Flying Hawaiian (Victorino) is traded to the G's, he'll help the team no doubt, and make the many Giants fans here in the islands very happy.

    1. Well, you can chalk one up in the I Was Right column for yourself on Blackley. It's a good feeling when you pick a darkhorse and they win.

    2. Can I do an I told you so as well for Cespedes? He seems to be ligit to me. Would have loved to have a bat like his in the middle of our lineup. Would have loved to have had Hanley in the middle of our lineup as well but the Marlins probably don't answer Sabes phone calls anymore. They probably gave LA such a good deal on him partly to piss off Sabes.

    3. Let's just say I picked up Cespedes for my fantasy team and he's delivering so far.

  5. Hard to envision a team with little power and even worse with risp to make post season. L.A. exposed the G's overrated pitching this weekend. I realize Panda's out but he doesn't have nearly the HR power of Kemp. The latter's absence kept L.A. from being up by 7 or more games. It's easy to predict that the Giants as currently constructed won't make the post season. I envision a paradigm shift in NL West wherein the Giants join the Pads as the have not teams who cannot compete financially with the Dodgers. Until Giants somehow acquire at least 2 or more power bats and effective relievers, the torture will continue for many years to come. Yes, they could turn it around, and Huff could win the 2013 batting title. John.

    1. That's such a ridiculous take that I came about this close to hitting the button on it as a trolling comment. Better kick it up a notch on this site, my friend.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Dodgers new owners intend to spend a lot of money and will be the team to beat in the NL West for years to come, but to say it's easy to predict the Giants not making the post-season when there are two Wild Card playoff spots sounds like something a trolling Dodger fan might say. As for Huff, his contract is done at the end of this season. You can mark it down. He won't be a Giant in 2013.

  6. I seriously question the Dr.in the DrBGiants fan.we all feel that the only doctoring you do is with the facts. Moreover, the fact you can't grasp the analogy as regards Huff, tells me you can't be a Doctor,as doctors are intelligent. My friends also say you're arrogant. If you publish my comments, you'll appear a fool.If you delete, you'll remove all doubt.John.

  7. John,I think,no,I know that you crossed the line re the intelligence of DrBGiantsfan.I'm sure that you reacted before you had time to think. That said,I do agree with both yourself and now Vancouver Ian,that opposition jacks have contributed to 20 or more G's losses.Under scoring the absolute need for a dinger producer was Monday night's game where once again a player from an opposition team won the game with 2 dingers.Overrated pitching,no clutch with risp. Cam, Solano Beach, S.D.
