Game Wrap 7/7/2012: Pirates 3 Giants 1

The Giants offense got shut down by a hot pitcher who has always had excellent stuff and his on top of his game right now.  That's about all she wrote for this one.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4.  BA= .255.
Ryan Theriot- 2 for 4.  BA= .280.  The top two batters in the lineup had an OBP of .500 for the game.  The only other hitter in the lineup to reach base was Brandon Crawford hitting in the 8 hole.  Giants hitters struck out a total of 13 times in the game against 0 BB's.

Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.36.  Yet another QS for Vogelsong.  I'm sure he said he should have pitched a shutout.

James McDonald(Pirates)- 7 IP, 4 H 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.37.  I know OGC has a statistical explanation as to why McDonald is going to regress.  The problem with that analysis is it does not account for career trajectory as  McDonald has always had excellent stuff and underachieved with it.  He's not maturing into a complete pitcher who can command all of his pitches and he's a good one.  Barring injury, he should be good for a long time.

Dodgers and D'Backs play tonight out west.

A struggling Tim Lincecum takes on a resurgent AJ Burnett in an afternoon game tomorrow.

    1. Saw that about Clayton Tanner. We'll see if he has anything left. Getting cut by Cincy not a good sign.

    2. Oh, and this umps wacky K-zone can't be as bad as what happened to Zack Grienke, although it was pretty stupid of him to spike the ball. I'm just annoyed because Grienke is on my fantasy team and I count on him for QS with lots of K's.

    4. Yeah, I didn't like the way that ump had a smirk on his face afterwards. It was like he knew he screwed up and didn't care.

I like Bryce Harper and think he has a tremendous future. I'm not sure he's done enough this year to merit and All-Star berth on performance. There has to be some other OF out there having a better season. Harper has already become one of the more recognizable names and faces in the game though and the A-S game is as much about popularity and name recognition as performance.

Giants fans don't have much to complain about this year though.

  2. A few things about my assertion about McDonald's potential regression.

I am not saying that he's going to regress to his career norms. He appears to have improved himself, per DrB's comment.

What I was commenting on was that his great numbers reflect his great dominance at home, despite peripherals that were very similar to his road numbers, only his home ERA is half that of his road ERA. Still, great peripherals at home, so a regression towards his road ERA is still a very good ERA, plus he has great ERA in first half, so the overall ERA would most probably drift towards his road ERA. Particularly with that low HR/9 he has at home, where the park is a bandbox, though there is the possibility that he figured out how to pitch in the park so that he can avoid homers.

Also, sometimes a player just has a great year and the regression don't happen until next season or late. In Ubaldo's case, he regressed almost immediately after the Giants took him apart. In McDonald's case, I noticed that his recent starts at home were not as strong as his earlier starts, so I thought perhaps the Giants might have a chance to do something. But, good for him, he won the battle of the ERA leaders, he stepped it up. Then again, from what I hear, bouncing in and out on the broadcast, the Giants sounded like they were very anxious up at bat (I know, small sample), which made it easier for him to get them out.

So I was not saying that he wasn't good, I was just saying that he was having a lot more success at home than his peripherals seemed to warrant, and that his home numbers should do down at some point. I should have but didn't mention that he would, as minimum, be good in any case. That coupled with recent difficulties at home, I thought maybe the Giants might be able to pull out a win with Vogelsong pitching. But I thought it would be a battle, but just didn't convey that tone very well.
