Down on the Farm: 7/25/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies crushed the Las Vegas 51's 12-1:

Brock Bond(DH)- 3 for 5.  BA= .338.
Brett Pill(1B)- 3 for 5, 2 HR(7).  BA= .295.
Todd Linden(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .279.
Ryan Lollis(CF)- 3 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .333.
Eric Hacker(RHP)- 8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.48.

I wonder if Pill senses an opportunity opening in SF?

AA  Bowie Baysox blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .289.
Nick Liles(LF)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .272.

High A  Bakersfield Blaze came from behind to down the San Jose Giants 4-2:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(17).  BA= .246.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.31.

I wonder if there were scouts from other teams at this one?  Rosin seems like a guy other GM's might have an interest in and who the Giants might be willing to part with.

Low A  Lexington Legends out hit the Augusta Greenjackets 9-5:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 1 for 2, 3 BB, SB(38).  BA= .313.
Brett Krill(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .265.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 6 R, 5 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.29.
Kyle Vazquez(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.60.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.27.

Vazquez has an ERA of 2.38 over his last 10 appearances with 12 K's in 11.1 IP, and a GO/AO= 2.67. Yikes Chris Marlowe!

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Everett Aquasox 6-4:

Kentrell Hill(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .302.
Matthew Duffy(SS)- 0 for 3, 2 BB, SB(8).  BA= .237.
Chuckie Jones(CF)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .240.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .222.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .308.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 7.11.
Chris Johnson(RHP)-  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.43.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.00.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.87.

Hill is hitting .452 over his last 10 games. He's had multi-hit games in 8 of his last 10.  Chuckie Jones has a 7 game hit streak going.  What's up with Stratton?

Rookie AZL  Giants downed the Brewers 3-1:

Randy Ortiz(DH)- 1 for 4, 2 SB(13).  BA= .267.
Tyler Hollick(CF)- 2 for 4, BB, SB(3).  BA= .375.
John Polonius(SS)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .393.
Jonathan Jones(1B)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .270.
Matt Lujan(LHP)- 4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.48.
Scotty Walker(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.40.

Jonathan Jones is hitting .372 over his last 10 games.  Hollick and Polonius continue their hot hitting.

DSL  Giants dominated the D'backs/Reds 7-1:

Carlos Valdez(RF)- 2 for 3, HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .252.
Hengerber Medina(SS-3B)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(6).  BA= .328.
Alejandro Flores(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.78.

Valdez might be the top prospect on the DSL team.  Good to see him have a good game like this.

  1. Saw a few scouts at the San Jose game, one from the Jays and didn't catch where the others were from. Going to be interesting to see how the Jarrad Page signing pans out.

    1. I guess you never know who they are scouting or maybe they are scouting everybody! I have noticed that I tend to see more scouts in the 2-3 weeks leading up to the trade deadline though.

Jays, hmm....Juan Encarnacion would be a RH power bat. There's also Adam Lind. Not sure I'm crazy about either of those.

  2. I honestly think Payne belongs in Richmond with Brown in the Outfield to finish the season to really show the organization where he is a Prospect. Payne has range, speed, patience at the plate, great attitude towards the game & he hits consistently. What else do you want from the guy??? to tap dance LOL Plain & Simple he has Talent & it dont take a rocket scientist to see that in this Giants system......

    1. Payne should have at least been upped to SJ. 38SB w/ 2CS. Wasn't he 34SB and 0CS at one time? Dude has serious some wheels...

Crick is on MiLB.TV this evening around 4:35 PM PST.

    3. Payne is doing very nicely in Augusta but that's roughly where he belongs right now. Right now, he's 34th in OPS in the Sally, even though he's 22 YO and that's slightly above the average age of hitters and pitchers in that league right now. AA is two leagues higher, and that much more better pitching, so there is no way he would even be among the top hitters in AA if he were jumped there now. Only top prospects do well in AA at age 22, and there is no ranking service that would say that he is a top prospect. So no, it is not plain & simple.

Still, nothing wrong with where he is now. If he can continue to do well at each level, he could reach AA at 24 and the majors at 26, and still have a nice long major league career. Or hit even better and climb even faster.

The plain and simple is that unless a hitter is batting over 1000 OPS, he's probably right around where he should be as a prospect. He probably has weak spots that even the low talent pitchers in that level can exploit, and he will need to solve those weak spots in order to move up to the next level.

Payne clearly needs to work on his strikeouts, which while not bad, is not good either (he needs to get his contact rate above 85%). And when he rises a level, a good chunk of those walks will disappear as the pitchers will be better at throwing strikes more consistently.

Plus, his ISO is very low, and as we have learned with Burriss, it don't matter how good you hit if you can't really hit for any power. Payne might not be utilizing all his natural strengths by swinging to get grounders, chopping at the ball, much like Andre Torres was taught so that his speed would get him on base more (and apparently Burriss too). But as he learned, not on base enough to make and stay in the majors.

Payne needs to study Ted Williams Science of Hitting, or try to get time with the Giants video training system and see how Belt changed his hitting mechanics to hit more line drives (Noonan reported that he saw more line drives too). Heck, hook up with that guy who taught Torres, he is on the web and can be contacted via his website, and Payne could work with him long-distance, like Torres did until he nearly had it all together, at which point he made a trip out to see his teacher. Better to learn now, while he's young, than wait until he's past 30 like Torres, with little time left.

  3. What team wouldn't want a 6'6" hard thrower with good off-speed and a k rate of about 12 per 9 IP ? Rosin is a very valuable asset that I'm sure many teams would love to have. I just hope our guys figure out how to use him and get him moving through the system. He has a fantastic future ahead at ATT

    1. I think it is clear that the Giants believe in him more than others. Most commentary I saw thought that the Giants overdrafted him, and some thought that he was at best a reliever, making him a clear overdraft in their opinion.

Given his K-rate and success, I don't think the Giants will be parting with him any time this season.
