Down on the Farm: 7/10/2010

AAA  PCL was idle.

AA  EL was idle

High A  Cal League was idle.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Greenville Drive 4-1:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB. BA= .224.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(32).  BA= .304.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .267.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.81.
Steven Neff(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.94.

Not sure why Blackburn only went 4 innings.  Maybe because it was 95 degrees at game time?  Another dominant outing for him.  I'd like to see what he could do in San Jose, but if the Giants didn't promote Bumgarner from Augusta, they are not going to promote Blackburn.

Short Season  NWL was idle.

Rookie AZL  AZL was idle

DSL  Giants edged the Nationals 2-1:

Carlos Valdez(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .259.
Nicol Parra(LF)- 1 for 1, 2 BB, SF, SB(14).  BA= .270.
Keury Mella(RHP, 18 yo)- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.27.
Diomedes Mateo(LHP, 22 yo)- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 1.65.

Valdez is a 6 figure bonus baby.  Parra seems like a dynamic player.  Mella is a promising pitching prospect.  No scouting report.  Not sure what to make of Mateo.  He has now pitched 12.1 IP in his last 2 appearances, both in relief.  He has 18 K's in those 12 IP.  But, he's 22 yo and in the DSL.  Apparently Mateo is dumpster dive from the Pirates organization.

  1. There was a game delay so I assumed they did not want him to risk injury by pitching again. Can you tell me anything else about him that I could not find out by looking at his stats? Any opinions or feedback about Blackburn would be appreciated. Also nice blog and community you have here.

    1. Thank you. Welcome to the When the Giants Come to Town. The readers and the comments they make are a huge part of what makes it good.

BA's scouting report on Blackburn has him with a low 90's sinking FB that he throws to both sides of the plate. He has a good feel for the curve and locates his changeup. He also has the makings of a slider. Also is able to add and subtract from the FB. Has an advanced feel for pitching.

Since that report, I've read reports of him getting his velocity up to the 93-94 range.

  2. Rain delay after the 4th. Too bad, but at least he wasn't injured or anything.

    1. Glad to hear about the rain delay. I didn't notice that when I wrote it up. Not sure I want the youngsters in Augusta pitching deep into games anyway. In fact, I'm pretty sure I don't!

  3. Anybody know anything about relievers Law and Neff? Law has seemed to be rock solid all year while I remember Neff being destroyed at the beginning of the year but look up now and see his ERA in the 2's..Contrary to the starters, they do seem a little old for the league...Amyway,.Any opeds on these guys?

  4. DrB I didn't participate on the A/Q thread but I saw your top 5 pitching prospects and am going to ask you if Bryce Bandilla was far off from making your top 5?? Do you see Stratton, Krick and Blackburn forming the Giants rotation by 2015?? And who do you see having ace potential?? About G Brown do you see him becoming a .300 hitter in the bigs? He's smashing AA in the last 20-30 games like he smashed A+. Thank you.

    1. Bryce Bandilla has serious raw talent, but needs to conquer serious command/control issues.

I could see Brown hitting in the .300-.320 range in the majors, but more likely in the .270-.290 range.

2015 is a long ways off. Cain and Bumgarner will still be under contract. I think Stratton, Crick and Blackburn all have bright futures barring injury, but I would not want to speculate on a 2015 rotation just yet.

  5. Pro Payne is extremely fast, he clocked the fastest time in the whole organization in Spring Training & is hitting for average with a few HR's in his 1st full season. My guess is they move him up to SJ next year or by the end of this season & really get a up an close view of all his skills upfront. If you didnt know this about "Shawn Payne" he played short-stop since little league & all threw High School and at Middle Georgia they moved him to 2B for 2years & at Georgia Southern that is where they moved him to the outfield because of his range. All in All for a 35th round pick that nobody thought about seriously, he is the Mike Piazza of the 2011 draft & I cant wait to see him move threw the system with flying colors & the respect to follow....

He's doing a Great Job by the numbers to ME???

    1. Payne is putting up some very interesting numbers for Augusta but is on the old side for the level. He'll have to prove it each step along the way, which is kind of an obvious statement as all prospects have to prove it each step along the way, right?

  6. According to Baseball America, Keurry Mella's fastball can reach 93 miles per hour and his curve has the potential to be a plus pitch.

    1. Mella is one of several interesting prospects on this year's DSL Giants team. In contrast to prior years, most of the more interesting ones are position prospects.

  7. Your definitely right DrB but ok he hit for average at every level (college, shortseason & now @ low A ball) for a 35th round draft pick you got a Solid Prospect, regardless of his age 22 turning 23 this Friday. They assigned him for the SAL and he's doing his job by proving his worth by puttin up numbers all across the board: 1st in avg, 1st in obp, 1st in slg, 2nd in Hrs, 2nd in rbis & his 32 for 32 SB's - Best in the whole league (now that's a Smart Baserunner). Giants got a steal with Payne no matter how anyone looks at.. #GoGiants The Future Pitchers are Great in Hall, Law, Meija & Hitters like Panik, Brown, Parker, Adrianza and Payne pushing threw the ranks, the Giants have a Bright Bright Future.

    1. I don't want to be the debbie downer but the giants system is in the bottom 1/2, maybe in the middle of the pack. While the giants are drafting and developing well they need to to stay competitive in the bottom 1/2 of the draft. Its nice looking at the system and seeing players progress and make careers but there is a fine line between being optimistic and overrating your own system.

    2. Anon,

I'm cautiously optimistic on Payne. Let's see him get through AA before we get too irrationally exuberant about him.

      Logan,

You make a valid point, but there is also a fine line between being realistic and underrating your own system.
