Down on the Farm: 7/1/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Tacoma Rainiers 12-3:

Skyler Stromsmoe(3B)- 2 for 6, 2 2B.  BA= .257.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 3, HR(3), 3 BB.  BA= .302.
Francisco Peguero(CF)- 2 for 6.  BA= .267.
Brett Pill(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .303.
Todd Linden(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(7), BB.  BA= .284.
Eli Whiteside(C)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .225.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.15.

Noonan is having a terrific season.  Love the K/BB.  Not sure how he fits into the Giants future, but he's played 3 IF positions which helps his chances.  Noonan has been in the system seemingly forever(drafted the same year as Madison Bumgarner), but age 23 in AAA is not terrible.

Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Akron Aeros 6-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 4 for 5, 2B.  BA= .267.
Nick Liles(LF)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .239.
Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 3, 2 BB, SB(10).  BA= .283.
Mike Kickham(LHP0- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.81.

Brown's first 4 hit game of the season.  When Kickham keeps the walks down, he dominates.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 10-3:

Ryan Lollis(RF)- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(5).  BA= .297.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 3 for 5.  BA= .264.
Alex Burg(LF)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .265.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 3 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .267.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 4.25.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets game was postponed.

Short Season  Salem Keizer Volcanoes buried the Vancouver Canadians 5-1:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 3 for 4, 3 SB(5).  BA= .271.
Dashenko Ricardo(C)- 3 for 4.  BA= .389.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.23.
Matt Graham(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.50.

Rookie AZL  Giants smacked down the Mariners 8-1:

Shayne Houck(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Christian Diaz(RF)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .222.
Christian Otero(2B)- 2 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .238.

The Puerto Rican contingent gets their names in the highlights today.

Today is the first day to sign international players who turned 16 within the last year.  As expected, the Blue Jays, Yankees and Phillies are the most active teams in the early signings.  The Giants have tended to stay out of the scrum of signing day in recent year and then pick up multiple players for bonuses in the low-mid 6 figure range.  I expect them to continue that strategy this year while hoping that the new bonus cap will cause some talent to fall into that range.

A few names the Giants have been linked to:  Natanial Javier, 3B, DR.  Melvin Novoa, C, Nicaragua,  Juan Carlos Paniagua, RHP, DR.  Paniagua seems to be the most pricy of that bunch.

The Giants have had some early successes with their mid-range strategy with Adalberto Mejia, Kendry Flores, Joan Gregorio, Jesus Galindo and Randy Ortiz on U.S. teams in the low minors and Royel Astacio, Anthony Gomez, Carlos Valdez, Nicoll Parra, and Hengerber Medina on the current DSL team.

The Giants have also signed a couple of mid-high 6 figure range guys such as Duanel Jones and Simon Mercedes whose contracts were later voided due to age/substance issues or undisclosed injury.

  1. GUSTAVO CABRERA BABY! Home run signing. Beautiful work.

Also got Natanael Javier, I was prepared for him to be the big splash.

    1. This is freaking great!!! See if this article doesn't get you excited. Love the last line from the scout as well.

      OF GUSTAVO CABRERA

      6-1/190, R/R, 1/23/96, LaRomana, DR
      PG Grade: 10

Cabrera is the player that all the scouts want to see and is going to perhaps be the prospect who will lose the most by the new international signing rules. In the previous unlimited free market system he was likely a $4-to-$5 million dollar player. With the $2.9 million limit per team, he’ll be looking at something more in the neighborhood of $1.5 million.

Cabrera has a tightly wound athletic body reminiscent of Justin Upton. In fact, Cabrera’s tools at the same age are very reminiscent of Upton’s. He ran the 60 in 6.34 seconds in Arizona and has an explosive first step that enables him to steal bases at will (he had 5 steals in one game in Florida) and the aggressiveness and instincts to use his speed. He throws 90-plus mph from the outfield with a very quick release and his speed will give him well above average range at any outfield position.

Cabrera’s hitting mechanics from the right side are still on the raw side, with an early drift to his front side in games and some back side collapse on his swing, but he has electric bat speed and as much home run power as any player on the DPL roster. Any scout who saw his batting practice in Dunedin will remember the line drive he hit off the Blue Jays minor league building in left centerfield.

Interestingly, scouts following Cabrera may have been left a bit frustrated by his game at-bats, as he walked in a majority of his plate appearances in both Florida and Arizona. That’s obviously not a negative, but he walked in 5 of the 7 plate appearances that PG scouts saw him in Arizona, plus drawing 2 walks and a HPB in the DPL/Red Sox game in Florida.

One PG scout remarked after seeing Cabrera for four days, “I haven’t been to Japan (or anywhere else) but I suspect that this is the best 16-year old baseball player on the planet.”

    2. This totally makes up for the draft

    3. I hope this puts an end to any discussion of the Giants being cheap or walking away from upside.

I don't see it as making up for the draft, as I thought they did quite well in the draft, thank you. I see it as adding to the draft.

    4. I'm not getting into that sinkhole again. They did very very well today.

  2. From what I have read on these guys, I would guess Cabrera would be on par of a mid-first rounder and Javier on par with a late-first / Sup round pick. would you gues who really follow this stuff agree with this?

    1. Think top 5 athletically. Here is an article comparing him to Bryon Buxton who was drafted number two overall. He's basically his equal and he is two years younger.

I think it's fair to call Javier a late first/Sup Round pick. Here is another nice little blub on him here. Notice the power already at 16 and the ability to stick at third base. We got him for 475,000.

"If I had to choose, the two most impressive BPs were Nathanael Javier and Amaurys Minier. Javier is a right-handed batter with lots of strength. He has by far the best plate coverage of any of the players and his bat is in the strike zone for a long time. His swing is quick with smooth and easy bat speed. He had a “wow” BP, especially on his third round when he cut it loose. He launched three homers with easy far over the left field wall with almost no effort. To say the ball jumps off his bat is overused in scouting and really doesn’t do Javier justice. I’m not sure if it leaps, bounds, hop, or springs off his bat, but it is quite impressive.

  3. I don't know if the Giants are the right organisation for a raw hitter. Hopefully this time they strike gold. DrB will Cabrera make your top 10 prospect list?? Finally the Giants get 2 upside HS hitters to accompany Tommy Joseph, this system neede this badly. Great move.

  4. About whether or not the Giants are the right organization for a raw hitter like Cabrera, it's important to note that the Giants lack of home grown position players who become stars in the major leagues is greatly augmented by the fact that the Giants simply haven't drafted many such players.

  5. They still have money left you think they will go after another high profile guy?

    1. Aren't teams limited to about 3M total for IFAs now? Seeing as they have spent almost 2M on these two guys, I am not sure they have much wiggle room for another big signing. MAYBE 1 more semi-big guy, but they need to keep some $$ for the bulk/roster fillers.

    2. According to an MLB article, they have $1.1M left to spend, so they could get another high profile guy, someone on MLB's Top 20 list perhaps (Cabrera is #1, Javier #11) (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/#list=int)

    3. Oh, limit is $2.9M for every team and teams can trade part of their allotment to other teams, not sure if there are any limitations on that or not.

    4. I think most likely they will sign a few more low-mid 6 figure guys. They might not sign them right away as the Giants have historically signed international players throughout the year.

    5. Better strategy now to see and wait what shakes out, there could be some very nice low-mid 6 figure guys left later. Although there a couple of nice pitchers who might be 600-900K that would really tie the room together...

    6. Selfishly I am hoping for Jose Castillo. 6'4 200 pound LHP who can already touch 90-91 on the radar gun.

Pitching heavy for the draft and hitting heavy for international signings? That would make this draft make sense.
