Game Wrap 7/1/2012: Giants 4 Reds 3

The Giants and Reds played a nail biter out at AT&T today and tensions were evident.  The Giants got another excellent performance from Ryan Vogelsong.  The bullpen blew a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth, mainly due to excellent hitting by the Reds.  Santiago Casilla held on with the score tied and the bases loaded with no outs to preserve the tie score.  The Giants then mounted a 2 out rally in the bottom of the ninth and Jay Bruce inexplicably let a fly ball off the bat of Angel Pagan fall behind him for a walk-off RBI double.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 0 for 5.  BA= .249.  Blanco hit the ball hard a couple of time, but is clearly slumping.

Ryan Theriot- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .272.  Hard to believe Riot's OBP is barely above .300.  He seems to be in the middle of everything lately.

Melky Cabrera- 2 for 4, Sac.  BA= .352.  Melky keeps the hit parade going.  He also ended up as the top OF vote getter for the All-Star Game.  More no that later.

Buster Posey- 3 for 4, 2B, HBP.  BA= .303.  Terrific game for Buster who will be the starting catcher for the NL All-Stars.  Drove in 2 runs and scored the game winner.

Brandon Belt- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(5).  BA= .269.  Terrific game for Belt too, although his hits did not figure in the scoring.

Ryan Vogelsong- 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.26.  Vogey took a no-hitter into the 5'th inning.  He may have been thinking a bit too much about what might have been when made one bad pitch to Todd Frazier to give the Reds a temporary 2-1 lead. I think Vogelsong has an idea not so far in the back of his head that he's going to pitch a no-hitter one of these days.  I think he's pretty much said so himself.  He flashed some anger when Arroyo knocked him down twice in a row while trying to sacrifice.  It ended up as just a bunch of standing around while words were exchanged, but it seemed to light a fire under both Vogey and the rest of the Giants.

Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.61.  Casilla allowed Lopez' inherited runner to score and gave up hits to the first 3 batters he faced.  I thought all 4 of the Reds hits in the 9'th inning were more due to good hitting and possibly some BABIP luck than to bad pitching by Lopez and Casilla.  Digging out of the bases loaded jam in a tie game was a herculean effort for Casilla.

The D'Backs already lost today 2-1 to the BrewCrew to slide 5 games back of the NL West leading Giants.  The Mets and Dodgers are tied 3-3 in the 6'th inning of their game.

The Giants have tomorrow off before beginning a 3 game series against the NL East leading Nationals with Tim Lincecum facing Jordan Zimmermann.

Giants fans put on a big push apparently at least partially instigated by an appearance by Brian Wilson on the TV broadcast to urge them on.  Melky, Pablo and Posey all won starting nods and Matt Cain was named to the NL pitching staff.  I'm sure the Melkmen are in 7'th heaven about now and I can't wait to read about it in Fangraphs tomorrow.  LOL!  I think all 3 are deserving although Pablo's case is hurt by the amount of time he missed with the injury.

Update:  Dodgers pull away from the Mets 8-3 so remain 1 game behind the Giants in the NL West.

  1. im tired of mlb lies regarding oversight of the umps...there is none...two games in a row of umps making up their own k zone is unconscionable...

except for cain, who had an offday, the giants staff pretty much shut down the reds

seems that doofus is still pissed at baer and the org, but that doesnt excuse his calling for arroyo to go head hunting...on the final day of a series...its bush, and i really hope that payback comes when the giants face cinci..

as for the as voting...its a joke

the mlb says that there are safeguards...safeguards for online voting? hahahahahaa

they wanted big numbers...they got them. but it really is a joke

and vogey, maddy and romo deserve to go...with casilla on the bubble

but what the heck...nothing to do in kc anyway, except go to the negro league museum...ive been there...its flat and boring

    1. All Star voting is a joke. The "record breaking" numbers mean nothing. Melky and Buster, ok, that's fine. But Pablo. Sorry. He missed a month. And while he's done well while playing, he hasn't dominated like Kemp. C'mon.

And it is a shame that Vogelsong gets the shaft. He definitely deserves to go.

I thought it was funny that LaHair got selected and he's not even the starter anymore with Rizzo up.

    2. All-Star voting is a joke? The whole All-Star Game is a joke! I stopped paying any attention to it at all quite a few years ago. I don't even turn the TV on when it's on. I don't bother to vote because I don't care. You know a game has become completely irrelevant when the HR derby, which is pretty much a joke itself, is better TV.

    1. Blackley is doing good. Glad he has found a home. Oakland is a pretty good place to revive a career. Giants have been good at helping people do that too. Just not enough room for everybody. I like to think the Giants coaching and atmosphere had something to do with Blackely's success, though.

    2. that and the sk. asian leagues are very good for some pitchers

im sure that the 2 years in japan, helped vogey with his focus on the mound

really hope you watch the csn vid of vogey...hes frickin scary...its cool

also, bonds once again stated his want to return to teach...would be a crime not to allow that

    3. I'm also really happy to see Blackley have success in Oakland. (His first few starts over there were shaky.) It was the same with Rajai. Giants just got caught in a personnel crunch in both situations. Good for them.

    4. Bacci,

You mean the video of Vogelsong going off on Arroyo? I saw it live on TV and yeah, he's pretty darn scary. I think just the look on his face scared Arroyo a bit. Now Arroyo is going to be thinking about what's gonna happen to him the next time he and Vogelsong face each other....for a long time!

    5. Yeah that video is scary enough. Arroyo should be scared. But Bacci is referring to the CSN interview video AFTER the game where Voggie is STILL pissed off. He even admits to it in the interview. I would be scared to put a mike within 10' of his face.

Glad Voggie is on our side.

  4. Where's Pato? Crawford finished second at SS for the All-Star squad. Must have been Shank's voting 2.5MM times.

    1. I had my bots working triple time.

Actually I agree with DrB, all-star game and balloting is a total joke. I'm just glad no Gints starting pitcher is starting the all-star game because I do believe in the curse of Atlee Hammerd'ker.

And I like that Vogelsong is pissed about the snub. Because you know Madison is as well, and you know Timmay wants to get back there as well. Zito? Well, lets not get too carried away here, somebody has to stay and make the avocado frittata.

    2. Shank, can your bots tell if Pato voted for Craw? Even once.

    3. If you take the injured players out of the mix, I think you can actually make a case that Crawford is a top 5 NL SS. I don't think that his second place finish is nearly as egregious as Belt's and it's really Huff and Sanchez who are the big giveaways that this was pure ballot stuffing.

  5. Aubrey Huff got 2,000,000 votes.

Freddy Sanchez finishes 4th at 2nd Base.

What an absolute farce All Star voting has become.

I used to love the All Star game. But there's no point in watching it any more. Revolving door pitching. Starters who don't deserve the nod. Even lowering standards and just considering it an exhibition, the lack of integrity in squad selection combined with the travesty of being home field designator for the WS makes it ridiculous.
