Sometimes the darkest hour is just before the dawn. I've seen teams, including the Giants, pick themselves up off the mat and come back stronger. If you are looking for rock bottom, today's game would be and awfully good bet. Barry Zito got bombed and the offense was, once again, almost non-existent. Key Lines:
Melky Cabrera- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .352. Melky has been in a mini-slump so today's game is encouraging that he still has something left in the tank.
Hunter Pence- 0 for 2, BB, SF. BA= .267. A little better than last night's performance, but still not exactly what you hope for when you trade 3 players to bolster your stretch run.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 3, 3B. BA= .238. A ray of hope for Belt?
Not gonna even bother to post Zito's line.
Chris Young(Mets)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.22. Yes THAT Chris Young! When he's healthy, Chris Young is a very good pitcher. He's rarely been healthy in his career.
With the loss, the Giants lead in the NL West slips to 0.5 games over the Dodgers and 2 games over the D'Backs. Both the Dodgers and D'Backs were idle on the day.
The Giants now hit the road to play the Rockies as Ryan Vogelsong faces ex-Giant Jonathan Sanchez.
Again, there is time to turn it around. The Giants are fortunate no team has grabbed the division by the throat, but time is starting to run short. Right now, the Giants do not look like a playoff contending team.

Zito had to pull a classic Zito move, with 2 out and nobody on, to boot! I was actually singing some praised for BPBZ today as well. We get to crunch time, we do not have to worry about him. But we do need 4-5 more starts where he keeps the ball down, pitches to contact and does NOT put ducks on the pond to get cashed.
ReplyDeleteThis team needs to get fired up. They started hot after the break, and they just hit some bad mojo. But just think - with a pen and a Franchise pitching to expectations, the Gints would be running away right now.
Pence will be fine. He is hitting the ball, he just missed a bit in the first 2 games. Melky snapped out of his mini slump. Scutaro has been solid, and when Pablo comes back the hot hand in the MI. The Riot needs some time off. And Pagan needs to decide what the rest of his year is about. Belt seems to be getting hot, I hope he gets a shot tomorrow against...
Big test. Johnny Sanchez is gonna be fired up. The Gints need to be patient, load up the pressure on him and cash in. Not the time for chasing balls out the zone.
Brass tacks, serious pennant race. Serious fun. Good team, they need to get tight with their defense, get that pitching square, and scrap out the runs.
i thought the dodger series was rock bottom
ReplyDeletei think sabean just needs to make a couple of waiver wire trades to really get this team going....right to the bottom
loux apologized for his outing...not sure why
as sanchez cannot throw strikes this year, i am predicting a 12k performance
It's probably less painful emotionally o say we are going down, this or that player is not going to make it, or our opponents are supermen.
ReplyDeleteSo while not EZ for me, I will say we take the game.
Giants are currently (August 3rd) 7 games over .500.
ReplyDeleteOn August 22, 2010, the Giants were 7 games over .500.
Don't break out the razors blades just yet.
As I said recently, the G's are an enigma. Can no longer count on Timmy, Zito and even Matt. Mad is 2nd best to Ryan right now, but things have a way of changing. We all know that slumps occur when most players struggle. And the old axiom of "it aint how hard you hit it, but where", is why The-Riot's average has been dropping lately. Hitting the ball hard is fraught with danger if you can't get sufficient loft on it. This has been a big concern all year, too many whiffs instead of jacks. We all remember how Pujols struggled early. He's now 22hr. 73 rbi's, .286 avg. If Pence is as good as reported, he too will start winning games with jacks. For Giants to make post season, pitching must keep them games, otherwise their lack of power will consign to the 2nd division. Too bad about Manny B. his bat speed couldn't match his foot speed. Ditto for Christian. Time for turn-around. Tonight would be a good time to start. The Giants are due to bust out, let's just hope their pitching can limit walks, jacks as well. Cam, Solana Beach.
ReplyDeleteGiants dismantle Rockies in spite of, not because of Pence. His only rbi's as a Giant, a sac fly and a force out. He's 1 for August, a measly single.@ 1 for 12 (.083) and his only hit with bases empty. I would characterize his contribution as non existent. Denver's thin air was a mixed blessing. It contributed to Pill/Posey Jacks, but after running the bases, the thin air caught up to Ryan V. The 4 runs dropped him to 3rd in era @2.38. Cam, Solana Beach.
