Down on the Farm: 8/12/2012

AAA  New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 4-2:

8 Grizzlies got 1 hit each including a 2B from Pegs.
Boof Bonser(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.92.

Remember Boof is only recently back from a full year's layoff.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels won a pitching duel over the Bowie Baysox 1-0 in 10 innings:

Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .300.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .237.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 7.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 2.20.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, W(7-3).  BA= 1.60.

Am I the only one here impressed by the season Juan Perez has had?  Chris Heston had been in a mini-slump.  Nagging injury?  He sure found his missing K pitch in this one.  Took a no-hitter into the 8'th inning to boot.  Brett Bochy has been a very busy young man this year.  10 decisions to go with 14 Saves.  Wow!

High A  Lancaster Jethawks edged the San Jose Giants 3-2:

Carter Jurica- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .302.
Pablo Sandoval(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .273.
Alex Burg(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .246.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's  ERA= 4.03.

Yeah, Pablo's ready.  I would think he'll be in the Giants lineup tonight against the Nats although it might be wise to wait for a RHP to bring him back against.

Low A  The SAL was idle.

Short Season   Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 10-9:

Kentrell Hill(LF)- 2 for 4, BB, Assist(home).  BA= .292.
Stephen Branca(SS)- 2 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .318.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .316.
Joseph Rapp(1B)- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(8), BB.  BA= .275.
Rafael Rodriguez(DH)- 2 for 4.  BA= .270.
Ryan Jones(2B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .213.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(8).  ERA= 1.96.

Nice game to pad the stat lines, unless you are a pitcher.  Rapp looks like a ferocious hitter, at least from his box score lines.

Rookie AZL  Rangers crushed the Giants 9-1:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 2 for 5, 2 SB(18).  BA= .241.
Jonathan Jones(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .308.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .278.
Joey Gallo(DH, Rangers)- 4 for 5, HR(17!).  BA= .300.

Jonathan Jones seems like he might be a hitter and I really like what Shilo McCall has done in his pro debut.  LOL Joey Gallo!  Not sure what it says when you are a DH in rookie ball, but gotta love those offensive numbers.  At least he's in an organization that plays in a DH league at the MLB level.

DSL  Giants were idle as usual on Sundays.

  2. Has Jurrica revived his prospecthood?

  3. Whom can we count on when the roster expands?

    1. Anybody called up will have to either already be on the 40 man roster or added to it. I'm not sure if there are any current open slots on the 40 man.

  4. I think Jurica has put himself back on the prospect map. He's hitting slightly under .300 at the same level and same age Gary Brown played at last year, and Brown is, by most accounts, very high among the Giants top prospects.

    1. I don't disagree about Jurica resurrecting his prospect status, but I would caution about being too rigid in comparing stats/levels/ages.

There is a big difference in experience between Jurica now and Brown last year. Brown plays superior defense at a premium position and has a lot more speed. The two situations are not directly comparable.

  5. How much do you think Juan Perez's numbers this year are inflated by this being his second year in the Eastern League?

    1. Some. Can't really quantify it, but you have to take it into account. It isn't just repeating AA either. Perez has been in he organization seemingly forever. On the other hand, Perez has some tools and I think his performance this year in AA keeps his prospect status alive to fight another day. I seem potential for him to be a 4'th OF for somebody in the future.
