AA Bowie Baysox edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

BTW, Manny Machado was promoted from Bowie all the way to the MLB Baltimore Orioles. He was hitting just .266 with 11 HR's in 400 AB's for Bowie. He hit 2 dingers in his first MLB game!
High A Lancaster Jethawks defeated the San Jose Giants 7-3:
Pablo Sandoval(3B)- 0 for 2. BA= .214.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(14). BA= .246.
Andrew Susac(C)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .236.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Nick Tropeano(RHP, Jethawks)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.11.
The big news here is Sandoval and Hembree beginning rehab assignments. Tropeano is pitcher I really liked before the 2011 draft. He's put up excellent K and BB ratios at 2 levels. A 4.11 ERA is good for a pitcher whose home park is Lancaster.
Low A Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Delmarva Shorebirds 7-0:
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(5). BA= .318.
Jose Flores(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .252.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .242.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 13/3. ERA= 4.41
Shawn Payne continues to rake SAL pitching. A dominant start for Mejia. He has 22 K's against just 2 BB's in his last 4 starts covering 27.2 IP.
Short Season Spokane Indians topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 9-8:
Brennan Metzger(LF)- 1 for 4, HR(1), HBP, SB(4). BA= .246.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .302.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .339.
Ian Gardeck(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.57.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.82.
I guess Metzger was just a fill-in for San Jose. He went 4 for 10 with a 2B and HR while there. Williamson continues to rake the NWL. The Giants continue to be conservative with Stratton.
Rookie AZL Giants edged the Indians 6-5 in 11 innings:
Shayne Houck(3B-1B)- 3 for 5. BA= .290.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB. BA= .267.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.
I was unimpressed by the video I saw of McCall when he was drafted but I've been more than happy with the performance we've seen in his pro debut. He has a .373 OBP and a decent IsoP to go with his .267 BA. Good to see Agosta pitching well even if it's at too low a level.
DSL Giants crushed the D'Backs/Reds 10-1:
Julio Pena(CF)- 3 for 4, 2 HR(8). BA= .202.
Noel Diaz(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.12.

I went to the SJ Giants game, so I'm going to put in my two cents.
ReplyDeleteMy seats were right among the talent scouts for both teams, so I picked up some very interesting tidbits, mainly about Andrew Susac, but with some nice Adam Duvall, Heath Hembree, and Stephen Harrold sprinkled in too.
Susac: One of his hits was a seeing-eye through the 1st/2nd base hole. The double being pulled down the leftfield line. He also laid down an amazing bunt down the third base line. The scouts were talking about the Giants fascination with catchers who could hit for power (Posey, Susac, Sanchez) and draw walks (Posey, Susac), but they left something to be desired on defense. Their main point on that was talking about Susac. In no uncertain terms they called him a (I apologize in advance if there is a site decourum rule) "dipshit" at calling games, and they also said he has "hands like bricks" behind the plate. Sort of weird since I think we all thought he was a plus defender behind the plate. In happier Susac news, I clocked him at 1.93 to 2nd, showing off his rocket arm.
Adam Duvall: At one point during the game, the scout from Lancaster leaned over to the San Jose scouts and asked how Duvall was doing on defense this year. He said "really good, he's knocking everything down, and has a cannon" kinda promising!
Stephen Harrold: Harrold gave up both inherited runners in the sixth, and one of the San Jose scouts said "at one point he has to tell Skeels about this, because it's becoming everytime now." An injury?
Heath Hembree: Hembree was coming out, hitting 90-92 on the gun with no movement on his breaking stuff. What the scouts said really surprised me. They said "he only had that one good year, last year, he was hitting 95-98 on the gun, but now he's hitting 92-95. He may get to the big leagues, but I don't think he'll be that good." WOW!
My thoughts on the game
They were spraying line drives on Snodgrass all game, he's lucky he didn't give up ten runs. The only thing Panik did was turn a nice double play showing good footwork and a nice arm. Burg showed a CANNON in right three times, and I think he could stick in the outfield. His error could have been prevented by not "hot-dogging" as he just tried to non-chalantly catch it. Ricky let a catchable ball bounce off his glove, but he didn't get an error. His Homerun was an opposite field shot to the deepest part of left-center.

I've seen Duvall in 3 games this year and I have to say he did not look good on D in those games. Dude can put a charge in the ball though.
DeleteI do think Susac might be struggling to learn the mental aspects of catching in the pros. Remember when there was concern about Buster calling pitches? In college, the coaches call the pitches from the dugout. At one game I attended, something funky happened out on the field involving Susac, but I couldn't tell exactly what the problem was. I then saw Skeels have an extended, animated conversation with him on the dugout steps that looked like it was a lot more than "attaboy." Susac can learn the mental aspects of catching if he has the tools.
Are you sure those were scouts or SP's on their off day charting pitches? I've sat in front of the RC Quakes pitch charters last year and they had some very catty remarks about Gary Brown. I might take some of those comments with a grain of salt.
i wonder why the Giants have scouts doing pro coverage on our own organization? Isn't that Skeel's job? Same with the Astro's, why would they have their scouts doing their own game?

DeleteMy understanding is that minor league managers send evaluations of every player to the Giants front office after every game. In addition, teams do send scouts to get a different perspective.
In the minors, SP's spend their off days sitting in the stands charting pitches. There are usually 2-3 of them. One holds the radar gun and calls out velocities and the other one keeps the chart. There might be a third one there just for the camaraderie or a third pair of eyes.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the correction. That fan might want to hang onto those HR balls off Machado. You never know. He could have a HOF career and the fan can say he caught his first 2 HR's!
