Down on the Farm: 8/26/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies downed the Reno Aces 6-3:

Brock Bond(3B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .342.
Xavier Nady(LF)- 3 for 4, 2 HR(6).  BA= .273.
Todd Linden(RF)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .279.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.44.
Guillermo Mota(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.26.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.14.

I think it's time to give Nady a callup and see what he can do in LF.  It's not like the guys they have out there now are setting the world on fire.

AA  Altoona Curve blasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-0:

Chris Gloor(LHP)- 3.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.89.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.64.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.98.
Jameson Taillon(RHP, Curve)- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Taillon is a top prospect for the Pirates, a former first round draft pick.  He's had 2 starts since his promotion to AA where he has 13 K's against 0 BB in 11 IP.

High A  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes out hit the San Jose Giants 10-7:

Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .260.
Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .235.
Chris Lofton(DH)- 2 for 3, BB, SB(22).  BA= .249.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 4, 2 E(28).  BA= .262.
Brad Penny(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Ricky hitting .341 over his last 10 games. He definitely seems to thrive on home cooking.

Low A  Greensboro Grasshoppers edged the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:

Shawn Payne(DH)- 2 for 4.  BA= .314.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 13/3.  ERA= 2.54.

I think Blackburn might have my nomination for organizational player of the year.

Short Season  Spokane Indians pounded the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 10-4:

Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .324.
Stephen Yarrow(PH-2B)- 2 for 2, 2B.  BA= .201.
Charles Jones(CF)- 1 for 3, HBP, SB(4).  BA= .235.

Rookie AZL  Giants topped the D'Backs 5-4:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 1 for 1, BB, HBP, SF, SB(28).  BA= .253.
Roger Kieschnick(DH)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.38.
Ariel Hernandez(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.40.
Franklin Noel(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.97.

Roger K starts his rehab.  I would think he would be a prime candidate for the AFL to get him more AB's after all the time he missed.

DSL  The DSL was idle.

  1. Good to see Ricky finish strong. It just seems better batting over .260 than to be in the .250s, at the end of the season.

What are their numbers in the second half, for Panik, Susac and Ricky? It would seem, with this being their first year, with all the getting used to the pace, speed and mental aspect of professional baseball, and in the case of Susac, maybe even his hand injury recovery being a factor, it's more appropriate to look at their second half numbers.

    1. Panik has hit pretty well since April. Ricky slumped pretty badly end of July early August. He's only picked it back up the last 10 games or so.

I would say Panik is in good shape going forward. I was hoping for better seasons from Susac and Ricky but not going to write them off as this was their first pro experience. We'll see where they get assigned next year and how they produce.

    2. Speaking of Blackburn, did you get a chance to see Sickels' report on Blackburn earlier today? Looks like Blackburn's pitching within the last month impressed Sickels enough to increase his grade from a C+ to a B since his review of The Giants Top 20 preseason-prospects- http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/8/27/3271933/minor-league-prospect-clayton-blackburn-rhp-san-francisco-giants-scouting-report

    3. I saw that. Very nice writeup by Sickels on Blackburn. He seems to think Blackburn could make it all the way to AA next year.

  2. What's your opinion on Mac Williamson? I remember in one of your previous posts, you mentioned how he had good power but you were iffy on how he couldn't break a .300 BA in college ball. His minor league stats seem pretty good. Is the northwest league pretty hitter friendly? Or is Mac tearing up that league and is a good candidate to be promoted from short-season class A to regular class A next year??

    1. The NWL tends to be a hitter's league and it's a small sample size. Too early to tell on Williamson. Remember Panik tore up the NWL last year. While Panik recovered from a terrible April to post a solid season in the Cal League, he hasn't come close to NWL. The early returns on Williamson are encouraging though and much better than if he was struggling at the same level.
