Down on the Farm: 8/15/2012

AAA  Oklahoma City Redhawks dominated the Fresno Grizzlies 7-1:

Emmanuel Burriss(2B)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .395.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .301.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.08.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.35.

AA  New Britain Rock Cats edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3 in 10 innings:

Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .246.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .219.
Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 12/5. ERA= 3.41.

Justin Fitzgerald seems like a sleeper to me.  Big body, Low 90's, gets ground balls.  Could be a Joe Blanton #4 or 5 starter.

High A  San Jose Giants pounded the Bakersfield Blaze 9-1:

Carter Jurica(2B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .308.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 4 for 5, HR(15).  BA= .254.
Jarrett Parker(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(13), BB.  BA= .249.
Jarrad Page(RF)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(6).  BA= .174.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 4.43.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Nice game for Ricky.  Hopefully he's emerged from his slump and can finish the season on an up note.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Lakewood Blueclaws 3-1:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 2, BB.  BA= .196.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/2.  BA= 2.34.
Chris Marlowe(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 4.04.

Seems like a mature game from Crick.  Marlowe is going to get some Save chances?

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes exploded over the Boise Hawks 13-5:

Brennan Metzger(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB, SB(5). BA= .243.
Joseph Rapp(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(9), BB.  BA= .269.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 4, 2 HR(6), BB.  BA= .346.
Stephen Yarrow(3B-SS)- 2 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .188.
Andrew Cain(RF)- 4 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .243.
Ryan Jones(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .230.
Chris Stratton(RHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.65.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 1.57.

Too much good stuff in this game!  Gotta love what we've seen of Williamson so far.  Stratton's line is a wonderful sight.  McVay is looking great so far.

Rookie AZL  Giants topped the Reds 9-5:

Jonathan Jones(1B)- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .302.
Alberto Robles(2B)- 3 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .320.
Randy Ortiz(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, SB(20).  BA= .250.
Tyler Hollick(CF)- 0 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB(14).  BA= .284.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.00.

Jones is looking like a hitting prospect.  A bit of a downer start for Agosta but I imagine both he and Stratton are just getting their work in.

DSL  Pirates blanked the Giants 3-0:

Keury Mella(RHP)- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.52.
Luis Castillo(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.80.

  1. Nice game from Stratton taking the bump finally! Did I mention that I like Mac?

  2. Been following the blog for about a month now and love it. Life long Yankee fan of 42 years but I now have a rooting interest in the Giants farm system. Love the blog, it's the first thing I check when I wake up here on the east coast. Been following the NWL mostly on here because my nephew plays for SK. I was wondering what the difference is in high or low A pitching versus what the kids see in short season. I've seen stats from some of the guys on SK that didn't fair so well in Augusta. Is there really that large of a gap in the pitching between those levels?

  3. Burris gets my player of the game. He was actually driving the ball pretty well a day after I was wearing him out as a weak slap hitter. Matt Downs played 1B and looked good there and had a big hit in the middle of the game to win my POD for the Redhawks.

I was really looking forward to seeing Petit more than any other Fresno starter and he didn't disappiont until he ran out of gas in the 7th inning. He only threw 89-91 but looked like he moved the ball around the zone pretty good and his off speed pitches worked well until the 7th.

Noonan made an error on a easy backhander in the hole and his arm still looks sort of below average to me. He has a nice little left handed swing. He is a second baseman IMO.

Peguero is the real-deal. His contact skills look pretty good to me and he is fast. He ran down a pop-up about 60 feet behind the first base bag catching the ball on the dead-run with a basket catch that even excited my wife who attended the game with me.

Runzler came in throwing hard but couldn't get his 96 MPH fast ball past Matt Downs. He threw numerous fastballs that hit 94-95-96 on the stadim gun, however, his fastball has ZERO movement that even the wife commented on as "strait as an arrow". He threw a few off speed pitches 78-81 but they were nothing special.

Nady is horrible. Slow in the field, no arm, flailing at pitches in the dirt, please, please don't bring him to SF.

Jackson Williams is a very good defensive catcher with an above average arm. I met his dad, Dave Williams, at the game and asked him if he would mind an amature interview for my blog, A Giant Obsession, and a blog called, When the Giants Come to Town, he said sure and I will post it as soon as I can.

I also have a little insight about testosterone. It is not my specialty, I am a Chiropractor, but the clinic I work in is large multi-disiplinary clinic that has MD's, DC's, as well as physician assistants, a physical therapist and a nurse practitioner. The clinic is basically split in half with my side treating chiropractic, workman's comp, and auto injury patients. The other side of the clinic does physician assisted wieght loss and Bio-identical Hormone replacement. I am pretty busy today but want to add something about the baseball levels and BHRT v. synthetic hormone replacement.

  4. I kinda wish Burriss would just struggle in AAA. It's becoming apparent that he's going to be merely a 4A guy, but any success he has in AAA will translate into more of a chance that he'll be brought back up to the big club to hit weak grounders and stand at home plate while his pop ups are caught.

  5. Do you think we will still offer Melky a qualifying offer?

    1. I sure hope so, that way we either get him for another year, or we get draft picks

    2. No way will they offer him the qualifying offer of 13 million nobody else will come close to offering anything like that. He'll probably get 1 year offers worth around 2 to 3 million

    3. Somebody is going to pay Melky this offseason. If I was in Sabes position, I'd try to sign him to an under-market 3 year deal. Failing that, I would absolutely still make a qualifying offer.

Look at what Ryan Braun is doing this year.

  6. Testosterone has a normal range between 300-1100 in most adult males. As you age the number goes lower as your body quits producing T as it did when you were in your teens and 20's. It is common for the T level to drop under 300 when men hit their late 30's to mid 40's.

Major league baseball tests not for the amount of T in the body but for a ratio of Testosterone to epitestosterone, two naturally occuring hormones in the body. This 4/1 ratio that the MLB is testing for can be easily manipulated if you know what you are doing and are not using synthetic hormones. If there is to much Testosterone in the body it throws the ratio out of whack and you can get a ratio of 11/1 or more as did some athletes in the past.

At our clinic and most clinics that do BHRT (bio-identical hormone replacement) we attempt to raise the T level to as close to 1000 as we can no matter the age of the male patient. This is close to the top of the normal spectrum and provides the patient with the highest benefit to maintain muscle mass, bone composition and vascular health as they age.

Bio-identical hormones are much different from synthetic hormones in that bio-identical hormones are metabolized, stored, and converted into other hormones naturally.

There are much less side effects to BHRT therapy because the hormones are natural and our bodies metabolize bioidentical hormones the way it's designed to. Synthetic hormones can often be quite strong and produce unbearable side effects. Bioidentical hormones, sometimes referred to as natural hormones, are used to treat menopause symptoms, perimenopause, and post-menopause.

Bioidentical hormones are those that are molecularly identical to the hormones that are produced in the body. These hormones are chemicals that are derived from sources of yam or soybean. Steroids and hormones are taken from animals and plants then altered to be identical in molecular structure.

The steroids and hormones are then formed as a cream, oral, suppository or injections so the body can absorb them quickly.

The 4/1 ratio that the MLB is testing for gets out of whack when there is to much Testosterone in the body wheather synthetic or from BHRT sources. This ratio can get out of balance and even get to a ratio of 11/1 or more as it has been found in some athletes in the past.

Balco created a patch of epitestosterone to go with the T so the ratio stayed in order. Realy the MLB and Olympic tests are a jokes because you can still manipulate the ratio if you are smart enough to use a BHRT testosterone and use the epi patch to keep the ratio within limits. They should be measuring the testosterone level in the body and if it is over 1200 then they would know something is going on.

    1. Thanks for sharing that info with us. It's completely outside my area of expertise, so I have nothing further to contribute.

    3. Anon, take that crap to MCC. (Where, BTW, you'll be laughed out of the building.)

RBJ, interesting. Nice to have a little background to the Melky situation.

    4. That was more on a Giants Message Board level. I'll have to say, the humor on MCC, while tiresome most of the time is much more sophisticated than that.

    5. That's what I meant, Doc. They'd be laughing at the guy, not with him.

They keep it light, to say the least at MCC. But, it's almost always fueled by decent wit.
