Down on the Farm: 8/28/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Reno Aces 4-3 in 12 innings:

Brett Pill(1B)- 3 for 6, 2B, 2 HR(11).  BA= .279.
Xavier Nady(LF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .280.
Boof Bonser(RHP)- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .111.
Boof Bonser(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.34.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.00.
Trevor Bauer(RHP, Aces)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.85.

Huge game for Pill.  Nady keeps hitting.

AA  Harrisburg Senators edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1:

Chris Heston(RHP)- 7.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.07.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Lake Elsinore Storm 7-4:

Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .294.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 3 for 5, 2 3B.  BA= .263.
Dan Burkhart(C)- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(1).  BA= .291.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.92.
Drew Bowlin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.18.

Panik continues his drive to .300.  The SB for Burkhart must have been a fluke.  Dude is definitely not a basestealer.  Very typical husky catcher build.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets pounded the Rome Braves 10-2:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(6), 3 BB, 2 SB(52).  BA= .314.
Brett Krill(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 HBP.   BA= .295.
Devin Harris(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(7), 3 BB.  BA= .252.
Garrett Buechele(1B)- 3 for 6.  BA= .262.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.56.

What a season for Payne!  I just wish the Giants had given him a chance to show what he can do at a higher level.  Nice season for Krill too.  CF?

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Tri-City Dust Devils 4-3:

Kentrell Hill(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .279.
Charles Jones(CF)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(6).  BA= .244.
Matthew Graham(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.28.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.23.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(13).  ERA= 1.57.

Chuckie Jones had a big game.  He's hitting .296/.424/.593 over his last 10 games.  He hit .212 in June, .240 in July and .273 in August.  He just turned 20 yo the end of July.  I have cautious high hopes for Chuckie.  Kentrell Hill is a guy who I think has set himself up well for next season.  I'm guessing he'll be in Augusta.  McVay continues to impress.

Rookie AZL  Giants DNP.

DSL  It looks like the DSL regular season is over with the Giants missing the playoffs for the first time in several years.  They finished 2'nd in the Boca Chica South division 7 games behind the Yankees1.  Giants final record was 42-28 with a .600 winning percentage.  Not too shabby!  Angel Villalona was the big story for the DSL Giants but they had several players who I think we'll see in the states next year.

A couple of interesting trivia notes from BA:  1.  Former Giants farmhand Brian Buscher managed the top team in the Coastal Plain Summer League.  2.  Marcus Stroman, first round draft pick by Toronto, suspended 50 games testing positive for an amphetamine.

  1. How has Hembree done since returning?

Yeah, that is curious about Payne, he had a pretty nice season, and it was not like there was anyone in San Jose blocking him. Then again, could this be a reaction to the Giants recent predilection to push players up the ladder faster, and recently noting that maybe they pushed them up too fast? However, Payne is pretty old for the Sally, he needed to do what he did in AA for him to be a good prospect.

And maybe that is it: he did nicely but did not dominate, so the Giants left him there to build and keep his confidence as he climbs the ladder one a year. He was only 24th in OPS, though 7th in OBP. He is like the pitchers who lack stuff but compile great ERAs in the lower minors: they need to prove themselves, one level at a time, then advance. Why rush him and risk him losing confidence should he struggle at the next level.

Chuckie! Glad he is finally starting to figure some things out. I also am cautiously optimistic.

Wow, McVay looks like the steal from the back of the draft right now, right?

Thanks for the trivia! I noticed another Giants farmhand managing in the minors somewhere recently, wish I could share that, maybe someone remembers. And I was shocked too by Stroman.

How does that work, if he gets caught again when he's in the majors, does he get a 50 or does this push him to 100 games?
