Down on the Farm: 8/11/2012

AAA  New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3:

Brock Bond(2B)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .337.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K's.  ERA= 6.05.
Jean Machi(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.96.

AA  Bowie Baysox beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-4:

Mark Minicozzi(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .307.
Johnny Monell(C)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .246.
Jacob Dunnington(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.04.

Monell is hitting .393 over his last 10 games.  He hit .304 in July and is hitting .417 so far in August.  Anyone else puzzled by how the Giants are developing Jacob Dunnington, if that's what you can call it?

High A  San Jose Giants edged the Lancaster Jethawks 3-2:

Carter Jurica(2B)- 3 for 5.  BA= .299.
Adam Duvall(DH)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .263.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

Low A  Delmarva Shorebirds pounded the Augusta Greenjackets 9-4:

Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .319.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .281.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.38.

Arnold has had his ups and downs this season.  It's been mostly down lately as he has a 6.10 ERA over his last 10 games. His K rate is decent and his GO/AO of 1.65 shows a strong GB tendency, but with 41 BB's in 51.1 IP, it's amazing his ERA isn't even higher.  He's only 20 yo, so he has time to figure it out.

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-1:

Stephen Branca(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .313.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 5.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.62.

Rookie AZL  Mariners downed the Giants 8-7:

John Polonius(SS)- 2 for 5.  BA= .338.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .279.
Leonardo Rojas(C)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .237.
Cristian Paulino(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 SB(9).  BA= .245.
Andrew Leenhouts(LHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

McCall came out of the game for a PR.  Hope he isn't hurt.

DSL  Giants outlasted the D'Backs/Reds 5-3 in 11 innings:

Julio Pena(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .207.
Carlos Valdez(LF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .232.
Luis Castillo(RHP)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.12.

  1. I think they are doing okay with developing Dunnington. I think he was hurt to start the season and they eased him back in Augusta before sending him to Richmond where he would have started had no injury problems.
I see him as a Edlefsen type guy and I would expect him to start next season in Fresno. If he keeps dominating there then a callup is not out of the question.

  2. Arnold is an interesting cat. Young, struggles with control, but has some icewater in his veins. The number of walks have to come way down, but his ERA should be a couple digits higher. Hard to tell what the Gints are doing with him. I was hoping they'd let him start a bit, but there is a lot of competition there in Augusta. The best aspect for him is he doesn't get rattled, and doesn't give up a lot of hits. The walks have to get take care of though. Maybe he has some future as a set up guy if they don't air him out.

  3. Just an interesting side note, I didn't know the San Jose Giant Jarrod Page and the former Kansas City Chief Jarrod Page were one in the same

    1. Page looks like a football player too. Terrific athlete. Just needs to hit.

    2. Page has no arm. I repeat: absolutely NO arm. He'll never reach higher than Double-A.

  5. What's wrong with how Dunnington is being developed? He dominated Class-A last season before injuring his shoulder right before the playoffs. He rehabbed in Augusta and is now in Richmond where he should be.
