Game Wrap 8/13/2012: Nationals Giants

Ryan Vogelsong's start suffered death by BABlP in the 3'rd inning as the Nationals put ball after ball in play with each one finding its way between fielders, bouncing off fielders.  The inning even included a safe call by the first base ump that was admittedly a close play, but clearly an out on TV replay.  That one got Bruce Bochy ejected and it was all downhill from there.  In short, everything that could go wrong in the game did go wrong.  We fans can just be thankful it does not count any more in the standings than if they lost 3-2 or by some other 1 run difference.  Key Lines:

Brandon Crawford(PH)- 1 for 1, HR(4).  BA= .243.  Crawford's BA has been inching up hitting .323 over his last 10 games, and this hit was a dinger.

Ryan Vogelsong- 2.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.72.  His line suggests he got BABIPed and that's what it looked like on the field to:  Seeing eye grounders, a couple of booted balls by fielders, a bad call by the first base ump.  It all added up to opening the floodgates.  It looked like Vogey took it pretty hard.  Hopefully that was just his game face and he'll realize that he actually pitched pretty well and go get 'em next game.

Brad Penny- 2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.86.   If you get BABIPed in 1 game that's one thing.  If you are getting BABIPed every game, well, that's another.  If you throw batting practice pitches up there, yeah, they are gonna get hit, hard.  If Sabes can find a RH version of Mijares out there, he should not let keeping Brad Penny on the roster stand in his way.

The Dodgers edged the Pirates 5-4 to move back into a tie with the Giants for first place in the NL West.  The idle D'Backs pull up to 4.5 games out.

Madison Bumgarner takes the mound facing Jordan Zimmermann in Game 2 of the series with the Nats.

  1. 2 things happened this week that i have never seen

petaluma is going to the little league ws on a walk off appeal and an inning like that

never have i seen a pitcher do his job by getting ground balls and get blown out...sans a ton of errors...although i think the scorer goofed and at least 2 of the if hits shouldve been ruled e's

  2. Vogelsong mentioned it was too bad since he had his stuff early on in the game, and he was right - great strikeouts, bad luck on a walk (and on the non-strikeout to Zimmerman early on), and just shockingly poor defense from 2B, 3B and SS.

For some reason during the game I thought Penny had been in there for-eever and had gone 3-4 innings, but I guess that was because he allowed 9 baserunners (well, one of them was a home run).

  3. 16-0 over the Cards last week = 14-2 yesterday. Baseball over 162 games can be brutal. Drinak a cold one or two, go get'em tomorrow guys.

  4. We're at 46 games to go, we got identical record with them Bums, its dark and we're wearing sunglasses... Hit it!

We have to execute the defense and get the good pitching. And tighten up at home. Good squad, needs to get hot and then stay hot. So streaky this year, it just seems like every time some serious momentum is coming, they take a day off.

This is shaping up to be a classic race. I would like to see Brad Penny and his BP gone, and one power threat off the bench would be nice but that might not be happening. Panda, please be hot right away. Go get em Maddy!
