Down on the Farm: 06-26-2010

Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Las Vegas 51's 7-1:

Tyler Graham- 2 for 5, 2B, 2 SB(16). BA= .379.
Brett Pill- 1 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .302.
Ryan Rohlinger- 2 for 3, HR(3), BB. BA= .344.
Eugenio Velez- 2 for 4, 2B, HBP, SB(19). BA= .309.
Matt Yourkin- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA- 4.14.

Tyler Graham is showing some surprising resilience in his performance level. If Yourkin puts together a string of games like this, he could get a MLB chance.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Erie Seawolves 6-3 in 11 innnigs:

Darren Ford- 2 for 6, SB(25). BA= .244.
Brandon Crawford- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .251.
Thomas Neal- 3 for 5, 3 HR(7), BB. BA= .279.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5. BA= .249.
Skyler Stromsmoe- 2 for 4, 2B, S. BA= .286.
Clayton Tanner- 7.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 14/6. ERA= 3.46.
Rafael Cova- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(14). ERA= 1.23.

Huge game for Neal, but good to see several of the lads get multiple hits. According to the milb.com article, Neal got a tip from teammate/pitcher Tony Pena that helped him draw a bead on the ball. After his K in the first inning, he asked Pena how he missed the ball. Pena told him that he was swinging under the pitch. He got the 3 dingers after making an adjustment. Tanner got thrown out of the game in the 8'th for arguing a balk call.

High A Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 5-4 in 10 innings:

Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .263.
Brandon Belt- 1 for 5, HR(10). BA= .386.
Charlie Culberson- 3 for 4. BA= .325.
Drew Biery- 2 for 3, HR(7), BB. BA= .281.
Eric Surkamp- 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.69.
Ben Wilshire- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.60.

Adrianza is hitting .324 over his last 10 games. Culberson has been hot for quite awhile, but is hitting .475 over his last 10 games.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-3:

Ryan Cavan- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(4). BA= .261.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 4. BA= .217.
Andy Reichard- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.18.

Two 2-hit games in a row for Joseph.

Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Tri-City Dust Devils 4-2:

Jose Medina- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .333.
Cameron Lamb- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Seth Rosin- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Medina's 3 run dinger was the big blow of the game. I think Cameron Lamb has a fairly high ceiling. I see a rapid rise through the system for Seth Rosin who pitched much better in college than his W-L or ERA would indicate.

Rookie AZL Giants were idle.

DSL GIants blanked the Yankees 4-0:

Christian Paulino- 2 for 3, SF, SB(10). BA= .259.
Luis Angeles- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.71.
Yeini Martinez- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.70.

Angeles is 20 yo, but haven't seen his name in prior DSL years. Martinez is 19 yo with nice size at 6'3", 186 lbs.

  1. OK, it is after the ASG, so what is Belt doing still in SJ??

I know it is only one game, but this game has put Neal's power numbers near respectability. He has already been killing the ball for about a month or so now. He may be ready for a cup of coffee and may have a real shot for making team out of camp next year...

  2. Edit...

I did not mean Neal is ready for SF now. I meant that maybe this season...

  3. I would be happy if Neal lit it up for the rest of the season, got a Sept. callup and competed for the LF job next spring. I'm guessing the Giants will want him to spend some time at AAA next season though. I just think this guy is for real as a hitter, though.

  4. Yeah, what is happening with Belt? My only thought may be that they might want to bypass AA since all our better hitters in the system went there and have struggled this season so far. So keep him in SJ rest of this season then promote to AAA next season.

  5. But Sabes does not respect AAA, so I am not sure that would bake sense (in his head).

  6. I'm generally against our hitters skipping AA because it is more of a challenging hitting environment than the PCL. Buster Posey skipped AA and Pablo Sandoval only made a brief stop there, so what do I know?
