Game Wrap 06-25-2010: Giants 5 Red Sox 4

Brian Wilson caused another run of heart attack victims on emergency rooms and a few emergency changes of underwear, but he and the Giants hung onto a win over the Beasts from the East. What a start to the 3 game interleague series! Key lines:

Juan Uribe- 2 for 4, HR(12). BA= .273. Uribe had been slumping a bit, but came up big tonight as the cleanup hitter getting the Giants' only XBH.

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 4. BA= .276. Sandoval batting 5'th helped out in the middle of the order as the top 3 hitters didn't get on base much.

Buster Posey- 3 for 4. BA= .321. Great night for Buster to bust out of his mini-slump.

Jonathan Sanchez- 2 for 2. BA= .174. Sanchez helped himself out with an RBI. THat was the difference in the game right there. .174 is a pretty good BA for a pitcher.

Jonathan Sanchez- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.03. This game appeared to be over early when Durty gave up 3 runs in the first inning. To his credit, he hung in there and went the next 4.1 innings holding the BoSox scoreless and allowing the Giants offense to get him back into the game.

Santiago Casilla- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.73.

Brian Wilson- 1.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, Save(21). ERA= 2.25. Wilson certainly has his own style of doing things. Gotta give the guy a huge amount of credit for being able and willing to come in before the 9'th inning, but then he has to make Giants fans drop a load while his does another tightrope act. Tonight it was allowing the 'Sox within 1 run then loading the bases before getting that final out. I have to confess I couldn't even watch the last batter. I went looking up minor league boxscores then came back to check out the ending. Fortunately, it was a happy one!

With the W, the Giants move to 40-32, but stayed 2.5 games behind NL West leading San Diego Padres who shut out Florida behind Clayton Richard 3-0. The Dodgers lost to CC Sabathia and the Yankees 2-1 to fall 4 games behind the Pads. Colorado is leading late in their game vs the Angels at 4.5 games behind pending the final outcome. The D'Backs' Edwin Jackson allowed 8 walks to the Tampa Bay Rays, but no hits to win 1-0. That keeps Arizona 13.5 games off the Padres' pace.

The Giants send Joey Martinez to the mound to face the mighty Red Sox tomorrow then Tim Lincecum goes on Sunday giving the Giants a reasonable chance to win the series.

  2. Thanks for reading!!

As I will mention in the Down on the Farm post, Madison Bumgarner was a last minute scratch from the Fresno game last night. I should have tumbled to what was up, but was very tired. He's starting today against the BoSox, not Joe Martinez!!

  4. I agree with you, Bacci.

It's getting hard to see Rowand ever being even as good as just about any replacement you name, at least in SF. The Giants have eaten contracts before, but I'm not sure it's ever been for more than 1 season. At this point, it's lost money no matter how you cut it. If he's worse than any replacement, it's money lost anyway. Might as well make the team better by eating the contract.

I knew when they signed him that his numbers would take a big hit playing on the west coast vs Philly, but I've been surprised at just how relentlessly bad he's been. When you have a guy who's been around as long as Gamer consistently swinging at pitches 3 feet outside, it's pretty darn hard to imagine it getting better with more experience.

If Posey proves he can catch and continue to hit, I'd love to see an OF of Torres, Burrell and Huff with Sandoval moving to 1B, Uribe to 3B and with Rent and Freddy up the middle. Trade some prospects for Cliff Lee and I think the Giants make a run with that.
