Game Wrap 06-10-2010: Reds 7 Giants 6

The Giants offense did their job today, but the pitching was plagued by injury and ineffectiveness and the Giants lost a game they probably should have won ending up with a split of the 4 game series with the Cincinnati Reds. Key lines:

Andres Torres- 1 for 3, 2 BB, S. BA= .296 OBP= .390. You can't ask for much more from a leadoff hitter. On base 3 times, his teammates failed to get him home.

Aubrey Huff- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(8). BA= .300 OBP= .398. OPS= .893. Huff has been a tremendous asset and seems to be just getting warmed up!

Juan Uribe- 1 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .279. The Giants drew 8 BB's today. Combined with 13 hits, they should have scored more runs.

Buster Posey- 2 for 5. BA= .444. Posey has multiple hits in 7 of his 12 games.

Bengie Molina- 2 for 4. BA= .255

Aaron Rowand- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB. BA= .227. Hopefully this is the start of better hitting from both Bengie and Gamer.

Todd Wellemeyer- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Apparently Wellemeyer had some good stuff going before he pulled his quad. Looks like he'll be on the shelf for awhile. Look for Joe Martinez to get the first shot at his #5 starter role.

Denny Bautista- 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 K. ERA= 3.52. Yesterday it was Romo and Affeldt. Today it was Bautista and Mota. The bullpen has hit another rough patch.

Guillermo Mota- 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Runzler and Wilson weren't available?

Santiago Casilla- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 H, 3 K's. ERA= 1.17. Casilla looks like a major contributor, but he can't do it all. I would look for him to be moving into the regular setup role.

The loss dropped the GIants 3.5 games behind the idle Dodgers and 2.5 games behind the Pads who split a DH with the Mets. Colorado dropped to 6 games off the Dodgers pace with a 5-4 loss to Houston. Arizona went 12.5 games behind the lead with a 11-7 loss to ATL.

The Giants come home for the weekend to try to avenge the sweep the A's laid on them in Oakland a couple of weeks ago. The Giants will throw their top 3 starters at the A's, but will have to score some runs this time.

  1. why would you think runzler and wilson weren't available? of course sometimes wilson pitches two innings, but it is certainly not the standard, so bochy was waiting to use him in the ninth. and it is not even close as to who has pitched better this year between runzler and mota, so that would be silly to wonder why he wouldn't use runzler over mota. or weak ass second guessing.

  2. I don't think it's too outrageous to think that if you are up by two runs in the bottom of the 8'th, and if you lose the lead you will be up against the other team's closer in the top of the 9'th, and if your guy just doesn't have it, you might want to give the ball to someone else or bring in your closer early, which Wilson has done many times.

I actually think Bochy does a good job of managing the pen. It was really just a thought.
