Down on the Farm: 06-17-2010

AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Portland Beavers 4-3:

John Bowker- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .400.
Eugenio Velez- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .345.
Kevin Pucetas- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.40.
Alex Hinshaw- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.55.

Hinshaw's line for his last 10 games is 1-1, 1.38, 13 IP, 9 BB, 15 K's. Still walking too many but otherwise pitching great. This was Pucetas' first appearance since June 1 when he got pounded for 8 runs in 1.2 IP. Our old friend Scott Munter got the start for Portland and threw 2 shutout innings as the start of a reliever relay for the Beavers. He's pitching quite well for Portland: 2-1, 2.33, 38.2 IP, 11 BB, 34 K's, GO/AO= 2.76. Don't be shocked to see him in the Padres' bullpen at some point.

AA Binghampton Mets made a single run in the first inning stand up for a 1-0 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels:

Nothing to see here as Feliz Romero, a 30 yo minor league journeyman got the start for the Squirrels.

High A San Jose Giants downed the Lake Elsinore Storm 9-3:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 5, 2 3B(8). BA= .278.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 5, 3B, SB(15). BA= .393.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .224.
Drew Biery- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .270.
James Simmons- 3 for 5, 2B, SB(12). BA= .237.
Craig Westcott- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 1.55.
Ben Wilshire- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.94.

Lake Elsinore has some recognizable names in their lineup: Jaff Decker is hitting just .198. Allen Dykstra is hitting .210. Blake Tekotte is hitting .307 with 20 SB's.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats downed the Augusta Greenjackets 4-1:

Chris Heston- 6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.10.
Craig Whitaker- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.86.

Not sure when Whitaker last pitched for Richmond. I assume he's on a rehab assignment.

DSL Marlins edged the Giants 2-1:

Christian Paulino- 1 for 3, 2B, HBP, SB(7). BA= .254.
Jose Reyes- 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Reyes makes his first appearance. 19 yo RHP, 6'1", 184 lbs.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes played an exhibition last night:

Jose Medina- 2 HR's, 4 RBI's.
Matt Graham- 5 IP, 0 H, 8 K's.

Here's a S-K roster. I will put a D next to the 2010 draftees:

Edward Concepcion, RHP
D Kevin Couture, RHP
Kaohi Downing, RHP
Jake Dunning, RHP
Edwin Escobar, LHP
Brennan Flick,
Matt Graham, RHP
Shane Kaufman, RHP
Aaron King, LHP
Cameron Lamb, RHP
Mario Rodriguez
Taylor Rogers, RHP
D Seth Rosin, RHP
Shawn Sanford, RHP
Jeff Arnold, C
Alex Burg, C
Jesse Shriner, C
D Chris Lofton, OF
Jose Medina, OF
Rafael Rodriguez, OF
Ryan Scoma, OF
D Raynor Campbell, IF
Julio Izturis, IF
D Carter Jurica, IF
Kyle Mach, IF
Carlos Quintana, IF

Several very interesting names to watch here ranging from international bonus baby RaffyRod to a couple of high ceiling international pitchers, Edward Concepcion and Edwin Escobar(acquired from Texas) to 2010 draftees Seth Rosin and Jurica. 2009 draftee Matt Graham, who I have high hopes for will make his pro debut too.

  1. Ooo, so we signed Jurica and Rosin. How come the Giants haven't announced any of them yet? Or did I miss it?

And there is RafRod, is this his first taste of the regular minor league teams? I'm curious how Izturis does.

What is happening to Richmond? Do you think it is the park, or is something else going on?

  2. I am excited to see Jurica. If he does well, it could mean trouble for Adrianza.

  3. The Giants tend to be tardy with their signing announcements and don't make a fanfare about it. I hadn't seen any announcements either. I got the S-K roster from the Salem Statesman-Journal website. It wasn't on the S-K official website as of this morning.

RafRod played for Arizona Rookie League last year. I think S-K will be a tough test playing against guys who are 3-4 years older and with probably 5-6 years more baseball experience.

The Giants' organizational problems with AA are somewhat of a mystery. The Eastern League is a tough, tough league for hitters at best, but Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT seemed to be the hardest place to hit of all. I was hoping that things would be a bit more neutral in RIchmond, but it's only been a slight improvement at best. We may have to just admit that the Giants' hitting prospects aren't all that good!

Sandoval seemed to hit fine in a brief AA stop and Posey skipped the level entirely. Not sure what that tells us.

Jurica is indeed one of the most intriguing of the newer prospects in the organization.

  4. The draft results list in the Giants website is showing the signings. Not very many signed so far.
