Down on the Farm: 06-03-2010

AAA Las Vegas 51's defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 8-4:

Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5. BA= .308.
Mark DeRosa- 3 for 4, 2B. BA=.750.
Eric Hacker- 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 4.42.

The Eric Hacker train has kind of fallen off the tracks. Nice numbers for DeRosa's rehab start. Where does he play if/when he comes back?

AA Harrisburg Senators edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3:

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .249.
David Mixon- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.32.
Andy Sisco- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.11.

Seems like a lot of hitting prospects have settled in at about a .250 BA in Richmond. Of course, that's better than some of the .220 BA's or worse we used to see him Norwich. Hopefully the bats will start to warm up as the weather does.

High A Bakersfield Blaze burned the San Jose Giants 7-6:

Juan Perez- 2 for 5. BA= .342.
Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .264.
Jose Flores- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .383.
Brandon Belt- 3 for 3, 2 2B, 2 BB. BA= .376.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 5, SB(4). BA= .270.

Adrianza is hitting .375 in his last 10 games.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets downed the Rome Braves 4-3:

Nick Liles- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .296.
Chris Dominguez- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .273.
Dan Cook- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .258.
Brian Irving- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.74.
Ryan Verdugo- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 2.49.

Irving made 1 start in 2008 for Salem-Keizer. Tonight marked the second pro start of his career.

  1. Dr. B - what's your opinion on Juan Carlos Perez? Do you think he's for real, or is this a blip on the Cal League radar? Where would you have him (ballpark) on the Giants top prospect list? I had him just off my top-50 at the beginning of the year, but he's making a serious comeback - which makes sense as this is his second year after knee surgery.

Also, the league average in the Eastern League seems to be around .250/.330/.380/.710. Given that as a bench marker, some of our AA hitters might not look so terrible.

Richmond as a team is hitting .241/.314/.341/.654, which is near the bottom of the league. But some stats:

    Gillaspie - 251/296/396/691
    Noonan - 250/313/354/667
    Neal - 250/297/336/632
    Crawford - 249/344/387/731
    Kieschnick - 239/297/335/632
    Ford - 230/300/321/620

Well, I guess I was wrong - they still look really, really bad. Crawford is doing much better than I expected, though. The weird thing is that it seems like in many cases, a player's dominant skill has disappeared - Neal and Kieschnick have lost their power, Gillaspie has lost his batting eye, etc.

  2. I am hopeful on Perez. Remember, last year they were experimenting with him at 2B, so that may have screwed with his hitting.

Dude was a MONSTER in CC, so he had some skills coming to the Giants.

  3. Dave,

It's almost uncanny how all of the prospects who moved up from SJ last year pretty much all have the same line. I would have expected more of a range with maybe 1 or 2 doing poorly, like .220 or below and 1 or 2 doing really well, like above .280 with some power or SB's. It's like they stuck them all in a blender and came out with the same hitter!

I guess on the positive side, these numbers aren't as bad as what Nate, Travis and several others started out with in AA, so maybe there is some hope as the weather heats up?

  4. I don't really know about Perez. I'm going to try to get to some games when the SJ Giants come south. Maybe I'll have a clearer impression after seeing some of them play in person.
