Down on the Farm: 06-22-2010

AAA Portland Beavers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 5-2:

Matt Downs- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .280.
Kevin Pucetas- 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.71.

Not much to see here.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Akron Aeros 6-2:

Brandon Crawford- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .251.
Roger Kieschnick- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .249.
Mike MacDonald- 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.57.

It's not that the Richmond hitters are doing terrible, it's just that none of them have really broken out.

HIgh A Cal League All-Stars 4 Carolina League All-Stars 3:

Juan Perez- 2 for 4, 2B, HR.
Brandon Belt- 0 for 4.
Craig Westcott- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.
Eric Surkamp- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.
Justin Fitzgerald- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.

Good to see the Giants contingent do themselves and us proud.

Low A North SAL All-Stars 5 South SAL All-Stars 5:

Chris Dominguez- 0 for 3.
Tommy Joseph- 0 for 1
Jose Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.

Not as impressive as the Giants Cal League representatives.

Short Season: Boise Hawks downed the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-2:

Carter Jurica- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .250.
Matt Graham- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 9.82.
Kevin Couture- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Seth Rosin- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

This is a decidedly younger S-K team than we've seen in the past and it may show on the field. One example is Graham and Couture. Graham has a much higher ceiling, but Couture is a polished college pitcher from the Pac 10.

Rookie: Athletics edged the Giants 5-4:

Ryan Rohlinger- 3 for 3, 3 HR's.
Ryan Honeycutt- 2 for 4, 2B, 2 OF assists.
Sundrendy Windster- 2 for 4.
Lorenzo Mendoza- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.
Jacob Dunnington- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.

Rohlinger's line tells you something about the level of competition here, LOL! Windster is repeating the AZL. He's a big time power potential, but needs to make more consistent contact. Mendoza is an 18 yo DSL graduate. I'll have to look up Dunnington's pedigree. OMG! I just noticed that Brett Tomko was the A's pitcher who gave up all 4 Giants runs including Rohlinger's 3 HR's. Wow!! Level of competition! LOL!

DSL Giants edged the Orioles 3-2 in 7 innings of a shortened game:

Really nothing to see here.

  1. Dunnington is a high schooler who went undrafted last year, but the Giants apparently liked what they saw from him while playing for a select team and signed him as a free agent, which is rare for someone out of HS. His fastball reportedly is in the low-mid 90s.

  2. Surkamp and Westcott were very impressive - VERY impressive. Perez seems to be quite a hitter. I watch the SK game and was alittle disappointed in Graham. I didn't realize how lean Raffy is especially in the upper body...

  3. I caught Perez Saturday night in Lake Elsinore. He's very small, but he hit the ball hard and seems to be a fast runner. My wife, who went to the game with me, was amused at how small he looked.
