Down on the Farm: 06-20-2010

AAA Reno Aces trumped the Fresno Grizzlies 6-4:

John Bowker- 1 for 5, HR(6). BA= .373.
Brett Pill- 3 for 5, HR(10). BA= .304.
MadBum- 7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 11 K's.

Pill is hitting .380 with 3 HR's over his last 10 games. Bum got off to a shaky start allowing 2 runs in the first inning, but was dominant for the next 6.2 innings. Those K's look like the Bum from Augusta! I'm guessing he's not too far away from a call up.

Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-2:

Darren Ford- 3 for 5, SB(23). BA= .248.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4. BA= .243.
Michael Ambort- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .234.
Clayton Tanner- 6.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.44.

Second 3-hit game in a row for Ford. Ambort is hitting .333 over his last 10 games. Thomas Neal, who has been missing from the lineup for a few games appeared as a PH. Tim Alderson was the winning pitcher for Altoona with a line of 7 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. Alderson has a record of 6-3 with a 4.50 ERA for Altoona so far this year.

High A The Cal League is off for their All-Star break until Thursday 6/24. The Giants won the first half Northern Division which guarantees them a playoff spot. We'll see if Brandon Belt get promoted to AA after the break. Lake Elsinore won the South Division first half.

Low A Savannnah Sand Gnats swarmed the Augusta Greenjackets 9-5:

Evan Crawford- 1 for 5, HR(3). BA= .252.
Nick Liles- 2 for 4. BA= .307.
Dan Cook- 2 for 4. BA= .282.
Hector Sanchez- 2 for 4. BA= .262.

Augusta used 7 pitchers, I guess because they now have the next 3 days off for their All-Star break. Evan Crawford has been quite streaky so far.

Short Season: Everett Aquasox edged the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-6 in 10 innings:

Julio Izturis- 2 for 6. BA= .333.
Ryan Scoma- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .300.
Jose Medina- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .308.
Raynor Campbell- 4 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .667.
Edwin Escobar- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.60.

Campbell was a 14'th round draft pick out of Baylor.

DSL Giants were idle.

  1. Wow, better not rest Bumgarner much then, his previous start was bad in terms of striking out guys and he blamed the extra rest.

Yeah, he probably will be promoted sooner than later if he keeps on pitching like this. I've been hoping the Giants go to a 6 man rotation after the All-Star break in order to keep the rotation on regular 5 day rest since there are no days off in the last half of July and only 3 in August (one near the end too).

You go 6 man - Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Sanchez, Martinez, Bumgarner (do R/L/R thing) - and they can skip Martinez or Bumgarner when here is a day off in August, depending on who is doing worse. That limits starts by Martinez, puts less strain on our top pitchers' arms during a key portion of the season by having them pitch less games, while turning over those starts to Bumgarner, where hopefully there is not much of a drop in performance level.

I would also be in favor if signing a free agent arm like Pedro Martinez to take Joe Martinez' spot in the rotation, as well. That could put us over the hump too.

  2. I'd love to see the Giants sign Pedro Martinez, but I think he's partial to pitching on the east coast these days.

If it really looks like they have a chance to make a run, I'd like to see them trade 2-3 prospects for Cliff Lee. Remember the charge he put into the Phillies last year?

  3. Do the Giants really have the prospects it would take to land Lee? We would have to do MadBum and Wheeler, likely, with maybe a Neal thrown in for good measure...

  4. No way MadBum traded for a rental.

It would probably take a package of Wheeler (and I'm not sure if they can trade him yet), Sosa, Martinez, Neal, and probably Joseph, at least, plus a couple of lesser prospects (Burriss? Gillaspie? Culberson? Surkamp? Pill? Tanner?)

The Mariners gave up a big package of prospects to the Phillies, so I would expect them to want a big package in return.

  5. The 3 prospects the Phils got for Lee weren't really all that. The GIants farm system is better stocked. We could easily come up with a package equal to what Seattle gave up for him. I'm thinking Something like Adrianza or Peguero, Neal or Kieschnick and Sosa or Bucardo. If it really looked like the Giants had the chance to make a run for it, I would do it in a heartbeat!

  6. If it took 3 prospects like that to get Lee, I would not be too upset, even though I REALLY do not think that 5th starter is that much of a need for us (I realize Lee would not be our 5th starter). I think a 1B or OF would be a better pickup.

  7. Depends on what 1B or OF are out there. It would have to be a definite difference maker to make me want to give up prospects. I see Lee as a definite difference maker. Imagine having him in the rotation instead of Wellemeyer or Martinez! Over the course of the last two months of the season, that's a likely 3-4 extra wins minimum. Where else are you going to find a 3-4 win difference maker?
