College Corner: Ricky Oropesa

I'm happy to report that my man, Ricky Oropesa, was named to BA's second team All-America team for 2010. He was one of just 16 underclassmen out of a total of 48 players named to the 3 A.A. teams. A big shout out to Ricky for this accomplishment!

Ricky is spending the summer playing in the Cape Cod League. This is an amateur league heavily scouted by professional teams because they use wood bats which may give scouts a better feel for how they will perform in the pros. Ricky is off to an excellent start hitting .304 with 2 HR's including an extra inning 3 run walk-off blow for his team, the Chatham Anglers.

Ricky's mom tells me that he is not at all afraid of wood bats, in fact, has always liked hitting with wood. Go Ricky!!

  1. Hopefully the Giants will see this and draft him some day.

  2. I'd love for the Giants to draft Ricky Oropesa in round 1 next year. I'm guessing he's more of a Billy Beane type player than the type the Giants would draft highly though. The Red Sox drafted him out of high school. His combination of plate discipline and power make him the ideal "Moneyball" type of player.

  3. LOL... His combination of plate discipline and power is attractive to moneyball... Is there a philosophy out there where that combo is not attractive? :)

  4. Ricky has only played 1B so far. There is a philosphy out there that you just don't draft a guy who's only position is 1B in round 1 no matter how well he hits. I don't know for sure, but I believe that the Giants subscribe to that philosophy. Posey over Smoak, Gary Davis over Castellanos and several others would be my exhibits. If the Giants take a position player in the first round, you can pretty much count on them taking a guy who can play up the middle on defense.

Ricky has some speed and a great arm. He has pitched relief in HS and last year as a freshman and can hit 92 on the gun, so he might well be able to play 3B or LF, but so far he's only played 1B.
