The Giants hitters came to life late in this game to overcome 4 unearned Pittsburgh runs scored in the second inning after a fielding error by Buster Posey. Key lines:
Freddy Sanchez- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .358. Freddy has won a batting title in the past.
Juan Uribe- 2 for 4, HR(8). BA= .279. Uribe has been a real nice pickup both last year and this year. Seems like a great guy in the clubhouse too!
Buster Posey- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .478. Buster partially made up for his error by scoring 2 runs.
Aubrey Huff- 2 for 4, HR(7). BA= .302. Huff's HR was absolutely crushed and he knew it right away. The beginning of his HR trot is just priceless. Be sure and check out the video on sfgiants.com. Krukow: "He got both cheeks into it." LOL!
Eli Whiteside- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .293. He may not keep it up all year, but right now, the Giants are a better hitting team with Whiteside in the lineup than with Bengie.
Jonathan Sanchez- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.63. Sanchez may have lost his concentration a bit after Posey's error, but to his credit, he recovered and held the Bucs scoreless for the next 4+ innings thus keeping his team in the game.
Brian Wilson- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(14). ERA= 1.93. It sure seems like Wilson is maturing as a closer. He has to be one of the best in the game now.
The win increased the Giants record to 29-24 and moved them within 2.5 games of the NL West leading Padres who lost to the Phils 3-2 to bring their record to 32-22. The Dodgers lost to Atlanta 4-3 staying 0.5 games back of the Pads at 32-23. Last place Arizona nipped the Rockies 7-6 to drop them 1.5 games behind the Giants and 4 games behind the Pads. Arizona improves to 21-34.
Todd Wellemeyer gets a chance to prove he can pitch on the road tomorrow in the next game with Tim Lincecum trying to right his ship on Sunday.
