Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B. BA= .246.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.35.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, Save(6). ERA= 1.42.
High A Bakersfield Blaze topped the San Jose Giants 7-5:
Andrew Susac(C)- 1 for 4, HR(2). BA= .245.
Hector Correa(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 7.02.
Stephen Harrold(RHP)- 3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.13.
Susac's dinger was with the bases juiced. The Correa starting experiment does not seem to be going well. He missed time with an injury. I wonder if he's healthy?
Low A Lexington Legends beat the Augusta Greenjackets 6-1:

Hembree or Bochy? Will either be contributing if we're in it in September?
ReplyDeleteJust looking at the numbers, it's hard to see any of the kids making anything more than a very modest contribution this year.
Anyone have any predictions on who might play a part this year?
Outside of the kids, I would like to Christian up here as the 5th OF.
Based on velocity, big time favorite is Hembree.
DeleteI'd say somebody is going to play a part in a trade in mid July. Nobody's ready for MLB action besides Hembree if they think his slider is good enough. Well, and the MIs such as Bond and Noonan. Never shy with throwing a MI into the fire, Los Gigantes.
I think Nick Noonan is a sleeper for a callup this year. The other guy I wouldn't sleep on is Todd Linden. If Belt, Pill and Huff continue to stink it up, I could see LInden getting a 1-2 week window of opportunity in July before the trading deadline.
DeleteMayo is picking up on the Hensley to the Doyers DrB. Not good for our hopes and dreams coming straight out of Oklahoma. We'll see what happens. Should start to get crazy over the weekend before the draft on monday. Of course, no indication of HS bats from anybody. Just hope they dodge the college position player minefield laid out. I don't like the rumors much, but I also don't give em much credence. For the record: Hensley for pitcher, Addison Russell for hitter, those are my picks.
ReplyDeleteSince there are about 8 HS pitchers who I think are pretty much in the same tier, I wouldn't be heartbroken if Hensley got taken before #20. The Giants can't control what happens in front of them. Gotta stay focused on what they can control. If Hensley is off the board, that just means someone else who some people rank higher will fall. I am confident that out of Hensley, Sims, Traveiso, Eflin and Weickel, at least 2 of them will be there at #20. Any of them seem worthy to me. Heck, if they love Smoral enough to draft him in spite of the injury, then I'm OK with that too!
DeleteThe only college hitter I really like is Shaffer and I'm guessing he'll be off the board. I'd be OK with Naquin, but would be mildly disappointed. No thank you on Marrero. I don't trust Roache to come back from that injury.

HS hitters? Joey Gallo reminds me a bit of Tommy Joseph. I could live with a reach for Lewis Brinson. Really like his scouting videos I could see David Dahl falling to #20, but he has a very armsy swing. Not in love with it at all. I'm not sure I would want them to pass on Courtney Hawkins if he fell. Maybe I've read too many negative comments on Russell, but he seems like a prime bust candidate.
My ideal draft would have the Giants taking one of the HS arms listed above in round 1 and then a HS bat like Bregman or Ron Miller in round 2.
Gallo has the best power in the draft. But he is the biggest bust potential of everybody.
DeleteSims is just as fine a pick to me, apologies to our Oklahoma friends. We can't control what happens in front for sure. I'd rank em just like you put them down: Hensley, Sims, Travieso, Eflin and Weickel. And if Tidrow gives the OK for McCullers, then giddyup. Smoral as well, although that injury in his foot may be a bigger warning sign then first thought.
I'd be pretty bummed with a tweener defense first OF. Lets face it, the Giants need power bats and have gone on the record saying they need to develop them, not sign through free agency. Ok, then. Time to put your money where your mouth is. Go get a blue chip power bat. Hawkins is a no brainer, but I doubt it happens.
Sure, Russell is a huge boom-bust candidate. Might have to take that risk though. You get a power bat at short, you have a gigantic advantage for years.
I agree, the grab a HS arm and then see what's there at the 84 - either another arm or the white whales would be a nice strategy.

How can anyone seriously entertain the idea of Hembre coming up in a spot of need?? The guy has an ERA over 4; that does not scream "major league ready" to me.
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't bring Hembree up now, but the PCL is funny. It can really inflate an ERA, even more than MLB sometimes. Right now if there was a need, I'd put the call in for Kontos.
